i can understand just transforming into a bear or something for more attack power, but i feel like there is something im missing with the polymorph self spell.

as far as I can tell, i can only attack while polymorphed, it would seem like (especially with the mindflayer, strikes me as a spell casting type of monster) there would be some ability or something to gain advantage in one form over the other depending on the situation. Otherwise it seems like there's no point of using anything except for  whatever is the physically strongest polymorph

Polymorph and shape shifting in general is an area that is very much lacking in NWN2. There are some override packages on the vault that add functionality to the Druid, but not much has been done for the polymorph spell.
