And here starts the discussions: "Numbers? What does it mean? What do they do? Why is Shep having the Geth Plasma Shotgun?" and so on...

Can't say you were wrong there, Chewy.

Sooo losing access to that mass relay probably is the ultimate sacrifice like some guessed?

The Reapers arrive and attack earth. The ultimate sacrifice is Shepard being forced to shut down the Arcturus Relay in order to prevent the Reapers from getting anywhere else, thus leaving the Sol system to the Reapers until Shepard return with the military.

But the Reapers could still fly out of the Sol system at conventional FTL speeds without the use of the relays.  It would take them longer to get somewhere yeah, but it's not destroying the relay would leave them trapped in orbit of Earth.

Aren't we pretty much assuming at this point that the reapers have entered the galaxy from dark space under their own steam (not using relays, using their own FTL drives), why wouldn't they just set a course for another system at that speed?

Edit - Not to mention t he fact that the Reapers designed and built the relay network.  If some human can figure out a way to "turn it off", i'm pretty sure the Reapers can "turn it back on" again.

It's possible that he's not "turning it off", but actually disabling it.  I think it's probably that the ultimate sacrifice is disabling the Charon relay thus effectively trapping the Reapers in Sol system, with Shepard OUTSIDE Sol system.  I also don't buy into the assumption that the Reapers return from dark space without the assistance of a mass relay, I think that one of their many plans has probably worked and they've managed to activate a relay connecting their location in dark space to the galaxy.

So yes, while they could travel elsewhere at traditional FTL speeds, it would take them years to get to the next relay.

unless the reapers use one of their own to make a new relay to get out of the sol system

Anyone remember that Cerberus Daily News story a while back that was edited? It said something about Mass Relays having "Dark Switches" that could change their function if anyone figured out how to change them.

Think this DLC may mention those?

I think that was just referring to the Reapers' ability to lock other species out of the mass relays while still being able to use them themselves.  The Prothean VI on Ilos said that the Reapers did that while they were destroying the Protheans.  So the "dark switch" just makes it so the mass relay will only let Reapers through.

The good doctor might know something about how to operate those switches. Unfortunately her research leads her into Batarian Space, at which point she is captured. Shepard needs her knowledge and infiltrates the base to rescue her. After the Reapers arrive in Sol, they disable the Charon Relay, slowing their advance considerably.

They were mentioned here:

03/18/2010 - TR-15 Letus Becomes Closest Probe to a Neutron Star

“Astronomers are excited tonight as the probe TR-15 Letus comes the closest any probe has ever come to a neutron star. The star in question is in a globular cluster approximately 18,000 light-years from Earth. Though it contains slightly more than two times the mass of Earth's sun, its radius is a tiny 15.8 kilometers, spinning at approximately 24% of the speed of light. The probe was sent to the star via the Kappa Iota Relay, a charted but rarely-used relay predating the Rachni War. The relay was abandoned due to the highly lethal radiation found on the other side, but the small doses that pass through the relay are manageable for a shielded probe. Control of the radiation emission and reception of Letus's signal is made possible by the infamous Dark Switches, a set of previously unknown control functions the Protheans installed on mass effect relays.”

For all we know, "Soon" in the BioWare dictionary means next month. But I hope I'm wrong.

Hello everyone! First time post here.

One idea I had about the dark switches on the mass relays is maybe it uses a reaper iff like system to pass through.

One other thing I looked at was the number 304,942 which if measured in days would fall on october 12th. So maybe that could be a rough time estimate when me3 could arrive. That's probably looking to far into it but it's just a idea.

I wish they would announce the release date. My xbox isn't reading discs anymore so I need to know how much time I have to figure something out so I can play this!

About the number on the screenshot: I think it could be a countdown for something (perhaps for the Arrival of the Reapers?).

If the number 304942 means...
days, then it is 835 years.
hours, then it is 35 years.
minutes, then it is 211 days.

I think the last one is correct - we have 211 days - more than a half year - until the Reapers arrive. So the gap between ME 2 and ME 3 is 211 days.

Sorry about that, I did mean minutes. I don't know where days came from. Probably to much excitement from the recent news.

Why don't include seconds?

I bet the number in the picture is meaningless, or is merely a distance measurement or something, I really doubt it's a countdown.

Because if you include seconds it means Arrival is coming out in 3.5 days.  ;)

If it means seconds, then it is roughly 3,5 days.
