- Doesn't show anything really aside from combat. It would have been nice to explore c&c, especially since it's split in two sections.
-- It also doesn't show off the CCC.
- No documentation on what the dialogue icons mean. So it doesn't come across any better off than how Mass Effect handles paraphrasing.
Issues with the demo that may or may not be present in the game:
- Even with 4 replays and a better understanding of what the icons meant from trial, I still don't feel they helped me get a good idea of what to expect. I was uncomfortable making dialogue choices and then disappointed with the results half of the time.
- Bug: Tactics are fubar. Healing should never go to the bottom of a mages tactics. Especially give that it has a long cooldown, there's no reason to hold off on it at all. Surrounded by 2 or more enemies, the default condition for Mind Blast on the default tactics causes Mind Blast to be fired the second combat starts, regardless of enemy location.
- The deaths have no impact given how early they happen in the game. No time for attachment to form with the player. One of the dead didn't even contribute, so I couldn't get attached to him even with more time.
- Bug: I hope it's a bug. Isabela's facial rig needs work. We've seen other builds, so I'm hoping it's not like that in final.
The good:
+ Combat is indeed faster. Especially great that there doesn't appear to be cast-up abilities.
+ Skill trees look interesting. And the gating forces some spread, or so it seems.
+ Cassandra almost seems sympathetic... that was not expected.
Overall, I don't feel it showed enough. I'm not asking for game early, but it should introduce or explain the new features, I feel.

Overall, the demo was successful at introducing the type of game and giving potential players a good idea of what kind of game it is to potential buyers. So...good job on the demo.
As far as whether it convinced me to buy? No, I won't be. The dialog wheel has the effect on me I had predicted - separates me fromt he character a great deal. I find myself thinking, "I wonder what she'll say if I choose this" rather than, "This is what she would say". Judging from the tone the game presents and some things I've read from David recently, I'd already decided not to play any romances, and to try not to get attached to any of the NPCs. The framing of the narration is an interesting concept, and isn't in itself a bad idea, but this in combination with me not getting attached to my PC or the NPCs means I'd likely approach the story from a very detached, meta-gamey perspective - not something that is conducive to me enjoying an RPG.
I should not have chosen a dual wielding rogue as my first play through. I thought combat frantically paced, but not overly challenging at normal difficulty. I found myself using tactics that served to slow things down and get my character out of the thick of things, pausing frenquently not because it was necessary to use any tactics, but just to stop the activity for a moment. It did serve to extend my play through to 90 minutes, though. The talent trees are interesting, and seemed useful. Walking animations looked painful on the back. The exploding bad of blood animations were...tiresome. Whatever. I wish I could zoom out more for various reasons, but I'd just zoom out as far as I can, turn off persistent gore, and try to focus on hit points, cool downs, and the battlefield as a whole while I ignore the animations and special effects as best I can. So, I've seen worse combat, but not really my cup of tea.
So the overall final effect of the demo is that it's not a buy for me at release price. I'll take a look again when the price point comes down to $30-40 or some super, gotta get 'em all/precious metal bundle comes out (likely near Christmas, unless I miss my guess).

I must admit to be baffled by complaints about character animations, especially facial animations.
Maybe because the death of a loved one (Husband, Child) were meaningless, the characters who are the actors in these cutscenes were terrible, it felt like a step back with the dialogue, the reason it wasn't picked up in Origins was because of the amount of dialogue and how deep it was, this time it's 3 choices pull 3 faces, heck I just recently played through Jade Empire and thought that the facial animations were as good if not better on the main character.

(+) The combat is frenetic and fluid, with battle animations looking crisp and very well done.
(+) Hearing my character speak was a huge bonus. The silent protagonist hasn't been cool since Chrono Trigger back in 95.
(+) I'm a big fan of the new art direction, though I have to ask why all of the women still have giant breasts that are always perky. Even Flemeth had the body of a 19 year old, which is just unrealistic.
(+) The new skill tree looks outstanding, though I'm a bit hesitant on its size. If there isn't a level cap, I'm worried that everybody's Hawke/supporting cast will all end up the same.
(-) The sound and dialog skipped far too many times for my liking. I'm well aware this is a demo, but it makes me uneasy for the finished product, considering it will be on the streets in less than two weeks.
(-) The music is largely forgettable, much like it was in DA:O. I was hoping for a better score.
(-) Too many hiccups during battle, I had multiple freezes in combat in just this short demo.
(-) The graphics were very lackluster, and considering that this isn't an open world game, I expect much better. I also noticed a fair amount of clipping and shadows that refused to obey their light sources.
Hopefully my concerns will be alleviated once I come home with this game and that this demo has been sitting in your office for weeks. If this was pulled from the finished product though, I may end up letting the disc just sit on my shelf until it has been properly patched. Please BioWare, don't pull an Obsidian and rush out an unfinished product. Whether or not I like your games content, they have all been polished works that exude quality. It only takes one bad offering for me to withhold my money from a developer though, I don't have unlimited funds. The quality of DA2 will largely determine whether or not to buy any DLC or full blown expansions for this game.

the thing is it seems like a good enough game, some of the writing is excellent, Varric/Cassandra... some of it I find stilted and dramatically handicapped such as the entire prologue we play during the demo, though quality rises when we meet Flemeth.
Animation is good though, but I have already noticed one huge flaw and I can't believe that it went past Mark Laidlaw and his team of designers (Second biggest flaw, the biggest one is that Rogues Can't use swords and Axes that is still a choice of retardation I can't get over.) Anyho, now while I do not lament the loss of the tactical view, there is a certain need of a better control of the camera when you use a area effect ability, such as firesball or firestorm.

I had the same thing. put that .dll name in your search engine and choose the microsoft link for the direct x download. There is file called "dxwebsetup.exe" that will install what you need. After installing, do the configure option again and refresh your system specs as it told me it couldn't find a supported video card after installing. It ran for me after that.

Bioware, thanks for the demo. You saved me 50 bucks and, more importantly, tens of hours of lost time.
Dragon Age II is poised to be the worst disaster in the history of the company.
Yeah, I know we are discussing a demo, but the central elements are all there and it's what the developers/publishers are thinking better demonstrate their game.
Even discounting the above tendencies, it's amazing how badly this game was messed up. Many have already said so in the forums. Ugly, flickery graphics. Bad face acting. Sloppy, out of place writing. Lack of emotional connection. Amazingly empty environments, gray, fugly, without character nor mood, that make me think this should be a pre-alpha version. Ridiculous, clown-like darkspawn that tend to provoke laughter rather than fear. Hugely, immensely overblown weapons to the point of — again — provoking laughter. Overflashy, impossible combat animations and effects that constantly detract from immersion. Very little tactical possibilities, corridor-like maps, enemies that spawn at predetermined points, all of that leaves gamers zero choice in how to approach the game. User interface... what can I say? Amateurish. It really seems like a browser-based game interface. And, again, a complete disregard of the gameplay elements for the story being told. So we are poor refugees, but we are fighting like accomplished ninjas against lots and lots and lots of darkspawn. And I'm not referring to the first "fable" version of the tale, but to the second one. Actually, and quite ironically, there is not a lot of difference between the two. So the ogre comes, easily kills the previously "die hard" Bethany, but is next beaten up quite easily — along with many, many many hurlocks — by the remaining three little guys. Speaking about ogres, where are their great grabbing moves? Where is the finishing move against them? All combat moves are just flashy jazz with lame flame and blood effects that don't seem like real blows are being dealt. Similarities with JRPGs are enourmous.
The only thing that is not sub-standard in the game is the voice acting, ever the quality we know from Bioware. Unfortunately, the text being acted is very, very weak. Mind you I'm not complaining about the ME dialogue system per se, but how it's been implemented in DA2. Dialogue trees are gone. You can pick from two bland and one ridiculous answer, to get the same generic response from the character you are dialoguing with. Short, empty lines of dialogue, represented by even shorter paraphrases, make situations that should have been emotional pass really fast and empty. It feels like gamers won't tolerate lines that last more than 5 seconds to deliver.
If I had to sum up all of the above in two lines, I'd say that the DA2 team cut a lot of corners, sacrificed immersion, had an incredibly bad taste, jumped into "BIG" thinking that meant "epic" and managed to look amateurish even while doing all that. HOW COULD BIOWARE SCREW UP SO BADLY??! I'm amazed.
I really wished to like DAII. I am not of those complainers about "Mass Effectization" of DA. I even thought ME2 BETTER than ME1, and about as good as DAO, or better. It's not about PC vs consoles, paraphrases vs. whole dialog lines, silent vs voiced. It's about immersion. ME (1 or 2) never felt silly or rushed. All the combat moves were plausible, and fit the game setting. ME created immersion. DA2 goes out of its way every second to destroy immersion, even if we try hard to maintain our suspension of disbelief. It's as if DA2 told you, the gamer, at every turn: "hey, you think you are playing Hawke's epic tale? No, you idiot, this is just a silly game! Look at the gross, big, weapons! Look at the incomplete landscape! Look at how your attack and defense numbers are against "normals", "subbosses" and "bosses". Look at the little stars that fly when you hit someone! Look at the stupid clowns that you think are darkspawn! Look at how rogues "teleport", 2-handed warriors hit with "the wind" around their weapons and rogues shoot entire quivers into the air at once, and arrows rain only over enemies! Look at the clichés in dialogue! You still think you are part of a good tale? I'm just a silly game."
I NEVER THOUGHT I'd be cancelling my preorder, even if I didn't like the game that much. The demo did that for me. I am really surprised at how bad the game is. And don't think I'm cancelling out of spite, or DAO fanboyism, or something like that. It's just because I don't see myself sinking hours into a game that makes me cringe from disgust at every turn. I was hyped. Now I'm bored.
Something happened with the Dragon Age team. I don't know what, but something really bad must have happened. HR, Management, EA factor, infighting, whatever. Perhaps someday we will hear about it from some ex-employee blog or something.
And I'm not buying the "dumbing down sells" argument. Good games sell. DAO sold a lot. The Witcher sold a lot. Baldur's Gate 2 sold a lot. ME2 sold a lot. The Halo series sold a lot. These are all different games, with different areas of complexity and simplicity. But they are all good. They "click". They create immersion. DA2 is not just "dumbed down". It's simply awful. It doesn't "click". It's going to be a flop, if not in absolute numbers (after all, Bioware has enourmous brand-power), certainly for Bioware standards. I really hope Bioware learns the lesson after that.
Somehow I feel relieved after writing all this and getting it out of my system. I was mad at Bioware for doing such a bad game after DAO, but now it's ok. I am cancelling my preorder now. I still care about the franchise, and I will read the DA2 storyline in Wikipedia just to stay current. The bright side: I will have more time this year to play The Witcher 2 and, hopefully, Mass Effect 3. Hopeful that I am, I expect those to be really good games.

good:
-dialogue wheel with talking protagonist
-from what we got to see interesting and well made characters
bad:
what can be distilled into one word: artstyle
really don't like the hack & slash turn DA has taken, sure it was fun but I would take the DAO combat which actually looked far, far better and less like a japanese RPG, which I happen to not like at all
also stating the obvious these are my own opinions so don't hate me and please no "herp, derp U be not forced to buy game, go away from forumzzz", thank you

the company that produced it.
Looking at the game as a whole and the now very ugly interface it appears they were making this for the
console or rather more console friendly, and that would have been fine if they had not also revamped the game in the process.
I have never canceled a bioware pre order ..I hate the thought of even considering it, but I can't see anything being changed this late in the game even if they wanted to. Some will say this is the demo and is not a fair indicator of how the released version will be..so don't judge the game solely on a 45min demo?
Well I would think this demo would represent the best things from the game that bioware would want to showcase, that being said the game is georgeos and ran really well on my PC but did not "feel" anything like DAO if that make sense?
Now ME2 on the other hand the first few minutes in even with all the changes still at its core still had the same magic as ME1.
I would love for someone to show me footage or a trailer of DA2 that shows me at the heart of DA2, DAO is still there.

My one complaint was how the healing potions seemed to work - I would queue up a drink healing potion order on a character but the character wouldn't execute it - an auto-attack would seem to overwrite the drink healing potion order. I had to literally run characters out of combat to get them to actually drink the healing potion. Not sure if this is intended or whether I am missing something or what?

all and all, i really enjoyed it alot, oddly enough i didn't dig the rogue as much as i thought i would, enjoyed the warrior alot more. the mage doesn't seem to have as much "OOMF" as before, which is a good thing, mages in DA:O were way too powerful.

People, this was nothing more than an effort to give players a chance to experience the new combat system and the updated conversation style, so that should really be the only aspects people comment on.
For my part, I loved it all. Combat in DA:O was clunky, awkward, and it had a tendency to get in the way like someone driving slow in the passing lane. The new combat system is already a huge improvement and the pacing is terrific.
The big test for me was how the mage and archer would play. These were the two combat styles I found to be painful in DA:O and the developers gave them each a complete 180 for me to the point where I haven't decided which is more fun.
On the conversation piece it felt very familiar and all the parts that worked for me for DA:O were kept in place: excellent voice acting (thank you Simon Templeman, the man who's made a career out of video game v.o.) and solid character modeling. Being a HUGE ME fan, I loved the updated conversation wheel followed by the character's expansion on the dialogue.
The demo is a taste of what's to come and, if we know anything at all about BioWare, that's all. The full game will be much more engaging.

Armor looks like it's not "worn", it looks like it's painted on characters.... which is especially the case with that templar armor...
I agree with you. They stated that the clothes are "fixed" and it seems it is not really worn on the character models. I'm saddened that an armor's appearence will have less of an impact than in the previous game.

BIOWARE, ALLOW AOE TALENTS TO DIRECTLY TARGET ENEMIES!
It was really annoying in DAO when you were trying to aim for the ground, but the spell kept snapping to an enemy or group of enemies standing on top of it. I am glad that AOE is free of all target snapping.
