Hey,

so I decided to go with a plain cleric but then I realized that when I start as ranger and dual to cleric I can have both cleric and druid spells. I'm considering to dual to cleric ASAP (level 2? - never dualled so early). My idea is to take him to BG2 and TOB and there exploit Sanctuary with Turn Undead / Blade Barrier so I want a good caster instead of good fighter. Don't know how good idea it is though. In my test run it was fun to solo Gromnir's Il Khan soldiers with this tactic but I won't go solo.

What do you think of this idea and is there any good reason to wait for certain level of ranger and dual to cleric later?

Thanks

There's no "good" caster...just pile up a bunch of wisdom for bonus spells, and that's it. There's no spell DC, no feats, none of that 3rd edition stuff to differentiate casters.

As such, there's also no reason to limit yourself to just casting. High wisdom gives bonus spells, but that leaves plenty of room for str/dex/con to pick up a pointed (or not so pointed, for a cleric) stick and whump monsters with it.

If all you are interested in are the druid spells, then by all means, dual over at level 2. But the more levels of ranger you take, the more HP you'll end up with, and if you go to 7 ranger you also get a half-an-attack per round, which makes a sizable difference. More levels of ranger also means more proficiency stars.

Like Matuse says: if it's just about the druid spells, there's no reason not to dual at lvl 2. But you'll end up with a significantly weaker character than dualing at a later point. Personally, i'd go for lvl 9, which gets you another proficiency point and more hitpoints. Having said that, a ranger dualed to cleric at lvl 2 is - like nearly any build in vanilla BG - perfectly viable.

Thanks for info. I will dual him at level 2 because the original idea was to go as pure cleric. So I'll be almost pure with better spells :)

For BG2 you can afford to dual late, but I'd suggest L3. The reason being is that it's still early, and dualing to a Cleric means it won't take too long to get your ranger skills back, but it gives you an extra proficiency point. Since rangers have four at the start, can't go above two in any one weapon, and clerics can't use non-blunt weapons, it might not actually be that useful, but it's nice to have and gives you a little more HP (and a use of Charm Animal, whoo!).
