+ Combat is more visceral.

+ Graphics.

+ UI is more streamlined.

+ Warrior class is much better. I found them boring in DA:O.

Hated:

- Some presentation issues.

- Conversation wheel was out of place. Needs more emotion choices?

- Rogue character is too agile or on crack.

PS3 version: I did two run-throughs last night: male warrior 2H, and female rogue DW.

Pros:

-The art, especially the backgrounds, is a lot more vivid and colourful, which is very much welcome.

-The animations are definitely more fluid. No real framerate issues.

-Combat does feel more fun, especially as a rogue. Rogue seems good at both DPS and crowd-control, able to quickly move around the battlefield where s/he's needed. Much like DA:O, it's a lot better after gaining a few levels and having a couple of combat options at your disposal. 2H warriors don't seem to account for themselves very well; hopefully they're better at higher levels (Scythe is really good at clearing out enemies, I must say). I do miss my DW warrior.

-The framing device is great. I like Varric and Cassandra, especially the latter, who in this brief demo has already shown hidden depths beyond the hardass inquisitor facade.

-Flemeth is still Flemeth.

-Most of the voice acting is good.

-I think the Mass Effect dialogue wheel with the addition of icons is a very positive addition. Really, the only difference between it and the DA:O menus is now you know *how* Hawke will deliver the dialogue.

-Aveline is my favourite character thus far. She was probably the most useful companion in combat, able to pin down major threats solo, and her voice-acting and writing were top-notch. Even though their screentime was very brief, she and Wesley made an authentic devoted couple (the way she protected and supported him without emasculating him was believable and made both of them very sympathetic), and her grief at his death was very genuine. The high point of the demo for me. Very sad she's not a romance option.

-Default male Hawke looks *exactly* like me. I may not even customize his appearance. Female Hawke's pretty cute too. Their voice acting is good, but this demo didn't really give them a lot to do. (Hampered by the writing around Hawke's family/sibling death--see below.)

Cons:

-Auto-attack is sorely missed. It's extremely difficult to play tactically if you have to keep babysitting Hawke by spamming X. I'm hoping this is a demo limitation restored in the main game. Also, having to manually switch targets after every kill (or stand there slack-jawed doing nothing) is a pain.

-Combat's a bit *too* fast and busy--it's hard to play tactically when you can't follow what's going on. It's the opposite of DA:O--there, I could see what was going on but my party was frequently unresponsive. Here, they're so fast I don't have time to pause-and-play. To be fair I need to play around with the tactics menus some more.

-Darkspawn aren't very scary: in DA:O, at low levels three or four darkspawn were a threat. You weren't even allowed to fight an ogre until Level 6 or so. In the demo, there were waves of disposable spawn who went down like punks, the "grunts" who took a good 30 seconds of slashing to take down but otherwise were just as pathetic, and the ogre, who was really time-consuming but not very dangerous. My rogue let the rest of the party slash and burn him while going around picking off hurlocks.

-There are places where the "action" elements dominate too much over the "RPG". I kept targeting onrushing darkspawn with the rogue stun grenade attack, and even though they were in the targeting circle when I activated it, they continued to run forward and the grenade went over their heads. Are we expected to lead targets in an RPG?

-I didn't get emotionally worked up over Carver's death, because as many people have noted, I didn't have time to build emotional attachments with my family. In most of the DA:O origins, you had a good 30-40 minutes of conversing and interacting with the people in your life *before* you were forced into combat situations or death scenes, and that emotional build-up was crucial. As the human noble I felt the panic in my mother's voice when the castle was stormed, and grieved for my slain nephew and sister-in-law, worried about my brother, and burned for vengeance against my father's killer. Here, I exchange all of 3 lines of dialogue with Carver before his head is squashed like a pumpkin, my mother berates me for a situation well beyond anyone's control (she may be a perfectly great mother, but this is not a good introduction to her), and my brother is not 2 minutes dead before I'm exchanging flippant dialogue with Flemeth. I understand in a CRPG sometimes these narrative leaps are necessary but the emotional whiplash is a bit much in this situation. Especially when it's contrasted in the same scene with the Aveline/Wesley situation, where in just a few minutes of screentime with just a bit of dialogue, I feel that they really have a deep and supportive relationship, and feel more choked up about Wesley's fate than Carver's.

-It's hard to take Isabela seriously when she's hiding those balloons under her shirt. Female rogue Hawke looks lithe enough to pull off the flips and jumps she does, but with Isabela I keep expecting her to be thrown off by gravity. I think it was possible to build on her original model from Origins and keep her inherent sexiness without inflating her proportions.

I'm cautiously optimistic that these issues are demo related or just a few speed bumps in the story I can overlook. Still looking forward to March 8th!

Played the demo a few times and here are me thoughts:

I really liked the graphics. I usually like my settings at max but with the medium settings It looked great. I really love the eyes.

The female animations are an improvement, the hip swagger is a little much but I'd take this over what they were before in DA:O.

As far as battle goes it was a little alien to me but it was something I quickly picked up.

It was a little troublesome trying to level up the team. Basically after leveling up Hawke, I'd click on the party members portraits and I'd mostly go back to the game. Got it worked out in the end but yeah ^_^;

And sound was really low despite it being turned up in game.

I'm glad to hear the loading during conversations has been taken care of.

The demo was a sweet little slice of pie, but I'd like to have the whole thing. Eagerly awaiting it. You guys and gals at Bioware are great. :3

All,

I found the combat to be ackward considering the size of the area in view and the angle of the camera.  I'm a huge fan of the 3rd person view, but it needs to be zoomed out more.  What was wrong with the same combat style from DAO?  The mage is very hard to use.  I miss the left mouse drag around party too.  I don't know...I really didn't like it.  Sorry...I don't think it will be a purchase.  The graphics are amazing though!!  Bioware has been good to me in the past, but not with this one.

how can people say that the rpg elemnts are dumbed down when things like the ability trees are technically more advanced and all the rpg elements are still there.

Simply, faster paced combat.

Well, great. I wanted to give detailed, objective feedback. The demo disappointed me so much I don't think there's a point - it's obvious BioWare has completely stopped caring for PC fans to even consider listening.

I hate the combat, but that's purely subjective. Diablo II had more tactical depth to it. I didn't die a single time in the demo, I didn't need to pause, worse, I didn't need to think. No, not "like a general", at all. It's mindless clicking. There's a little (for most, I assume) quirk that bothered me the most... no quivers. Yes, archers have no quivers anymore, neither arrows. You guys didn't even bother with an animation and models somethings that's as damned essential to archery as the bow itself. Can I at least get a blaster, please, then? The magic staff sure sounded like one.

No traps, no bombs, no poison limited arrows, no stamina. It's just spamming.

Abysmal interface and camera. The interface is horribly intuitive, slow and pretentious. It blocks huge parts of the screen (esp. on a 4:3 or a 5:4 monitor) and it's generally more obtrusive than helpful. And it simply lacks any style and flavor - Origin's was better, it character and was far more useful and unobtrusive.

Horrible level design. It doesn't matter what lighting effects you can put in if the locales are going to be so bland and have a single path. Most game are linear, but at least they trick you into believing they aren't. You guys laughed at JRPGs (and for the record I'm not a fan of JRPGs) for their shortcomings, yet Dragon Age II seems a lot like one. Both in it's senseless inconsistent world (visually inflating everything) and it's constrained, prison-like locales.

Horrible texture resolution. Special effects (fire, mostly) was very nice, though. Lighting does look good, although I'm still undecided if it's better than Origins.

The dialogue wheel is bad. The paraphrases are very hit-and-miss and truly, truly brings down the great writing. I enjoyed the cutscenes where I actually didn't get to say anything and spoil the dialogue. And I can see how much more constrained dialogue will be in Dragon Age II compared to the original...

Lastly, regarding combat... it makes the world very inconsistent. Combat in cutscenes is completely different than that in the gameplay sections. Take Isabela's brawl in the tavern, for example (it's available on YouTube rendered in-game). It's somewhat faster than realistic, more abrupt, but it's plausible. If that's how the actual combat worked, and based on the depth of the original, it would have been fantastic.

The only thing I can see myself enjoying would be the story. Once again, thanks to the writers for making me feel that tingle of anticipation of "what happens next?" Maybe in a year or two, when it's incredibly and some talented modder who isn't bound by EA's strategy turns it back into a tactical and difficult RPG, I'll get it.

Thanks for the demo, and for limiting the SE geographically so I couldn't preorder, because I've saved 60$ on a game I wouldn't have enjoyed that much. I simple don't like hack&slash anime action.

The demo was just plain fun for me. Everything was improved upon from Origins. It flows smoother, faster and is more dynamic. The cutscenes really drawed me in. I'm just excited for Mar. 8 to get here.

I wish there was an early release of the character builder. ;__;

Oh one thing that grabbed me I forgot to mention, The EYES. I love the new eyes on all the models! Great job to whomever at Bioware did them! They sucked me in every conversation!

I thought these suffered from the same thing as unmodded Origins eyes did, which was kind of a glassy monochrome look.  LoTC's eye textures ended up being one of my favorite mods, for the subtle shading it gave.

I was playing as F Hawke and I felt I could stare into her soul... I liked them. It's like Morrigan with blue eyes. Made me remember watching Lucy Lawless as Xena. Man she was gorgeous.... You could learn the answers to the universe in those eyes...

I've got only one problem with the demo. What's up with the 2-handed combat? The warrior feels like a rogue on crack that just discovered the 2-hander has no weight whatsoever. 2-handed combat in DAO was way to slow, but in the DA2 demo it looked wacky, and the blows didn't seem to have any extra strength behind them - talking about the normal attacks. That's what I'd expect from a normal one hander! You guys have been watching way too much anime...

I'm sorry if this question has already been answered, but will we be able to enable a DA:O style "auto-attack" on the console version of DA2

Yes.

That's excellent. Will your character just complete basic attacks on an engaged target until you activate an abilty with this option enabled?

This is going to be a story spoiler, so read at your own risk.

I understand that Carver dies if you are a Warrior/Rogue, and Bethany dies if you are a Mage.

Please make this a player choice, other than predetermined by your class. Carver is a whiney little ****, and I should always have the option of him being crushed by an ogre at earliest opportunity.

im also wondering this cuz id rather have bethany live but i think i wanna play as a mage......

So I just played through the 360 demo, waiting for the PC one since that's what I have it pre-ordered for (played DAO and all DLC for PC) and my thoughts are more positive than negative, but a little mixed.

The new combat is amazing. The pace is frantic and makes combat seem a lot more exciting (not that I had an issue with the DAO, it's probably my favorite game of all time.) Like a couple people said, it will take some getting used to the changes, but I think they are for the better. I feel like I've been waiting forever for a fantasy RPG with real time, visceral combat, and this has it. Which is amazing.

The graphics... mmmeeehhh. I love the new art style, but the character models lack detail, and the environments (at least in the demo) are unimpressive. I don't understand how Lothering is suddenly a vast wasteland. Kind of silly. And I don't understand how people are saying the faces and animations are better... I feel like they are the same. One scene the mom did the whole "cardboard cutout putting prayer position hands over face" and I was like ugh. But I will reserve judgement until the full game. The interface is, while very Mass Effect-y, a huge improvement, the level up screens are great.

The sound is kind of meh as well. The music is great, some of the voice acting is amazing (Hawke, Isabella) but the rest is pretty crappy, especially in the longest section of the demo with his family. This paired with the akward movements is hopefully an issue only present in the opening parts. But as with the graphics, we'll see.

So this probaly seems really negative, but it's not lol. The new combat is great, the new interface is great, the music is great, art style great etc.... the graphics and voice work, not so much.

Fortunately I wasn't really worried about the graphics or voice work, I was concerned about the gameplay changes, so the demo eased my mind. I just wasn't blown away as I was maybe expecting.

Can't wait for the actual game to come out, and when the PC version goes live I'll post my thoughts on that if they are any different.

Oh, and I feel like a couple times speech skipped. Like Flemeth said something and before she finished saying it she started saying her next line.

Pretty much everything this guy said (also played on 360). Though, I do feel the character graphics are a huge improvement over Origins, but not as smooth as ME.

And I felt the mage Hawke was ill-equipped to deal with the ogre on Normal without being able to adjust equipment. I get that it was only disabled for the demo, but I know I'm not the only one who almost rage-quit (and I've heard of one or two people that actually did rage-quit) when the ogre killed me the first time. He completely obliterated my team. :(

Which reminds me! There were a few times during the ogre battle that I was clearly out of the way of the charging ogre and/or his hurled rock, yet it still knocked me down. Is there a time during those attack animations which, if you have not already moved, it is a guaranteed hit? To clarify, if you haven't moved out of direct path by the time the rock is above the ogre's head or by the time he grabs onto the ground?  Or can you still move out of range while the rock is in the air or the ogre is rushing toward you? I mean, it appeared as if my character was out of the way, but he still got knocked down and took damage.

I'm playing on the PC.

First of all, I was positively surprised by the combat. I'm one of those who were originally fearing that the game would be "dumbed down" to suit the console crowd. Not saying console players are necessarily "dumber" (I own 2 consoles myself), but there is a tendency to appeal to a... well, different sort of audience on the consoles.

Anyway, I feel the combat was as tactical as ever and the balance between "hack 'n' slash" and "D20-rolls 'n' tactics" felt very well tuned. Perhaps most opponents died a little too easy, but I suppose that's due to this being an early point in the game, as well as the demo being restricted to normal difficulty. At least I hope so.

To those who still criticise the combat for being too "hack 'n' slashy", please remember that better animations and a higher tempo does not necessarily make it less tactical. If you view the game objectively, you'll see that it has a lot of potential for tactical gameplay on higher difficulties and levels.

I'm not too fond of the linearity, but I'm sure that just a limitation in the demo as well. Wouldn't wanna show too much, I guess.

The RP'ing seemed perhaps a bit too defined. You can either be the "Angel", the "Comedian" or the "Bulldozer" in most conversations. Suppose that's the limitations of voice acting, but I still hope it'll be a little more open throughout the game.

And I absolutely loved the new skill system. Much more interesting than the complete linearity of the skill systems in, well, most previous bioware titles. ;)

Also, bonus points for making bows viable.

Interesting demo.

Firstly I'm glad my PC can run it and hope this is indicative of the actual requirements of the game come release. As it is it looks and runs smoothly enough (ignoring the loading issues in the cut scenes and certain transitions that's fixed for final release).

Combat is very flashy, very visual. Although a bit frantic at times I feel but pausing at the right times will help alleviate that. I do miss the overhead camera for the PC though. Not sure of the rogue's fighting style though; some make sense, but overall seems a bit too gung-ho for a rogue.

The art style is fine in and of itself, but I feel somewhat apprehensive about some of the redesigns though. I half expect the Darkspawn to be able to talk when I encountered them. Isabella seems a bit...top heavy to me.

The new talent screen is interesting, and I look forward to the game proper to get into that. The attributes screen is also nice and clear which I think is an improvement to DA's screen.

The tactics screen...may have been a bit buggy, but some of the new settings I anticipate will be really useful.

Looking forward to the actual game now.

My big problem is the voice-acting. It was emotional, and was not wooden or anything like that. It's just that Hawke's voice varied so greatly in each dialogue option, the transition felt forced. I still hold that a voiced protaganist can be roleplayed fine, but only if each dialogue style you choose sounds like the same person saying it. If I play a mainly paragon Shepard, for example, but choose a renegade option, then it just sounds like Shepard is angry, but Hawke sounded so different each time. I played an angry, yet sarcastic Hawke, but sarcastic Hawke sounded so different than when angry, I found I was restricted only to anger if I wanted to come off as a single person. Can someone confirm that this is not a regular occurence, and it was the couple I chose that didn't work?

You know, I noticed the same thing with my female Hawke. I played a mostly 'good' Hawke, but some of the options I was given didn't satisfy me, and so I went with the middle option as default. First time I heard it I was like... "is it a different actress voicing 'sarcastic' Hawke?!" xD

All in all, I still enjoyed the game. I just noticed the exact same thing going from good to sarcastic Hawke.

I also went into it expecting to love it.  In fact, I looked forward to the demo all day.  It got me through grading the stacks of papers I had to grade.  And in the end, I can't really say I was pleased by the demo.

But so it goes.  When people complain, we're accused of "wielding hate swords."  Maybe the people who love it are wielding love b*ners?

Oooo...one question after the demo that I can't recall seeing the answer to elsewhere...

Do we really do the facial customization *after* the exaggerated opening in the full game? It's hardly a dealbreaker, but it does seem a little odd.
