Only gripe- Character creation starts AFTER the exaggerated portion in the beginning? That's a bit odd and almost feels like the default Hawke is pushed on us (much like Sheploo). Is that just a demo thing or do we go from default Hawke to character creation? If that's so that's a bit...odd.

I wondered about that too. I think it may, if it is in the actual game, just be part of Varic's made up version of the story. He xaggerated everything else so I guess Bioware could get away with it by making it seem like he's encouraging his lie by misdescribing Hawke.

I totally forgot this. I really hope that in the full game "cooling down" will be much faster.

I thought I'd be able to keep Carver and Aveline alive on my mage playthrough. Alas, I had to kill the darkspawn alone, because of that damn cool down...Posted Image

I enjoyed the demo and my first BW game was NWN and the expansion packs for it.  Also played KOTOR ME 1 and 2 and DA:O.

As a slight aside, I saw yesterday lots of people complaining about the darkspawn exploding in the first combat section, and the rush in which you pick up Varric and Isabela and start her mission.  I can't be the only one who thinks that the first fight is like that on purpose because Varric is embelishing the story, and that the rush when you get to Kirkwall is  because they didnt include everything in the demo? I loved the demo, i've been replaying it non-stop since yesterday. All of teh calsses seem evenly dsirable, although teh mage still wins in my opinion. I just wish you got to keep bethany when you play as a mage.

I've played the demo almost three times (had to stop playing while in Kirkwall at one point), twice on the X360 and once on the PS3. Although I'm a bit of a PS3 fanboy, I felt the PS3 had much longer load times and was a bit more laggy when switching between combat and cutscenes. When the customize appearance was loading for such a long time on the PS3 I almost thought it had crashed.

Despite my DA:O/DA:A/Witch hunt save on the PS3 I'm pretty sure I'll get this for X360.

I just finished the demo... holy ****!

First of all the combat is just plainly boring. I knew it won't be anything that requires thinking but this one is even more boring than in DAO. Dialogues are horrible. Worse than in DAO. Music is ****, graphic is just laughable. There is no singe pro of that game. It's just ****. Good thing they put up a demo because now I know to not bother with DA2. I mean DAO was semi-good. It had filler combat, it had overdone violence, it had many other drawbacks... but at least dialogues were okay and there were some choices with some consequences from time to time. The game was rather good until Deep Roads. But DA2? Now, THIS IS ****.

I'll just won't bother with writing more about it in details... it's not worth it.

I loved the demo. I really enjoyed the changes made to the game from Origins.

The combat was awesome and even though it had the appearance of being fast paced I still had to pause and issue orders to get the most out of characters.

I also liked the change in the dialogue. The way the options are presented to you is an improvement over the traditional way that was used in Origins. Knowing what tone your character is going to use when saying something is awesome.

So far I also like the changes made to spells and the option to upgrade them.

I did have a graphical problem with the blood in cutscenes though. The blood on characters would quickly appear and reapear constantly. I would rather play with it off though anyways.

Overall I am very, very happy with demo and I like the changes and am looking foward to the full game.

Yes. Played BG,TOTSC,BG II, TOB,KOTOR,JE,NWN, NWN SOU, NWN HOTU,ME,ME II,DAO, DAO A

I played a mage and the demo played very similar to DAO -- just more stylish. I paused, I cast spells -- combat was fun. (I will be playing the game on Nightmare once it comes out for friendly fire)

I'm also 44 married with 4 kids and have a University education.

It's easy to toss someone with different tastes than yours into a demographic.  However different people, like different things.

This. All of this. Except I'm 36, with 2 kids. Almost exclusively PC player. Loved the demo, apart from a couple of minor niggles.

WTF Dragon Age has turned into a console button masher. Dumbed down for the masses. Exploding enemies, unrealistic speeds, interface geared for Game pads. Basically Devil May Cry in drarf armour . As a PC gamer, lover of DAO and Bioware Fan — I AM GUTTED and will not be buying this rubbish.  :(

why did they release a demo with so many "bugs" then say they are already fixed in the release version. The hell is that?

The demo is based on an older build of the game. Likely they didn't have the resources to spare to correct all the minor bugs in it before releasing it.

Yes, many others (including myself) had issues with the sound in the demo. Check This Thread for more detail.

IN the pc version, it seems like I attack faster when I keep right clicking on the enemy. Is there any truth to this or is it all in my mind? If you're not sure don't just tell me know, go start it up and see for yourself.

OMG!!! THE PS3 DEMO WAS AWESOME!!! Thank you BioWare for keeping my hopes alive!! I played it on both my pc and ps3 and i liked the pc, but the ps3... WOW!!! i really felt like i was playing at home you know, that familiar feeling. I didn't feel weird at all with the new system or anything. The look and feel was there all along BioWare. Lets get that million downloads y'all!!!

No one's going to read through 130 pages, so excuse me if this has been posted before.

I noticed that when you're auto-attacking and then use a special move (Mighty Blow, for example) Hawke stops auto-attacking AND won't pursue the target. I liken the mechanic to Shield Bash from DAO, where the warrior would follow the prone enemy and continue his attack. I hope this change wasn't intentional and that it will be corrected in the regular game.

there is potential for the full game from the demo- its just the god awful hack and slash combat- might be a lot better in main game as you open up more options, will still be getting the full game. but from the demo would say its a 6.5/10. hope the full game improves my score.

Well it's official, consoles still bloody from the mutilation of RTS game's move over to RPG's who they have already severely beaten to take a massive turd on they're beautiful head. Am I being melodramatic? I don't know, is there ever going to be a Neverwinter Nights again? Or do we have to put up with this faff. Biowares games have become less and less interesting with every game they release.

Neverwinter Nights>Neverwinter Nights 2>Mass Effect>Dragon Age>Mass Effect 2>Dragon Age 2

And who want's to bet that Mass Effect 3 will be a joke? I remember hearing that it's going to be more light hearted. If you find a flaming bag of poo on your doorstep light hearted then hardifrigginha Bioware thank you you cold dead gaming god.

I love how you, PC Gamers, cry about consoles. It's pathetic, and funny at the same time.

I play both PC and console games and I LOVE them both. It's when a PC game that I love is moved to console and completely ruined that I have a reason to complain. You know the majority of PC gamers aren't frothing nerds angry at consoles for the death of computer games, they actually grew up playing consoles. I don't mind these button bashing, over the top games but if I wanted that I'd go play Dynasty Warriors. If I want a game which has interesting combat and dialogue it looks like I'll have to go back to playing Biowares old games because I won't find that in any of the new ones.

I actually found this demo to be less button bashy that DA:O, i found myself being more tactical whereas in Origins I tended to bash buttons more.

I assure you, on PC it was physically impossible to button bash in DA:O. Unlike this where I could literally ignore my party and bash the number buttons in any fight which wasn't a designated hard fight.....

Background:

* I finished Dragon Age: Origins (once), Mass Effect (several times) and Mass Effect 2 (several times).

* I played the Dragon Age II demo twice. Once as a male warrior. Then as a female rogue. Both times I ended up fleeing from the ogre as the sister/Bethany Hawke (and ultimately killing it after some Benny Hill-style antics).

Platform/Hardware:

* Xbox 360

* 720p TV

Liked:

#1 More colorful characters and environments (than DAO). I share similar "What happened to Lotherin Countryside?" sentiments as other commentators but that's not a huge deal, especially since characters like Flemeth have also been significantly "re-imagined".

#2 The Player speaks! But see below...

Disliked:

#3 The dialogue is weak and/or delivered badly. If you're going to write a really hammy/cliché line then at least have it spoken with some mustache-twirling gusto. Neither the male nor female Player voice feels as strong as the Mass Effect actors. The sister/Bethany Hawke, mother and male Player Hawke seemed especially poor. (Isabela didn't seem good either but I could have been jaded by the time she was introduced. Isabela's character model and animation didn't help - see below). Flemeth also has some questionable lines but she carries her script a little better.

#4 The facial animation is unconvincing (especially compared to Mass Effect). Also the cut-scene animation seems off e.g. Isablea invites the Player back to her room for "extra services" (IF YOU KNOW WHAT I AM SAYING...jeez) or whatever the innuendo was, but she tuns her back to the Player as she says this?

#5 The in-game conversation is weak. (and why don't companions turn to look at the Player when they speak?)

#6 You meet the Player's sister/Bethany Hawke, mother, and Flemeth. You think boobs could not get any bigger/more ridiculous. Then you meet Isabela...

#7 @hotapplepie made a good point about emotional investment in brother/Carver Hawke and templar deaths. I didn't care either. (Given other comments about the death of the sister/Bethany Hawke, I understand that the former is probably just to balance the melee/ranged group specialization).

Suspicious of:

#8 Inventory micro-management was a huge time sink in the original. Being unable to try it in the demo makes me wary.

Overall:

Issues #3, #4, and #8 above are enough to make me reconsider my pre-order (even though it's only $40 through Amazon). If I cannot enjoy the dialogue, and inventory management is still too time-consuming, I will not enjoy Dragon Age II.

Thank you for reading.

I used right mouse button to move the
camera, as I do in all games like this. Guild Wars for lack of a better
example has the same move scheme, A and D to turn, Q and E to
strafe.

Right mouse is also used for attack and movement. I haven't tried with that method, but I have a feeling it would only make me more frustrated. I'll give it a shot though. I'll try anything, if it has a possibility of making it better.

What I meant was just that, that's how I move the camera, and it works much better than using A and D. On the topic of clicking to target enemies, I found it annoying because sometimes they are hard to click. The solution to this which I found in the controls in the options menu, is pressing R to target nearest enemy. makes combat MUCH easier and arguably more fun.

The Art directions seems fine to me, the first part was obviously Varric's embelishment, and who's to say the rest wasn't too?

I suppose you don't know anyone with large breasts? They do happen you know,I mean genetically not surgically.

Hawke is a warrior, by which I mean a person trained to fight, they don't have a tendancy to scream and panic at the mere sight of an enemyl even if they felt panic they'd try to keep it under control.

We didn't get to see too much of Isabella, but it's not unheard of for a women to be sexually liberated and to go after what she wants.

Dragonage, whilst a great game, did have a few issues, the Fade being one of them.

I don't know where Bioware is heading to ....

1. Art and presentation - its fine however it reminds KOTOR spartan design which is so suitable for Star Wars universe but it completely does not fit to fantasy RPG which we can associate with the Middle Ages. I know we can't simply compare many years long work on DA:O, where we can see small details everywhere (more like Baldur's Gate) and very simple art "design" in DA2. It's just too empty, clean and shallow. The brutality presented in the game is very forced and sometimes completely inappropriate. You should not force it for all the cost, it wasn't really necessary.

2. Animation and combat - animations are fine, well made, nothing really what we can discuss about. Only the problem what I can see is how they're made in gameplay point of view. They're too fast and so player can hardly enjoy the move. As I understand the speed will fix many blends issues but I can easily imagine, it could be made better. It is very hard to notice fast combat moves, especially on PC where we do not have right distance from LCD display and also the display is not so huge like ordinary TV. I have no idea what QA in Bioware did but this should be noted as main flaw, especially for PC platform. "Bird's eye" view camera would definately help for having better overview about battlefield. I was often confused when I was shifted elsewhere.

3. Sound and music - great indeed. Bioware sound engineers and musicians know how it should look like.

4. Story - there wasn't nearly anything said in the demo. Only a few bits regarding connection to DA:O and information about well known characters (King Cailan, Flemeth, main hero from DA:O, etc). Of course, and notice about where they are heading to plus small bit in the town.

If I only rate this demo, I'll give 6/10. However, in case the story will be great, it can be raised to 8/10 but not more.
I believe that oversimplifying is just wrong and whole game industry is taking this route for quite a time. Are we as players so stupid that we can't handle more difficult controls, game mechanics and so on? Why are we getting all nearly instantly? I do not really understand that. Are we not able to handle games like Baldur's Gate? I'm really looking forward when "fast food" philosophy disappears. I hate to have everything nearly immediately, without any effort, its just killing me.

I will give DA2 a try but in case the story is bad, the game will slowly descent to abyss like Mass Effect 2 which were again oversimplified against Mass Effect 1. I don't care about profit (I know it is important!) but I do not believe when things are made more complex that they cannot be sold. I'm not looking for hardcore game, I'm looking for something where I can use my brain slightly more.

I love the demo. I played it on my PS3.

The one bad thing that I noticed is that Aveline had a habbit of getting stuck on same attack animation so you would get the same stab, stab, stab, motion which really distracted from what was happening. I know that my friend who played the 360 demo had the same happen to him.

maybe she had her shield up.when shield defense is active,i think her action animation is always stab.
