It's an old Bioware tradition: in the opening level of any of their games, at least one of your team members will die in some plot-based event.  In ME1, we had Jenkins.  In ME2, we had Wilson.

So who do we get in ME3?

I say we name him Rottenhemd.  Or Jones.

If not Verner, you get Niftu Cal, if neither, your LI(s).  Just punishment for not keeping one very important junior Spectre and one veritable god alive.  DUH.

I always looked at the game differently. In Mass Effect there was corporal Jenkins, he died on Eden Prime & Shepard felt very sad about it (at least my Shepard was). In Mass Effect 2 just before you go on Archangel's Mission you enlist with the Blue Suns batarians in Afterlife & prevent this kid (who talk a lot like Jenkins) from participating in the fight. I found that saving that kid's life kinda made up for Jenkins' death. Hope Mass Effect won't continue with killin' squadmates at the begining of the game... it's damn silly just like the Carmines that always die in Gears of War at the begining of every game.
