I have one word to sum up Dragon Age 2.

Gigantism.

EVERYTHING MUST BE BIGGER AND MORE EXTREME AND THAT MAKES IT BETTER BECAUSE WE'RE MEN AND WE LIKE WHEN THINGS ARE ALL EPIC AND WE'RE NOT FIGHTING A FEW MONSTERS WE'RE FIGHTING TONS AND TONS OF WRETCHED BEASTS.

MOTHER ****ER, IN THE FIRST LEVEL A DRAGON CAME TO HELP ME AND I EVEN TOLD IT I DIDN'T NEED ITS HELP.

I'M SUCH A BADASS, SO EPIC.

I am stuck in the terrain on a rock and cannot move.  it kind of defeats continuing on.  there does not seem to be a save option in the demo to load a previous save or resume.

I get the feeling that people who hated this went in expecting to hate it, since most of the complaints, ( besides text size) seem like just more of the same thing we have been hearing for the past few months.

I went in expecting to love it...guess I am the exception to the rule?

Just finished playing the Demo on the PC.

In no particular order.

1.)  I didn’t notice a significant change in the graphics. I play Origins on PC and never understood why so many people were hating on them. I did notice that the problem with faces, swords and beards meshing oddly with
armor was gone. That was nice to see.

2.)  I had the same problem as many others commented on with the loading message in the cut scenes even though my computer is well within system requirements. There was once or twice I suspect I lost out on part of something
because of it.

3.)  The art style…why o why was it such a big deal to mess with this? Yes, what armor I could see looked better, but the Darkspawn are NOT an improvement. Especially the ogres, in Origins I used to cringe with trepidation
whenever they came on screen. These ones leave me with a (almost) pity for them. They remind me of the trolls in LotR….big, slow children being forced to do bad things. I, also, don’t care for how everything got a whole lot sexier.
**Cough Flemeth, Isabelle**

4.)  The fighting style (ties into art?). Why is my rogue looking like something out of Ninja Gaiden in Dragon Age? It’s distracting and kind of messed up. Yes, more agility and finesse would be welcome but this is WAY OVER
THE TOP.

5.)  The blood………Oh, the blood. How I loved to be drenched in visceral fluids at the end of a fight in Origins. Now I can’t see the next enemy for all the spray in the air. It’s not even spray, it’s giant fountains
of bubbly blood. It’s too much of a good thing.

6.)  I’m not impressed with the user interface at all. DA:O was very ascetically pleasing. The party icon at the top in their fancy little circles, the spells and items on the bottom in a nice boxed setup, the inventory and other options having their own design at the top of the screen, the codexes. All were done in an archaic style that fit just right. But it’s more that ascetics.

7.)  The user interface is not very intuitive. If I had not played Origins or Awakenings I would have been a lot more lost than I was trying to navigate through the menus. Some of it might be because it was demo and large parts were locked. I never did, however, figure out where the codex were hiding so I could read them.

8.)  Tactics. Others have mentioned how touchy they are. If you somehow mess it up the first time and have to try to refit the tactics they don’t want to respond well. For those of us who rely heavily on their use the setup and implementation renders them nearly useless. On the plus side, changing party members to different attitudes was nice and a good way to keep Bethany out of harms way.

9.)  The reduction of talents and spells. I’m really not sure how I feel about this. I don’t think the demo was sufficient in shaping a well rounded opinion on this. As it stands, I’m not particularly impressed.

10.)  OMG THE CAMERA! The constant  self-adjusting and the non-existent isometric camera view are a serious headache inducer. I really feel like BW threw that “extended” camera angle in there to make PC gamers happy. It’s hardly works to show you what the battlefield looks like or where you’re party members are. The constant
pausing to move in a 360 motion to checkup on everything interrupts the flow of the fight. The way this is implemented into the game makes me seriously think this was designed for the console and the console only. I was just only beginning to adjust to the camera when the demo ended and can’t say that I think it was a change for the better.

11.) Potions. At first I didn’t even know where the potions were. I didn’t have to use more than one or two but I don’t like the way this was put into practice this go round. There was something reassuring in knowing that even if you were fighting with your last breath you could always take the next greater potion to keep you going.

12.) This was my first experience with the dialog wheel, having never played with a voiced protag before. Seems okay tho. Again, not much in the demo to really demonstrate it. I wasn’t able to actually talk to anyone
while we were questing, if converstaion is like Awakenings then it’s unlikely I’ll go out of way to talk to party members.

What I came away with was this…..If you’ve never played DA:O or DA:A then you could step into this game and think it’s pretty cool. But if you have you’re going to notice the stark differences and be left wondering why it’s named Dragon Age II instead of something like “Adventures in Thedas”.

It needs a save feature to counter all of the crashing. Also, what's with the auto-level up on Hawke after escaping the Blight?

Just finished it now, and I'm definitely looking forward to playing the full game before making any final judgements. I'm playing on PC. Had the dll issue, but installing the DirectX runtime in the game folder solved that. It's odd that the demo installer didn't invoke the DirectX setup, but that's minor I guess.

Actually it did, or at least it says it was.  With UAC totally disabled, there is not reason it should have failed on my system (but it did).

OK, so here is a second fix (and easier) fix than the one I post above.  Just surf to your ???\\Dragon Age 2 Demo\\redist\\DirectX folder and run DXSETUP.exe (about 1/3rd the way down the list of files there).  Good catch Ashaman, I did not even think to run their copy of it.

putty patrollers.

I completely forgot their name, but this has been mentioned multiple times in this thread but it always cracks me up seeing the darkspawns as some sort of cartoon/childrens show bad guys.

Anyone else noticed that the video at the end of the Demo, Hawke's mother and Cassandra's hair gets switched? (Cassandra goes from black to grey/white, Hawke's mother goes from grey/white to black.)

LMAO I LOVED the demo, but honestly my only concern was the awkward scuttle of the Darkspawn as they ran up to Hawke during the escape from Lothering. It was way too fast and it literally made the sight of them moving up to the player unintentionally hilarious.

EVERY time I saw a group of darkspawn running up to me I literally was thrown back to the classic Power Rangers putty patrollers. Come to think of it the new look is kind of similar... LOL Oh god Bioware, what hilarity have you wrought upon us? All you need now are the goofy putty noises... please god give us a mod kit lol...

I don't want to even get started of the Darkspawn. I really don't. If I would, then even Izzy could not soothe my wrath.

I'm sorry if this question has already been answered, but will we be able to enable a DA:O style "auto-attack" on the console version of DA2

The demo is fantastic. I played through it in both PC and '360. My only gripe is constantly mashing the "A" button on the '360 version. I was tired of it after the intro scene, ending with Flemmeth, and I hope that I can simply enable an option to have auto-attack in the full game.

So if anyone can answer this question, or post a link to where it's been answered before by the dev team, I'd greatly appreciate it. Thank you!

P.S. I'm on board the day one train with my '360 Signature Edition. I'll "double dip" on the PC version when it hits $30 in a Steam sale. So hyped for March 8th!

This is going to be a story spoiler, so read at your own risk.

I understand that Carver dies if you are a Warrior/Rogue, and Bethany dies if you are a Mage.

Please make this a player choice, other than predetermined by your class. Carver is a whiney little ****, and I should always have the option of him being crushed by an ogre at earliest opportunity.

I went in expecting to give it a chance knowing that all of the gameplay footage released beforehand led to believe it was a dumbed down Dragon Age: Origins. Turns out it was even worse than i expected, the whole game was like a bad JRPG trying to play like an action game.

 Played the PS3 Demo
  • + Archer feels like what I wish it was in Origins
  • + Mages are still just as fun
  • + Combat feels smoother even if it's overexaggerated
  • + Ability "web" works really nicely
  • + Art style is interesting
  • + Explanations for companion's friend/rival abilities were a nice touch
  • + Isabela's voice acting
  • - Isabela's outfit; emphasize the chest, legs, or butt, not all three at once
  • - Clipping and graphical issues; the mother is mourning the loss of her child and all I can think of is "why is that black block there?" and, before that, "why does she have a line down her chest - open heart surgery?"  Also, why was the front lock of Isabella's hair darker than the others?
  • - Audio can be jarring; I understand the demo's spliced, but especially when talking to Isabella at the end the "no sound at all" between dialogue really stands out
  • - Tutorial pop-up takes up a HUGE amount of the screen.; hope we can chooses the size in the full game

I hate the loading and the pauses during a cutscene, I really hope this isnt going to make in the game. I mean in ME2 the cutscenes have much more fluent. So it is possible!

My impressions: played it on PC and was probably one of the 3 people in the world who didn't experience any bugs including while using DirectX 11 (but then the framerate fell from 70 to 20). I really enjoyed the way the combat looks now: mages got some awesome animations and the archers are a thousand times better than in origins, I'm a warrior sort of guy and I'm actually considering playind one (archer) my first time through, SnS warriors and Dual wielding rogues remain basically the same in my opinion. Now, I've got say that while I found the new two handed warrior animations and skills pretty good, the damage was just awful, I mean I have a 4 feet sword and barely deal more damage than a dual wielding rogue or a mage when not using my skills. Mages remain completely op, I beat the section in which Varric was exagerating 50% faster with a mage, in comparison with a rogue or a warrior. AI just seems dumb: enemys would spawn behind my party and simply ignore the characters that were standing back and head straight for the tank leaving beathy/hawke free to rain fireballs at them. Liked the new graffics, disliked the new massive armor style (they just don't seem massive anymore). Loot seems reduced, I don't like that. The dialogue wheel is fine. UI just looks ugly, except for the quick bar. Overall it looks good, but Bioware has to fix the warrior damage.

Not sayin' people can't dislike the changes, but "because the old stuff was okay" is not a really in of itself a good reason.  Explain why the new stuff is bad, what it does wrong in your eyes, and how the old stuff was superior.  Then no pictures mocking your argument.

Please feel free to take everything I say out of context.  You Douche.  Also here is a pictue for you :)

Has everyone forgotten about the problems with DA:O? I mean, just the fact that there is now a cooldown on healing means that success in combat on higher difficulties wont be about managing healing effectively anymore. This means having 2 mages in the group might not be the only sensible party choice for higher difficulties.

Also, they included stamina potions this time! Coupled with the cooldown on potions this means that mana and stamina are now comparable resources. No longer is magic infinite as long as you carry around a garbage bag full of potions, while stamina is something that lets your fighter blow off a couple of big swings with his sword before he's spent.

You felt so impotent as any other class than mage in DA:O. Honestly, though it had it's good sides, that game was just broken. I can't believe so many of you defend it now.

Really enjoyed the demo.  I had one question.  Will it be obvious to us which quests advance us towards a time warp and which ones are side quests that we can handle safely? I'm the type who likes to do all available side missions first and then dip into the main storyline.  Will it be easy to differentiate the two?

I was wondering, is the demo generally an old build for all the platforms? I was playing it on the PS3 and I noticed a few things like the lack of battle cries/grunts from everyone and audio hiccups.

I'm having a bit of a crisis of faith here. I wanted to enjoy the demo, everything I've seen so far looked great, but I found that the demo was somewhat uninspiring. I blame this predominantly on the fact that the console version had no auto-attack toggle, and the constant pressing of A reduced my ability to concentrate on analysis. I know this feature is planned to be in the full game, so I don't worry so much about that.

My big problem is the voice-acting. It was emotional, and was not wooden or anything like that. It's just that Hawke's voice varied so greatly in each dialogue option, the transition felt forced. I still hold that a voiced protaganist can be roleplayed fine, but only if each dialogue style you choose sounds like the same person saying it. If I play a mainly paragon Shepard, for example, but choose a renegade option, then it just sounds like Shepard is angry, but Hawke sounded so different each time. I played an angry, yet sarcastic Hawke, but sarcastic Hawke sounded so different than when angry, I found I was restricted only to anger if I wanted to come off as a single person. Can someone confirm that this is not a regular occurence, and it was the couple I chose that didn't work?

Another problem I found was that the combat was quite sterile. I found that the heal had way too long a cooldown time and that the combat was much harder to play tactically, partly due to pace, partly because I kept having to tap A. The animations were a little clunky, but that doesn't matter much to me. However, I did find the boss battle with Hayder enjoyable, possible because it was harder, and I've been playing Origins on nightmare recently. I hope so, because if all I need to do is crank the difficulty up, that means my newfound concerns are for very little.

Of course Flemeth had the body of a 19yo. Bioware are running out of original ideas if this demo is anything to go by. Its all flash and no substance. Seriously the game looked and felt like a badly done Final Fantasy game, which wouldn't of been too bad if it had been an indie game but a product of Bioware? You've got to be kidding me.

If I was an elderly shapeshifter, I'd give myself the body of a nineteen year old too.
