2. While I think the dialogue wheel is cool, the tone difference between sarcastic Hawke and aggressive Hawke caught me by surprise. I found that if I want to be douchey, sarcastic Hawke is actually the way to go.

This actually did bother me a little. In ME1 and 2, I can pick a paragon option followed by a renegade option followed by the middle option and it sounds coherent. In this demo, the change in tone was jarring sometimes, almost like 2 different people were talking. Makes me feel like I have to stick to a style. Maybe Ladyhawke is better.

I noticed that too. The goofy appearence combined with the bad voice acting made me decide against playing a male Hawke. Luckily, Ladyhawke is better. But I may still feel the need to stick with one sort of response to keep in character. Sad if that's the case.

Played the demo yesterday, the combat was nice and fun, though an auto attack toggle would be helpful for the fingers. The rogue and mage were especially enjoyable with their hit and run style and utility.Unfortunately I just couldn't get behind the 2-h warrior as the gameplay there seemed similar many action rpg's with the standard moveset of whirlwind, slam, taunt and charge attacks (as well as comically oversized swords). Maybe I'm just suffering warrior fatigue, but I hope that a higher level warrior will be more interesting to play as they learn more skills. Overall though I do enjoy the changes in combat, it seems faster paced and frantic, yet not overly chaotic and mindless.

The major criticism I do have with the demo is the way the escape from Lothering was presented. I thought the city of Kirkwall was very aesthetically pleasing, but the fact that the outskirts of Lothering suddenly became a Morder like wasteland seems ridiculous. The taint did not seem to affect the darkspawn infested Kokari Wilds in such a way, so why is the Lothering countryside suddenly ash? Maybe Flemeth's dragon fire got out of hand? I would have preferred a more rural countryside like atmosphere, with screaming refugees and all that.

Also an origins like prologue with the Hawke family preparing to leave Lothering would have given more emotional impact to the death of the sibling, as my reaction Bethany's death was "Hmm interesting, I guess Carver isn't doomed to die like I thought. Thats good!". Like many the death of the templar registered more than the sibling death, which I don't really mind, but I don't think thats what Bioware was going for.

True, warrior does have a bit more options. Mages and rogues, however, remain two attribute wonders. Doesn't leave much to the imagination.

I like the combat that I experienced in the demo compared to DA:O and Awakening. The movement felt lighter, and the fact that I could move at ALL during combat was a plus (I didn't like Origin's 'click and move' style, wasn't a fan of the combat) and even though I played a warrior and walked a little hunch over it wasn't the same encumbersome swings. Don't get me wrong, it is obviously more realistic that a two-handed sword would be harder to swing and take time, but let's face it; no one wants to play a character and feel like they're swinging around a tree trunk.

I've only played the games on console, and I know that BioWare had some discrepancies transitioning from PC to console. Origin's and Awakening's clunky combat style was pretty much the only complaint I had about the games, and now that that's out the door I'm much more content.

Also, it's a demo. Did you honestly expect to form an instant and deep connection with characters that you had JUST met? Demo are DEMOSTRATIONS - in the words of Darth Malak "This is but a taste of the dark side to whet your appetite..."

Or light. It's cool with me whatever morality you're for.

So far, I won't lie. Bioware has managed to stun and impress me with the demo so far.

I played the demo on a PS3 and a PC. The console version feels a lot better now, it isn't as awkward to use as it was in DA:O. The PC version feels as great as always and was even better now that the battle system has been polished up. The awkward shuffling is gone, battle movements seem a lot more natural now, flowing and strong. I am really impressed with how well and quickly characters respond to commands now and the new branching of skills is impressive too and a nice way to avoid spells/skills that we KNOW we won't be using, unlike wasting them like we had to in DA:O.

The warrior and rogue class especially benefitted from the change I feel, my tanks move a lot quicker on the battle field now, dealing more damage to more enemies than they did on Origins and my rogues feel more like rogues, fast hitters that are quick to slip into darkness to take the kill as opposed to having to manually shift behind enemies to backstab. Mage class also responds a lot quicker to spells are the fact they have a lot better chance of defending themselves if enemies come in close is also a great feature (I am refering to the blades at the end of their staves).

My companions are great too. I adore Aveline so far and I am only disappointed she isn't romancable for the male character. Carver annoys the hell outta me, but I just wanna hug Bethany. And Varric... I can see why he has the fangirls, even if I'm not one of them.  Isabella is great to see too, her character is quite... zazzy. I admit, it worried me greatly when Bioware announced that three of our new companions would just be from Origins/Awakening, but I can't make final judgements until I've seen more of Anders and Merril.

Storyline wise, it is refershing, becoming the champion not because you had to be, not because the world was in danger, but simply by chance, by skill, by fate.

Flemmeth... she still feels like Flemmeth and yet she doesn't, she shows more sympathy than I remember, she reminds me vaguely of Varric in her role, in her watching of the growing champion...

There's also a pang... of betrayl in me. I knew my Warden would never stay forever, but somehow, I can't help but feel a tad cheated as if everything she had done meant nothing. That, unlike a lot of us though, she no longer feels like the mirror image of Shepard. The fact that Hawke has been described as 'a symbol, a champion, the single most important person in all of Thedas', makes me feel as if my Warden has been replaced, as if Origins was nothing more then the cheap beta of a game series that would mirror and rival Mass Effect, starring Hawke. The simple fact that talk of a DA3 is being played up already despite DA2 not even being released yet, only makes the feeling worse. I won't make final judgements until DA3 has been confirmed and until AFTER I've played through DA2, and see just how much my Warden did play a part in Thedas and maybe even Hawke's destiny.

Overall, I almost feel the $90 I payed for Signature Edition and the extra weeks I will have to wait for it's release in Australia will be worth it. I'm looking forward to the game, regardless if I change my mind about the $90, and I can tell Bioware worked hard.

I'm dissappointed. Combat is dull and no tactics required, the enemy AI is dumb and the mage and archer overpowered. Everyone is using lightsabers with supersonic speed. I wonder why they aren't floating though, i mean there is no gravity or any other physics.

And the story beggining is dull too. They're supposed to be running away, yet there's little urgency in their speech since the animations are pretty static and don't convey much of anything.

I hate the forced choice of sibling death where you're only input is your character class. So i hate Carver and i want to play as a Mage, so Carver so die if someone has to die for no apparent reason. But noooo, we choose because we can't balance classes and two mages at once are too powerful and make the game easier than it already is.

Thank go i'm getting this very cheap.

Oh yes, one problme I DID have with the demo, was that the Tactics GUI Was _extremely_ buggy.

It was very hard to select anything, and it usually took several tries. I certainly hope that was polished and fixed in the release version.

Mind you, it's not a deal breaker as I persevered with it and it worked... but it certainly is a pain to use in this buggy state.

You know, I noticed this too.  I do think it's a demo thing rather than how the actual game is going to look.  At least, I hope it is.

Another thing I want to comment on is how I'm not too impressed with the UI.  The UI looks much more like a sci-fi game than it does a medieval fantasy.  I'm not digging it too much.  Ah well.

i finally got it to work..

im not entirely fond of the combat.. i dont think it belongs in dragon age

the story so far was pretty good

i still dont like the fact that you cant choose between bethany and carver (thought theres nothing that can be done about that now..) i was really looking forward to my mage and my mage sister taking on the chantry.. i wont even use carver..

over all.. i really hope this isnt the direction youre going with all of dragon age.. its fine in games like mass effect.. but in dragon age it just doesnt fit.. games like dragon age should have the combat left alone (maybe tweaked a little to fix some issues [shuffling]) and the story expanded to last many many hours. dragon age: origins was one of my favorite games of all time.. the only reason im still getting DAII now is because it releases just before my birthday, so i get it for free..

i hate saying that, but its true.. i really dont want a shorter more action oriented game, i want a long wonderful story with lots of ways i can change it.. if this story is like mass effects, in that it is very linear (go here, do one thing you have no choice in, leave, go there, repeat) then i probably wont finish it

i realize the game wasnt meant for me, and its not my choice where the direction of it goes, but still, this is a feedback thread, thats my feedback.

i really hate saying that, as you guys are no doubt my favorite game company, but it just really disappointed me, unfortunately :(

Let's start with the good stuff.

Flemeth. Love her new looks and Mulgrew really nails it. She was without a doubt the highlight of this demo for me. I'd also like to compliment BioWare on the new spell effects and animations. A much needed improvement. Yeah, the staff twirling isn't perfect but it's far superior to the old animations. I was skeptical but I rather like the new visual look.

Now for the bad stuff.

Let's start with the Mass Effect inspired dialogue system. What were you guys thinking here? It's absolutely awful and I'm not just talking about the paraphrasing which is pretty bad in itself. I'm talking about being forced to play as a walking caricature and how our characters will go off on tangents without us being involved. This is exactly what I feared it would be and I can't say I'm happy about it.

The paragon options makes you come off as an insufferable sycophant. The in-between options makes you come off as a douchebag. The renegade options are the worst by far as they make you come off as a sulky eight year old. It's shockingly immature in both tone and performance and I'm saying this as someone who typically enjoys playing menacing characters. There is no winning with this system and I absolutely loathe it.

Next up let's talk about the wave mechanics. I recall this being done in the console versions of Dragon Age: Origins as they weren't properly optimized and couldn't handle quite as many units. Why are we stuck with this mechanic on the PC now? I for one loved the massive battles in Origins and seeing every single encounter broken up into waves is incredibly disheartening. Are there any massive battles left in Dragon Age II or are they all wave based now?

Last but not least I'd like to talk about the lack of an isometric camera. I didn't expect it to be that big of a deal but it really is. Every single time I clicked my little fireball icon I felt the need to switch to isometric. Not being able to do so just felt wrong. It made my whole mage experience feel clunky and unnecessarily fidgety. Reconsider isometric for Dragon Age III, please. It really is a big deal. At least for me.

From what I could tell Dragon Age II isn't a bad game. It just isn't a great game either. It's stuck somewhere in the middle with some poor design decisions preventing it from being great.

Console players won... that is that!

We (the PC gamers) got DA:O and its DLC's... console players freaked out when they saw the PC version of it. EA/Bioware were also affraid of losing that part of the market, so they hurried up with this... hmmm, let's call it a sequel in lack of a better word. Now you know why this s... s... sequel was made so fast after DA:O.

Today, we are the ones freaking out... "DA2: Hack&Slash Effect" is a game for the consoles, even saw a couple of posts where PC gamers ask if this can be played with a gamepad, we simply lost a great game to a growing trend in the gaming industry that's going on for the past couple of years and it's called...?

What?! I'll help you, starts with "D"...

Let me guess.  Different.  Just because something is different does not mean it was done to
simplify it.  they wanted a more cinematic game.  First game was really stiff.  Camera was static.
All you ever had were one sided conversations because your character did not talk.  I could go and say the first game was dumbed down because of this, but I don't.  It was just different.

Except rogues  can  pump their magic attribute now and   get good spell resistance to go along with their   good  melee defense.  I suspect in a few months when the power gaming min-max crowd comes out to play, we'll be seeing BHuild advice on how to make  your rogue unhittable in combat, and uneffected by enemy spells.

I have run through the demo with mage, 2h warrior, archery rogue and dw rogue. dw rogue seems to be sub-par in exciting gameplay.
First with mage. For my mage I chose healing along with the ice spell on my first run. The heal spell had such a slow refresh that it was almost useless. I found I was able to use it only once per battle. The first ice spell was also underpowered as it only hit one target at a time. I can appreciate that mages are designed to do massive aoe damage to clear out mobs. That is what my second mage run much more enjoyable.
My second mage run I put all skill points into fire spells. The aoe damage and momentary stun with fireball made it a very useful spell. In fact, it was the only spell I would use pre-Kirkwall, for damage. The mind blast spell was useful as a de-aggro ability( I did appreciate how rogues and mages both get a de-aggro ability early on.) though the lack of damage made it not as useful as fireball.
This gets into my  problem with the mage class as current. NPCs have difficulty targeting groups of mobs with their magic spells. Bethany, by default, has a tactic that triggers fireball when 3 mobs are clustered together. In the beginning fights those mobs are usually running towards the heroes. Bethany will usually fire the fireball as soon as the cluster spawns on the map. The mobs will always run towards the party and dodge the fireball. I eventually disabled her tactics and micro-managed her spells. This makes party mages inconvenient as they must be micro-managed in order to effectivly use their aoe abilities.
2h warrior played very similarly to DA:O warriors only with more aoe. Very enjoyable to use in combat and easy to manage via tactics. Something I appreciate is the effectivness of tactics to automate a class. I did not have any problems with 2h warrior and he seemed to work as intended.
Archery rogues, I enjoy them both genuinely and ironicly. Archery rogues in DA2 corrected an issue with Origins where archery was underpowered. Now rogues can pick out dangerous targets from a distance and drop their health with their very effective damage abilities. In battles my two warriors would take up the aggro on the front line, Bethany would provide aoe damage and my archery rogue would drop low health or dangerous targets at will. Very exciting and fun. The irony of the enjoyment is the over-the-top death animations from archery abilities. I noticed that when mobs were killed with pinning shot the top half of their body would explode. When I saw this I laughed out loud. Even Mass Effect 2 with rocket launchers and automatic weapons did not do that much damage to a humanoid body as a regular arrow does in DA2. I understand this is supposed to be somewhat over-the-top to provide visceral entertainment, but just thinking about a single arrow causing a torso to explode makes me laugh every time I see it. I can not take archery rogues seriously and it somewhat breaks the immersivness of the game. But it is still funny to watch.
Finally, dw rogues. Rogues are designed to take down single targets with high damage. I can appreciate that and even enjoy that role when using archery. But dw rogues seem lacking in damage and survivability. Backstab is a very nice damage ability, no arguing that. But when compared to archery rogues, dw rogues do not seem to have much in the damage department. Perhaps it is not so much that dw rogues do a lack of damage, but archery rogues are able to put so much damage out.
The survivability problem comes with archery rogues are able to attack from a distance and knows several moments before contact that he has gained aggro and can adjust accordingly. With dw rogues they are in the thick of combat and it seems easier to gain aggro and start taking too much damage. I was able to fix this problem by walking to a spawm area, then have the dw rogue sit there while the warriors gained aggro. Only then would my rogue join the battle. This period of inactivity kills the enjoyment of playing a dw rogue. With archery, one can open fire immediatly and the mob that moves towards the rogue will die before he gets there. On almost every level archery rogues out-shine dw rogues and makes me ask why I would every play one.

Briliant! I thought the demo was awesome too. However I have a, well, concern rather than a complaint.  I found the demo a little unpolished as others have said and a bit buggy.  I loved DA:O but was very dissapointed with some of the dlc. I hope the finished game is much more polished with less bugs.  Finally, the art style is different. I hope that after an hour or twoit becomes more pleasing.....

On the PS3 I got my butt handed to me by the Ogre and then I moved to the PC. The characters were too busy with their fancy schmancy combat moves to drink their health potions. I kept clicking on the potions, but they wouldn't stop to drink them.

The potion situation wasn't AS bad on the PC. I managed to make it though the battle & finish the demo.

I had that issue on PC, I should have kicked the ogres butt, but they refused to drink potions so died and I had to repeat it 5 times.

This. I think this was my problem in the Ogre battle. I kept clicking on the potions and just assumed they would follow my orders. They did sometimes. Not enough to stay alive. I think there was a cooldown on the potions, but I couldn't tell. I got it in one fight, but I had to do a lot of running to stay alive. Thankfully Aveline took a lot of the Ogre's health out before she died.

Yeah there was a cooldown on potions. Seemed to be a cool down per member of like 20 seconds or so. The health potion icon was a brighter red when off cooldown, and darker when on cooldown. Plus, just look at your group member area on the UI, under the health/mana/stamina bars it shows what action they will perform next.

Ah, thanks. I'll have to go through it again anyway because I didn't have enough time to finish it, but that will help.

I think Bioware did a great job of optimizing this game so that everyone can enjoy it. The consoles have the medium graphic setting and run's smoothly unlike DA:O which played like crap on my 360.

If the graphics of the demo look this good on the MEDIUM setting I'm pretty stoked to see what it will look like of VERY HIGH. I went back on my PC and put DA:O on MEDIUM graphics and it looks like horse dung compared to DA2.

I can't wait to see this game with full DX11, support, VERY HIGH graphical setting, and motion blur.

All in all, for me, DA2 > DAO. ESPECIALLY on consoles.

People trying to compare this thing to The Witcher 2 have to understand that to have graphics like that... you need a high end system. Even TESV is going to need a high end system to pull the graphics seen in screen shots. Bioware is looking to make money and I don't blame them. Why make a game that only a handful of computers can run and that is optimized poorly for consoles? It's stupid from a business stand point.

People who think TESV and The Witcher 2 are going to run at 60fps and look like what's been shown in screenshots are going to be in for a big surprise when they play it on a low end comp or on consoles.

Bioware is limited the everything to Medium settings so that the majority of the people who buy this game (360 and PS3 users) won't feel cheated by PC driven "bullshots" when they play the demo or the actual game.

Ok, so I tried the demo again this morning.  I couldn't finish it last night because it was so awful.  Not much better this morning.  I was able to work with the tactics better and so I lived more and my crew did more attacking and less standing around.

Again, I can't seem to get into the graphics.  When in battle mode, the little red bars on everyones head are to big, and bunch up and become one big blob.  I can't see who or what I am fighting.

Fighting.  sheesh, mostly just hack away like cutting cane while something cools down, and watch the red blob bars slowly try to inch down.  Since the demo was set at normal without option for easy setting, maybe this will change when I get my game.  (which I have preordered and paid for already along with the guide book: is it to late to get my money back?)  Hopefully on easy I won't wear out my x button.  So tedious.

Back to graphics.  I found it difficult to make out what is going on while fighting.  The color contrasts are so bad that enemies and friends seem to fade into the background.  I thought maybe they had cloaking devices!  I play on a 42 inch LED HDTV  flatscreen set to dynamic color for gaming.  It works just fine for DAO, Awakenings and ME2 as well as GT5 and Madden.  So why DA2 suddenly looks like red and black blobs flying around the screen is beyond me.

I do like the cutscenes mostly.

I didn't care for the music in the demo.  And I looooovvvved the music in DAO!  it's one reason I keep playing it!

I didn't like the new look of the portraits and talent trees.  Putting them on the wheel thingy is cool tho.  Neat.
I miss the circle portrait instead of the sqaure.  DAO , to me, had a certain elegance about it.  DA2 looks hoaky and amatuerish. But astetics aside, I can play an ugly game if its good, and so far with DA2, I'm not digging it.

I also miss the old look of the darkspawn.  But I guess thats just game evolution.

Mixed feelings about the paragon/renegade talking PC.  I like the talking PC!  I enjoy it immensely in ME2.  For me, it makes a more believable gaming experience, even though I get confused about why some things are "paragon" and others "renegade"  So far, the voice acting seems in the middle for me.  Some seems good and other parts feel disjointed.  Hopefully in the full version of the game, things will make more sense.

I did like some of the new talents.  Swooshing with my sword and blasting darkspawn had a couple fun moments!  To bad those moments are far and few between cooldowns, where I sit and hack like a dang fool.  I mean really, I found myself just sitting there, pressing x,x,x,x,x,x,x,x,x.....rolling my eyes, sighing, and praying for the end...lol!

I am willing to give the game another shot, mostly since I have already given my money to bioware.  No way I am playing that demo again.

So far, I am still terribaly disenchanted with DA2 demo.  Hopefully the game will be better.

My impressions, kind of in order and from what I remember:

-Cinematic opening with dark room. Ooooh, all Hollywood now. "EA presents" a "Bioware production". Boooooring.

-Dramatically over the top stabbing of a book. Boring. -.-

-Cryptic dialogue for "drama". Snore....

-Start playing. Oh, this feels pretty...oh my god. You can't be serious. That can't be a hurlock. Please don't tell me that's the design you're going with. Please tell me this is a joke on the side of your art department! If not then they should all be ****ing fired.

Alright rogue combat...why can't I access my inventory...tactics menu is busted...very consolised interface although not tooo big of a deal...talents recharge WAY too fast...far too easy to kill enemies...graphics are terrible (on medium)...lothering's environment seems kind of weird, looks like one of mass effect's desert planets...magic seems kind of meh....attacks have no weight to them...attacks are FAR too quick and just look ****ing stupid at the speed they're going....attacks do too much damage...I wanted more damage in the first game to make the combat more engaging but this is going way too far...tough enemies take too long to die and there's no threat because they don't do much damage (compare DA2 first ogre battle to original ogre battle).

-"Okay I'll tell you the real story" ffffffffffuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu whattttttttttttttt

-"Keep running" *party turns and slaughters attackers". Why were you running in the first place?!?!?!

-Improved looting system...yay I can finally use archery...what the **** is up with the gore?!?!...attacked from behind when I couldn't see the enemies, not that it mattered since they do so little damage...

Side note: Darkspawn were ****ing fierce in DA:O. They weren't like little rats that overwhelm you, they were an almost unstoppable force that had a frightening presence. The new hurlocks look like REJECTS from the first DA, same for the ogres.

..."badass" Hawke stare at Templar for no reason other than to be MANLY...I hate this clumsy wheel....skills on skill bar are way too small...what's with the quick heal button and quick...stamina button? Stamina is meant to be a resource that is carefully controlled during combat, you can't just drink a potion, although it doesn't change much since you have more stamina than you possibly know what to do with...it would help to be able to change the difficulty...wait....flemeth decides to help these guys because...they took down an ogre? And she's wearing armour? She has horns??! She wants something delivered to the Dalish?! Why?!!? She decides to turn into a dragon now?!?! Hey, the point of Flemeth was that she was a witch in hiding who used specific people to her own ends ocassionally, but mostly stayed in hiding, gathering power constantly. However, she always seems like an old lady and the dragon is a huge WTF moment that makes you aware of her power at the MIDDLE-END of the first game, not the beginning! It's like episode 3 when they have the emperor's throne on Grievous' ship. It just doesn't make any god damn sense. Actually, that's a nice comparison if I do say so myself, particularily because Flemeth's real strength lies in manipulation, not sheer power.

-Next cutscenes are a GIANT WTF that I couldn't follow. I then just turned it off.

Conclusion: Alright I guess, but a step backward and the story seems unecessary and retarded. Combat has a nice feel but needs FAR more powerful enemies to make it effective, not just swarming the player with enemies. However, the city seemed to have better art direction than the first game, although less realistic.

Also, Hawke, although he has better voice acting than Shepard, shares Shepard's "Thornton disease". What this means is that every single line of dialogue makes him sound like a douche.
