I think a poll is definitely in order for this thread.

1. Never played DAO and liked DA2.

2. Played DAO once through and liked DA2.

3. Played DAO multiple times through and liked DA2.

4. Never played DAO and disliked DA2.

5. Played DAO once through and disliked DA2.

6. Played DAO multiple times through and disliked DA2.

When I first loaded up I thought 'ugh hack n slash' but after a few playthroughs I see all the depth - you've taken out a lot of RPG 'bloat' and at first playing feels naked, but now I like the streamlined style.

* Love the quick health/mana/stam features.

* I like the fighting/party interface, I noticed it says when your party members are diabled - eg knocked down, and it's easy to keep an eye on them without pausing.

* Leveling now explains exactly what your points are doing.

* Skill trees are cool. ESPECIALLY upgrading talents etc :) Reminds me of FF10(is it?)

Will reserve judgement until full retail - I want to see what inventory, skills and character customisation brings. But from the demo I love the look of the game so far and have preordered it.

PC version: Yay, 5th crash in a row on exiting character creation (after 2 complete play-throughs). Not sure if I'm surprised by that.

Hmm so I'm glad that I'm not the only one experiencing crashes in the Demo.  I'm playing on the PC at the moment which is more than capable of running the 1080p res with 2x alias and 8x aniso, so why oh god why does it pause when switching scenes in dialogue?  Most conversations play out like a stilted radio play because of 2-3sec delays switching from one character to the next.  Just waiting for it to appear on the Australian PSN to decide whether I get the PS3 version or PC.  If the PS3 doesn't stuttter, I might just have to get it on PS3 and be damned with my imported save game.

Pros
  • LOVE LOVE LOVE the new art direction! When the dragon landed and changed to human form my mind immediately went.. Flemeth? AWESOME!
  • The combat seems simpler but is certainly more visceral.
  • The story is going to be pretty darn interesting, especially the cut scenes with our Dwarf friend and the Seeker.  Sittin here thinking, what are you after dear?
Cons
  • Stuttering conversations
  • Crashes

Rig
  • Core i5 750
  • Win7 x64
  • AMD 5770 with Latest Catalyst drivers
  • 4Gb Ram

I don't understand how if someone hates DA2 they hate EVERYTHING about it

If someone likes DA2 they LOVE EVERYTHING about it

There's a few middle ground posts, but this thread is ridiculous

Loved that you could still sometimes see space between Hawke's face and his beard. Seriously Bioware? All this crap about how the graphics are so improved (not really seeing it) and you can't fix the beard issue on your default character?! As for the demo all I can say is HEHEHE. The only good parts were when other people besides Hawke were talking.

One thing I forgot to say earlier:

Enemies disappear seconds after being killed. Why? I can't possibly understand why you'd prefer this option. It felt really, really lame to watch as the Darkspawn just faded away almost immediately after hitting the ground. Not only does it just look silly, it was always nice in Origins to be able to witness the amount of destruction you had caused by seeing all the corpses around.

Hey all.First of all, I'd like to say that I'm a big fan of DAO, and I was eager to play the demo to know more about DA2. I didn't really pay attention to all comments from ppl before the demo, cause i think you have to play the game to have an advice. So here is mine.

What i liked :

- overall the new talents system is really better. It's clearer, more complete, with some nice ideas, and it's more congruent.

- thanks to the voices on the main character, he (or she) has much more charism. Compared to a silent, passive hero like in DAO, this is a great improvement.

- game mechanisms are now easier to understand, even if they still are unbalanced (for example, constitution and willpower are still quite useless). At least, something has been done that is nice.

What i didn't like :

- graphisms. They're still 5 years late tchnically. When i see what Bioware did on Mass Effect and ME2, i'm really disappointed to see that DA2 is still like that. Of course it's better than in DAO. But why people only move their head, and the robots way, when they talk ? Why armors are still in 2D (all glory to paper armors !) ? Why are there so few details in the textures ? I must say i played with all settings maxed. And there are still some collision bugs, like hair going through chairs and armors. ME was great on characters animation, armor rendering etc. So why DA2 is so lame ?

- some characters are really ridiculous. First of all, i played on french version, and actors in french are really, really bad. At least, on the french forum, i'm not the only one to say so. We're hugely disappointed. Then, i'd like to ask Bioware this question : why the hell does Flemeth now look like a Walt Disney Witch ? I mean : i expected to see Snow White at any time when Flemeth appeared. In DAO, i remember Flemeth as an old and apparently fragile woman, with mysterious sentences, a wise pragmatism, and still there was something really human about her. It was one my favorite characters, i really loved what you tried to do with her. And in DA2 she's more a dominatrix with poisonned apples. At least, we can say that she's quite... "horny" in some ways... Dudes !!!! WTF with this hair ? WTF with this armor ? WTF with this new personnality ? It's not Walt Disney, it's Dragon Age !!!! She's, at best, ridiculous. Poor Flemeth, seriously...
I won't even talk about women breasts in the game (special thoughts about Isabela...), which are more ridiculous too, than anything else.

- Darkspawn... Now they're vilains from Bioman and Power Rangers. Seriously, Bioware ??? They look like skeletons with fishy armors, and they move like a power angers vilain. That's so ridiculous i can't stand myself from laughing ! And what about 20liters of blood in their body that is overall 17liters ? WTF ?

- you told combats would be more "nervous", more dynamic and faster. Well, now that's what i call a "beat them up". A hack & slash, at best. There's no more tactics to have, no need for pause, and as, anyway, you don't understand a single sh** of what's happening, you don't even need to think. But the game is so easy that you don't really mind of understanding what's happening. And plz, fix that camera...

- combat animation. Again, it's ridiculous. I'd like to try a full mages team. So i can sing "everybody was kung-fu fighting". Seriously, WTF ? They are mages, like bookmworms you know. They could use staves like they did in DAO (i mean, in a normal way). Why the hell do they have now to use them as if they were on a Taekwondo contest ? What's the point ??? I won't even talk about rogues animation too, it's even worse ! OMG, if it doesn't make you laugh, then you have to cry about it. It's lamest thing ever. The guy who had the idea of these animation should be fired and given to wolves in a forgotten valley.

- dialogs. A wheel... I understand that to have the main character speak during dialogs, you have to simplify the system. But a wheel, like in ME ? Seriously ? In ME it was quite good, cause the game was an action RPG, anyway, and dialogs weren't that important. DA2 is supposed to be a whole RPG. And what about the most important thing in the RP aspect ? Now it's a wheel, and worst of all, there are now icons to tell you "beware, this is the answer for a bad guy, this one is for a good guy, and this one is sarcastic... Be warn...". OMG ! Do you really think your customers are so stupid ??? This is bullsh** !

- there is a lot more to say. But i don't want to waste my time. Get someone to translate what is said on french forum, positive advices are pretty rare, but at least the list of how wrong you are, Bioware, is much complete.

Conclusion : i won't buy this game. Without the demo, i may have bought it, not knowing how wrong you did, Bioware.
This game is ridiculous like never ! It's a beat them all with Power Ranger fishes, taekwondo mages and witches from Walt Disney. There's nothing else than fight, which is so easy a dead monkey could beat it. By having the choices you made, Bioware, you are actually showing what you think of your community : you think they all are so idiot they can't find their feet, and you changed a RPG licence to some kind of laughable beat them all. Shame on you ! I really mean it : shame on you ! Where is the BG time, or Planescape Torment ? WTF happened to you ? DAO was a really good game, why did you ruin your own licence that much ?
I only hope that you won't change ME licence in ME3 like you did for DA : i don't want a Shepard with leather armor, a whip, feathers in his ass and dancing on a rainbow.

PS : it's not the good place to talk about it, but i don't even know if there's a place. One year ago, you promise a special event for your community except USA (cause you did a community event only for them). I guess you were mocking us as well.

It was ok some personal niggles some likes some uggh why lord why!

Cutscenes looked good, I can easily see myself being drawn into the story.

Character select well nothing new here but It did hit home the lack of choice, DAO was like getting a box of choloclates for xmas and going ohhh all my favourites are thier, Demo was like getting an open box of choclates with all the strawberry & orange cremes taken out and left with just the coffee.. still edible but leave a slightly bitter aftertaste. (need more choice imho)

Combat I enjoyed felt faster and pathing didnt seem to have issues

I did notice some of the chat felt stilted when I ran through as the mage but same scene as a warrior flowed by that I mean the words they spoke seemed a little off.

Seems very simplified in lots of respects

Compainons look good and Isabella didnt look quite so spongebob squareface (My nephews description of her) as some of the older screenies made her look.

on the whole it came across as decent demo but still room for improvement as a whole.

My thanks to the team for giving the option to view the game before purchase, you can ting the register you have a sale comming up.

p.s Forgot to mention one thing I really wasnt keen on was the art style, nothing I cant get past but its a bit umm lost for words, lets just stick with it just dosnt appeal to me.

Never thought the day would arrive I'd ever have something negative to say about a Bioware game. I've been a loyal fan since Balder's Gate. So it pains me that I should even be feeling this. Note that I played the game on a PC on DX11.

Let me start off with some good things so its not a whine fest.

 The Good:
* While I haven't really been following the game, (I hate spoilers) its nice to see some of the focus of the story isn't all about darkspawn this and darkspawn that. The part with the pirate chick was nice as it gave you a bit of respite from all the doomsday motifs DA:O shoved down your throat.

* The descriptions for the stats are nicely and clearly laid out, gave you a more immediate idea of what benefits you were getting.

* The Templar armor was Nice

* The new spell effects were nice though I feel the kung fu spinning of the staff was a bit much.

Ok So there's not really a whole lot I like about the game. So lets get to the bad points

The Bad:
* Some of the animations, particular the female Hawke running animation, was so god awfully laughable. The part where the templar guy dies, his wifes hands were glitching and her fingers were contorted beyond belief. Overall a lot of the animations are stiff and jarring.

* The graphics while not bad in some areas, where just plain dull in most. Running it on DX11 was hardly a treat for the eyes. The barren landscape was just a painted on texture for the most part. Even the city part was horribly boring in appearance, compared to even the first game.

* Female busts... Good god the pirate chick. I like breasts as much as anybody but c'mon they were just so awfully disproportioned. I found it hard to take the character seriously because they were so laughably distracting. It was like, "Yeah I hear you talkin and I hate to be a pig but god damn women those watermelons of yours are blocking my line of site."

* Combat is just too fast and jarring. Don't get me wrong I like it more fast paced but all the attacks are so quick with so much effects and crap going on its hard to appreciate what is going on. You cut darkspawn in half so easily that you hardly feel the direness of the situation when they complain about the darkspawn waves being never ending. It doesn't feel like a tough enemy your facing, more like fodder for your fancy karate chops "I just lunged forward and with a single swipe of my blade I cut 4 darkspawn in half! Oh whats that you say? 4 more are coming? Oh dear me we are doomed!" Laughable

Now lets get to the games horrible continuity. First and foremost I will assume all here have played DA:O. Lets start with the barren landscape.

  * The first point I want to point out regarding this is that in the original game the horde of darkspawn moved in from the south. They first attacked the Grey Warden place at Osigar (Sp?) before moving onto Lothering as the character progressed through the story. As indicated on the map the horde was moving in a northern direction.

  * In The DA2 demo it was mentioned that Hawke and his family had just barely escaped the darkspawn destruction of Lothering. Furthermore they are being chased by the darkspawn in the demo. This leads me to believe they fled In any direction but south as south would take them straight into the darkspawn advance.

  * So the point I'm trying to make from all this is, if they just escaped the darkspawn horde which was invading from the south, why is the landscape in their escape away from the darkspawn already barren and destroyed? Did the darkspawn decide they hate trees and plant life more then the humans in Lothering so they went on a viscous deforestation campaign? Before the attack on Ostagar when you went out into the woods occupied by darkspawn in DA:O the forest was very much intact.

It doesn't make any sense at all.

Next point of Continuity is about Flemeth, the Gray Wardens and Hawke's family

* Simply put in the first game Flemeth was so adamant about your party doing their jobs and raising an army to stop the darkspawn. She even gave her own daughter to you to help you complete this task. Why wouldn't she try to unite Hawke and friends with the wayward Gray Wardens or at the very least mention them in an attempt to get them to seek the Gray Warden team from DA:O out? After all she mused about your killing the ogre so your battle prowess might come in Handy.

* Presumably the Gray Warden team is still running about. After all in the first game you were still running errands for everybody and their sister when Lothering was finally overrun with Darkspawn. So the whole fate of fereldan is still being decided but hey who cares, lets help you sail off to some distant land instead.

I just don't understand her motives.

Hopefully in the final game a lot of the problems will be adressed but as it stands I was not impressed in the least by the game. Most of what was so flavorful about it seems to have washed away in favor of this more stock experience.

I was worried that I would not like the new combat system, but it's quite awesome! :))

The surprise came from voice acting....flemeth was great, as was isabella and the dwarf... but the rest...I don't know...it seemed very bad...british accent didn't help either...male hawke was particularly annoying!!! He sounded old and way to Shakespearean IMHO ...

I found myself skipping dialogue...that never happened during Origins...or mass effects....and I played those games over, and over, and over again

Hi everyone

The Dragon Age 2 demo is now available on Xbox Live (Gold accounts) and will be up today for PC and Playstation 3.

I am seeing lots of threads with "my demo feedback/impressions/thoughts, etc". Rather than have multiple threads pop up all over the place, this thread is for everyone to post their impressions.

Please say whether you are playing the PC, Xbox 360 or PS3 version and let us know your thoughts about the demo. Both positive and negative feedback is fine (as long as it is constructive. Saying "I didn't like X in the demo and this is why, is fine. Saying "it sucks" is not very helpful. You get the idea).

So please, let us know what you think of the Dragon Age 2 Demo. Posted Image

Played the demo on the PS3 as an apostate Hawke. I thought the new designs for the darkspawn were interesting and it wasn't difficult getting a grasp on the action moves. I liked the new art style, and I enjoyed the beginning: how it conveyed the sense that this was really Blighted land and that the darkspawn had corrupted everything around them. I guess we'll have to wait for DA2 to find out more about Merrill and the Dalish.

- I'd like the nice looking icons back (for items and spells).

- I *need* the tactical view, combat is so tiring and confusing now.

- I still dislike the conversation wheel, I want to know exactly what I ... no, Hawke is going to say.

- Great combat. Everyone is a superhero now. Can I get costumes instead of armour ? Maybe as DLC ?

- The skill tree is not very accessible, now I really need a printed manual to inspect all my options comfortably.

I'll still get DA2, but I hope that someone reuses the artwork to make a DA2 module for Origins so I can really enjoy it.

I had fun playing it. :) I understand that it's a demo and not all the bells and whistles are going to be active.

There were some things that irked me... Like a pause in the dialogue between Cass and Varric due to loading, but I think that was due to it being a demo. Hopefully that doesn't happen in the full version of the game, because it broke the immersion for me. The same thing happened when switching between cutscenes and live action. But I expect the full version will be more fluid when switching between things like that. Or maybe it was just my computer, I don't know.

I absolutely love the music. It makes me so happy that I pre-ordered the signature edition and that I'm getting the soundtrack. I am going to listen to it EVERYWHERE I go.

I really like the splashes of color everywhere (except for the blightlands, which are supposed to be ugly, anyway) it really makes the game pop. It's a lot prettier than Origins.

I really like the animations for my rogue... I felt cool, doing backflips and stabbing people and zooming around the screen in a puff of smoke. I never really did pause and play before with Origins, but DA2 makes me do it, it sort of forces me to be tactical player. Makes me use my brain and think more about what I'm going to do.

My only real complaint is that March 8th is two weeks away.

I played as a male warrior on PC with DX11 at 1920x1200 on Windows 7.

Firstly, let me say that this demo showcases an amazing achievement, congratulations.

The dialog is involving, and the main character models look pleasing and refined.

However, being a DAO/NWN/BG/IWD player, i have mixed feelings at the loss of some familiar aspects of those games.

Combat
1. The fluid new animations look fabulous, abeit too cartoony as combatants can leap or get thrown huge distances. The pace is really frenetic, though i had no problem. Unfortunately, i feel there is a big loss of tension in the battles; consequently they were less satisfying than in DAO. It may be because the combatants are quite capable. Unlike DAO, both early ogre fights are easy. There's no need to manage the abilities of the team, just charge ahead. It's easy to miss enjoying the exploits of the party members, as things happen fast everywhere.

Annoyances

2. The UI looks plainer compared to DAO, and lacks any period feel, which is disappointing. Unfortunately, it is also a bit more clunky and unintuitive than before.

3. The button to select your whole party seems to be missing. You'll have to press Control-A with your non-mouse hand. (Just stop playing to eat that cookie).

4. It's far too easy to unintentionally click on the level-up glyph of the character portraits. Can you imagine trying to select your Mage in the heat of combat, and the level-up screen for your Warrior pops up? Constantly. The effect is really jarring.

Firstly, the level-up screen should pre-select the character whose glyph you clicked on, instead of defaulting to the first party member everytime. Secondly, make the arrow glyph smaller - a lot smaller.

5. The thick red font that identifies enemy combatants in the demo is really illegible. If it plagues the whole game, it will detract from and slow down gameplay and make it borderline not worthwhile since you'll never understand what you're fighting and what tactics to use.

6. You can press Tab to highlight enemies, but their type is not shown unless you mouse over each one. It's very easy to miss enemies even when highlighted because of the color scheme. Did i mention the illegible font??

7. I really miss having the full freedom of the camera including isometric view. Sigh.

8. Loading ... takes ... too much ... time ... Even on my high-spec rig, the voice-overs are always delayed a bit once you've selected a choice, enough to distract from immersion. Put another way, the conversation inter-cutting doesn't quite flow technically.

9. The Character Record, Skills etc were on tabs in DAO, so you could switch directly. In DA II, they are modal, so you have to click a dismissal button. This is a step backwards in usability.

Bugs
10. Setup reported successfully upgrading my DX to June 2010, but in fact it failed as it could not find a xxx43.dll when the demo tried to start. So i downloaded the DX redist, and ran setup as administrator to get it sorted.

11. On my second demo playthrough, the game hung after the Design Character Appearance screen.

12. I've not been able to login from within the game, even after repairing the firewall rules from the configuration menu. I confirmed that i could login from DAO, so it's a mystery.

13. The names of the firewall rules added by the game has a glitch. String placeholders are not being replaced.

Questions
Is it just me, or does anyone find the demo's narrative to be really jarring. Frankly, i have no idea what happened after meeting Flemeth. Why was i suddenly fighting for Isabella??

Overall
From what the demo has presented, I'm looking forward to the story and character development of DragonAge II. The gameplay and UI interaction, maybe less so.

I like DAO and its toolset. I support innovation and will get DragonAge II, but it's edging away from from aspects i found over time that i like. I hope Bioware continues to cultivate their BG/IWD gameplay legacy for PC. I'm sure they can optimize the PC and Console experience separately.

My PC impressions as an "older" gamer...

I prefer the look of the Origins darkspawn. Found them far more creepy, these simply looked cartoony. Did like the armor/helmet distinction with the darkspawn with crossbows. Didn't like the fact that emissaries look totally different from normal darkspawn. Human mages don't, why should darkspawn ? (Awaiting flame and codex entry explanation :) ).

Couldn't get grips with weapon graphics.. simply not practical. This may be fantasy but some "realism" is required to enable immersion.

I feel the blood, guts and gore frequency detracts from the combat rather than enhances it and I get the feeling it's there to appeal to kids rather than a mature audience, which I know it can't be as this game is rated mature. The occasional display in Origins was more acceptable and meaningful (although slow motion ogre bashing could be annoying).

Loved the new look Flemeth. Flemeth never seemed to look right in Origins for her role, although I know there are some story reasons she may have looked like she did.

Combat is fast and frenetic which I quite like although targetting is a pain. I still have fond memories of hex based wargames though so the lack of isometic view was annoying when planning the battle. I often have to pause, not to plan but to simply target, especially as area effect abilities cannot be targetted at an enemy. It is really annoying when you click on the ground to realise that something just blocked the cursor and the skill doesn't activate.

Dislike the main UI, looks too simplistic and character portraits are too small. Also I couldn't tell if my healing potions weren't working because of cooldowns.

So far haven't explored a lot of the dialogue as I wish to get into it more when I have the full game. I did have some difficulty simply because of voice recognition. "But mom Cousland is alread dead". Haven't been able to get emotionally attached to any character but it may be I simply need to give it time.

Like the tutorial aspect of "over the top" scene, but for a casual gamer, then going back to level 1 may be frustrating. I appreciate what the demo was trying to do in getting the player some feel of different "levels" but found the experience a bit disjointed and certainly doesn't help sell, what to my mind is the prime reason for getting bioware games: storytelling.

Not a bad demo in all (although a more up to date build to avoid PC crashes may have been advisable). Certainly hasn't put me off buying the full game, but having so much restricted, e.g inventory, within the game, also limited the experience for me.
