 I was too tired to post my full impressions of the game last night so I'll do it now:

What I liked:
  • Graphics & Animation -   I remember people, not neccessarily fans, saying when DA:O graphics looked generic and too much like LOTR.  It was a opinion that I did not share.  I don't know if you'd call the new graphics better but they work.  More of a stylized look which I think lends itself to the 'Cartoon look' that others have noted.  The combat animations seem more fluid to me.  I know not all agree but that's what I saw.
  • Characters & Voice Acting -  Status quo.  What does that mean?  Considering it was just a peice of the pie I thought it was on par with DA:O and that's a good thing.
  • Story - While not as epic of an opening as Mass Effect 2 I thought Bioware did of hell of a job setting me up for the rest of the story!  Who the hell is Hawke?  Why is he is so important?  Champion of Kirkwall...what the hell is that and how does he earn that title?  I can't wait to play and take that journey!
What I didn't like:
  • Cutscenes - These skipped over some parts and were disjointed.  It's a demo so I'll give them a pass.
  • Combat Issues - I played as a Male mage.  The mechanics seemed inconsistent at times.  I found my self clicking on spells and nothing happening.  This usually occured when I wasn't directly facing my target.  I used to do this in DA:O: If I had an NPC targeted my character would to face him and cast the spell.  It seemed if I had to be placed a certain way.  I'm not sure if there are restrictions on spells like line of sight tied to these spells?
In all I loved the demo and cannot wait to play more.

I think....the Ogre's health is just too high...

With the streamlined and sped up combat. Running into the ogre to slowly take off tiny pieces of it's health was a bit of an Anti-'Fight like a spartan, think like a general' moment.

The rest of the combat felt good though. Real good. But just lower the Health by about 20 - 30% and I think you'd be on the money.

Considering the levels of the characters in this demo I think Bioware got it right.  Did you think you were going to take down the ogre so easily that early in the game?

It's not about taking the ogre down easily, it's about having a long, drawn out boring fight. There's no reason for him to have that much HP.

Yep, Bioware shouldn't mess with our minimal attention spans. I mean, fighting the same creature for more than a couple of seconds, HOW DARE THEY!!!!!!!

Hahahaha!

In my mage playthrough, the team did not drink their healthpotions as instructed, so I ended up alone, running around in circles for 10 min, avoiding enemies and waiting for the spellcooldowns. That was hillarious :D

God damn

:mellow:

But yeah, I'm sure it's just a demo thing. Still, 'these days, this is what is considered normal' is a momentarily chilling thought.

You are not. There are many things to criticize about DA2, but the first thing that made me cringe was the UI as well.

You cannot make a fantasy RPG and then let some graphics design student who heard one lecture on cubism too many go nuts post-modernist style on it. The overstyling freaked me out. Such UI's work for WEBSITES, not for full-fleged fantasy RPGs :(

Tell that to TES5:Skyrim. This doesn't seem more like what you think of fantasy or rpg interface... just saying :police:

I'll try my best for being just & honest against the developer that I respect most (Bioware);

- I do not like the wheel dialogue even a bit. I always enjoy reading several possible lines and try to pick one which suits my character and its history. Over time, the player gets more connected to his/her character via more dialogue choices and it provides a feeling of character development. Now my character is saying things that are far away from what I want him to say.

- The combat is a huge step back from first game. I do respect all who like more action oriented combat and I am really happy for them. But there are a lot of top class action-rpgs out there (Demon's Soul just an example) and we really did not need one more. This game is supposed to be an old-school, story-driven hardcore rpg (at least for me). Do not get me wrong, I do love Mass Effect. I just do not need another.

- Dear devs, backstabbing is an active skill. You sure about that? Really? Is there no one left who has played table top rpg ever? It is not about backstabbing particularly but more like the mentality behind skill usage. Why don't you let us try to use more strategy to overcome monsters instead button mashing? I felt myself like playing Street Fighter with Honda, just performing Hyakuretsu Harite (Hundred Hands Slap) and hoping to win the combat. I am already missing tactical combat.

- I will not even talk about combat acrobatics (including mage !). I choose to think it's EA, not Bioware, who wants it this way.

 PC Edition
Very enjoyable, glad my pc could still run it, much nicer layout so much less clutter on screen which is nice. Had a few issues with connection to bioware network initially but seemed to then start working, as long as I get the freebies :P It'll be fine!

At first glance... It looked a bit unusual, and I thought it was not cool as DAO. But after some playing, it's absolutely grate! Much better! More serious story, cooler characters, nice story! Can't wait till the realise!

I tried the demo only 10 min, but its enough for me.

First: Great job, finally, the runescape like animation is gone. No more small swing, big swing, a small spin(whirlwind) and other similar animation that almost all looked the same except with a little variation. Now its very dynamic, the battle itself is almost a cutscene.

Two: I like the new way that talent work, this remember me another game. Less talent, but better one and we can upgrade them.

Now the thing i don't like:

1: Like dragon age origin, we need to hold TAB to don't miss thing

2: No more tactical view...

In DA:O, there is no wa you could have taken out the Ogre in Ostagar with just one guy. 4 guys vs. 1 ogre - a difficult fight.

Not really. The ogre was just a walking death animation waiting to happen if you had an ability to stun, paralyze, or freeze.

Ostagar is rather early is to have such talents ... i believe?

 The top of the Tower of Ishall, to be precise.   And a standard party consisting of a Human Noble, Alistair, Dog and Generic, temporary Circle mage will have:

1) Paralyse.
2) Shield Bash
3) Shield Pummel
4) Dread Howl.

You could, with good timing, Stun-lock the Ogre, and make a quick fight out of it.   But If I recall correctly, that fight was an enormous headache the first time out for many MANY people.  It would be STUPID of Bioware to put such a frustration-inducing fight in a DEMO.  So obviously they decided not to.

Loved it. Fun to play. Its a demo though so not a lot to get from it other then the combat is more enjoyable.

Archers are much better and 2 handed warriors are fun to play again. Like it so far.

Actually, not interesting.

The description is written so as to make it appear the main game can'th have higher difficulty, and so is quite disengenuous... and the player is deliberatly trying _not_ to have fun. You can do the same in DAO as well at normal difficulty.

Never mind that 80% of the demo is the tutorial, and so is meant to be easier.

A thouroughly disengenuous video, and it is quite sad that someone actually went through the trouble of making it. What a life.

Fair enough. Basically what this vid is showing is that if you died at all in the demo than clearly you shouldn't be playing RPG's ;)

Finally got to play the demo today and I must say that it didn't, in my case at least, accomplish what demos are usually released for - convincing someone to buy the finished product. I also have to write that I still didn't play in DA:O, so my knowledge of the lore comes from Dragon Age Wikia and a little lurking on this forum yesterday.

Pros:
- I liked new character faces - or more precisely, I liked the default face for the female Hawke (male one is kind of meh);

- I like the idea behind the Varric as the unreliable narrator (at least unless it is over used to explain every over the top element).

Minor annoyances:
- the amour looks looks like it is made from paper and the feeling is only accentuated by the scene in which Hawke/Aveline mercy kills Wesley (it really broke my suspension of disbelief since, if characters have that much strength then why bother with armour at all?);

- the ridiculous amount of gore and the fact that enemies exploded when in a shower of blood when killed (hopefully there will be a mod that will make enemies die normally, since apparently the gore toggle only works on blood stains and splatter, unless I missed some other option every time an enemy died I could imagine the character say Hokuto Shin no Ken - sorry, for the anime reference, but unfortunately it wont' be the last one);

- combat animations look like they were on fast forward - it reminds me of Naruto characters on speed (sorry for another anime reference, but I can't find any other comparison). It's kind of a disappointment that due to the lack of Friendly Fire and teleport/backstab combo for rogue character placement became useless - shame, since right now it feels like the game doesn't need any kind of tactic at all - during my playthrough with a mage I simply nuked everything; with an archer I never did anything beside selecting targets and occasionally backflip to safety when surrounded. Couldn't finish my playthrough with the warrior since after meeting with Aveline the cursor got stuck - maybe I'll try later.

- the prologue area felt extremely claustrophobic - the tiny corridor my characters were led through, felt really small and looked like Mars not a place were humans could try to live there or try to farm (even if the darkspawn destroy the environment through their very presence, I remember seeing videos from the Return to Ostagar that featured an entire forest with grass and some shrubbery - maybe there is some variable that I don't know... ../../../images/forum/emoticons/unsure.png).

- the voice acting is a little weird, especially femHawke, who apparently has multiple personalities corresponding to each type of response (it never felt like the same character who at this moment is angry/sincere or whatever the individual responses are supposed to represent - it's like the character that is on the driving seat is constantly changing and it is a little off-putting).

Didn't like at all
- running animations for female Hawke is simply horrible (is her spine made from plasticine or something) - after a minute or so I always changed to Carver when running because I couldn't stand seeing the main character any more;

- enemies spawning in waves - it never felt like a real situation since everything felt like some kind of a gauntlet and combat quickly became a chore;

- the scene in which the sibling gets killed reeked of meta gaming to me since who dies is entirely chosen by the fact what class Hawke is - I remember reading previews that mentioned that the person who dies is motivated by player's choices in the Prologue. I don't know who to blame: translation of the article (sorry, for all mistakes by the way - I'm a Pole and English is not my strong suite) or cuts that such short production cycle surely had;

- enormous weapons look really stupid especially when characters wing them like they are made from Styrofoam - it gets a facepalm worthy when what the setting calls daggers could be easily treated as a short sword anywhere else - two handed swords and the axe one of the enemies in the second part are simply ridiculous;

- enemy design is extremely silly and the darkspawn aren't terrifying at all (they should be, right?) - I almost expected to see Rita and Power Rangers to jump out of every crevice - even if they looked a lot like Tolkien's orcs in the first game the change is at least strange especially when it feels like you fight an army of clones - hopefully someone will mod a full body armour with helmets for them since the spikes are really silly, but why the design change for Ogres, or should I call them Trolls now, since they actually became more like trolls from Jackson's trilogy (looking at screens of ogres from both games side by side, one of the is actually terrifying and the second one makes me giggle).

- since I only played the demo, I can't really judge the character entirely, but Isabela looks like she just got out of a porn movie set - I understand that, especially teenage, players like extremely well-endowed female characters but she looks simply ridiculous. Also, she didn't earn any points when she threw her weapon to kill a mook during her side-quest (who throws their weapon when their fighting style relies on having two daggers *sigh*) - at least it's good that she can teleport and is not an obligatory companion.

All in all, the demo made me extremely apprehensive about the franchise - I was going to buy the first game and see if I could finish the game before the release date of the second, but right now I'm not really sure if I want to - will have to wait for reviews of the full game, I guess. Shame, since lore-wise Thedas is one of the more interesting settings of  last few years.

Well, after actually getting through the demo (which ended strangely regarding the relic chat with Isabela), I have to say the graphics are nice looking, especially the structures and surrounding enviroments. The character models are nice, but the facial animations, disappointingly, are non-existent. I mean, almost no emotion when Aveline lost her husband, just the emotional voice. At least the character's facial animations in Origins were pretty good, but outside of the polished lip synch and mouth movements in this demo, it isn't much to be desired. Also, does anyone get the feel in the cutscenes with the character faces, that they almost look like the characters in The Witcher? The outfits are outstanding looking, just the faces look weak without the expressions. The darkspawn don't look as scary as they did in Origins and the face on the Ogre looks like The Predator (but no Arnold came by).

Also, some of the cutscenes seem to skip a frame or two, as if missing the frame or two, not a hiccup with the video processing, I hope this isn't in the final release of the game. The combat, while fun, is screwy, as many times when attacking an enemy from afar, it is hard to tell that I clicked on a henchman instead of an enemy for my target of attack, and wind up being in their place losing what I wanted to do in the attack with my mage; frustrating really. Is there a way to lock the character so this doesn't happen?

For now, and as excited as I was for DA2 considering how I loved Origins (the best overall RPG I have ever experienced), I am on hold status, willing to give up my bonus content if the game isn't picked up within the first few days, until I see the reviews and what a few of my friends think. I am not dropping $60 to find myself putting it down after a day of playing it. I am conscerned for the length of the game as well. This demo was nearly 2gig in size and I got through it playing all the way listening to evrything in a bout an hour. The game install is only 7gigs.

I just finished the Dragon Age 2 demo and it seems that the amounts of pros outweigh the amount of cons. Here is a list of them:

+ Option to automatically login on BioWare Social Network.
+ Loading looks quicker.
+ Combat feels more fluent and faster paced.
+ Removed the necessity of using 4-5 quick bar slots for one type of potion by creating a button to automatically drink that type of potion.
+ Addition of a system similar to the paragon/renegade system of Mass Effect.
+ Added a experience bar near the quick slot.
+ Addition of the wheel dialogue system, with icones to make it easier to understand what is the type of action that you are taking.
+ Removed the option to resize your quick slot bar. Instead, made the entire bar accessible, automatically changing the size based on your monitor's resolution. (I have a 24" monitor and this change was great)
+ Voiced main character. I know that a lot of people are unsatisfied with this, since the developers had to take off the option to customize your race, but hearing your main character talking makes the game feel much more realistic and "alive".
+ The skill tree looks much better. The icons are simpler and easier to recognize.
+ Option to loot using R, making the looting system faster and less annoying.
- No option to play in windowed mode without border. (This option also isn't available for Dragon Age 1, but was added in Mass Effect 2)
- Low volume? I have a pretty good headphone (Icemat Siberia), but for some reason the volume in the demo was quite low. I checked my audio settings, but everything seemed normal.

huge thread. overall, amazing game so far. the phrase "when you push a button, something awesome happens" was not an understatement. love playing as a mage already.

tho, something i don't like is the 'timer' on the health poultices. i'm a seasoned DA veteran, and i died on the freaking demo! and, even tho the basics of the radial menu layout and whatnot is the same as DAO, it's really REALLY mass effect-y. i liked the DAO look better.

WHY ARE THE DARKSPAWN REDISGNED SO MUCH? they looked better before! how can you be scared of them when they're coming at you with a goofy ass run?

overall, nice job so far bioware. PS3 version lookin good

the combat was a bit confusing at the begining, but after 2 playthroughs i can say that i really enjoyed it.

character models are looking good, nice improvement since DA:O. the environemnt in the prologue was a bit monotone and the women have very big breasts.

can't wait till march...i really liked the demo

 Just played through as a female rogue (going with the archery talents) on the PC. Probably not going to say anything that hasn't already been said, but here's my opinion for what it's worth, along with apologies for the wall o'text:

Specs (in case they're of any relevance) :
i7 975 EE processor
2x 295 GTX 1 gig
12 gig RAM (DDR3)
Windows 7 Premium 64 bit
Running Directx11, though a 295 is only a Directx10 capable card, I think.

Visuals

Character models - Faces are great. I was surprised at how well they registered even small expressions, such as a smirk. When Wesley died, the look on Flemeth's face  as she appeared to almost sympathise with Aveline, was just Fantastic. But all the characters (Flemeth in particular) look like they're wearing waaaaaaaay too much hairspray. A tad static in the barnet department. LadyHawke is lovely, I really enjoy making faces and custom characters but she really tempts me to play the default. I also like the way she runs, I find it less jarring than in Origins, I always thought my Warden moved a bit like a bloke.

Love some of the new effects. the hail of arrows graphic is great fun especially. Bethany's fireballs also looked nice, nicer than in Origins, I thought. Textures etc don't seem to be different from DA:O, (this isn't a problem for me since I liked them well enough then) although I did like the golden statues in the area where we fought Hayden - they had a nice metallic sheen to them. Graphics in general seem a little sharper overall, without being drastically different.

The new art direction is interesting. Can't say I liked it more than Origins, but it wasn't horrendous by any means, and was certainly distinctive. Darkspawn seem a little more alien looking, which I liked. Blight-ravaged Lothering outskirts (or wherever we were) really was barren, wasn't it? Personally, I prefer environments to be a little less sparse - remains of houses dotted about (rather than just what appeared to be the occasional tower and a stray corpse or two), a gutted shop or merchant caravan with a few bits and bobs to loot, the site of a small battle where a group of refugees fell prey to a bunch of darkspawn, but maybe took one or two down with them. In my opinion (obviously), these things would add more to visual storytelling (from a 'human tragedy' perspective) than a totally desolate landscape, and would maybe have provided a more emotive set-up for the death of the Hawke sibling.

Audio

Music and environmental sounds both good. Intro music as lovely as it was last time, but then I'm a sucker for that kind of voice.

Thought the voicework was excellent. Kate Mulgrew stands out (as always), also thought the woman voicing Isabela was marvellous, more nuanced than I was expecting.  LadyHawke herself was easy on the ear, and neutral enough to be unobtrusive, which I think is a great thing for a voiced protagonist. One thing that gets me bizarrely annoyed is actors who place the wrong emphasis on words within a sentence, especially when they're responding to someone else. Jo Wyatt (right?) got it spot on - now if she can just do that for the rest of the game, I'll be happy.

Story

Such as it was for a demo, anyway.  The somewhat clipped response to Carver's death kind of made sense to me. The fact that their grieving was left unfinished added a greater sense of urgency, especially in LadyHawke's response; I would, however have liked to see something a bit more extreme from Bethany (they were twins, weren't they? Must have been close). Wesley's death seemed to have more 'punch', though I suppose they had the luxury of a powerful shapshifter watching over them at the time. I hope that there is more reaction to Carver's death after the family reaches Kirkwall.

Gameplay

Great. I'm currently running through Origins as a dual-wielding warrior (still a short way into the game) and have been dismayed to find that its pretty much identical to a dual-wielding rogue, just with better armour and no lock-picking. Not anymore. I adore jumping nimbly around and darting in for a bit of a stab then rolling away (though Varric looks hilarious doing a barrel-roll!), while Carver and Aveline swing about more slowly. Rogues are now made entirely of cool.  Mages seem able to handle themselves a lot better at close quarters, as well as having some good spells. I remember groaning inwardly when the statement was made that 'when you press a button, awesome happens'.  But actually, that's not too far from the truth. Combat responses are much more immediate and fluent, but I can still do my thing where I pause and rearrange my people and order them about and so on.

Issues

No crashes, small amount of lag in cutscenes, and even though Carver died, it was he who appeared in the first Kirkwall cutscene. Couldn't choose Directx10 in the graphics drop-down menu, only 11 or 9. Will this be different in the actual game?

I admit, I was already looking forward to this game, so Bio's preaching to the converted. But the gameplay is more fun than I was expecting, and my (few) concerns are diminishing. Think it's safe to say I'll be buying the full game.

Jeez, if anyone actually bothered to read that gigantuous bit of wordage I am both impressed and grateful :blush:

classes: Female rouge and half-way through with a male mage (Had to put it away early because of work.)

I loved it! I was a little disappointed of the fact that we've seen most of the stuff in the demo already, but that's my fault for greedily grabbing and reading/watching anything to do with DAII that I spoiled it for myself. Ah well.

I LOVED the Flemeth scene. I was playing the demo with my boyfriend in the room and during the scene when she's walking through the fire, hair blowing in the wind while dragging a dead darkspawn, my boyfriend commented that she, "reminded him of Gandolf." Trust me, from him that's a compliment. Flemeth was just so B.A and I was sooo happy to hear the original V.A. Of course, I already knew she was returning, but still it was great to hear! Loved her (Somewhat) mention of Morrigan and the Wardens. I "squeed" when the last remaining Wardens were mentioned.

The combat was amazing RIGHT off the bat. I loved the rouge's speed and dexterity, flipping around in combat. Admittedly it was a little difficult to keep up, but that's probably because I'm not used to it. And the mage.... the mage was just SO much fun to play. Totally digging the new animation. Before, I ALWAYS played as a rouge first play through. Now I'm totally torn.

Although, to throw in a little negativity to this critique, I'm still not digging the new darkspawn look. When I first saw that Hurlock in that Ostagar cutscene roaring, it totally freaked me out because it looked undead. I have a major fear of anything pertaining to zombies, so that Hurlock totally gave me chills. They have those creepy smiles, rotting and gross looking flesh. They truly look repulsive and festering with taint. These new guys just look... well kind of silly. Was one of them wearing a hat? And where or where were the cannon fodder genlocks? Are they gone?

So, aside from the new darkspawn look I'm totally digging the demo and plan to play it a lot more. Can't wait for DAII :)

For what its worth, here's my feedback on the demo, apologies, its not a response to the interestng things on this thread but my initial feelings about the demo.

Firstly thank you, Bioware it's nice to have a decent size demo to give a taster of the full game. I was not a big fan of lots of smallish but costly add-on DLCs which I found to be a hassle on DA:O, but having said that, I was (still am!) a great fan of DA:O, and this sequel looks impressive on the whole.

I liked the feel of the graphics, to me they had a sort of comic book feel (in a good way) giving a freshness clarity and vibrancy to all the action. Flemeth was simply outstanding and I hope there is alot more of her in the game she positively sizzled and crackled away, just what you want in a scary witch (but adding in her fabled attractiveness this time). On the other hand, for me, most of the other characters (including female Hawke) were a bit too well fed and well groomed looking, but it depends how dark and gritty you like these things to be. Oddly, I found the Ogres and darkspawn a bit less impressive/scary than before.

I liked the action, although in a different rather than better way than before as I prefer more tactical battles. The level-up abilities seemed simpler, more informative and transparent than previously (it was often difficult to tell what some things actually did).

With the dialogue, it depends what you like whether this demo shows an improvement - its easier in that you pick a type of response and you listen to your character's interpretation of that, which was often good. However, I'd reserve judgement until seeing more of it. For me, I didn't mind my warden not speaking in DA:O, since I said/read it in my head, it was MY voice, but now there is  the potential for the given voice or accent to grate somewhat, or not, as the case may be.

Finally  though, for me the real test will be in the main npcs - DA:O stood out for me for the depth of characterization, and their interaction within the group and with the main character. I felt this was lacking in Awakenings, and would be impossible to show in a demo, but I remain hopeful. All in all, I'll definitely be playing this game; will it be fun? yes. Will I like it as much as DA:O? still not certain!

For me the demo was exactly what it was meant to be, the bell that makes Pavlos(sp) dog slobber. A tiny nibble of a great meal given to a hungry person. As to the negative? Took six hours to download and less than a half hour to play lol. Worth it to me because I am buying it anyway. Only wished I could have played with the character creator, bummer, to see all the crazy things a person can do with it. Male Hawke's beard is too brisslely for me, Duncan's was better. Guess that is just my opinion. Fem Hawke I liked except her eyes were either too blue or too big (can't decide which) they didn't look natural to me. Little things that do not distract from the game or the demo in anyway. I just like playing with the cc

Interesting video. I really hope this is just scripting in the demo to get us through it quicker and not like this in the actual game.

Itkovian

Fair enough. Basically what this vid is showing is that if you died at all in the demo than clearly you shouldn't be playing RPG's ;)

No, it's merely being disengenuous, as Itkovian said. It's only showing the exaggerated portion of the game. You are not meant to die during that part. Varric is blowing your trumpet for you, recounting the legend, beefing things up -- it's meant to be the 'holy **** I'm a bamf who can't die' segment. What is interesting is that the video cuts off once you get to the part with the real gameplay.

 Love the demo. Sure it does have the ME2 touch to it but that is not a bad thing... :police::?
  • Plus :wub:
  • The graphic is a HUGE improvement over DOA.
  • The protagonist is speaking this time (thank you very much).
  • Combat is more fun.
  • Minus <_<
  • The female running animation looks weird.
  • A few graphic glitches
This is both the PC and consol versions :wizard:

another 3 playthroughs more (PC) and mainly

3 bad things:

- conversation wheel breaks any rpg experience with good/humor/evil simplification.

- eliminating zoom out or isometrical view is a major degrade for tactical purposes.

- too much fast tempo combat for a tactical rpg, is an action rpg :(, i'm sure there is a better middle point between DAO slow tempo and DA2 superfast tempo.
