-----------------Spoiler Warning-----------------
Since the question was posed to me in various threads I decided to attempt to find some data on the effect of giving the militia free ale. I found none. But as luck would have it my current playthrough was setting up to do this encounter as the last zone prior to the Landsmeet.(Level 20PC)
I ran identicle full militia and knights prep, including Owen, Berwick & Dwyn. Saved at this point for revert to sober. Then aquired the bar and gave the men thier free ale.
Murdocks dialogue assessment of the mens moral was identicle to the sober play-through save one line concerning the mens fearlessness while drunk.

@Level 20pc the militias abilities;
Murdock, Tomas, & the Elite Militia(Full Helm)
aim, critical shot, shattering shot, & scattering shot.

Basic Militia;
shattering shot & scattering shot

All tests done on PS3, Nightmare, No assistance from my group, all auras off. 86 cunning, master stealth rogue in the middle of the barricades only watching.
FIRST SERIES: DRUNK : 5 runs
Worst militia survival: All dead - 1min 48sec {Murdock-45sec} [Tomas-45sec] (Elite-1min,10sec)
Best militia survival: All dead - 2min 40sec {Murdock-2mins20sec} [Tomas-2mins,17sec] (Elite-2mins,40sec)
Militia killing 2 Elite Undead: Best -1st 23sec/2nd 50secs ; Worst - 1st 1min,4sec/2nd 1min,10sec
Standard Militia 1st Deaths: Fastest - 26 sec ; Best - 2mins,7sec

FIRST SERIES: SOBER : 5 runs
Worst militia survival: All dead - 2mins,30sec {Murdock-2mins,20sec} [Tomas-1min,45sec] (Elite-1min,15sec)
Best militia survival: All dead - 3min,29sec {Murdock-3min,1sec} [Tomas-2mins,28sec] (Elite-3mins,29sec)
Militia killing 2 Elite Undead: Best - 1st 18sec /2nd 48 sec ; Worst - 1st 23sec/2nd 37sec **most of these are identicle**
Standard Militia 1st Deaths: Fastest - 20 sec ; Best - 1min,45sec

Observations:
Certain random events such as a late scattering shot at the start of the second wave resulted in a single militia tanking all undead, causing "nearest enemy" cascade zerg upon death resulting in skewed results on 2 runs in sober test cycle. I expect an improved average time in all areas with further tests.

Conclusion:
Hard mode = Drunk. Easy mode = Sober. (Total allied NPC dropped gear value is in the 18-20 gold range. Knight, Dwyn, Thugs, ect. *Experiece possible*)

Bonus: Retested fire trap issue and confirmed it to be a proximety issue. Stand as close to the fire or in front of it to avoid knights on fire.

****FIRST TEST RESULTS LACK TOTAL AREA CONTROL****
Original numbers skewed by lack of control in test area.
PC group now positioned @tavern entrance to ensure zero detection by undead during test period.

All samples taken from the point in time that the elite militia reaches the bottum of the hill and activates the sustained talent, Aim.

1st Series: Drunk (10 samples)
Militia survival duration:
1st death:
Worst: 20 sec
Best: 57 sec
Avg: 37.7 sec

Last man to fall:
Worst: 87 sec
Best: 138 sec
Avg: 109.7 sec

Murdock Survival Rate:
Worst: 43 sec
Best: 116 sec
Avg: 80.9 sec

Tomas Survival Rate:
Worst: 32 sec
Best: 115 sec
Avg: 69.7 sec

Elite Militia Survival Rate:
Worst: 55 sec
Best: 116 sec
Avg: 94.7 sec

1st Elite Undead Survival Rate:
Fastest kill: 30 sec
Slowset kill: 48 sec
Avg: 36.1 sec

2nd Elite Undead Survival Rate:
Fastest kill: 41 sec
Slowest: Failure to kill
Avg: 67.8 sec**

2nd Series: Sober (10 samples)
Militia Survival Rate:
1st death:
Worst: 29 sec
Best: 57 sec
Avg: 36.1 sec

Last man to fall:
Worst: 86 sec
Best: 144 sec
Avg: 99.6

Murdock Survival Rate:
Worst: 49 sec
Best: 120 sec
Avg: 80.8 sec

Tomas Survival Rate:
Worst: 32 sec
Best: 112 sec
Avg: 64.4 sec

Elite Militia Survival Rate:
Worst: 52 sec
Best: 140 sec
Avg: 91.4 sec

1st Elite Undead Survival Rate:
Fastest kill: 27 sec
Slowest kill: 54 sec
Avg: 34.8 sec

2nd Elite Undead Survival Rate:
Fastest kill: 46 sec
Slowest kill: Failure to kill
Avg: 73.6 sec**

**Both Sober & Drunk sample sets failed to kill the 2nd Elite undead on 3 seperate occasions each. Time given for worst kill is equal to the Last man to fall rate for those paticular instances to allow for accurate average times.

Observations:
The survival rate of sober is lower due to higher damage scatter shots lumping enemy groups on to a single militia target resulting in a cascade effect of focus fire. Drunk battles were clearly unfocused 1 vs 1, 1 vs 2, combat till eventual waves overwelm. Melee damage increased during sober samples.

Result: Chaotic occurrences resulting in improved results from basic undead a.i.

I am confidant that this group of samples is as pure as I am able to produce on the PS3.

Very interesting. I always thought that the free ale would've given them a boost since it supposedly relaxes them. Looks like it's more harmful than good. Still, free ale means I can farm gold with shale crystals XD but good find anyway.

I have to wonder if you get the same results on a PC game?

you can get the bar with out giving the men ale, the dialogue line is just the trigger to the intimidation check. after you become partner you are back to the base menu.

Unlock it by talking to the militia in the tavern.

Talk to Lloyd. "I hear youre charging the men for ale."

This will trigger options on how to procede. Intimidate for control of the bar and 80silver, 20 more later in conversation. You can avoid giving the men ale after the intimidation check, pay for it and be acknowledged openly for it, persuade and Lloyd takes credit, intimidate and Lloyd takes credit for it.
