It comes as a surprise when every other game you play works just fine.
Play those same games on an HD TV and you wouldn't be saying this. You cannot compare SD TV game and image quality vs an HD TV game and image quality.
It is a complete waste of money to get a current generation console and use it on an SD TV.

I would think there's a signifcant amount of people who got a 360 before HDTVs were as common as they are today - it came out in 2005 after all.

For the people having this problem with an xbox and SDTV you could try going into system settings and switching the xbox to widescreen. It doesn't help much, but it prevents the game from compressing the letters during cutscenes. They're still tiny, but slightly more readable.
Will try, thank you!

Except you're missing the point. The point is that we shouldn't HAVE to scrimp and save for months, foregoing up to FIVE to EIGHT brand new games in favor of an HDTV when we have perfectly working SDTVs that work great with 99% of the Xbox 360 or PS3 library, and is only necessary in this case because of BioWare's baffling decision to continually make the text smaller and worse despite complaints.
And that's only if you do have a steady source of disposable income. If you don't, like me and many other gamers, this forces you to choose between your typical new game maybe five times a year and no games for a year just to save for a crappy quality TV. It's completely insane to HAVE to buy a new TV when I've got one that works great for 99% of the things I need it for just because BioWare won't make the text a few pixels bigger (Text, mind you, that some HDTV users even are complaining is rather hard to read).
Well, I disagree with your analysis completely. That's like saying I don't want to HAVE to buy a color TV to take advantage of movies shot in Technicolor when my old black and white set works just fine. The 360 and PS3 are HD generation consoles designed for HDTVs. HDTVs have been out for a generation, now.
You are on the back end of the technological bell curve, my friend. A few years ago I had a VCR that worked great, too, but that didn't stop VHS tapes from becoming extinct. Look, I feel bad that you can't read the text and maybe Bioware should include a font scaler (I want one for the PC). But to assume developers need to continue to cater to standard definition sets is not realistic at this point.
And again, you miss the point. It's not even remotely the same. Color TVs became standard during the 70's, yet during the 80's, 90's, and even up until the change to all digital signals, you could still use a color TV if you had a working one. Hell, you might still be able to if you hook it up to a converter box. The only difference was a better viewing experience. Black and white TV was still perfectly watchable.
Now, HD penetration rate in the uhich is still only somewhere around 65%,which means, that only 65% of the houses in the US own at least ONE HDTV. That means 35% don't have any at all, and that plenty of those 65% only have the one, which may or may not be in the same room as those people would have their gaming systems. My house actually has TWO. So my house is above this magical curve you speak of. I just personally do not have one in my room. The only reason those other two were bought, however, is when the time came to replace the TVs in those rooms, a cheap HD TV made more sense than trying to hunt down an SDTV and pay a similar price. We're still not even close to the point where in the late 80's and early 90's, you were in an extremely tiny group of people to have black and white TVs.
More importantly, as mentioned before, they still WORKED. As SDTVs do currently. The only difference was you got a better viewing experience in color, as you generally do with HDTV. The only difference normally with HDTV is a somewhat better picture. The problem comes in with games like this and the aforementioned three other major Xbox 360 ones that just flatout ignore SD users and become completely unusable for SD users, and all because BioWare insists on going with a tiny font rather than a slightly larger one (THAT THEY USED FOR ORIGINS, THUS MAKING IT EVEN STUPIDER THAT ME2 AND THE DEMO ARE UNREADABLE!) or a scalable font as an option, if one were to make the argument that making bigger text would ruin their HD experience. There's absolutely no reason it has to be either / or!
Also importantly, this was an issue with ME2. An issue that was apparently big enough that BioWare "looked into" fixing it, but found it wouldn't be possible to patch. Thus, if they actually care about the (apparently large amount of, if the complaints made them look into it in the first place) people that have SDTVs and couldn't read the text, WHY ON EARTH WOULD THEY IGNORE THAT AND GO WITH TINY TEXT IN THE VERY NEXT GAME?
So yeah, continue being an HD apologist all you want and making excuses and acting like we're fossils for not owning an HDTV that our console is hooked up to (despite the fact HDTV use isn't anywhere near as high as you "Just suck it up and buy an HDTV with your magical unicorn money that just appears when you wish hard enough!" people seem to think). But the simple fact of the matter is that many people still don't own them, and if BioWare loses even ONE SD sale over this just because they ignored complaints from Dead Rising, Banjo Kazooie (sorry, I said Ratchet & Clank earlier. My mistake), and Mass Effect 2 players and decided to needless make the text difficult to impossible to read, then that's just plain stupid.

Stop saying "an" HD, it's "A" HD. An only comes before vowels, this is basic stuff.
It's perfectly valid. An goes before vowel sounds. H and S when pronounced as the letter, as with words with silent H's, begin with vowel sounds (Aytch. Ess.). Just because it starts with an H, you don't automatically use A as it would be awkward, since you're basically going with "A aytch" or (like in the case of honor, generally said as "an honor") "a on-er". An = before vowel sounds, not just vowels themselves. A = before consonant SOUNDS, not just consonants themselves. This is why we say "A user" instead of "an user", due to the y sound at the beginning, or "a one-time offer" instead of "an one-time offer" due to the w sound at the beginning.

YES I CAN, because I don't give a flying f*ck about images quality in games! That's why I loved DA:O and that's why I still ejaculate every time I see Halo 2 graphics!
RPGs were always about the story! Graphics, audio, good controls... as great as they are, they're nothing more than additions. There may be no audio, graphics may be a total crap and controls may make me wanna cut off my fingers, but as long as the story is good, I WILL play it and won't stop untill 100% completion! And if you still want to care about goddamn graphics in RPGs then please, stop flaming about it here.

Oh yeah, this. I forgot to address the stuff about how it's so much more than just the text and there's a world of difference between an HD picture and SD and so many games would benefit from it so it wouldn't just be buying one for this game. The thing is, I don't give a crap about graphics. I'm not a graphics **** like so so many modern gamers seem to be. Give me Final Fantasy 4, 6, 7, or 10 any day of the week over 13 or any photorealistic Crysis on high settings. I honestly could not care less if I can see the individual hairs in Hawke's beard at perfect clarity as long as the damn thing's playable. The problem is that with this text issue, it's NOT! Many other people agree with me, as there must be some reason the "last gen, awful looking Wii" has outsold the 360 by over 30 million units, and the DS has outsold the PSP by over double. If I were to purchase an HDTV before my SDTV needs replacing or before I just happen to end up with a spare $400 , it would be entirely just for this game, and not to make it look all nice and pretty, but rather so I can simply read the story, which in an RPG is... you know, the most important aspect of it.Akuron wrote...

And see? This is something all the "Just suck it up and buy an HDTV!" people are missing. It's not JUST SDTVs that are having problems with this ridiculously small text BioWare went with this time. There are people with HDTVs having issues with the font size, too. It's just ridiculous to cut out so many customers and fans just because you keep insisting on smaller and smaller text for your game.

It's kind of a different situation with HDTV's. Black and white tv's were the same resolution as a coloured tv. They just didn't have colour. HDTV's on the other had have a higher resolution so when a program/game is recorded in HDTV it's going to look distorted on a SDTV.
For example, Watch a sports game in HD, then change the channel to the SD channel. You will notice it being stretched out, the picture is cut out on the sides and you will probably see some of the scoreboard missing.
Dragon age was designed for HDTV's/PC's. Its a high resolution game. Playing it on a SDTV will look distorted(small text, stretched etc). The only solution is to get a HDTV. If you can't afford one well you will have to deal with a distorted image.

VHS's, and Black and White TVs have been out of date (and I mean completely, as in phased out in even the smallest of percentages) for like a decade. If you argue that HD has taken over, you're likely to only be able to justify a year or two. Just because you have one does not, in fact, mean they are the current norm. I have one too. I also have two standard definition television sets in the house. Do you know why I have one? Because on Black Friday there was a sale that docked the price of a $600 set by $300. Thus making it a deal that could not be ignored, considering at the time my birthday ensured I had a fair bit more scratch than usual.
It would be far more accurate to say that HD is in the process of becoming the norm, but has not quite reached it. BluRay hasn't overtaken DVD. 3D hasn't overtaken the movie viewing experience completely. HD hasn't completely overtaken standard definition. And it will continue to not do so for a couple more years, until which point where -nothing- works properly without HD. I.e. that would be when every game on the 360 requires it to read the text properly. Currently we're looking at a cool 1% if we're being generous. A percentage that does not a new television purchase make.

Most of the arguments people are making here are entirely subjective, especially the "I would be buying an HDTV for this one game" which is inaccurate. I rememebr hearing the same complaints when CDs came out and they stopped pressing records for new music. Same with VHS and DVD. At some point, you have to buy into the next technological wave.
Regardless...all this discussion is off topic. I think people should be getting HDTVs and I stand buy it as all media is being recorded in the format, not just games. But, I think we can all agree that Bioware should at least give us an option to scale text fonts in game, without a mod.

I don't know where you live but where I am from, SDTV's are the past, just like VHS.
Almost every show you watch is recorded in HD. You are watching the stretched out, distorted version on a SDTV/HDTV with no HD Receiver/PVR.
$300 for a HDTV is a good deal if its a High Quality brand. I can get a 32 inch Philipsfor 299 at futureshop.

While I totally agree with you, here, I think you are dealing with folks who don't really care about any of that and just want to hold onto what they have. In the end, they will be forced to buy an HDTV as media will stop catering to them soon. It happens with all technology and there are always people on the back end of the curve who still hold on to the end. (My uncle is one of those people still proudly playing his albums on an ancient record player!)
If money was the issue, it isn't an excuse anymore as I just saw a 22" HDTV monitor on Craigs List for $75. If someone really wanted an HD monitor or TV, they could get one.

I would say the easiest solution would have been for bioware to include an option to scale text size, i am willing to bet anything that the work it would meant for bioware is a lot less than the combined effort of having everyone who doesnt own an HD to go out and buy one.
Your suggestion is one solution though, and somewhat easy for those who can afford it for sure. So you do have somewhat of a point.

Argue about the importance of an HDtv all you want. You can't ignore the large number of people unable to play the game because of the text that have been stating just as much, many of which have also stated that they consider cancelling their pre-orders. A game that is less accessible will not sell as one that is playable by all its fans. Sure it'll still sell great numbers because it's Dragon Age and because it's a Bioware game in general. But more is a hell of a lot better and you can not expect anyone to believe that any kind of text fix would be a difficult thing to do.
