Just because you shoot people it is still an RPG. Action RPG maybe.

Exactly. RPG = Role Playing Game. You play the role of Commander Shepard in the ME series, you play the role of Adam Jensen in DX:HR. Just becuase it doesn't have the "tradional" elements that you have come to expect from an RPG, doesn't make it any less of an RPG.

Does anyone really expect the game of the year to go to the "best" game? It's not quite the oscars or anything, but the whole things so subjective they might as well pick from a hat for all the difference it makes.

Double fix'd.

Even though some could argue that Diablo is less of an RPG and more of a hack and slash.

Actually... 8 years and 10 months, looks like someone forgot this decade started in 2010:pinched:

I know I'm going to open up a large can of worms here, but the decade started this year. Although generally speaking a decade refers to any span of ten years, when talking calendar decades they end on the 'zero' year, not start.

From my knowledge the 90s started in 1990 and ended in 99, it's the same with centuries and millenia, the new millenium started back in 2000 not in 2001.  It wouldn't make much sense for the year 1960 to be part of the 50s but that's just me  btw wikipedia agrees with me (for what it's worth) as does Merrian-webster, just some websites I got from googling it

I'm sorry, but no. After the constant mediocre and average games (*coughAlphaProtocol/Falloutcough*) I have concluded that the only reason people even remember Obsidian's name is because of KOTOR 2. Now if you were to have said Bethesda then that would be a different story...

So is Halo an RPG then since you play the role of Spartan 117?

That is so vague, In StarCraft 2 I play the role of Jim Raynor, is that a RPG? No it's not, you dunce.

If Diablo 3 and Dark Souls count, then you should add Dungeon Siege 3 to that list.

There was no year zero. It started at one. I was a lot of fun at millenium parties.

well technically there was a year "0" if you look at it from what the western world uses, the year 0 was the year Christ was (supposed to be) born and by convention a decade, century and millenium start in the 0 years (i.e. 1960s, 21st century starting in 2000 etc.)

It could be, if the game was designed to be an RPG instead of an RTS. But SC2 has many RPG elements in it.

How's that ad hominem working out for ya? =]

With apologies to the OP for going a bit off topic here:

there was no year zero, so the calendar started at year one. Therefore, the first decade was year 1 to 10, the second was year 11 to 20, and so on. So yes, the millennium actually started in 2001.

And if you check the wiki, I believe you'll see it agrees with this, actually.

As for the 90s, 60s, etc. that's the kind of thing I was referring to when I noted the general sense of the use of 'decade'.

WE'll wait and see what happens when the Witcher 2 starts out

I like to go by 1's instead of 0's

They were clearly paid off.

If Skyrim gets above a 90% they were paid off too.

If TW2 gets below a 99% they were paid by Bioware to not give it a good score.

Threads in which people attempt to define the term "rpg" always go so well. We should totally start doing that. Or we could find another way to get it locked, like hate speech.

The difference tends to come down to whether it's the character's or the player's skills that decide about the outcome of action -- in this sense a game which relies primarily on player's reflexes can be indeed seen as "less of an rpg" because it can easily lead to situation where the player finds themselve physically not capable of "role playing" the character as they envision him/her. Or the reverse -- the character excels at tasks which they should fail badly simply because the player substituting for the character is very skilled at these tasks.

Isn't that enough? This never ends well. Some consider COMPUTER rpgs to be full of character skill options, level ups and lots of equipment to play with. Others think RPG just means any game where you are put in the shoes of another character. At this point I think it means a rocket propelled grenade that should be aimed at any of these definition of roleplaying game arguments.

Okay, I feel like Sheldon Cooper now. Sarcasm?
It's so hard to tell these days, with all the DA2 vs. TW2 flame wars.

Obsidian is doing Dungeon Siege 3, which won't be finished until 2012. So, no.
