For some, apparently. Not for all. It's an issue both SD and HDTVs are having.

Yes, I've seen some HD users posting that they can't read the text, either. What I'm getting down to is that it doesn't make sense, to me, for a game like this to minimize the text to this point. BioWare games, at least the ones that I've played, are too textually complex for that. These aren't brainless hack-and-slash games where the text might as well not be there at all. Look at DA:O. Dialog options aside, if you don't or can't read the text, you're missing out on all of the codex entries, which makes the Dragon Age universe a much more richly detailed universe than you could even suspect without the codex. A lot of hard work went into that stuff, and I appreciate it. Maybe it'll be the same in DA2, but the text choice makes me think that, somewhere along the line, somebody decided it didn't matter. Minimal text size says that the text is of minimal importance.

Blathering blatherscyte. Can we even do that?!

Seriously. All we want is a response from Bioware either saying "Oh, yeah. That text in the demo is a super old build. We remembered about all the fans that complained about small text for ME2 and that we actually don't hate our fans and made sure to fix that" or "Yeah. Screw all a y'all. We want your eyes to die trying to read our microfont. The demo text is exactly what you're getting" simply so we know whether or not to keep our preorders or get our money back for a game that may be unplayable. Instead, we've had BioWare staffers chiming in about whether Lothering looks too much like a barren wasteland (despite being exactly that due to the Blight), whether Isabella the duelist rogue shipcaptain from the demo is Isabella the duelist rogue shipcaptain from DA:O, or whether it's ruins the game to have a city named Kirkwall as one of the main cities because that's a real city in Scotland. If you can't tell, all of those are stupid issues that don't effect whether people will or won't purchase the game that BioWare staffers have addressed while not responding to this. It's a bit absurd and this question really NEEDS to be answered.

Duck Tales was awesome and all, but Gargoyles was the best of the Disney Afternoon, hands down.

Seriously, this has just become crazy. There's a number of people here who are ready to cancel their preorders over this issue, and we're getting ignored. I contacted tech support and was told to consult the strategy guide for the game. Since I'm not going to buy a game if I dont know if it'll be playable on my system, I'm going to cancel my preorder for DA2, today. And since I'm not going to buy anything from a company that ignores me and blows off my concerns (seriously, who thought that telling me to consult the strategy guide for DA2 would help?) it looks like I won't be buying ME3 either, or any potential DA sequels.

Yeah, **** those guys. Just canceled my preorder. I don't even care if it turns out to be readable, I'm just not in a mood to be ignored. There are enough other games out there that i haven't even played yet and which are sure to work with my SDTV + xBox setup. Screw BioWare. Who's with me?

I won't be buying until I know the text is readable.  As much as it pisses me off that they are ignoring this, I really want to play it.  So if it turns out the text is fine after all or if they fix it with a patch or something then I will buy at that time.

Amen to that, brothers and sisters. I'll still hold on to my pre-order until next Friday. If they haven't responded by then, less money for them. It's not THAT hard to look through the forum once a day, see a thread that has 8 pages and figure "hey, there's something going on here" and actually take a look. Maybe even respond since we're asking for that?

I don't know, but unless an answer is given soon, my money's going to Infamous 2 instead. Unless that game also suffers from unreadable text, in which case I'll go cry in a corner for humanity.

Yeah. I don't get that "Consult the strategy guide" answer some of us have gotten. Granted, they're just tech support script jockeys, and "consult the guide" is possibly their go to "I have no freaking clue!" response. But still, has anyone here ever seen a strategy guide have some kind of "Playing this game in SD vs HD comparison" section or a page that says "If you have an SDTV, you're ******!"

Homefront is supposed to be great, plus you don't even have to worry about text in that case, since it's a shooter, so that would be a nice alternative to waste your money on.

I asked this yesterday, and didn't get an answer from anybody. Maybe they thought I was being snarky, but this is an honest question: What does an HDTV user get out of having smaller text in a game? Is there some kind of graphical advantage?

The advantage is more space for the game world (ie less of the screen covered with text/UI) and being able to fit more text on the screen at once.

I hardly see how increasing the font size would obstruct gameplay enough to warrant scaling it down so much. Especially during conversations or when upgrading abilities, in which case there is nothing to obstruct. I would rather they made the text cover the entirety of the screen than it be a little speck on the bottom.
I am dissapoint Bioware.

It's especially baffling when I'm being told to consult something that doesn't exist yet. I'd love to pour over the strategy guide right now, but Prima won't let me. They have this thing about not releasing strategy guides for games that haven't been released yet. Those bastards.

I canceled my preorder, btw. If it turns out to be readable, I'll get it after release. If not, well, I'll get an HDTV someday. The money gods have been ransacking my pockets lately (if not for unexpected, expensive, and totally necessary things I've had to pay out the last two months, I could've had two HDTVs by now!) but that won't always be the case. But by then, will I still care about DA2? If Skyrim is already out... Well, I already have a Dunmer 95% planned out, so that'll be that.

I've had glasses practically welded to my head since I was ten. This is a fairly new (less than one year old) prescription that I'm wearing right now. New glassess wouldn't be helping me much with this.

Besides, the ME2 font was a lot better than this one. It was small, but readable on SDTVs. I don't remember having any problems reading it. What gave my eyes trouble in ME2 was that horrible shade of orange they used on the menus and loading screens. On my TV at least, it was really bright, uncomfortably so.

Yes! Why didn't I think of that? I need to get glasses! Because clearly, double glasses is the only way to see what the hell they were thinking by going with tiny text that's nearly impossible to read on SDTV no matter how close you are!

Again, you aren't on to some magical info that we're all too stupid to figure out. If we had horrible vision to the point of needing glasses that we don't already have, more than just the text is going to be hard to see. Again, just because YOU can see the font perfectly on whatever your setup is (and if it's HD, I want to slap you as you'd be completely missing the point here. If it's SD, then you just happen to have one incredibly fortunate set-up as nearly everyone else with SDTVs have text too small to read), doesn't mean that we're all just conspiratorily lying about this. For me, on the edge of my bed a mere two feet from the screen, with my prescription glasses that allow me to have 20/20 vision, IT. IS. NEARLY. UNREADABLE. Simple as that. And it's the case for many others. It's just too damn small and this was an issue they KNEW about from ME2, so it SHOULD have been fixed. And hell, it might have been. Which is why we just want a freaking answer from BioWare already so we know. Two people have already cancelled preorders from being sick of waiting to see if BioWare stops ignoring us and gives us an answer on this. That's $120 lost revenue just in this thread just because they insist on having tiny HD-only text rather than slightly larger text or a simple toggle between HD and SD text. And that is a stupid decision to make.

And I think you need to start discussing Duck Tales, and other beloved animated properties of the 1980's, and 1990's.

I cancelled my preorder too. I have a 50" sdtv that works fine and considering that 50% of the current households still use stdv sets you would think they would plug in the finished product to one and make sure it is legible.

All text including subtitles was tiny and the red stuff saying you don't meet the requirements looks like a kid with a red sharper went over it.

I enjoyed 95% of the games I have played for the ps3/360 have not had this issue to such a degree. Dragon age origins had some smaller fonts on the codex but I could read it from across the room with out trouble. I don't see why they would go from legible in origins to giving a FU to the other half of us.

So as my counter FU I am not buying this game until they respond and prove that they took care of it. This whole dlc racket is one hard pill to swallow alright but making a story based game illegible is like forgetting to program in pokeballs in a pokemon game. Kinda f's the whole thing over.

A lot of arguing in this thread... I don't know about the SDTV issue but on the PC - at least for Origins - most of the UI was fixed for 1024x768 resolutions and didn't scale up, so text would appear smaller the higher your display's resolution. In relation to the rest of the game, at 1680x1050 you'd want about 37% larger text, 56% larger at 1920x1200, and 100% larger at 2560x1600.

Depending on your visual acuity, pixel density, and and how close you were to the display, this may or may not have been a problem. The rest is just pointless bickering and posturing over an obvious issue. You can probably expect as much a response as last time.

Maybe TS can change the thread title to "Text in the demo too tiny, I'm canceling my preorder". because I already did.

I will only buy it when I'm sure that it is fixed in the final version.

And it would be one thing if we KNEW that. But they haven't answered this issue at all. This thread's been around for three days and is up to 8 pages while they've popped in to answer one page crap topics about whether Lothering is too bland, ruined area (which, you know, something like the Blight would do) and we've still got no answer. We've emailed BioWare support and gotten no clear answer. The game comes out in approximate two weeks and the best we have is a "They MIGHT have fixed it for the final version." Considering this is something they were aware of from ME2, it should have been one of the first design choices made, so if they didn't notice for the demo, then chances are they didn't notice for the final either. So why boycott for such a dumb reason? Because we don't want to gamble $60 HOPING that they fixed it when the only information we have to go on indicates that they haven't, and without it being fixed, it's unplayable. Which, you know, is the exact opposite of a dumb reason.

Maybe it's like ME2 and it's just too late to change the text size or they're waiting to reply when they actually have something to say on the topic. The text size was a problem for me too, so I'm hoping they have an response for us.
