The fighting still feels a little bit off, but still cool. Characters look great, some a little too great ...I think I might take up sailing.
I love the way they are telling/playing the story, and I really like the main character dialoge.
Too bad it was so short, but I guess I can play it again as a warrior and a mage still.
Thanks EA for the teaser/taster, it left me drooling for more, too bad pre-orders didn't ship out before release dates!

These are the thoughts I reached during 2 playthroughs of the demo (male warrior, female mage).
- Text size/formatting too small for an SDTV 4:3 ratio. Seriously, It's next to impossible to see, I have to squint. Perhaps a text formatting option can be added to the menus on a future update? This is a HUGE barrier for me as I really cannot see myself reading any codex entries with this tiny text sizing. I suppose I will have to hook the damn 360 up to my 22 inch monitor.
- When playing through the demo w/ a warrior class, having myself, my brother and Aveline fighting at the same time, if we are positioned correctly, quite literraly 3/4 of the screen (4:3 SDTV) is being taken up by wildly flailing super human sized swords and their speed blur lines trailing behind them. I find this to be hugely visually distracting.
- Where is my "auto attack" option I was promised? Though I'm playing on the 360, I prefer to use the pause/choose attack method of combat for each of my characters (read: no setting tactics, I control all combat actions), and in the interim I'd like for my character to auto attack. Again, I ask how realistic is it that in the middle of a battle, when out of stamina to do anything particularly incredible (it specialty moves), who would
just stand there simply waiting to be hit? Continuing to do a basic attack should be AUTOMATIC!
- Mashing A... really? Who thinks this is fun? Continuously pressing the A button while waiting
for cool downs to end is not a particularly compelling game mechanic.
- Where is my auto target next? When I resign myself to mashing A as the game demands of me and suddenly I am faced with a situation where the enemy Hawke is attacking dies, why doesn't Hawke turn around and continue fighting???? Why am I forced to use the thumbstick to cause to happen what should happen naturally to the character in the context of the situation? Don't get me wrong, I don't want the game to play itself for me but if my attention has waned from the monotony of mashing the A button, the game could at least do me the surface of moving towards the next enemy (as the original DAO did). Sure... it was clumsy and stupid how long it took for my DAO character to close the distance... but at least it made sense!
- The game asks a lot of the player as far as "emotionally buying in" goes. When Carver or Bethany dies, I suppose I am supposed to care right? The Melodrama seems pretty forced upon the player as they have literraly JUST picked up the controller. Considering I am not playing MY character but playing "HAWKE" who is bioware's character, perhaps they should have built up to the drama a little more rather than expecting me to care that the "red shirt" dies. So what if they label him as my "brother".
I have no experience of him as my brother. It would have been more dramatic to not experience the death in the game but have a brief but poigniant sense of mourning portrayed through a flash back cut scene later in the game. They should have simply aluded to the recent death of my brother or sister early in the game.
See, because this is not my character I don't have the same level of emotional investment. I honestly cared more about the death of Aveline's husband than of hawke's (ie: "my") brother.
-No Choice. When you first encounter Varic, the scene jumps are both disorienting and allow for no choice whatsoever as to whether you want anything to do with this guy. No dialogue options are presented... I mean, Varic and Isabella are just IMPOSED on you rather than you deciding to allow them to join you. The game suddenly decides FOR YOU that "you" (ie: Hawke) are going to backup a lady you met only hours earlier in a bar brawl in an alley fight the same night???
You just decide to bring along to this alley fight a dude you met only hours earlier whom you do not know and owes you no loyalty? This series of events make NO SENSE and does not even try to explain itself. It's a situation where the devs have decided, we've created these characters and think they are important or cool so YOU WILL PLAY WITH THEM! Role Playing be damned!
I mean, they don't even let you talk to isabella before you play through the "save isabella's ass" quest. Then DURING said quest, you have no dialogue options but to defend this character that bioware has saddled you with. Then, to further progress this series of events over which I have no input, this character I've been saddled with decides "there is no understanding that can be reached" even though I CHOSE a dialogue path wherein I inidicate I want to be diplomatic (ie: try to work things out). She then proceeds to initiate a fight in which I MUST defend her???
With the above in mind, (ie: the careless disregard for the players experience of the game as a ROLE PLAYING GAME) and the paraphrased dialogue wheel system where, I am sorry... but what hawk says is not what I expect
or could be reasonably inferred by the paraphrase it is clear that this is Dragon effect as many had feared... They are attempting to make a compelling playable movie experience (ie: you sit and watch) rather than a role playing game. I do not think (despite the stats and combat system) this can be properly referred to as a role playing game when so many choices as to who you are (ie: your role, your character) are restricted or predetermined.
Verdict: Dragon Effect will likely sell a million copies to movie goers! Expect Dragon Effect 3: Redragonfied in Q1 2012!
I find it ironic that you complain about a lack of emotional investment on the one hand, but attack the cinematic presentation on the other. A voiced protagonist with facial expressions is much more emotionally engaging than a deadpan, mute character, even IF you got to create them.
Also the Warden was just as much "bioware's character" as Hawke is...the only difference is you don't get to choose one of six origins and one of three races. You still get to customize the look, personality and choices of the character...and if you don't consider that role-playing, AND you don't consider the level-up/skills/combat mechanics role-playing, then what IS? O.o
I think he/she is talking about not having control over your character in many situations. Like fighting for someone you don't even know.

I've been playing the demo since about 1:30 pm eastern time, and so far I love it!
I have to admit though-- I just can't beat the 2nd Ogre that you face-off against.... I can get him down to about half health... But then I just get totally swarmed and overwhelmed. and no matter how I try to stragegize and allocate the 6 health poltices that I have I always get a whoopin'
Can anyone help with this? Any ideas, hints, tips, tricks?
I did it my first time. Hawke takes on the darkspawn and aveline takes on the ogre. Im not sure if the mage lvls before the fight but if she does. give her the heal spell. It should do the trick.
THanks... and so far from what I"ve seen I'm loving all the changes-- Great work Bioware, you guys ROCK!!!

*Aveline's battle animations bugged me. All she did was stab with a shield. Stab. Stab. Stab. Rinse and repeat.
*Cassandra's emotions still feel quite stiff on her face, though I doubt that was what you were trying to communicate.
*Tapping A is one of the least fun things a player will ever be forced to do. No one likes it.
*As an Xbox360 user, it is still annoying to try to find your target in battle when you are a mage or a ranged fighter. There are still problems with general overview, its hard to actually see what the heck is going on. I just wish sometimes there was a birds-eye-view option.
All in all, quite fun, and excited for the game.

I like it. I'm assuming once we get to Kirkwall things speed up or they skipped some content so we can still be surprised. I like this version on the 360 a LOT more than Origins on the 360. Good job.
Combat is great. I had some initial tactics issues when it came to getting heals on my mage. But all in all, good job so far guys. I see lots of fun in the future.
PC version just finished as I type this. So off to try that now.

My only beef with the game for the 360 is the text size. If you don't have a giant TV that's about 36" or bigger, it is really hard to read any text what-so-ever on the screen. Might have to download PC demo and see if it is better, just might switch my pre-order to PC.

Don't really like how most of the returning characters from DA:O look completely different. Of course they look better, but it ruins the continuity of the game. Considering the game will be released pretty soon...I doubt any criticisms mentioned in this thread will have any affect on the end product we'll be playing with.

- abilities work well
- stat effects are clearly defined
- visually stunning
- Bethany's chest size in Varric's exaggerated tale becomes more reasonable in the actual
tale which brought a chuckle.
Disliked: - button-mashing feel
- frantic combat and targetting slips off targets too easily
Overall, pretty darn fun.

Watch the credits under Extras, we got a nice "ending song" again, just like in ME1 with the Faunts.

The user interface, while sleek, is also a bit difficult to read as the information doesn't readily pop up on the screen like it does in the first game so you can know what you're clicking on. Makes trying to do talents and spells through the combat HUD a lot more difficult than it should be.
Other than that, I loved it.

[This demo] + [a few minutes playing it] = Just take all my money, I don't even care. As long as I leave with this game in my hands.

I really liked the demo so far except for one major thing: I can't access the isometric view (PC).
Is it because it has been removed from the actual game or is it just a demo issue?
Removed.
Well that sucks...

Isabela went from looking like Jennifer Garner in origins to i dunno .... she looks more likely to smother you between her ( @ ) ( @ ) than throw a dagger at you ;p
will be playing as other classes but so far imho i'd give the demo 6/10

- Bethany and ladyhawke's voice, Bethany sounds very cute, it fits her, and ladyhawke sounds femenine, yay!
- Combat is much more fun! although IA has a terrible spell aim for moving targets.
- Spanish translation, so far, so good!
- Flemeth, I want to look like her when I get that old.
- Overall, it was great, can't wait for the full game.. except for the..
Things I don't like:
- Ladyhawke's armor is ugly and bulky as hell (she's not supposed to be a boy!) while bethany's and isabella's looks great, I'd pay for a nice looking starting armor! pleaaaaseee.
- Was those muscles on rogue ladyhawke's arms really needed? ugly, don't like at all!
- Rogue's default fighting stance looks... funny.. it's as if she's trying to dance a "sevillana" or maybe some flamenco. The rest of the fighting looks cool.. the stance nop, silly stance.
- Game crashes with alt+tab if it's combat-paused, otherwise it doesn't, odd.
- Archery stance looks forced and uglier than in origins, a step in the wrong direction.

Does it skip the story so much in the real game or was that just for the demo?
The texture and colours of the hair were TERRIBLE. The voice acting made me want to get sick it was so bad and there was no emotion on characters faces. Also old people, (women especially) bodies look to young. When you see Hawkes mother she has the face of a 60 year old and the body of a 20 year old supermodel (its the same with Flemeth too!). Apart from that the demo was great and I enjoyed it.
It also never said anything about the free unlockable item for completing the demo.

"will the constant cutscenes with the dwarf(talking to the chantry lady) be in the final game too?"
they are not that hesitating but I cant say I enjoy them they rather ruin the whole 'sucking in' progess for me.
anyway about the game: I really hope the higher diffuculty levels will be like dragon age 1. I can still remenber being stuck for an day at the last phase of deeproad in dragon age 1(I really did enjoy this. Nightmare should be hard like it says. This demo just didn't give me that satisfied feeling which completing hard stages in dragon age 1 did). overall the whole demo seemed like some mindless hack and slash action, and I have games like dante's inferno for that:P
it's also a shame that some features have been cutted out, like the whole upper tactical view. Please dont go backward on quality like alot of great games did. Bioware still seems like one of the devolpers which cares for the community I really hope that can stay that way.
edit:
Some further explaination regarding the cutscenes:
all the cutscenes just make me feel like I'm not in control anymore. Its not me saying I'm going there, no its the dwarf saying it. this is what bothers me about this, let the dwarf talk about the great things I have done later on but not meanwhile I'm doing it. I gues I just really prefer an chronology story, but I gues thats an oppion.
Thanks for reading,
amohell
