Also, complaining about the demo being on rails....that's BioWare for you. ME was on rails, DAO was on rails, KOTOR was on rails. People should expect by now that BioWare RPG's have that in common with JRPG's. It's not a bad thing though as it allows for better storytelling. When I want an open world, I go to Bethesda.

what have u done bioware what have you done? I cant actually believe just how much you have dumbed this down, almost every aspect of this game has been made worse. the deep, interesting and involving dialog of origins is gone replaced by mass effects ****ty wheel so now if we want to be good all we have to do is make sure we always pick the upper right choice so mindless and dumb just one of the many things wrong with this demo
i am not a hardcore RPG fan but i loved origins and the choices we had to make and also the combat wasnt too bad it involved strategy now the combat is just a button mashing mess, i dont know how one of my favorite developers could have ****ed up this bad
i will not be buying your game bioware nor will i be convincing anyone else to either. it seems to me your going down the same path as square enix and final fantasy so sad.
You summed up my feelings perfectly.

RPGs at their core are about story and the player using their choices to move the story along.
Respectfully, this isn't how I've ever approached RPGs. My character's choices were what she would choose. It could be that it moved the story along, but that wasn't my primary motivator for what I chose. I know its a subtle difference in point of view on these things, but its beginning to make a big difference in gameplay.
If you want to live in the past then please go live back in the 80s and 90s and play games restricted by the numbers mindset but the future of RPGs belongs to games that can craft their stories, combat and any other system through more interesting means rather than a dice roll.
Since you have a long history of gaming, you should realize that action video games (yes, even action RPGs) have existed in parallel with rules/diced based RPGs since pixels existed. It isn't some sort of new innovation, and suggestions about it being about progress are, sorry, poppycock. It's about a certain playstyle that has managed to live in parallel for decades being eliminated in favor of another.

I am just curious, is there a reason DX10 is ignored? The game has either DX9 or DX11 so with my card (9600 GT) I guess I am stuck with DX9 since my card only supports DX10 or lower.

Currently, only DX9 is supported anyway. You are not able to play it in DX11. We do not know yet what the final version will support.

Wondering if anyone else is in this position: the demo isn't even close to what I'd hoped for. However, for RPGs, the field is pretty thin -- so I'm gonna be keeping my pre-order as a result. I am disappointed in what Bioware chose to make, but I suspect I'll probably enjoy the game even if it isn't particularly close to what I'd wanted it to be. I'll just have to treat it as a Mass Effect style game instead of what I was truly hoping it'd be. Sure, it's still probably going to be fun, just... not what it could have been.
So, anyone else the same?

When you're controlling a character, yes. Otherwise they'll auto attack and do what your tactics tell them to. So instead of watching you character hit, you press a button - or switch over to another character and use their abilities, while to one on cooldown does auto-attacks.Balvale wrote...
Quick question: A friend told be that you need to use the A-button for each attack in the 360 version. Is that true? I downloaded the PC demo because I only have a silver live account at the moment.

Yes we do, the development team have stated that whilst the demo doesnt support DX11 the full game will support it fully.

-Combat. I played as a mage, and holy crap do those animations look cool. However, there were a lot of things wrong about combat too, namely trying to swallow a potion. My face was being restructured by 6 or so darkspawn, and Hawke's auto-attack kept interrupting the health pot. And not just him, but also the butch-but-apparently-not-lesbian tank woman and Hawke's brother had this prob too.
Auto-attack also interrupts me trying to perform skills, and AoE spells (like Fireball and Firestorm) have to be targeted at the ground, while in DA:O they could be targeted at both the ground and targets. The current system is very annoying when trying to land a spell in the middle of a group of enemies.
-The beginning. The made-up story was great, felt really powerful. But apart from that the beginning felt really boring mostly because the area was very bland. Personally I prefer the DA:O beginning(s), because that way you create your own backstory (and not just talk about what you supposedly did and how you grew up).
A few points of criticism which are a bit more specific: Someone (or something) could've warned me my 'sister' was about to get murdered the moment I gave her the healing ability instead of myself so I could focus on damage, you know. This is obviously only for mages.
Also, demo not allowing us to modify our appearance is understandable... But not allowing us to equip different gear? What the hell?

I'm pretty sure the people who want immersion want immersion because they find it compelling and...well, fun. Honestly, if folks are playing games for immersion and then DON'T find immersion fun, I'd suggest they find a new hobby.
I like to play for an hour or so in the evening. Then I heard this strange noise in the game (DA:O Orzamaar) It was my alarm clock!
That's immersion for me.

DX11 is DX10 more precisely DX11 is backward compatible, but the demo is NOT FULLY UTILIZING IT AS SOME FEATURES WERE BUGGYGarak2 wrote...

You will, however, be able to toggle auto-attack on consoles in the full version, so you don't have to hit the button for every attack if you don't wish to.

First, the new menues are bland and extremely lack-luster. The style of DAO were wonderful to me as they reminded me of my days huddled around a table looking at my paper charecter sheet. I know to some newer gamer that seems dated and archaic, but they are fond memories from my childhood.
Second, the in game menues had very little style and were not "genre oriented" like in the first. I admit this does give it a cleaner look, but in my opinion there should have been a better mix of minimalizm and style.
Next, I agree with the people that stated that there should have been more choices as to race and origin stories to match. That is one of the reasons I so very much loved DAO. The one feature I commented to all of my friends about was the differing origin stories. It is also what made me play through the game so many times. I am afraid I will lose interest in DA2 much quicker as I will not want to explore the new and unknown of the different races/origins.
Lastly, I was not very impressed by the combat styles and animations as they made the game seem like an archade game. The sight of the charecters spinning and jumping around during combat seems like what you would see on Saturday morning kids shows.
In conclusion, Bioware may get my money this time but if ME3 and/or DA3 are similar to this demo, it will be the last money they ever get from me.

Yeah, but we only see the rippling six-packs when they take off their clothes. They aren't there in our face each time a conversation launches.
Its not a perfect-analogue, and there never will be a perfect analogue. There is more then one thing to point out:
1) Every single guy in the game has a six-pack. Not some... Not most... Every single one of them. A full 100% of them. Only some of the women have huge breasts (i'd say the ratio actually fits the real world where I live-eastern europe). There is however no country in the world where 100% of the men have a perfectly chiselled six-pack year-round
2) The bulging biceps are in our face all the time. In every single battle, move, conversation etc. Why do so many of the male characters walk around in sleeveless outfits by default? (you can say armor covers that up, but it also covers up breasts, look at default clothing when you meet them). All these guys with huge bulging 25inch pumped up biceps (do they do bicep curls right before they meet you?)
A quick google image search shows hawke being curiously being most often sleeveless (while still having gloves). Is that not showing off the cartoonish 25inch pumped up biceps?
