has anyone had any issues with installing the demo? I've tried it three times now and it continues to say that "This application has failed to start because 'd3dx_43.dll' was not found"

Any ideas on how to fix it?

PC demo

- everything is going to fast, sometimes i don't know what's going on - fight - cutscene - fight - dialog etc - all in two minutes.

- combat looks good but again, i'm dancing on the battlefield, killing everyone around without even trying to. I felt like no skills were needed. I miss friendly fire, it forced me to fight more tacticly.

- Too much slashing hordes of enemies (i prefere one or two but inteligent and dificult)

- dialog options.. it's hard to say cause it's demo - i hope dialogs will be long and interesting.

- subtitles size is good for me, i play on 15"laptop.

- landscapes in demo are very boring and kirkwall is totally empty - maybe it's because of the story.

- new graphic style in MY OPINION is worse. I dont't like plastic faces, weird eyes and lips and huge female breasts. Also i don't like this crazy blood but i can turn it off i hope.

- I prefere more traditional, "elfish" interface but this one is ok too.

- I stucked in textures few times

- demo crashed when i used AA (but it's technical issue)

that's all i can say after playing demo, i hope it's not going to be easier and easier game allowing me to click y/n choices, kill button, and protecting me from thinking ;)

sorry for my terrible english;)

I'm pretty disappointed. KOTOR is much better in my opinion, voice acting, story and the overall feel was just much better. It feels like gore and "the other stuff" that's three letters long are there to cover all these not so good parts and that's a bad thing. I don't care about those things. Visually it wasn't that good to be honest and voice acting felt distant. Isabella's absolutely huge racks were distracting and the last suggestion made her look even more ****ty...

Finished a female mage playthrough of the demo last night and a male rogue playthrough and I have to say I found them both very enjoyable!

Things I liked:

1. When I jumped in as a female mage I was immediately struck by how much more fun mages were to play. I found mages in DA: O to be powerful, but very boring.

2. With the mage, I was shocked to have my butt handed to me during the part with the ogre. I had eschewed area damage spells for healing spells figuring that Avaline and Carver could take it and they got swarmed and overwhelmed quickly. I found that while playing "action" style was fun as all hell, pausing and issuing commands ended up being key to surviving, which is awesome.

3. Like that healing potions are on more of a cooldown now.

4. Thank you for making archery fun. Also, I love love love that archer Hawke bust out a "why you gettin' up in my grill?" knife when enemies get too close. It's the little things.

Things I didn't like:

1. I know that this is just the demo, but the animations and dialogue did feel a little choppy at points.

2. While I think the dialogue wheel is cool, the tone difference between sarcastic Hawke and aggressive Hawke caught me by surprise. I found that if I want to be douchey, sarcastic Hawke is actually the way to go.

3. While I found playing a mage to be a little challenging, I found playing a rogue to be almost too easy.

That's me thoughts, whatever they're worth.EDIT: Played on Xbox 360

Now removed by a night's sleep from the initial immediacy of my three playthroughs, I think the graphical/playstyle/animation design overall is pointed at a different and much younger audience than me and my peers, but I'm not within the standard devation in the demographics I am sure. These design elements in Origins were much more harmoneous with my sense of 'game', but my faith in the quality of your (Bioware's) writers prompts me to overlook the growing sense of alienation for now, assured that the storyline will more than adequately compensate.

Those of us veteren gamers, now aging in this strange new world, must find the wisdom to reconcile ourselves to our continuing pilgrimmage through life within an increasingly alien cultural landscape.

Now this I agree with.  The game is definitely geared to the younger crowd, but I'll play it anyway though I think it may be time to move away from Bioware and find another company that creates rpgs the way they are supposed to be made.  Now I'm not disappointed, but DA2 is definitely in the direction of Mass Effect 2 and oh well.  I can only hope that the romances are deeper than ME2s or I will for sure be moving on.  Better no romance than a half assed one.

What are we talking when we say younger crowd, 25 and younger? 20 and younger? I'm not an ancient gamer by any stretch of the imagination, but at 33 I'm mighty happy with the style.

Hey, make generalisations, we all do it from time to time. But I don't think you're on the money with this one.

And I'm, yes, 49 and enjoy a good game when I'm not busy with life and writing novels (I'm an author).  It is not a generalization to say that Bioware had a certain market in mind when they created this game.  Yes some older people will like it, but they still had the 17 to 25 yr olds in mind when they created the game.

That´s accually because of a buff she puts on that is called "Shield Defense".

the cutscene introducing Varic's metting with Hawke is a bit messed up I think

I was playing a warior and Carver died in the Wilds so it's kind of strange to see alive and well during Varic's first time meeting Hawke in Kirkwall.

Ya either an error or just a pre-made cutscene that allows the player character to be dropped in.

Still it is a fun demo.

I noticed something, might have been mentioned just don't want to bother looking through 109 pages for it, that was just plain wrong.
I only noticed this on my last play-through as an male archer rogue but it may have well occurred during others.
During the battle with the Ogre Carver dies and then in the following cut movie while getting stolen from or during the meeting with Isabella he's shown alive and well again while Bethany is nowhere to be found.

EDIT: It got mentioned in a post while I was writing this one, imagine the odds.

Played the demo through three times now, with all the different classes. The good:
- The combat:
Loved it! There's a feeling of more to do now, when you're in combat. It's much more fast paced, but there's still plenty of room to strategize and issue orders. Also, if you are the type, you can just let your party go about their business and just around killing hurlocks - which is good fun. Seeing as normal was very easy, I'll probably play on hard. In Origins I always played easy or normal, so DAII seems to be quite a bit easier than its predesessor.
Also, my choice of class has always been rogue, but damn, magic is awesome now! Definitly starting with a mage this time around.
The characters: Almost everybody seems quite interesting, and I feel I can see possibilities for really interesting characters in all of them.
Character animation/styling: While everybody looks a lot more interesting than in Origins, I can't help but think it might have been stylized a bit too much. I like it, and I think I'll get used to it quickly. Also: Is Isabella just Miranda in a pirate costume? The size of her chest and the absence of her clothing is... a bit much I might say. Don't get me wrong, I'm no prude (21 year old, very liberal, male, from Denmark), but I just don't think it's necessary for her to be that lightly clad.
Leveling/abilities: The talent tree is really, really great. The new abilities are better and feel way more potent than in Origins. Add to that, showing stats is great when choosing stats.

The bad:
Itemization:
I like the look of armor and weapons, but my main dissapointment of the game is the lack of outfitting your henchmen. What I loathed in Mass Effect 2 was being unable to gear up my entire party. It's a major step down in my opinion. I know about being able to upgrade the armor of partymembers, but it's just not enough in my opinion. Stick with being a RPG instead of a dumbed down action game...
Hurlocks: Come on, they look amazingly stupid. I loved the way more sinister look from Origins. Now they just look stupid and mindless. Ogres as well. Look way to stylized for my taste.
Conversations: I'm not awefully keen about the conversation wheel. I like having the main character talk, but it just bothers me, not knowing exactly what I'll say in a given situation. It really distances me from the game, when I just choose the direction I'm going, but not exactly where and how I'll get there. Furthermore I'm not entirely certain on the voice work. Oh, the actors are fine, but I am bored to death with overexaggerated British accents. Especially the male Hawke sounds downright annoying at times. I prefer British to American, far and away, but this is a bit much to be fair.

All in all I like the game a lot, and I'm looking forward to the 11th of March a great deal, but I do think that while making the game "more exciting" and streamlined, they dumbed it down a great deal. Same thing with Mass Effect 2 combared to 1. With Mass Effect I like almost everything better in the first one, except the combat, and I fear it'll be the same way with Dragon Age :?

I noticed more people complaining about how worser it is compared with the Dragon Age: Origins Saga, and something about an ruined game... blablabla....it is an inrevirsible process, cause the game has already gone Gold.

Guys, don't forget : IT'S BIOWARE.

They know what they are doing (at least I hope so) and they won't let you down so easily.

I played on PC, here is my small feedback:

I beg you bioware, add an option at least to disable hit lag, because I think that ridiculous animation pacing is here to stay no matter what :/ (like rogue's jump animation).

Another thing is how loading is handled in DA2. In any other game from bioware, including the first DA I never had to wait for an animated sequence or dialogue to load, and in DA2 demo every 30s game was stopping to load some data. It may work better on consoles, with less memory and quicker data transfers, but my experience with PC version was rather disappointing. My PC has no problems with other current generation of games on high details.

Characters are slightly sliding on the ground while running, and Isabela looked like she's on roller skates.

Faces look better when still, but there are more glitches when they deform, especially noticeable on Isabela. Again, it was never that visible in ME series or the first Dragon Age.

I like that this time we are fighting hordes of enemies, and it looks like there will be a bit more action than usually (liek), hopefully not by the expense of story, dialogues and exploration.

Overall, if the demo is a good indication of the final product quality, I won't buy it.

Have played through DA:O plus 30 times and I love it! I have already played through the PC demo as all classes and I love the new combat, especially for mage. The new staffanimations are pure gold! I always run a mage unarmed in DA:O :P

And I must say, I´ve read a few pages here and I dont understand some people complaining that the choices have been taken away from them. That they can´t talk to Isabella before they have to save her ass... I mean, come on... It´s a ****ing demo!!  Do you honestly think that this is exactly how the story will play out?!
It´s called a demo for a reason you know....

I've played a few demos which let one sample all the mechanics in the game, so that you know quite fully what to expect. They didn't assume familiarity with a genre. I can understand if some people think a favorite feature is missing if it isn't in a demo.

The sequence with Isabella wasn't particularly informative. Instead of more combat, they could have let one explore Kirkwall a bit to see how that works (stealing, trading, conversing etc). Ideally, a demo would be representative of the whole.

I just tried the 1980 x 1080 resolution and after playing the demo 6 times I was surprised to see so much people saying the GUI was all they could see. Maybe the lower resolutions make it bad, but on PC highest demo settings I have no complains.

Yes the game is more action oriented, but I found strategy in it, especially after the tutorial when the enemies didn't come in hordes that die(by 3) when you press a button.

I liked the voice acting. Not perfect, but some were quite good. Especially female hawke, loved it. And no the dialog wheel is not exactelly ME2. Sometimes you would get more friendship by selecting the lower "though" option, like if you stand up for your sister in the face of the templar.

And what people are calling "B - neutral options" I'm actually finding it to be more of a "smartass sometimes funny" option.

If you are a player who tried to make you Dog duel loghain in the landsmeet just for the amusing dialog I'm sure you are enjoying it as much as I am.

EDIT: Just played on the PS3 and the pc version just feels much better. Surprisingly I found the PS3 to have longer loading times and worse graphics than on my PC.

I think....the Ogre's health is just too high...

With the streamlined and sped up combat. Running into the ogre to slowly take off tiny pieces of it's health was a bit of an Anti-'Fight like a spartan, think like a general' moment.

The rest of the combat felt good though. Real good. But just lower the Health by about 20 - 30% and I think you'd be on the money.

I killed him, and it didn't feel too hard, BUT apparently it was too hard for the A.I. because all of the A.I. controlled characters died, while I was left to fight the 3/4 health of it that was left, which I did with Bethany who I was controlling. I felt like the A.I. was "dumber" in this demo than it was in Origins. I hope this doesn't mean I won't be able to rely on it to heal and I'll have no choice but to be a healer, because that's not what I want to be. (And yes, I do know you can switch characters, but if we have to constantly switch characters that will really kill the flow of gameplay.)

I agree with peoples' disappointment with the graphics. I hope this is just the demo. Doesn't look like the photos we've been shown. Environment looked great but the characters.... I thought they looked better in Origins.

PC as Male Mage.

Graphics I had some screen tearing maxing everything out (mostly on the floor) and turning the camera a particular direction. I turned it down to Medium and it went fine and still was reasonably graphically pleasing.

I was confused why there were dead bodies with gear on them but I couldn't change my inventory. I would understand if it were potions but why have a sword on a dead body (not a hurlock, but like a loot chest body) that you can't even use?

I found combat honestly to be the exact same as Dragon Age Origins. Maybe that's because I was a mage and it's just a series of pausing as you place your AOE spells properly to hit everyone but your allies. The animations were certainly more showy, I can attest to that as you flip your staff around as you do auto attacks, but basically the same thing.

The game was designed to do a seamless transition from combat to cinematic, but unfortunately you usually get 1-2 words in before you get a small "Loading...." message which is disruptive. If the "Loading..." would happen before anything was spoken it'd be understandable, but the fact someone gets out half a sentence then you're stuck there waiting for a few seconds to resume is pretty shoddy. Certainly could have been handled better with Loading times at proper points.

Over all still more of the same game play I liked from the first game, so plan on purchasing it.

Just finished the demo... as a PC Gamer I am hurt that the combat feels 'dumbed' down for the console... liked the graphics, a little glitchy, but is is just the demo.. hopefully it'll get fine tuned... cant form much of an opinion based on the limited gameplay in the demo other than on the combat.. Not a horrible game by any means, not canceling my pre-order, but am severly disappointed in the combat... but that just my opinion

I hate the GUI. I hate it so much I want to create a new thread about it, but things get locked very easily here, so here it is:

It's amatuerish. I'm not talking just the minimalism, though that bugs me up the wall too. As someone who builds/designs interfaces for games, I have long seen no beauty in just a black screen with text on it. That is the template you must customize. I've been telling myself screenshot after screenshot that these are placeholders, but lo, the demo is out and it barely looks commercial worthy. I'm talking the sloppy glow put on everything. Those graphics took your interface designer what, a minute a piece to make? Make a black triangle and then tell Photoshop to put the default glow on it? Bam! INDICATOR ICON!

The sheer amount of glow on everything, like it was an actual design decision, makes your game look like a real indie project where one guy did everything but the guy isn't really good at graphics but he can't hire anyone who is so oh well HEY I found glow in Photoshop for the first time!!1 And the gradient bars for HP/Mana are so cartoonish and painfully clash with the rest of the interface. These are placeholders. Did you even have placeholders? Did you guys just get so used to this design you said "screw it" to updating it?

PLEASE tell me I'm not the only one who thinks that the GUI is an unpolished mess. The glow ... THE GLOW ...

i don't care about the glow but, yea, my only complain is that the UI and the menus of the PC demo look like they are taken from consonle, and i'm afraid that it will also be the way they will be in the final product :(

it seems like the consoles are forcing their 'religion' on the PCs guys :/
