First impressions form the X360, poor. Very poor. In my opinion, the only decent bit of voice acting was Kate Mulgrew which was wonderful. The rest lacked soul or any sort of quality I expect from Bioware. I think perhaps the most shocking part, I don't even believe I am here writing this, but the writing, for the bits you selected in the demo, are substandard compared to previous Bioware outings.
Perhaps I care little for any of the characters becuase it was just a demo. I had what half an hour to get used to what was on offer. But 100% of any character is how well written they are and how good the voice actor is. I can't say I give two monkeys about Hawke either at this moment in time. Who the hell is he? Why should I care? Why do I need to be simply a Champion when I just led a country to defeat a Blight? I've just saved Ferelden with my Gray Warden and a party that consisted of arguably the most joyfully written and almost perfect/imperfect characters? What has happened here? I go from a singing Orlesian bard to Isabella who has snot on her bottom lip and talks like a muppet.
Why have you insisted Bioware on breaking up the flow of gameplay with cuts to the dwarf telling a story? Is this what I have to look forward to? It happened in ME2 with the end of mission brief. Breaks things up. I personally don't like that. I didn't think it was going to be that invasive. I thought maybe at the start, it would be "It started like this..."
Dragon Age for me was and is perhaps quite simply the greatest game I have ever played. Any RPG before and everything that comes after must be compared to that game. Graphically, it was not awesome, but as is always the case, that doesn't matter as long as it plays well, the story is good, and I enjoy it. Perhaps DA:O spoiled me a little by giving me the origins stories, which, imo, was an excellent way of bedding in to your character. I knew why I was important. I knew why I had to go through the Joining, all as a result of the origins introduction.
Change is good, but what works with Mass Effect, does not with Dragon Age. Mass Effect 2 was Mass of War 2, Dragon Age 2 is Dragon Effect 2, which I guess must mean its Dragon Effect of War 2. Now all I need is a cover system.
It now makes me wonder how big an influence EA are having on Bioware and what concessions Bioware made by getting into bed with them. At this stage, I think I would have rathered Bioware pucker up to Bill Gates and Microsoft, rather than Ray and Greg get into bed with a guy who spent years making Ice Cream and Pepsi rather than video games. But, alas, money makes the world go round.
But oh how I will eat my words if the full game is better than the first. However, I doubt that very much. You cannot go from 5-6 years development, to 1 year and what, 5/6 months and expect the same level of brilliance.
Sorry Bioware, but I am so very badly disappointed you have messed around with something close to perfection by doing what you have done. I wonder how much a hand EA had in doing so.
