I remember back when Nintendo Power gave Pokemon a 7 and Puzzle Quest a 4

popularity caused that to backfire

and hey did those high review scores really help Psychonauts at all?

Also, I have trouble picking the best of anything. I find it hard to argue that magazines/websites are wrong when it comes to their best of the year awards.

I can never tell anyone what my "favourite" anything is. I don't see it as a static concept, and I'd have to have a serious think to work it out at any given point.

I'd find it very easy to argue when they're wrong, but very hard to support, as the main thrust and parry of my position would be founded upon me saying so.

Let's hope this isn't a case of review-advertisement.

While I'm excited for the game (controlled, since I'll be picking it up after I hear how well the thing runs. if it's like DA:O I may wait till they get patches out), I'm gonna wait to see as many constructive critical analysis as possible.

From other 80-90 reviews, we seem to hear of some issues, so I'm not going to buy the "RPG of the decade thing just yet. . .

It's a mainstream game media review.  It effectively has.

The Academy Awards don't exist to criticise bad movies.  They don't even exist to \\\\reward good movies.  They exist to promote movies generally.  PC Gamer does effectively the same thing for PC gaming.  It is not in their interests to criticise a game that they expect to be successful.

LOL, it's like a bad movie.

They were clearly paid off.
If Skyrim gets above a 90% they were paid off too.
If TW2 gets below a 99% they were paid by Bioware to not give it a good score.

Okay, I feel like Sheldon Cooper now. Sarcasm?
It's so hard to tell these days, with all the DA2 vs. TW2 flame wars.

No, I'm completely serious, Two Worlds 2 was paid off by Bioware to get a bad score.

I saw it, and I'm not giving you the source.

The jokes are getting really subtle around here lately.

I took that as more of a joke than anything.  All I think he was trying to say was that he liked it better than ME2 and Fallout: NV.

I'm not sure the AAs are a really great example. The Academy Awards don't have to promote particular bad films that were expected to be good; by the time the awards come out it's too late to make much difference.

I think it's more enlightening to think of PC Gamer as something like a celebrity-focused magazine. Their stock-in-trade is access to celebrities, since that's how they get their interviews, pictures, etc. When that's your business, you need to stay on the good side of the celebrities -- or rather, their publicists -- if you want the access.

Which is why I only trust well constructed player reviews.. Most press is at it's very core untrustworthy..
