Posting from the perspective of the PC.

Overall thoughts on the game are, so far, very good.

I'm enjoying are the art, especially spell and ability effects, it lurks so purty. I like the fact that combat is busier in that I'm able, and expected, to use my abilities more often.

There are a couple of things I'm not so hot on - firstly is seeing re-used models from DA:O in trailers and early on in the demo. Though I didn't see any old models in the second part, so I'm fairly hopeful that's the last we'll see. I didn't like the flippy tendencies of the rogues, it felt a little silly to me. The only other thing that bothered me was the fiddlyness of the tactical screen; I personally preferred DA:O style.

There are things I'm on the fence about, be it because we didn't have much room to play with them or that we don't have access to them yet. The main issue is with aoe effects. I felt as though it was almost a requirement to have everyone doing it left right and centre. Don't get me wrong, I'm pleased that we actually get to use it without destroying our party and I was grinning like a child at points, BUT at times it felt like I was back playing my mage in Wrath of the Lich King - if I wasn't using aoe, something was wrong. It makes enemies feel less important and having less need to pick off a particular mob.
The second thing is the three year cooldown on heal. I enjoyed playing Wynne or my own spirit healer in DA:O and relying on healing spells more than healing potions. Hopefully later in the game it all evens out.

All in all I can't wait for march :P

I just want to thank Bioware for adding full party 'pause and play' and 'move to' commands on the consoles. Not having this in DAO made it extremely difficult on higher difficulties unless you went with the 3 mage uber party and it was something that was sorely missed. It adds a more tactical approach that was previously impossible on the consoles. Looking at the skills, it appears as though some of the cross class combinations have awesome potential.

Other than that, it looks as though everything is there that was in DAO - Not completely sold on the new UI, but that is a minor concern. I would have liked to be able to access the inventory but no big deal for a demo. The combat speed was a bit of shock, but that will slow down once you get used to the game and I can see where it has the potential to be a vast improvement over DAO. Game looks fine - I've never cared about the graphics in a Bioware game, there's no need to start now. Hell, I still play Infinity Engine games and love their look. As with all Bioware's games, the story is what draws me in and I'm really looking forward to how it plays out with this game.

Surely in 120 pages this has been mentioned, but a complaint: I hate having to target the ground exclusively for AOE attacks. It basically forces you to pause the game, especially to land an attack with a small impact area in a crowd. It's just a royal pain, imo, and I kinda miss the auto-target "lock on" from Origins.

I initially wasn't sure if I wanted to play the demo because of possible storyline spoilers but am happy to relate that nothing was given away that most people wouldn't be aware of.

I played through on the pc and thought the combat was greatly improved. The rogues speed of attack is much improved and noticeably different from a warrior class. The new ability to backstab was just well.. great in comparison to DAO (the shuffle to get behind the enemy). The mage spells were far more visual and cast faster, for me the mage felt much more part of the team and less like a party backup character. It's also nice not to worry about party spell damage/incapacitation. I never liked the warrior class in DAO, but I really did enjoy the two handed warrior in the demo and might even play this class in DA2.

My husband is an avid FPS gamer and because I told him the combat was faster in DA2 (he has not played DAO because of the slow combat) he decided to give the demo a shot. It took him a while to get to grips with movement as he's used to moving the mouse to control head/weapon direction not the WASD keys and right not left clicking to attack. So in his words..."It's pretty good..interesting...I miss my gun...I'll give it another shot with the full game." I'll try to work my wiles on bringing him over to the RPG light side...

So apart from what already has been mentioned before about lip sync and some stuttering issues, I thought the demo was pretty good, showed off the new combat and conversation wheel and given just enough to whet your appetite...nicely done.

Well, I played the demo last night, as a sword&shield fem/Hawke on the PC, and here are my thoughts.

Art - I liked this. A lot. Very essential and clean while at the same time giving a feel of darkness to come. The styilized figure of Cailan turning into Loghain while the narrator relates the outcome at Ostagar was a nice touch.

Cinematics - I liked the intro. I especially liked Cassandra, both physically and voice-acting-wise. What I didin't like was how battles were interrupted by cutscenes which took a bit to load. Made it all a bit sketchy.

Locations - I get that Hawke and family are fleeing Lothering after the arrival of the darkspawn horde and so Lothering looks like a desert. I explain it to myself as the taint already blighting the land and such but... so soon? It looked just like empty canyons. Not much of the destruction I always envisioned when thinking about it, more like running around in a Mars canal.
I don't have much to say about Kirkwall because all I've seen is a tiny part of it, at night I guess. But I thought a city of that size should have at least some kind of activity going on, some people bustling about and not just the ones out there waiting to be massacred by you and your party. I hope it will look different in the game.

Characters - I don't think the demo gave enough about anyone to go by and form an opinion. I suppose that playing for more than 20 minutes while there are no battles around will probably give more of a feel for the characters. The only ones I've kind of got were Cassandra and Varric. I probably need some more dialogues and codexes to be able to flesh them out in my mind. The only other one that impressed me a bit was Aveline. I felt close to nothing when Carver died, also because none of his family, my character included, seemed to care as much as the situation warranted. Pretty different from the Origins as I experieced them in DAO.
So even on this I'll wait to play the whole game to form an opinion.
A special mention to Flemeth, who was a pleasure to see. Also for her dragon-like walk when she turned back to human and for mentioning Morrigan, the Warden and Alistair. <Cap Reynolds voice>So... Abomination?<off>

Voice - It was... awkward. Might only be because it's the first time I played a voiced character. Could also be that I'll grow to love it when I've had the time to accustom myself to have an in-game voice. So far, fem/Hawke voice did not impress me, in either a good or bad way.
I liked Varric and Cassandra's voice-acting, but all the rest were not standing out for me. Not yet, at least.

Combat - A big, fat NO.
I got people into buying DAO just by showing them the authentic look of the battle seen in close-ups. All those tiny movements, flourishes, shuffling to get into positions, finishing moves and myriads other things that made combat great and this looks like a  clean slate! Where have they gone?
I went through the demo in a heartbeat, without even taking a healing potion, and the only thing I had to do was "press the button and something will happen!" Yeah! You just keep clubbing them into a pulp without any need for tactics or anything remotely resembling a melee fight! There is a reason I don't buy console games: this!
I understand that playing on Nightmare mode might make things a little bit more challenging but still, the party will just twirl their pikes and poke to get things done.
My boyfriend walked behind me while I was taking care of Isabela's little disagreement, watched for a bit and said it looked like a kung-fu cheerleaders parade. Then we agreed that most of the characters were descendents of the Nightcrawler: BAMF! and they were somewhere else entirely.
I am... annoyed, more than disapponted.
Not disappointed because it was there all along, this feeling Bioware had to change things, especially in combat, to give the console gamers what they wanted. I kept hoping that PC users would get a different approach but well, it didn't happen.
I am annoyed because this could mean that I'm getting too old to play RPG games.
Don't get me wrong, I love animes, but I watch them, I don't like playing them. All in all, combat looks too much like anime to me.

Running - What's wrong with people's backs? They all look like they have dislocated something. Fem/Hawke was particularly funny when running. And the darkspawn? :o

Story - Well, this was just the beginning. I do have a bad NWN 2 vibe going on, but I trust Bioware at least in this. The Story will deliver. That's my new mantra.

Conclusions - All in all I decided not to buy the game on the 11th. I'll wait a bit, probably until more DLC are out and then take them all at the same time.
I was super hyped before the demo, but really, now I'm not so eager to start playing anymore. I will also wait to see what kind of mods come out. Something for Combat, to make it slower and grittier if at all possible, will be the first one I get.
Or, since I'll be on the lookout for serious spoilers (because Gaider is my master), if it looks like it has as immersive a story as DAO I'll get it then.

I actually really liked the demo. I don't know why people are complaining about the graphics. They may not be the best, but they are better than the first one. I love the coversation wheel, and thought the combat was amazing! Why do so many people have a problem with the demo? It was really really good! I'm really excited for the full game now!

The combat is a huge step back from first game.

Funny how everyone is repeating this while actually NOTHING has changed since DA:O apart from a more immediate response-time between button-pressing and execution. I played all of DA:O for over 200 hours as well as both 360 and PC-Demos and the annoying "mash A instead of auto-attack" is the only thing that could give anyone the impression that this is a button-masher. ItÄs exactly the same battle engine as in DA:O just more visceral. I can't possibly fathom what's wrong with that.

So a different feel, pacing and balance are "nothing"?

Include active backstab, no tactial view, button mashing instead of strategy, acrobatics in full plate that make Drizzt fights like a stone golem etc. to that nothing.  <_<

I personally loved the demo for what it was; a taste of what's to come. I'm pretty sure this was a build close to what I played at PAX10. I waited in line 2 hours to play that. Worth it then, worth it now.

Thanks guys, can't wait to see DX11 in it's full glory.

I've just finished my third playthrough of the PS3 Demo. I found it to be a mixed bag. This definitely played like a demo. Two weeks from launch, that worries me. I'm sure Bioware will deliver an amazing story, but this demo felt like it needed some serious polishing.

The Graphics and Sound, while better, aren't substantially improved from DAO, as I'd expected. This is tolerable, but a bit disappointing. Both the walking and running animations are ridiculous, as I've come to expect from Bioware games. Sorry, guys. You make my favorite games, but you suck at these animations (and at hair, as both Aveline and the entire Mass Effect franchise aptly demonstrate).

I'm really not sure why Lothering looks like the site of a nuclear attack... on Mars. :?  Kirkwall, while okay, didn't look any better than Denerim or Amaranthine, in my opinion.

The new Darkspawn aren't really to my liking. I much, much preferred those of DAO and Awakening. Oh well, I'll get over it.

There were several jarring hiccups, both aural and visual, during transitions from action to dialogue and vice-versa. There were even some issues during dialogue and cutscenes, themselves. While I hope the full-version of the game will be much more polished, we're pretty close to launch date...

The music is great, in itself, and the voice-acting seemed good, as well. Often, though, the music felt inappropriate, or transitioned too quickly and abruptly. It definitely affected the mood of the demo, so I hope this is improved in the full-version of the game.

All in all, meh. If the full version arrives sans the glitchy hiccups so common in the demo, I'll be content.

The classes seem solid and fun.

Mage is pretty amazing in this demo, and completely outshines the other classes, in my opinion. I do wish I didn't have to watch sweet Bethany die to enjoy this class, but I think mage will be my choice for my first playthrough.

The Rogue was a whirling, death-dealing dervish, and I can see that being fun. The archer build seems particularly powerful.

The Warrior was pretty bland, in my opinion, though the higher-level abilities did make things a lot more interesting. I'm confident every class will be able to hold its own once we have a few levels under our belts. I played as a two-handed damage-dealer, and that's likely part of the issue. The damage-dealing Warrior simply couldn't compete with the damage the Rogue and Mage were inflicting. The Defender build, though, seems incredibly effective, if Aveline's performances are any indication.

The Characters will be a bright spot, I'm sure. They all conveyed clear personalities, even in such a brief snippet of gameplay. I even liked the Templar well enough, though he seemed a bit addled in the head. Maybe he's suffering from lirium withdrawal? He almost seemed simple, as if he couldn't wipe his own ass without his wife's direction.

I really liked Bethany's character. I'm not one of the uber-fans who fall in love with these NPCs and join fan-clubs or the like ( no offense is intended to our friends here who do so). That said, her pretty looks, her sweet disposition and her lovely voice all left me pretty attached to her character right from the start. It sucks that I'll have to watch her die as a Mage, but I'll live with it. Posted Image  If I end up loving the Mage as much as I suspect I will, I may sorely miss Bethany's character during my many Mage playthroughs. Carver was fine, and I'll likely end up really liking him, but Bethany was a stand-out. Plus, I love the story-angle of protecting your little sister from the Chantry.

This probably should've been an Ashley/Kaiden-type scenario, since it will impact the entire rest of the game. The choice to roll with one sibling or the other for each unique playthrough would've been preferable, but whatever. You can't please everyone.

The Gameplay was vastly improved from DAO, in my opinion. The animations are much better, with the various powers each having visually distinct effects to go along with their combat effects. The Rogue is amazingly fast, which I liked. The Mage and Archer Rogue behave much more believably in melee, and the Warrior has a brutal feel. The characters no longer lumber around the battlefield, but move quickly from target to target.

The "pause and play" features seemed intact, to me. Perhaps the PC version of DOA was substantially different? With this being a demo, I don't expect full-functionality. With that in mind, I thought it was very, very close to the options I had for DAO (likewise on PS3).

The basic attack spamming, which consists of mashing the X button on PS3, was a bit tedious. The Mage and Rogue each cool effects and/or speed to break the monotony, but the Warrior was pretty bland. The cooldown times seemed a bit long for some powers (Heal was pretty useless in this demo), and surprisingly fast for others. I suspect character-level will play a part in this.

There's a lot more running through my mind, but this post is long enough. All in all, I enjoyed it.  I'm sure the game will be good. If it arrives in our hands free from most of the pesky bugs the demo displayed, it could be great. DAO managed to be phenomenal despite some of the worst graphics and combat animations my eyes have suffered since Super Nintendo (hyperbole, yes, but it was pretty wretched). I hope DA2 won't have to overcome pesky glitches and hiccups, especially with all the obvious efforts to improve upon DAO's weaknesses.

PC.

Liked - art, combat moves.

Missed - tab (to assess enemies at a glance) and "select all party members".

Disliked - conversation format.

The demo confirmed my understanding that DA2 abandons the RPG format of DAO in favour of an interactive movie. Clearly, this works for a lot of people, but personally I didn't feel any immersion at all.

My preference is to choose what my character actually says, set direction in combat without too much micro-management, and feel involvement in real story choices. What I got was endless combat and cutscenes full of someone else's words.

On this basis, I wouldn't buy DA2 (unless there's a DAO toolset upgrade that allows us to make our own old-fashioned RPG with the resources).

Here I go..

I hate to say it but the demo had a diablo 3 sort of feel - dashes, and blood explosion from enemies... not Origin-sque... more of hack and slash.

Why was the female posture (when they are idle) in the demo like they are at the end of a catwalk? One foot infront of the other. Strut what your mother gave you, Hawke girls?

Flemeth or "Old woman who talks too much" in a low cut clothing - is she trying to compete with Morrigan in how much cleavage each other can reveal?

Like some say, you really don't know what your other team mates are doing. And annoying as hell when they get seperated - in Origins, if they saw an enemy which you didn't, they all went after it. Carver got killed once because he rushed ahead and Bethany sp? stayed behind to play vanguard. I always went to save Bethany first cause she had less HP but Carver's attack did barely any dmg so he got swamped.

Welsey looked stupid with his arms in akimbo and just standing there - at least Hawke's mother looked afraid - he just looked bored. IF YOU ARE BORED, JOIN THE COMBAT  . And he had the annoying tendency to pop out of nowhere immediately after the combat was over to appear infront of Hawke. He can teleport bioware?

The hurlocks were oddly armored. Scale amor is hard enough to make and all melee hurlocks has some on their heads. Who is their blacksmith?! Wasn't the codex from Origins something like they scavage armor from the dead? And the crossbow hurlocks - they had helmets that were standard for crossbowmen back in the day - again, why are they so much better armored this time around.

And last but not least - Did anyone think when orge threw rocks, it sort of looked like the Tank from left 4 dead, and left 4 dead 2? The chunk of earth looked eeirely similar to the concrete Tanks threw.

I know this is only a Demo and it should not be too harsh on it but I still wish to tell my own opinnion. And sadly I must say that demo was nothing what I was hoping DAII to be. My first and last impression was hack and slash Diablo like combat where corpses explodes and characters dashing with speed of light to next mob.

There was nothing left from DA:O, system was new, characters looked cartoon like time to time, armors was unrealistic looking, something that is only drawn on to character, not actually weared like in DA:O.

I loved the DA:O due the fact its old school kind of game, I know meny may not like that and they hope it to be more action based and for these Im sure DAII will be lot of joy. But personally I would love to see option to return combat to same mechanist and feel like it was in DA:O.

Voices was ok, except the part that when brother died ect was happening Hawke has same lame voice, no matter what you are saying tone is about the same, same as facial expressions.

I dont wish to compare DAII to Mass Effect 2, even both seems to be action based it just seems to fit better into ME2.

In the end, I just hope DAII would not be what it seems to be in Demo.

And for those who say "Stop whining, if you dont like dont buy": This is Demo Discussion and feedback. Negative feedback is just as good feedback as positive.

Playing on the pc demo here ...

1. Is it just me or is anyone else getting black silhouettes for the party member faces on the UI and in the Attributes screen, their faces are completely blacked out? I tried to take a screenshot of it but didn't work. I HOPE it won't stay like this when the game comes out.  I really could use help on this one!

2. Only support for DX9 and 11?? I have DX10 ... er where's that support?

3. The targeting of a spell in pause is kinda wonky. I have to jiggle my cursor around the feet of the creature I want to hit, as no where else works ... like in DA:O I could just click and target. Don't like that.

4. For some reason I relly had to press down on my mouse button for certain things to register. Like hitting Confirm or choosing someone to level up. Don't know why.

5. And for some reason Carver was being a dip and no matter how many times I told him to use a health potion ((Quick Heal) even when I was controling him, he REFUSED to do it ... er .... whaa??  N/M saw why back on another thread.

Considering the heat seaking wooden arrows and stat based gameplay, the AOE attacks SHOULD hit no matter what and go against whatever defense checks the enemy has. Instead, you plant the move and there's the possibility that the enemy won't even be there when it hits. It's weird and I think it should be changed.
