Played through the demo twice now as 2h warrior and archer rogue. A lot of what I think has all ready been said, but I'll go ahead and say it anywhom.

Pros
- I like the direction you went with combat in terms of trying to make it more responsive and quicker. There were quite a few times in DAO where I'd just watch my characters shoot arrows, bolts, swing swords and maces into enemies just to miss, and vice versa. Got... dull.
- Character textures seem to be higher resolution, or at least crisper, which is pretty nice.
- Whoever was in charge of the changes to archer should get a large bonus. They're pretty sick (minus the lack of the quiver - I'd say they'd be perfect if not for that lame omission).
- Aside from some minor issues I have with Hawke's, the VA is pretty good; at its best it's freaking great and at its worst it's passable.

Cons
- While I liked the combat's direction, the execution feels really wrong. I feel like all the animations are fast forwarded and have absolutely no sense of weight. Some are just way too over the top, especially the dual-wielding rogues. In the second half, I couldn't ever tell what Isabella was actually doing as she was just jumping and leaping everywhere. This combined with the ever-so-blatant weapon trails and "zipping" of all the melee attacks, it just leaves the combat looking too confused.
- Unfortunately I can't help but laugh at the way the darkspawn run at you, especially when they're in a group. Considering them being menacing, threatening and dangerous plays a heavy part in the DA lore, this is really bad.
- I find the new look of the darkspawn to just be really bad. And the Ogre... was that one dying from a disease?
- The balance of combat shown in the demo is really off for a Normal difficulty. It's pretty much AoE galore, especially on my run with the archer. It kinda makes tactics useless when you realize it's extremely easy just to spam Cone of Cold, Fireball, the exploding arrow (archers) and Fireball on everything.
This has me dreading the fact that you decided that friendly fire should only be on in Nightmare, as I think friendly fire is really needed. Hell, it would have been far better just to have FF as a toggeable option in the menus. But what's done is done, I suppose.
- Needs more double-D, teacup style breasts with even moar cleavage. Oh, and please more ass shots of Isabella, like something similar to Miranda. That's the only way of making characters sexy and attractive, you know. (/sarcasm - you're better than this, Bioware :().

Mehs (stuff that isn't a big deal)
- I found... the "dragon's"... character design to be really weird. She's supposed to be old, but she has the body of an 18 year old athlete's.
- New art style in general for the characters. They're... different, and I have no strong opinion on this at all.
- The new menu. I liked DA's more as it has more personality, but whatever.
- Only way to make Hawke not sound insane is to just keep choosing the same dialogue branch (top, middle or bottom).
- Paying attention to the over-top animations - like the heavy looking charge into an enemy before slashing with that, what, 6' long sword - just to see the enemy health bar go down a small bit is off-putting.
- The darker red text for bosses and elites is really hard to read, especially on the longer names.
- Feels like mages and archers are definitely going to be overpowered end game, though this is obviously just speculation.

This sounds more negative than the way I feel. I was fearing I'd be so disappointed that I'd be canceling my preorder, but overall I've decided to keep it. I'm not thrilled with the changes, and a lot of friends are cancelling theirs, but I'm willing to give the full game a shot out of respect I've had for you guys since the Baldur's Gate and Icewind Dale days.

Going by the demo I canceled my pre-order. I may still purchase when I get reviews on the full game but the demo scared me off.

The entire thing screams console. The UI is bad and no overhead view? No thanks.

Very, very disappointed.

For some the Chantry woman in armor (forgot her name) at the start has black hair in-game, but in the cutscene at the end she has white hair?! Is it just me?

Varric has that effect on people  LOL

No, I noticed it too.  It's the lighting.  There's a ray of strange white light  shining down on Cassandra in that scene.

Not really. Most people who complain in this thread are posting multiple times.

Not only that, but if you actually read many of these complaints, you get the impression that these poeple don't understand that they  just played a Demo.  It's almost... Bizzare.

People complaining that DA2 is nothing but a hack-n-slash  (hello, you do realize that Bioware put this demo out to DEMOnstrate the combat, yes?)  And even worse, I saw  few  people  actually  complaining about the story.    Really?  The Story? did you expect any kind of STORY to be fleshed out in a friggin DEMO?  Absurd.  It's like sitting down for a big  thanksgiving dinner, taking  only a small bite of Turkey, and then coming on a message board and complaining that your dinner wasn't very filling.

There's opinions, and then there's really SILLY complaints.  we're seeing alot of the latter on this 100+ page thread.

the problem here is that the points i didn't like were the exact one showcased in the demo. 1 we already know the hero in this game is human, elf's are people too! i like playing as a pointy eared stuck up bastard, the point of a fantasy game is to live out your fantasy (i suppose dwarfs also exist in fantasies for those of you who care for them). 2 combat, all show and no finesse. i liked the realistic feel of combat in the first game. in all honesty, can you do a backflip in the middle of combat? i can't, and i've studied martial arts for nigh unto 7 years. flips and dives and rolls are useless, and simply gimmicky. it's like kids in a candy store when people see fancy combat.

On the PC, did anyone else have some issues targeting their AOE's? I had to literally click on the ground to set them off, and couldn't do so if there was a mob (friendly or not) on the spot I was clicking. That really didn't make it very convenient to place an AoE in the optimal position. I had to carefully move my cursor to find those tiny free spots between Aveline and the cluster**** of Darkspawn surrounding her OR place it on the outskirts of the pack, thus missing half the group with my spell.

Sorry if this has been mentioned before, I couldn't be arsed to go through more than a hundred pages to see if it was.

I really liked the demo but as I understand, This is happening right after/during the battle in Ostagar? Then is Flemeth using some kind of magic to look like that or is it just badly done?

As for the battle (I played on PC), I really liked the fighting style but when using a 2h sword, it felt to easy. I liked DAO when the 2h sword gave the feeling of being really heavy to swing as well as the mage, i liked the older style better than the new disco style...

I felt tho that the fighting made the battle to easy as it hardly needed any pausing at all, and I was able to kill several darkspawn in just one attack. (it was very cool done tho with all the blood and limps flying everywhere.)

As for a minor detail, the big curves that the women have... why ?

Just played it again with female mage...kung fu mages are ridiculously overpowered...I'm guessing at higher levels of difficulty and with friendly fire, experience may improve....a bit.

Both female and male Hawke voiceovers are horrible! Couldn't you get a proper voice director?

Why,oh Bioware, couldn't you spend another year or two, and make this game the best it can be, award your fans with another gem like first DA/kotor/mass effect? Why, oh you greedy #*%@!$ !

okay, now i played the entire demo and these are my impressions during the game:

the tone already feels like a movie. It's not bad, but simply not how i like my dragon age served
why isn't the chara creation screen coming before i play anything at all? i don't want to play with the default character, EVER.
HUD... nice that it wastes less space, but why does everything have to be at the bottom. Not sure if i like the style either, but that just might be because DA:O just looked differently
the combat does feel more effective, but what's with all the whirling around that the mage is doing? it looks ridiculous.
for some reason i keep having a hard time findign the right distance for spells. or maybe it's really hard to find a valid spot to palce my AoE
i miss zooming out all the way.
no friendly fire?
menus sometimes feel unfinished... lack of Background the problem?
why are the Hawke family so effective against darkspawn, when the warden and the others had such a hard time at the start? Maybe explained through story? Maybe need suspension of disbelief because of reworked combat?
nice voice for Marian Hawke, but i would still prefer to give her a voice myself (meaning, i imagine it).
warrior attacks make damage and don't even connect?
Menues feel .... "blown up" and are fullscreen. probably to help the console people, but it's yet another thing that pulls me out of the world. Seemed easier to understand in DA:O, but maybe i'm just used to those and with a little dedication i'll easily understand these too.
aand there we have it, already she says something other than i intended.
cursor final? odd to leave that the same as in DA:O.
only 1 type of potion? i'd miss choosing the crappier potions for mages and the better for tanks, but it does save precious space on the quickbar.
shame i can't talk with the group. i understand it's a pressing moment, but i'd kind of like to get up to speed with who everybody in the family is. instead of: "friendly sister", "rival brother", "mother that you sometimes notice tagging along"
AVELINE DRINK YOUR GODDAMN POTION WHEN I TELL YOU TO DRINK YOUR GODDAMN POTION.
and bethany is dead and i don't care, because i didn't ever get to know her. I cared a lot more about Mhairi dying at the joining in Awakening.
oooh hawke that definitely wasn't what you were supposed to say.
Flemeth? aren't you supposed at the wilds, or did i already "kill" you by now? and what's with the hair horns? i don't mind the wardrobe change, you gave up on appearing old and frail, i understand.
i want to tell Flemeth "i won't do it" even if i end up doing it... but whatever.
yay a mention of me and my ragtag group of heroes!
aw wesley... that was sad though... except the part where i wondered how aveline got a dagger to pierce through a metal plate.
what? he? what's happening? why are things happening so fast? why did Varric join me without a word? why did Isabella join without a word? why are we already fighting YET AGAIN? i want a rest! Why did i change clothes? why do i have new magics? did the demo just jump forward to the next fight? WHY? fighting isn't exactly the thing i care most about.
I STILL can't talk with my team?
getting really hard to have an overview of the battle
why exactly am i fighting? guess i'll have the answers in the full game.
No you didn't! i have no idea what's going on! tell me, please!
oh god hawke, you just needed to say "castillon needs to cheer up", what you said was just painful to hear. the intention was good though.
did someone just teleport towards me???
ah answers.
i see bioware learned how to make long hair. good.
and Bioware still mantains that blood and gore means adult and dark....

Did you play beyond the exaggerated part at the start? Because killing several Darkspawn with one attack only really happened there.

Aside from the exaggerated part the women's curves weren't excessive either. Bethany's cupsize went down a lot between that part and the actual gameplay. Isabela still had a nice pair of knockers, but they work for her.

Will PC players be able to use a gamepad? I played this on console and then on my PC. This game just feels as if it were meant to be played on a gamepad rather than a keyboard and there wasn't any support for it in the demo.

If that's not the case then it's fine. I think I just need to get used to using the keyboard and mouse a little faster than on the first game... Plus I feel that the keyboard offers way more functionality than the pad. It would just be nice to have the option to lie on my bed and play the game from there.

I was also wondering if DX11 features will be implemented into the game... such as tessellation for some of the flat textures on Armor and the flat textures on the ground. I was too afraid to activate DX11 on the demo since a buddy of mine told me it was pretty buggy at the moment.

Also, why Motion Blur and the Higher graphical settings were locked on this demo? Is it because this an old build of the game? If so, can you give an estimate as to how old this build is. I've seen this same demo at certain trade shows a while back. Is it the same one?

The Tactical settings seemed a bit glitchy. Is this fixed in the final game?

I'm sure most of these questions, if not all of them, have been answered... but I'm not about to wade through 106 pages. <_<

I enjoyed the demo - although got a bit sick of fighting the same enemies over and over again - I also thought it was weird jumping from the intro to the bit with Isabella.

Played as a rogue...much better than in DA:O

Just a shame Isabella isn't as hot as Morrigan ;)

I played it on the PC and it was very 'consoley' to put it mildly, which matters less if you are not playing it on a PC of course, haha. But I would say "dumbed down" is an accurate description regardless.

But what really really REALLY turned me off was the animation: in Dragon Age 1 it is quite slick, smooth and fluid... in Dragon Age 2 you attack in absurdly fast jerky movements that look idiotic and 'gamey'. Rogue was worst of all... just preposterous.  Even the running animations look awkward and unnatural.

I am very very disappointed and to be honest by the time I finished the demo I went from a Dragon Age enthusiast to someone counting the days until Witcher 2 comes out :-)

You can't target an enemy, you have to target the area around them. Hopefully it'll get sorted.

All I can want fixing is the camera zoom, the loading screens, autotarget and the AoE targeting. Apart from that it's great! :D

Pros:
Overall I was very pleased with the demo.

Cons: The first two point are hopefully error/bugs related to the demo and is/will be fixed in the real game.
- The dialogue audio was f**ked up (extremely low and with a lot of "echo"), it helped changing the settings to stereo but it shouldn't have been necessary.
- The eyelashes looked weird, like a texture error.
- It kind of annoyed me that I could only target my AoE abilities on the ground and not also on a creature. It made it harder to actually use an AoE ability when the enemies were clustered together.

An Open Letter to the Good People of Bioware from the
posters in this thread.

Dear game developer, there is something you should know.  We are imbeciles.

First of all, what in the Makers name is a Framing Device?
We, breathing primarily through our mouths, cannot tell the difference between
the elements of a story exaggerated by an unreliable narrator and the regular
parts, even when they are side-by-side and explained to us. Please make all
parts mundane. We don't care for fun nor do we exaggerate in our daily lives.

Secondly, we miss the old combat. We prefer our combat to
consist of standing in a single place and enacting a combat mechanic inexplicably
not as dynamic as the one from the original KOTOR. Any combat that doesn't feel
like a economics exam on utility maximization is unacceptable.

Thirdly, we don't like breasts. Please do not look into
that.

Fourthly, our shirts are stained with food we did not manage
to get in our faces; we must clean them, and consequently we have little time
for storytelling. We are impatient.  We're impatient. This means we have no time to
consider a 45 minute demo might not have the full range of the games mechanics
and features.  Remember, we base all our opinions
on a selective memory of games we have not played in years, and despite having
played dozens of RPG's, still haven't figured out that having five dialogue
choices doesn't mean having five outcomes.

Fifthly, we are blind, and cannot see any graphical improvements.
This is unacceptable. Inform the art department.

Sixthly, graphics don't matter you sellouts! Product sales
is not a popularity contest.

Seventhly, we don't like the professionally done voice
acting. Please find some higher level of voice acting in the future. If a grade
above professional does not exist, invent one.

And lastly, for future reference, we don't care for storytelling.
We prefer shallow tales that allow us to play a shorter charter, or one with
pointed ears. This focus for the sake of narrative disturbs and frightens us.
When we hear our character speak, it pushes us dangerously close to forming a emotional
connection with what is happening in the game. Remove this. Recommendation: the
protagonist should start with amnesia. Also, quests should be simple FedEx ones
where we take a object form plot point a to plot point b.. Wait, deliver
something for Flemeth? Ok, good, you have the second one covered.

Just to reiterate, we are idiots, and therefore conflate criticism
with taste and taste with intelligence.

We are unpleased because being unpleasable is our pleasure.

Yours, Greg Johansson

Based on what? I see plenty of people praising the demo here. It seems like people will make statements like these to discredit criticism.

Some perhaps, but in general, people are more likely to speak up to complain than to praise. It's the American way, you see.

You're just pulling that out of your ass. I can look at any review system and in most cases see that more positive reviews are made for popular items than negative. Go look at random item reviews on Amazon and tell me that more people post negative things than positive.

Believe me or not, this is common knowledge, and backed by social psychology.

5. Played DAO once through and disliked DA2.

I´m a 3 ^_^
Have played through DA:O plus 30 times and I love it! I have already played through the PC demo as all classes and I love the new combat, especially for mage. The new staffanimations are pure gold! I always run a mage unarmed in DA:O :P

And I must say, I´ve read a few pages here and I dont understand some people complaining that the choices have been taken away from them. That they can´t talk to Isabella before they have to save her ass... I mean, come on... It´s a ****ing demo!!  Do you honestly think that this is exactly how the story will play out?!
It´s called a demo for a reason you know....

Yes, Bioware needs to definitely fix the character creator. Patch it before the game is released or release a stand alone that works for the first cutscene because if my character has a totally different looking face, and she will, why on earth would I want to play default for the first part of the game. That doesn't make any sense at all. Bioware, most of us are NOT using your default characters.

I'm definitely a 3 but don't like what I've mentioned above.

After coming to terms with the 'experience' of the demo and my first reply, all I can say is I do not understand how anyone can like the demo if they liked DAO.

- The graphics are totally bland in comparison to DAO (char models have more polys it seems, but this is only benefit)
- Lothering landscape is some bizarre nuclear-blast landscape, kind of Sci-Fi, not DAO style at all.
- The level forces you to walk along a 1m wide path. (This is particularly shocking, as games back in 2001 allowed more sideways movement in an environment you are supposedly traversing).

- And the worst offender of all - The UI is black. Thats all you can see, especially at 1600res or so. Its just black with dark brown buttons & icons. I can't see anything.

Once again - Its totally diffeent to DAO, and contains nothing of the world-feel that DAO did.
I don't understand how some of us cannot like it at all, and other seem to be fallign over themselves to praise it.

At the moment, I can only think of one thing that really bugs me about DA2, which I realised while playing the demo: I can't stand the way that the female characters' heads loll from side to side while they run with their weapons sheathed! Their head movement makes it seem like they're running through a field full of daisies, singing "la-de-da-de-daaa"! I've never seen anyone move their head from side to side like that while they run :pinched:. It's particularly noticeable with female Hawke.

I'm not normally easily bugged by such things, but it puts me off so much that it might stop me being able to play as female Hawke :(. Maybe if I can give her bigger hair, it won't be so noticeable.

Have we already discussed the fact that it looks like a console game?

EDIT: Oh yeah.

I played on the PC, which is why the console resemblance upset me. But I liked the gameplay itself, especially as a rogue - as others have mentioned it feels more "rogue-y". Also, I wasn't able to put the graphics any higher than "Medium" and I'm not sure if I set up the screen dimensions correctly (my monitor is widescreen), so I wouldn't want to make a full judgement until I can install the full game with the highest graphics settings.

LOVE the new skill tree.

Had a bit of trouble with AoE spells - I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong because sometimes they worked and sometimes not. Do I need to left or right click, do I need to be aiming directly at an enemy or not... it's not clear.

When playing I thought that a person who'd never played Origins would really like DA2 - most of what I didn't like was "ew it's not like Origins", so if you have no expectations I think it's pretty good. Nothing I didn't like would cause me to cancel my pre-order.

Still looking forward to it - only 2 weeks to complete a canonical Origins/Awakenings warden!
