Haters gonna hate I guess....

I've enjoyed the demo overall.

I personally would have preferred time with the character creator and less story/combat. Maybe skip straight to the higher level portion with Isabella and reserve the early portion for the full game.

I downloaded it on PS3, and let me say, you guys have really outdone yourselves. I love the changes to the fighting. I actually feel like I'm doing something other than picking what action my character is going to do next. I ran through it with a warrior and mage so far, and let me say, being a mage is A LOT more fun now. I'm not just sitting there shooting out arcane bolts. I'm actually shooting them out and the way the animations look when you do it are beautiful. The graphics are amazing, as always. Dragon Age Origins had great graphics, but this one has even better. I can already tell the story is one I'll really enjoy. And I was disappointed when I couldn't customize, but all the more to look forward to March 8th and try it out!

Overall, you guys did great with DA II, just as good, if not better, than DA:O.

I thought I would hate the new conversation system.  I discovered that I just don't give a crap that it kills immersion for me because immersion was already killed by a dozen other things and I don't give a hoot about Hawke.  I have zero attachment to my character.  I find myself nitpicking some of the idiot design choices, such as why in the world Carver is running around with no sleeves.  If the man survived Ostagar, one would think he would have been wearing something other than the Fereldan equivalent of a tank top with his sword.  I look at the screenshots of elves and cannot fathom what possessed the artists to have them all running around shoeless.  Would you want people in heavy metal armor (including plate boots) and long pointy objects running around your bare feet?  Did it stop snowing in the mountains?  As a sign of poverty among the city elves, I might buy it, but in our party members?  Sorry, no.  And then there are the little changes to lore: weren't templars suppose to take vows of celibacy? Rather difficult to acquire a wife if you are celibate.  Said templar also seems to be moving awfully quickly towards goulhood.  Why is it that Lothering suddenly looks like the Colorado Plateau? Ostagar in RTO didn't look like it had moved to Mars months after the darkspawn took over, so why is it that Lothering would immediately after the darkspawn arrive?  Yes, I'm nitpicking; but I'm noticing these things because I have no immersion in the story whatsoever.   I didn't want to know what these people's stories were.  I didn't want to know what the mysterious relic was.  All I could think of during that encounter was, "Why did the seductive pirate lady get turned into Betty Boop with blades?" and, "If she has an IQ high enough to be a successful pirate captain, the first things she would have done before going to a fight would be to get something more substantial than a nightie to wear."

Then there were the animations, which were more cartoonish than anything.  This is suppose to be a "gritty and realistic" RPG, not Streetfighter, so why is my rogue flopping around like she's auditioning for Cirque du Soleil?  And femHawke's walk?  She has this weirdly awkward hip thing going.  It's more "tween girl trying to be sexy in high heels for the first time" than anything a grown woman let alone a trained fighter would do...in armor.

The final straw was the bugs.  There was the fun "my warrior/rogue has been swinging at this guy forever and is doing no damage at all" which a dev then claimed was the new glancing blows mechanic at work.  It's not working.  The tactics screen was totally flarked up.  There were weirdly long loads at random times.  Audio volume was all over the map.  Fireballs crashed the game.  Heal has a stupidly long cool down if you aren't picking up lots of potions which may be by design, but it makes a healer mage build completely useless.  Aside from those, I actually got off easy compared to the Xbox users who had to reset their Xboxes entirely and the PC users who couldn't get past the character creation screen if it installed at all.  Supposedly these things are all fixed in the actual game, but the demo is such an early build that they are still there.  So...after the RTO debacle you guys decided to put out a game demo to encourage sales two weeks before the game's release based on an old build that is full of bugs?  Really?  More than a year later and you still haven't learned the fine art of QA/QC?

I'm curious about the story.  My teen thinks the pace of the fighting on the console version is better.  If I hadn't recieved the pre-order as a gift that I can't return, I wouldn't bother until it hit the bargain bin.

And all this saddens me.  I haven't loved a game as much as I love DA:O ever, and that is saying
something since I've been gaming since the days of the text-based
adventures on my shiny new Apple IIc.  I fell in love with the story and
the characters.  I've played through the game more times than I can
count and I am still playing it more than a year later.  I wanted to
know how all the origins would play out.  I wanted to see the
consequences for different choices myself.  The writing had me hooked.  I
did what I have never done for any other game and  purchased a second
copy (and upgraded my PC) so that I could move to the PC from the Xbox
because the numerous bugs were destroying the experience of the story.
Those bugs multiplied like a plague of locusts in Awakening.  Worse, the
story and characters were no longer enough to make me want to tolerate
the bugs.  Dozens of runs through Origins and 1.5 runs through
Awakening.  With better immersion and more interaction, I would have
tolerated the bugs.  With fewer bugs, I would have been disappointed
with the new feel of the game, but would have still enjoyed it.  The
combination was simply too much and the subsequent DLC has hardly
reversed the trend.

So now we seem to have even less of what I liked most about DA:O and more bugs than a termite mound.  I'd rather just have David Gaider write another book.

It's sad but everything goes this way. Money indicates success.

Don´t know. I think they expect to sell a lot more than Origins. I guess we´ll get the n million sold first week/month comment. If then the game performs under expectations they´ll wonder why, and if the change of direction had something to do with it.
I just hope animations can be modded to something more sensible looking and that Hawke´s writing isn´t as bad as in the demo.

I played the demo for the PC and aside from a few glitches, I found it to be very enjoyable.
The graphics were what I was expecting. They are definitely an improvement from DA:O, but still have the overall DA feel to them. I found some of the character animations to be a little awkward though, in particular Lady Hawke's run. Looked almost like she was sliding. However for the class selection menu I spent a good 10 minutes just watching the different animations. The animator in me was pleased :P

The combat threw me off at first. Possibly because I haven't played DA in a while, but also the speed took some getting used to. Once I did though, I loved how intense it got and how quickly it forced you to think. I found myself pausing way more than Origins in order to stop and think "okay, how am I going to do this?"
I LOVE the new menus and interface. I didn't think I would at first, but I love how streamlined it all is. Definitely bonus points for that.

There were a few technical issues I ran into. Mama Hawke and Wesley kept getting stuck in one place. Mama Hawke wouldn't move at all. but Wesley kept "popping" up next to my group randomly. He also had no voice when you spoke to him but his lips still moved. I also don't know if it was just me, but I found the intro animation to be a little twitchy in places. I would say it was my computer, but it was bought end of last year and is pretty high spec'd. I'm hoping it's just demo related.

Overall I really enjoyed the demo. In no way has any of the info released made me feel that this game was anything than what was advertised. I'm not really sure why so many people are feeling this way. I'm still as stoked for the 8th as I was before. I know I won't be disappointed :)

I actually really liked the demo. I don't know why people are complaining about the graphics. They may not be the best, but they are better than the first one. I love the coversation wheel, and thought the combat was amazing! Why do so many people have a problem with the demo? It was really really good! I'm really excited for the full game now!

I think people expected too much or are simply being judgemental. There's also of course this nagging voice in the back of the head though that says 'MASSEFFECTMIRRORMASSEFFECTMIRRORMASSEFFECTMIRROR!". The sad thing is, it's probably right, DA2 has most likely been altered in some areas to resemble Mass Effect, but that's simply because Mass Effect was just more popular. In business, you do what the stats say to improve and get more benefit, and that's what the stats said, people simply have to accept that. It still feels like Dragon Age though, but I will definately quit if my mage randomly picks up a gun though and the game changes to shooter mode. =P

I quite enjoyed the demo. Liked the gameplay changes and the graphics. Also, it helped me figure out that it won't run especially well on my PC. I'm thinking I might switch my preorder over to the PS3. I'd lose out on my signature edition, but so it goes.

I found the intro fight scene was ultra-buttony pushing cause it was Varric kinda fudging the story a bit, hence the ultra cool weapons, and all the moves. Once he settled down and told it the right way, the combat seemed more strategic. That was my take anyway.

I found it ultra-buttony as well but I didn't think that changed very much from the intro to the Lothering flight.

Also, was anyone able to scroll out (on the PC) to get an overhead view of the battlefield?  I kept trying but it didn't happen.

I absolutely loved it, so please assume that everything I don't mention is perfect.

The music seems to cut out in cut-scenes sometimes just before a character speaks, and then resumes when they speak. This is noticeable and so detracts from the experience.

When executing basic attacks with the warrior and rogue, we should lunge ever so slightly, so that when enemies are knocked back by the attack we are still in range and don't have to move 6 inches to reach them again.

The movement animation is occasionally sloppy, running needs to be fixed as it looks like you are sliding but it's a demo, so I reckon that ones probably fixed in-game.

I am hoping that you can still start conversations with party members while wandering, and that this was only removed for the demo, otherwise it will be disappointing.

The new dialogue system I am ambivalent towards. I like the way the little pictures give an indication of what the dialogue will include rather than having "good, neutral and bad", but I did like Origins dialogue system because it felt realistic having around six different options, and knowing exactly what we were saying. Granted this did sometimes mean that we didn't know how NPS'c would react but that's realistic, you tell people what you are implying directly, then it makes it more about "winning" the conversation than experiencing a dialogue. I do like it, but think it fits into Mass Effect better, and think it'll be good in Mass Effect 3.

I must admit to be baffled by complaints about character animations, especially facial animations.

Maybe it is because people are used to having more overblown animations in video games, but I thought the facial animation were excellent in the demo. They were not exagerated, but in fact understated, subtle, like in real life.

Aveline's expression when you make the decision to kill her husband is especially stunning. This is a hard woman, and you can tell how hurt she is by her eyes. It's not the tear-filled eyes of an anime character, but the steely repression of her emotions being shown in that one shot. You can tell, right there, that this is a hard woman who is going to bottle up everything inside and, if anything, let it fuel her anger and resolve.

I'm not sure if I want to be there when she finally snaps.

So yeah, it's brilliant. Well done.

After playing both the pc demo and PS3 demo, the choice to buy which version is very clear. PS3 wins. It's evident that DA has been shifted over to be more accesible on the consoles, and I don't think that is such a negative thing. The pc experience wasn't bad, it's just that the game was more fluid and intuitive on the PS3.

Have to agree the PS3 version is amazing, from graphics to how the game plays it's a huge improvement over Origins.

I also have to say Mass Effect 2 way better on PS3 than PC I'm very happy Bioware  is taking advantage of the gaming platform.

Justin Bieber sells millions, hence Justin Bieber is the best musician of all time and any negative feedback regarding his music is meaningless?

He more than likely doesn't give a rip.

If DA 2 ends up selling 120 million copies that wouldn't make it the best game ever... It just means it struck a nerve in what popular with the masses at the time. That's all there is to that.

Finally able to complete a second playthrough, this time with a DW rogue. And I have to say I kinda miss the DAO one.

Don't get my wrong, it's fun to play, but it's no longer my type of character. As bumbling and annoying at it was, I liked sneaking around my enemies and stabbing them in the back, and stealthing once I got too much threat. Not seeing much of that character in the DA2 DW.

But, really, that's okay. My brother loves the new DW, when he couldn't stand rogues before. And I'm really liking how mages play. I haven't gotten around to playing an archer yet, but I like what I've seen so far (been waiting for the demo to download on my PS3).

Unless some of the locked abilities are for more stealthy, tricky, back-stabby styles, I'll be sticking with mages and archers. Posted Image

I love that they added the 'move to' command for the consoles! Big improvement! What I liked less is that u have to push X over and over to attack with ur controlled party member. Hope u can bypass this with ur tactics in a way.

Awesome demo!

I like the differences between the "Legend of Hawke" and the true story. Combat feels very familiar, but is noticeably different. Also...kinda dig the new creature/character designs.

I'm excited to learn about Hawke's story and see what happens to the world. I mean, this game is about the world more than any one character, so I don't feel too cheated that my Warden isn't the focus...though I still want some closure there :)

In DA2 the characters has quicker movements in battle; With graphics more "light" (sceneries and characters was made well). Apparently the game "loses points" in content cause privileges the combats. This is very bad, cause we have so many games in the same proposal or almost the same proposal.

This is the problem of DA2: there is not a really sense or finality besides killing to survive.

DAO has hte "best achievement in directing", best original story, best (1000 times better!) performance by characters.

I hope the demo has hidden better surprises in the final release version.

THIS.

I really loved the demo, aside from the crashes and performance issues (pc version), but the female hawke running animation was just plain weird and unnatural. Combat animations were awesome, cutscene animations seemed spot on, but the normal running animation was horrible.

A good game with some interesting improvements/changes. I'm torn about the graphics, I've playing dragon age origins to get in the mood for DA2 and the graphics feel like an improvement but its hard tell if thats because of actual fidelity or because of the change in style. I like the conversation wheel especially it's icons, I wish their was more range between choices for example when my sibling died Hawke either sounds like a jerk or a sociopath with no option to actually voice grief. Combat is a mixed bag while I loved the fact the warrior and rogue play differently from each other and have their own uses, The combat wasn't very hard and I really didn't have to use tactics to often, in fact the only time I made extensive use of the pause mechanics was during the ogre battle. I would be fine with boss battles been harder than normal fights but the last part of isabella's recruitment appeared to be a boss battle but I cleared thru it with out even thinking. I do however love the game for the same reasons I like the orginal and hopefully the full game has better pacing for combat

Ok I re-read your post. Saying that you find someone's position to be nonsense is discounting it.

What I am suggesting is that the popularity of books is necessarily a function of immersion. I primarily read non-fiction so immersion really isn't that important. I can read a historical work much faster than I can listen to the same information on tape. I also have greater control when reading a book. It is easier to reread, go back or do other things to improve comprehension.

Personally I find that movies, for example, can be more immersive in many ways that books can't. Movies for example can use music and sound effects to convey information and feeling that books cannot.

Again, immersion means different things to different people.

Thankyou ,no I didn't

I stated their claim was a nonsense, not the opinion. It is simple fact that nosiy banging around and screaming breaks concentration .Disliking an NPC's voice is not the same as the dislike of having a voiced protaganist.

This is why as you make reference to movies, they are immersive as you don't roleplay the hero .

Surely you cannot find disagreement in the fact it is counter intuitive to immersion when you are hearing a voice not your own, otherwise you'd be schizo

Now this teleporting dual wielding juggernaut, just meh -_-

WHERE IS MY ROGUE!

After playing the demo, Im very impressed with the changes to the combat to all of the types of play! IM mainly a mage type of guy and I love the fact that I can now fight up close and far away! It feels great! I now feel like the Avatar or something! Then the Rogue class is now just epic!!! I played as a Archer and Button=awesome! I now need to decide what to do first! Archer or Mage! I hated how lame the archers were DAO, but you did very well with it this game! I also picked Female Hawke and tried her out. I feel in love with her design since she looks like a improved Morrigan. I wish the models looked slightly better in detail, but they work I guess. The modeling still feels very dated compared to most current Gen games and the environments arent all that detailed, but they work. I guess Im just used to Uncharted 2, Gears 2, Tekken 6 or Resident Evil 5 or Final Fantasy 13 level graphics. I may be spoiled. Then I also got done playing Killzone 3. I know they are all not RPGs, but their games put out this Gen and are pushing some of the best polys in the business. Mass Effect 2 on PS3 also looks amazing with the amount of detail on character models. DA2 is definitely an big improvement over DAO in every way game play wise and look wise, but the looks could have been upped a tad more. Looks dont make the game per se, but it's a nice bonus. Then again, I dont know how big the world is. If it's more open world or the world is 2x etc bigger than DAO than there is only so much resources that can go into models if the environments are vast.

I actually want to play every class this time around! Great job. And I actually want to play the female side of the game this time as well. Some of the lines are too epic not to. Love the sexy time walk she has! All the animations are amazing! Fighting animations, walking etc.

Loading times SUCK! I hope that is improved when the real game comes out! That was the biggest disappointment of the demo and the odd studders for menus loading up. The character creation part you sit for 2 mins waiting for it to load and tell you you cant use it... That was one of the few times I thought the demo froze. If a game is installed, there should be no loading! Someone at Bioware needs to figure this out... It's lame. FF13 while not perfect, you didnt have to install and it NEVER loaded. Same for Dead Space 2 and some other games. Watching the bar fill 2.5 times one time then 1.5 another for the same area....?!

Loading was the worst part of the demo

Best was gameplay/animations and Voice Acting and cleaned up UI

improved was armor(now looks like something cool to wear)

improved was character models(better than DAO, not better than ME2 PS3)

Button response time=Awesome! Felt your actions going out(esp F-ing Archers!!!!!!!!!) That was the biggest disappointment last game! I love archers and they are now done right!
