This has been covered before, seems to be one of the more common complaints among the PC-format users, but the camera zoom range in the demo is really terrible. I both can not zoom out enough during combat and also can not get the directly over the shoulder view that actually lets me see where I'm going when not in combat. Having spent most of DAO in one of these two views, I will be extremely disappointed if we're stuck with the demo's camera restrictions in the actual game.

Edit: The issue I ran into seems to be a bug that cleared itself up the next time I played the demo. After playing around with some video settings, the vertical lock I seemed to have had disappeared and I was able to pan the camera much more in line with DAO. Since my game crashed (locked on a pause) later, I'm assuming there are just some bugs in the demo that will get patched later and I retract my complaint about the gameplay.

no kidding.

I do respect the posts that dislike the demo and had stated civil opinions of it (rare posts)

I was a fan of the ME1 and ME2 dialogue wheel, I was in general optimistic about it's implementation in DA2, but as others have pointed out the voice acting between the different types of choices is very inconsistent.. it's sounds like a different person between the peaceful, sarcastic and harsh responses... it's over done, I'm really very surprised no one at Bioware caught this.

So you want the even drone of the ME voice actors do you? Many many people have complained about that. Personally I tried a variety of responses and none made me think it was a differenty person, its came across to me as Hawke's emotions changing depending on the situation.

are the combat animations... The first time through I was too busy button mashing on my warrior to get too upset by the fire shooting out of my feet and my character being tractor beamed to the fray like I was playing Street Fighter, or heaven forbid Final Fantasy... the mage on my third play through was even worse, what happened to a high fantasy flavour imbued by the mage tower? Now we have baton twirling teenie boppers where we once has brave souls who interfaced with the fade... it's quite sad, to have such a great unique IP penetrated by such common japan-amation themes. Big blue eyes and and bangs across them... . I don't mind some of it, I get it, the need to appeal to a broad based audience, Flemeth's new look doesn't bother me so much.. but overall if this is what's meant by a "new artistic direction" I think it's overdone, too drastic a move, in my opinion... why be like every other RPG maker out there when you could be unique, why give up a style that was uniquely Bioware?

The tactical element is still there and may be even better than in DAO despite the greater flash.

As I mentioned above, I'm an old gamer whose played all the Infinity games and still have them all on my computer.  I still enjoy them, but I would be disappointed if they were released today.  I loved the Witcher too and can't wait for the second one.  It's ok to like different games for what they bring to the table - To me, Bioware is a storyteller and I have yet to be let down by that - I can't think of a Bioware release where there wasn't some issue I had with the gameplay.  I don't need nor want every game to be hardcore old school RPG.

I think the point is though, there are alot of games in the action/rpg mold, there are very few - if any - old school
CRPG in the mold of Baldur's gate being released.  I don't have any problems with action RPGs, but there's alot of those games out there. It's just unfortunate that we'lll likely not see a new RPG in the vein of Baldur's Gate again.

Fair enough.  But, I have a feeling that DA2 is going to be a lot closer to peoples expectations when played at the higher difficulties.  DAO was silly easy on Normal mode as well where there was no need to utilize your party.

If you're playing on PC use the right button to rotate to teh exact view you want.

First impressions (PC demo):

(1) Combat is fun, but *way* too fast. Characters and enemies almost teleport across the screen. Fighting animations are ricidulous and tactics don't exist if you can't block enemies. Just the same as in DAO - the hordes can and will pass your warriors by to fall upon your mages. Most disappointing.

(2) The dreaded perspective problem is not as bad as feared, but still present. You cannot zoom out as far as in DAO. So far it's bearable, though, and doesn't hamper gameplay.

(3) Ability use appears to have a bigger effect than in DAO. Nice.

(4) Heal needs a slowerfaster cooldown. (oops)

(5) Graphics are very, very disappointing. Mostly because textures lack details and models are too low-res. I'm using the highest settings the demo lets me use (DX11, 1920x1200, high details) and it still looks like a five-year-old game. It doesn't bother me that much, but it is disappointing. I expected better from a game published in 2011.

(6) Who the hell made Isabela's body model? Is she supposed to be attractive with those giant boobs?

(7) The @%&!$ dialogue wheel. I hate it in ME, I hate it in ME2, I hate it in DA2. I wonder who thought that thing up. I want to know what I'm saying!!! The icons are useful for conveying a mood, but I want to know what I'm talking *about*.

So far, the good thing is the combat, except for its speed. Dialogue itself is OK so far except for the effects of the wheel. VA on male Hawke is good, on female Hawke not so much. Graphics is very bad. All in all, a mixed impression. The end result will depend on the story, the writing and dialogue scenes.

RPG=Role Playing Game lemme see not number crunching game that would be an ncg. This bull about the way of rpgs or jrpgs and the new is destroying it is simply in your minds.Mass Effect,Dragon age and fallout represent that defintion of role playing better than say FF series for eg. if you don't like it dont pays ya money!

Go play Halo

Actually he is right.

There seems to be this notion that an RPG must revolve around numbers, loot and 'open choice' (do anything you like ala oblivion) due to western RPGs pretty much coming straight from DnD, but they only used numbers in DnD as it was the only mechanic available to tell the story and combat through.

That does not have to happen in video games since computers allow us to introduce a lot better mechanics to deal with anything we come across be it dialogue, crafting, combat etc which are actually more interesting in nature rather than a lucky roll.

RPGs at their core are about story and the player using their choices to move the story along.  Bioware seems to understand this very well, and are evolving that priniciple with making choices throughout a series matter by having us import our old choices which then effect the next chapter of a story.

If you want to live in the past then please go live back in the 80s and 90s and play games restricted by the numbers mindset but the future of RPGs belongs to games that can craft their stories, combat and any other system through more interesting means rather than a dice roll.

I have played pretty much every RPG put out by bioware, and then before that I played games like Eye of the Beholder and the old EGA games like pool of radiance.  My shelves are full of RPGs and the most engrossing and compelling out of them all are Mass Effect 2 and now looks to be Dragon Age 2 which have moved the art of story telling with game worlds where choice actually matters forward.

The demo was fantastic and I have pre-ordered the game.

I though combat took too long and was very boring with how normal darkspawn had mountains of HP, however I imagine playing on Easy or Casual will fix that. Other then that, as a woman I dont mind the big breasts, i've known plenty of women for real with even bigger racks then Isabella. Besides, since DA 1 shes been a sexpot, its her character or did the threesome and foursomes in DA 1 with her not give this away to some people?

Well, I rather think hard or nightmare will fix the fight to be over within a minute...

I think it is going to be a fine game.

Don't get me wrong, I KNOW it is going to be less rpg.

All the people saying it is so much good than DAO because the voice...so what? can't they put voice in DAO? there are lots of origins...too many voices... Well, in DAO everybody sounded the same, from the elf to the dwarven, so you can choose your origin but the voice is girl or guy. And all the "mute" problem is gonne. "But now the elves are from Wales" ...and dwarvens are from Tumbuktu. That's new, it will improve the overall ambientation but we can say male Shepard is canadian and female is not. Perhaps that dwarven or elf you play with the same voice as the human as the same reason as that person whose parents are from very far speaks your language fluently and without any accent, because he grow up there. The Mass Effect system does its work but as a "succesor" of Baldurs and blahblahblah feels a little like cutting content. (and i love ME)

In Pc, the combat feels almost like DAO. Almost. It is faster and very fluently which is to thank Bioware, perhaps a bit too fast so you can get lost of what it is really happening, but overall, very rewarding. Archery...love it. Everything looks fine, for PC. I don't know for consoles.

You can't choose race...well, speaking in silver, it is a regression. I may accept that it may enhaced the overall history but lets be clear, when you go to a restaurant, what is better, if it has one and only one thing, or has several? And event more, it is only 3 races, 4 if you "add" wizards. We are not speaking of a Neverwintern style anymore. DAO had only 3. If you take those 3 and and cut in in the third part, it is going to be always worse. Regardless the history could be better if you can only pick one and that's subjective.

The graphics does its job also. A rpg like this doen't need to be an Oblivion or a Witcher (which I will play when Skyrim and Witcher2 are release). Smoother than DAO, perhaps it is still abusing of the straight things, in middle age, if something was that straight without any "imperfection" would be high class (look at that candelabrum in the begining) But much more fancy and I can't wait to see it at DX11.

I can't speak anymore because you can't see more in the little demo.

It is going to be a fine game. Very good indeed. And I have reserved since January and will buy it.

But all in all, it has a little loses for the rpg mechanics. It is not bad because it is aimed to a bigger mass but for the original "market" which DAO was supossed to be it is a little of; again, regression.

Good job, I hope this game and will be waiting to see your next work.

I prefer to play for fun too but that isn't the goal of all gamers for a game like this. Some want immersion and that is not "doing it wrong", it's preference.

Tomato, tomahto.

I'm pretty sure the people who want immersion want immersion because they find it compelling and...well, fun.  Honestly, if folks are playing games for immersion and then DON'T find immersion fun, I'd suggest they find a new hobby.

I found the demo to be pretty awesome on the PC.

It plays exactly like Origins except faster in speed and lack of top view camera, which I can live with.

I am a little split about the demo so far, but I have only tried it on the 360 and I didnt like how DA 1 handled on consoles, so I will wait till I play the full game on the pc till I really make up my mind. Bioware has not let me down yet.

Anyway I like the new art style, and the graphics do look a bit smoother. But I don't like the way the health bars and stuff have been implemented. It looks a bit arcade like to me.

As for the combat, that also feels a bit more arcade like and less tactical. But considering I have only played a demo I will reserve judgement until I get to experience the full game. I'm hoping I'm just finding it jarring with it being so different and new, and that I will get use to it.

Loved the combat, loved the characters (even Isabella wasn't as annoying as I though she would be, which is great).
Didn't like the dialogs. Absolutely hated loading times and lags. I sometimes thought that my PS3 had frozen - and i'm not talking about inter-map loading screens - just the quick loading inbetween combat/cutscene or cutscene/cutscene. Fix it, Bioware.

I had a lot of fun with the demo. I was a bit concerned that the combat from the PC version of DA was going to be abandoned but I was pleasantly surprised it was for the most part in tact. And I was really surprised at how much I enjoyed playing as a rogue.

That said, I am really disappointed at the way woman are really over-sexualized. It just comes off as incredibly pandering and frankly embarrassing. Was it necessary to the lore that the protagonist's mother had a huge, prominent rack?

These games never have been about immersion. That's why, per deffinition, they re more storytelling then RPG. People looking for immersion should look for firstperso games with non discript heroes... like Elder Scrolls.

I actually love the new UI style. Very modern and minimalist. However, the Tactics screen needs a revamp. I also feel like they are very limited, like in DA:O.

Jennifer Hale never sounded like a drone and managed to capture emotion while doing paragon, renegade or neutral choices without ever sounding like a totally different person. Sadly whoever did Lady Hawke seems to change her voice quite a lot between the three choices so the dialog doesn't sound as natural when changing between different choices like they did in Mass effect.

Hmm... I've played it through a couple of times more now, and I seem to have some trouble aiming with the area-effect spells. If there is an enemy in the way of the targeting reticle, the reticle simply turns grey and won't let me cast the spell.

I guess it sucks for the people that don't like DA2. I mean they waited all this time fot the game and now they don't like what they see. Oh well. The fact is you can't please everybody. Just like ME2 had it's naysayers, this game will be a critical and commercial success and all of us that can appreciate this game for what it is can enjoy the game for ourselves while all the whiners sulk to themselves because Bioware didn't personally go to each and everyone of them and cater the game to their exact tastes. Sucks to be them....:P
