Ok, just finished playing.  Overall my first impression was I liked the demo.  Battles are really fast paced.  I really liked this.  I was a bit disappointed in not being allowed access to the inventory screen and seeing how that works.  I played as a Lady Hawke her being a rogue.  Wow, loved it.  I loved her eyes as the default.  Also, love the armor that I'm seeing.

The story has great hooks in it.  I've already got about 10 questions I want answered from the character conversations.

Flemeth was awesome.  I so want her armor (hint).   I can't wait for more.

Ok, now for what I didn't like.  I really, really, really don't like the camera view -- hate it.  I really miss being able to pan that camera around to see my environment.  I miss the top down view.  Harder to find enemies and seeing what is around me.  I guess this is where the auto attack will come in.  If you guys are going to change the art direction and environment, it's sad that we can't see it with this lack of the camera view.  I have to give a D for effort on this.  I understand the need for improvement on the consoles, but the camera in the PC version was fine the way it was.

Also, as my character was twirling around the camera lost total control and keep going around in circles.  I couldn't stop it.  I as the player had no control over it.  Also, another D on lack of control over the camera.   This is happening when using the rogue backstab.

I don't like the character icons, go back to the circles please.  I also miss the medival look of the UI, the new design is nice and it works great, just needs that medival look and feel to it.  This isn't ME2 or ME3.

I miss the inventory icons that were so nice looking.  The new ones are so generic looking.

I guess when we hook up with Isabela is kinda showing us a time jump perhaps?

Also, love the flask bombs for rogues, that is awesome to watch my rogue kick them up in the air.  Love that and Isabella's knife throw was just awesome.

I'm still looking forward to playing on March 8.

Also, had difficulty getting the demo to install, but I did finally manage.  Demo is also disconnecting from EA servers and I'm unable to unlock the special item.

Why you guys didn't have the demo ready and released before the game went gold is beyond me.  I've already seen on the boards issues with the camera and connection issues with the servers.  This would have given you guys more time for tweeks.  Just sayin.

OK just finished my first play through of the demo (360) and I've got some questions and observations:

1: I'm assuming from the way the demo jumped around story/time wise that BioWare have cut quite a bit out of the game/story line for the demo, in order to show later parts of the game (cough Isabelle cough) and that's why you also suddenly jump in levels? Because otherwise the introduction of new party members, and story/character development felt rushed and choppy in places. DAO and ME2 were a welcome return to form in this regard and I would be sad to see an increase in streamlining in these areas.

2: How on earth have BioWare not managed to improve the prerecorded video quality from DA/Jade Empire? There's so much macro blocking and noise it's frankly a disgrace. They're recording directly from the engine so there's no digital to analog conversion. The only source of it I can think of (because it doesn't look like intentionally added grain, at least to me) is from massive amounts of compression? Which given how cheap DVD's are to manufacture seems really, really silly to me. It spoils the look, presentation and feel of the cut scenes and just looks cheap. All that time and money spent by digital artists to make the characters and environments look as good as possible only for it all to be undermined by poor encoding & compression. I've seen better digital video encoding on home made youtube videos. It's a real contrast compared to how good the in game real time dialog and cut scenes can look.

3: Combats OK, I prefer something more strategic in my RPG's but what's here is perfectly fun and expectable. The controls/button layout could be better but it's usable. It still baffles me after the first Fable and Zelda OOT laid down almost perfect templates on how to make 3D melee combat work, that developers can struggle this much to implement a really good combat system (the combat system in the 1st Fable is still vastly better than any other I've yet used, for real time combat/hack and slash).

4: The graphical user interface made too much use of large bold yellow text and icons, at least on the 360, it just felt too heavy handed and intrusive. That's purely an aesthetic complaint.

Overall though I liked the look of the game, though I felt the 360 looked like it was struggling at times. The NPC's seem less like the stereotypes that DAO used which is good, it's great to see isabella make a return, though EA or whoever seems to have insisted on sexing her up even more, to a rather over the top extent *rolls eyes* (honestly less can be more guys ;) ). I've got nothing against them putting sexual content in the game. In fact I'd be in favor of BioWare including increasingly detailed and realistic character development and relationships. But given the uproar around Mass Effect in america there are certain things they are not going to include/show. So some elements just seem a little hypocritical to me ;) . The story seems really interesting, so I guess yet again I'm going to be shopping around for pre-orders.

played on ps3 and took five tries to get past ogre battle lol and i love it. things i loved most were lady hawke has a voice and all three classes are more fun to play especially the mage. only thing had trouble with was while my lady hawke was moving around outside of combat she was running kind of slow but the demo was fun otherwise glad i preordered.

I found the demo pleasing though a few things were off. The new combat system I do like but like others before, it could be slightly slowed down a little more, just is a little to fast. Also with the hilts of the two handed swords, they're somewhat to long, I mean I know it's suppose to fit two hands but you coud also fit a third if that was humanly possible. So they can be shortened as well. The dialogue was okay though not as much emotion as i thought there would of been though that's mainly with the demo, so no clue if it'll be different with the game. The load is slightly longer then I had expected but I can live with that. I like the new colors, it still has that dark fantasy feel but also with lighter colors which at time DA:O lacked slightly.

All in all the demo is good and satisfying while I wait for the full game to come out in a few weeks time.

If DA2 is anything like the demo, its pretty bad.

Combat is too flashy and way too easy. Its been covered before by other poster... if I wanted to play God of War and pawning everything insight with my giant 2H "sword"... I would play God of war.

Rogue is jumping around like ninja or asian marital artist on crack... again if I wanted to play japanese anime style, teleporting ninja... I would actually play those

Mage is ridiculously easy... fireball into group... repeat... yeah that's gonna be fun :P

Worst of all, female toon walking animation looks retarded... especially if you're playing a warrior female toon with plate armor and walking like a model... sasheying left and right like she's got a hip problem?

Voice for female Hawk is TERRIBLE. I mean its only slight better than when Madonna went through her "British" phase... some lines were passable while some lines were like? "Where exactly are you from, why are you butchering British accent?"

DAO was stretching it a bit but DA2 is completely ridiculous. In DAO, you fight 6-12 enemy at one time... but now in DA 2, you can take down 15-20+ darkspawn at every encounter!? You freaking BLOW up darkspawn with ONE ARROW!? Maybe myth buster should do an episode on how much actual force is required to blow up a body? I'm sure one arrow is enough (sarcastic option... fyi)

My only gripe with it is the UI.

The game is supposed to be a fantasy game and yet the UI looks like it fits in more of a modern/futuristic setting.

For those who feel that combat is too fast, I strongly suggest a mage. I know it's not the ideal solution if you really, really like swinging sharp objects, but it's definitely the right choice if you prefer to make fewer, slower, more impactful tactical decisions rather than many, faster, more interchangeable ones.

I'll give it a shot.

Anyway, the combat is too fast. I can't really tell what's going on and because of that I can't tell any difference when I raise my stats.

Also, about the sexist BS. Maybe they should stop putting women in games, it seems that no matter how women are portrayed people whine and complain. Of course, if they took women out people would complain about that too.

that's exactly what I said! regarding women that is. People will find women in video games sexist no matter what the video game makers do. People play the sexist card so much it doesn't even mean anything anymore...Posted Image

Err, are you sure you actually understand what is meant by sexist ? Having women appear in video games certainly doesnt fit that definition.

What it should mean seems to have very little bearing on how people employ it, and I'm pretty sure that's their point.

Why are the breasts so big? You trying to objectify women? THATS SEXIST!

Why are the women so flat? You trying to make them more like the men? THAT'S SEXIST (and/or gay)!

Why are most of the women mages? You saying they're weaker? THAT'S SEXIST!

Why are most of the mages men? You saying women aren't as smart? THAT'S SEXIST!

Why is that armor so revealing? Put on some ****ing clothes. THAT'S SEXIST!

Why is that armor so concealing? You guys transitioning to Sharia? THAT'S SEXIST!

Why are none of the ‘spokespeople’ women if so much of the team is female? I don't want to hear that the producers and designers are mostly men because you hire on credentials rather than to meet a 50/50 sex distribution ratio in every department to avoid appearing sexist. THAT'S SEXIST!

You guys hire to meet a 50/50 sex distribution ratio in every department to avoid appearing sexist? THAT'S SEXIST!

Again, folks. Breast size discussion. Cut it out.

Hmm, is not a discussion about why this game sadly slavishly continues the trend of hypersexualising female characters ( by way of giving them large breast sizes ) in games ( in a way that male characters are not hypersexualised ) a valid discussion to have ?

That discussion is not sexist surely ?

And that the only spokespersons we have seen or heard for the game ( designers, writers etc ) are men ? Perhaps that hints at why games still can't break that particular sexist design cycle.

Since they like to make things big, why not making males like this in DA3:

If Hawke had a weapon like that no ogre would stand a chance.

My reactions. Plus signs (+) are positives, minus signs (-) are negatives.

General comments:
- The first area in the demo felt really linear. Hopefully this was an anomaly; the town was much better.
- Buggy. Really buggy. Definitely not release quality.

Design:
+ Overall, a nice, cohesive feel.
+ New mage staff models! OMG! <3
- Animations feel jerky. I think this is a stylistic change, which is okay, but ...
- Mage fire is a strange whitish, yellow-orange. That'd be okay, except it's VERY bright: combined with the jerky animations, this causes some eye strain when you're fighting a monster as a melee class. It's like your party's mage is a disco fanatic, because it looks nothing more like a strobe flash every few seconds.
- BUG: The bow, when equipped on the rogue, clipped inside the character model's shoulder when running. Expected behavior is that weapons don't clip the model ... well, at least not so obviously.

Combat:
+ Feels much faster-paced than DAO, but with just the right amount of strategy.
+ More use of abilities rather than mostly auto-attacking.
- AI targeting for AOE spells is awful. The mage in your party consistently targets the ground where monsters used to be, which means she regularly hits absolutely nothing with her fireball.
- Having to constantly retarget using the mouse. Perhaps I missed this in the options somewhere, but hitting Tab to target the nearest enemy (and then cycle through visible enemies) would make the game much more fun.
- The mage Heal spell has an inordinately long cooldown (60 seconds). This makes it very difficult to play as a supportive and useful member of the party when your one restorative ability can't be used anywhere near as often as it's needed.
- BUG: Twice, I was unable to complete the demo because the game crashed after I paused combat repeatedly during a single fight. I'm not sure what the exact cause is, but a very similar bug was in DAO. Expected behavior is that this bug finally gets fixed, because crashing (and the resulting data loss!) is just not acceptable.
- BUG: Pausing combat, assigning a given party member to drink a health potion, then switching to another character before resuming combat would ALWAYS result in that party member not actually drinking the potion, but instead continuing to attack monsters. Expected behavior is that your party members follow your assigned orders, rather than dying ignominiously because they're too hardcore to drink potions when not manually forced to do so.

Interface:
+ Text is much more readable than DAO.
+ Ability descriptions are significantly more informative than DAO.
- Some UI elements (particularly scrollbars) are virtually impossible to see because of low contrast (example: tactics UI. Or maybe scrollbars were just missing there ...)
- BUG: When attempting to set tactics, the mouse would only highlight a clickable item in two very small areas of the larger 'button' that were otherwise indistinguishable. Expected behavior is that the entire button is actually highlighted, and clickable, over any part of the button region.
- BUG: When attempting to set tactics, as soon as I finished selecting a condition, then attempted to start setting an action, the condition I'd just set would immediately change to something random. Expected behavior is that this entire mess actually works; I was never able to actually set or modify a tactic.
- BUG: When a party member leveled up, clicking the left side of their portrait brought me to the level up screen, but the right side just switched to them. There was no line of demarcation between the two sides, which was confusing. Expected behavior would be to simply go to the level up screen when clicking anywhere on the portrait while out of combat.
- BUG: When clicking a party member who had just leveled to go to the level up screen, I was instead shown Hawke's stats. Subsequently clicking anywhere on the screen -- like, say, on that party member's portrait again -- always dismissed the level up screen. Expected behavior would be to (a) show the initially clicked party member's stats when bringing up the level up screen, and (B) switch to the clicked party member when their portrait is clicked on the level up screen.

It's a good start, but I really hope these get fixed before launch ...

I played the game a few more times. I still hate the camera. At first it was disappointment at how far you can pull the camera back. After a few more plays, it is really annoying watching the camera flop around, roll and end up looking at the ground every other time you do a backstab, a big leap forward maneuver or just run too close to a building, rock or barrel.

Combined with the clunky camera is the fact that I cannot choose a party member and have them target an enemy or move, without the camera zooming to their perspective, and therefore needing adjusted again when return to my main character.

I would have preferred some sort of option, where hitting a function key onces highlights that party slot for orders. Hitting it twice takes the camera to them.  If I am missing this option, I'm fine being corrected. For example if my character is melee fighting an ogre, is there a way to select my mage, have her cast haste, without the camera having to zoom across the screen and readjust itself, when all you really want to do it give a .5 second spell cast order and resume with your melee character?

Much like several Bioware games in the past, I can tell a lot of the reviews are going to bring back similar reviews of NWN and NWN2, where one of the major nitpicks was that you fight the camera more than you do the enemies. How did this happen? I never noticed the camera being annoying enough to remember in three  DA1 playthroughs, yet in DA2, a 15 minute demo has me frustrated and praying that the old toolset works well enough that some modders will fix this.

Closely tied with the camera troubles is the fast combat. People were hopping around so much, so many flashes, whizbangs and camera spinning, that I often lost track of where my characters were. I found that the speed made the game less actiony for me. I was hitting pause and cycling through my character more often than I did in DA1. But not to give them orders, just to try and figure out where they were and what they were doing.

All of these dislikes of mine could have been fixed by a camera that zoomed out far enough to see better, and far enough out that leaping forward didn't cause a disorienting spin of the camera every couple seconds. I know, dead horse:(

-I liked the skill trees set up
-the new way stats work might create more interesting builds that Max a single primary stat
-the little interaction we had with companions, seems like it will be interesting
-graphics seem ok, but I don't really notice graphics too much after I spend time with a game I like
-Flemeths return was cool
-Maybe too many cutscenes.  It felt like everytime I got control of the character for 15 seconds, there was a cutscene or a Varric scene rushing you along. It kind of felt like I wasn't really playing, I was just being plopped down into small combat arena, then pulled back out of character as I watched other people talk about me. Its hard to explain, it just felt wierd. I'm sure this is just due to cutting out all the in between things we do in during the demos time span?

Seems like a fun game, but I have to say Bioware doesn't know the term middle ground:) Critics say combat a bit slow? WELL ZOOM CRASH BANG WE'LL FIX THAT! X10!

Just curious, when someone at the office says" turn the TV up a bit, I can't hear it". Do you crank it to 11?

Most PC gamers have been horribly burned by dumbed down consol-adapted sequels before. Deus Ex 2 is the classical example. That's why we're apprehensive about it.

Ok, I can understand that you expect a different gameplay experience on the PC than you would find on your console counter-part. This game was designed for consoles, so I guess it makes sense that PC gamers aren't warming up to it.

Honestly, I think that's just because it's so clean. I think we've come to expect very noisy UI of medieval fantasy games because we expect them to be composed of wood/stone textures with baroquely detailed embellishments of all kinds.

I really like the feel of the game. I was a huge rogue fan in Origins but i must say warrior is catching my eye. The whole game just plays and looks so smooth. From what I've read on here is mostly non-sense. Really people, do you honestly want to play a game that is real, play the Sims then. I don't play this game hoping that my character is going to do things that i could with a sword; i am going to play this game because i would love to swing a sword and just DESTORY somebody. And about the actions being too fast, i would rather be button mashing "A" then just tipping "A" and watching my character swing as if it was batting practice.

This game is going to be one of the best RPG games of the year. Bioware wouldn't downgrade from something like Mass Effect. I think they did this game all the way correct and if it meant something and actually made sense to do I would buy this game several different times because it's going to be that good.

What looses a lot of RPG character of the game is the decision wheel. I already dislike not knowing what I answer :-(.

You know what type of response you'll make and have some idea of what you'll say.

Yeah, didn't work for me, because in several instances, the response I clicked on wasn't anything like what I heard. For example, when Carver died, I chose "He's not alone" I didn't know that was the "charming" option, and I'm not sure how it's appropriate to respond in a "charming" manner when talking to your mother about your dead sibling, but the actual response spoken by the character was "Well, at least Father won't be alone." The tone was rather snarky--although it was hard for me to hear any emotion in F!Hawke's VA--and was totally not what I meant; I was thinking more "He's not alone because he'll go to the Maker's side", something that's actually consoling. Had I seen the full response, I would have chosen a different option.

Charming means pleasing, and in the game's usage it means that you're trying to please her and give her some sort of comfort. and I don't know why you thought it was snarky. It sounded sad, but at the same time there was a slight joy in what Hawke said.

It didn't sound that way to me--but again, I wasn't getting much emotion from F!Hawke. The actual line was jarring because it didn't sound real comforting to me. "Charming", to me, implies exactly that: you're trying to seduce or persuade someone, not comfort them.

That was the most egregious example, but there were several other instances where there was a real disconnect for me between the paraphrase and the spoken response. I had this problem in "Leliana's Song", so it doesn't surprise me, and I realize nothing will change at this point, but I figured it was worth giving the feedback that the dialogue system doesn't work for everyone, and may well prove to be a game-breaker for me.

there's usually more definitions to a word than what people are used to associating with it. I realize that some people won't like it, but I think those people and i'm not saying you are among them, just dislike it because they can dislike it. They're not doing any real thinking

I considered writing some kind of thousand word essay about my thoughts on the demo, but given the length of this thread it would clearly just get lost in the shuffle.

What I will say is that my thoughts on it as a sequel to Dragon Age: Origins are different to my thoughts on it in and of itself.

As a sequel to DA:O it is rather disappointing, most of the flavour of that game does seem to have been lost, at least in the portion of Dragon Age II that we saw. If you changed the music, the spell names and the enemy types there wouldn't really be anything left to connect the two.

Judged on its own merits, I think the demo can be seen as far more promising. Apart from some bugs, such as party members being unwilling to move after dialogue (hopefully these have been corrected by now), I found that the actual mechanics work pretty well and I can't imagine that the full game doesn't have plenty of points of interest that we currently know nothing about. I suspect that this is primarily a "tech demo" displaying said game mechanics and not a demonstration of a typical half hour's game content.

Bear in mind that if you had played a DA:O demo consisting entirely of the Korcari Wilds and your first dialogue with Sten you probably have not been too impressed with that either.

My major gripe is with the camera view. When zoomed in it felt like I was just looking at the back of Hawke's head and when zoomed out it was similar just less so. Overall the quasi-top-down made it hard to see where I was going--in fact it made it look like Hawke was running around just looking at the ground (Shepard tended to do this a bit in ME2 but a quick sprint would fix it).

Other than that I loved the demo. Am thinking about playing through again to how, if at all, Bethany's death is different, but the battles were great. This might have been due to the camera view, but I especially loved focusing on my part of the battle and suddenly seeing a flaming darkspawn come flying into the frame due to one of my party member's independent attacks.

Great job BioWare and can't wait for the full game!

NO. Disappointed Xbox player here!
Believe it or not, but I very much dislike the current fancy for epilepsy inducing crazy combat coolness, washed down with mind-numbingly stupid plots and character interaction. And I've outgrown my love for JRPGs and do not like DA2 looking like one. Oh, and I hate the gaudy interface. And I hate the dialogue wheel....

Ok, so I've played the demo several times now on my PC (AMD X3 720, 5770), so here are my impressions:

Its not bad, its not great either. It does some stuff well and it does some stuff not so well. In short, it seemed there was some good stuff going on, but it was very rough around the edges. I'm likely going to list a whole bunch of more negatives than positives, but I did enjoy the demo overall.
========================================================================

The GOOD:

* The graphics - Overall they were much better than the screens would have you believe. Performance was mostly ok, even on the DX11 renderer for me, and I loved the cloud shadows. The lighting in particular was a vast improvement overall from Origins. And having seen some of the DX11 and high res texture shots from today, I'm hopeful.

* Flemeth- Its Flemeth. Come on. The highlight of the demo really. I liked how the old Korcari Wilds music struck up when she appeared too. I did very much like her quip about Morrigan in there too.:wizard:

* Speed- The combat is indeed faster, which I did not mind that much. Its not perfect but the idea behind closing moves and such are nice, even if visually I don't like how it translates. Functionally, the speed is good.

Some of the animations-  Generally, I enjoyed playing as a warrior or mage much more than rogue. The actual animations for most of the moves aren't too bad, although the transitions between moves is often jerky and the actual animations for the closing moves are too over the top for my taste.

* Oh, and I loved the floating ash/sparks in the Lothering bit- that was a nice touch.

*Explanations! I loved how the abilities and everything are detailed and explained much better.

*The 2D cutscenes/loading screens- I sort of like the style in Origins 2D intros more, but they're a stylish and neat touch in DA2.

*Archery sound effects- The sound effects for archery had a very satisfying sort of "twang" to it. Sadly, the bows still lack bowstrings and now seem to lack quivers and occasionally arrows...

*Closing moves- Specifically, as a concept they're great. Functionally, they work great most of the time (the DW rogue has a tendency to dance, or dare I say, shuffle over to the target if selected at range. Animation wise? Meh...again, too over the top and comical for my taste.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

The NEUTRAL:

*The dialogue wheel:
Eh, it worked ok. My preference is the silent PC with loads of non combat skills and speech checks and full text, but thats obviously not happening. There were times I had little idea what Hawke would say based on the paraphrases and not knowing the difference between angry fist and hammer and anvil, but it was ok. It makes for a far less immersive experience IMO, as the PC becomes just another NPC but it was serviceable in the demo.

I'll wait and see how it goes over the course of a whole game, but even in the demo there were times Hawke said something in full text that (IMO) didn't match up what I thought he'd say or the tone was off. Really, a full text option, even at the expense of a "cinematic experience"  would alleviate so many of my issues with the voiced PC.

My issue is that when trying to RP and take various choices from between the tones, Hawke sounds like a nut. He's too holier than thou with the diplomacy and gritting his teeth in aggressive and clownish in sarcasm. You try them out and it makes for a bizarre time.

*The framed narrative: Could turn out neat. Or it could turn out to really be intrusive and break any flow. Time will tell.

*The Combat-

Its very much like Origins, yet changed enough so that its at the same time different. I do not care for many of the over the top animations, especially the rogue. The rogue just too often gets stuck in geometry and does weird stuff when you try to, say backstab when the enemy has their back to the wall or you jump out of somewhere and end up hitting some invisible barrier. The animations seem very herky jerky and lack a sense of fluidity and momentum. Better than Origins in some respects, but too often combat visually turns into something that looks like it would induce a seizure.

The problem is that at least playing through the demo several times, the combat gets pretty boring, pretty quick when you have to either mindlessly slam the R key or pause and micromanage your dumb as rocks party members because the Tactics menu is broken. Hopefully the encounter design is a bit more varied over the course of the full game.

But, functionally, in spite of the animations, combat works well.....mostly. The camera and AOE's are another issue (see below).

------------------------------------------------------------------

The BAD
(Some of these are mostly benign nitpicks likely isolated to the demo or just random issues but I'll put them here anyway)

*The skies are still the same bland overcast as Origins.

* Wesley is bugged out and mute when you try to click on him.

* The bodies magically sink down into the ground and leave nicely stacked coins and treasure? Is there at least a Call of Duty like option to leave bodies and decals on the screen for a time?

* Why XP all after the battle instead of showing it per enemy?

* I don't care for how the quick bar cannot collapse anymore and how you're stuck with it spanning the length of the screen.

* The overall PC interface (Tactics menu included):
This is a biggy. The entire PC version subjectively feels like a console port. From the "Press any key to start" on the opening menu, to the Tactics screen. I know that supposedly the Tactics bugging out has been fixed, but even just how much screen space it takes up regardless of resolution: you can only click on one condition at a time and can't see the entirety of what you're selecting like Origins, so its less user friendly in terms of seeing what exactly you're setting.

Compare Origins tactics menu where you have the expanded menus and can see whats going on while in DA2 you have to use the arrows and only see one condition at a time:

Its the lack of the little things in terms of mouse and keyboard functionality and utilizing a PC monitor's screen space that really disappoints me. Even the radial menu on the pause screen- come on, when you're porting something over to the PC, at least try to make it not look like a console port.

The mouse and keyboard controls and clicking on things just does not feel very crisp and responsive. It feels sluggish- and thats nothing to do with any sensitivity. Its really, really disappointing considering that especially in an RPG you spend a good chunk of time in the menus and the menus in DA2 do not feel at all designed for functionality on a PC- they seem like they were designed to be best navigated with a controller.

* Along the lines of the UI, the portraits- clicking on them is a total crap shoot. Especially when leveling up- sometimes they respond, sometimes it does nothing or sends you to a different character. You click on Aveline to level up and it sends you to Bethany.

* The overall art style- yeah, I don't care much for the Power Rangers Putty Chalkspawn and Flemeth's get up is a tad ridiculous. Not to mention Isabela's chest having its own gravitational field. It all looks comical, which in conjunction with the over the top animations, especially the rogue, makes me laugh at things more often than not.

* Pressing the tab key no longer brings up the enemy names or mini health bar. Thats really annoying in terms of trying to figure out who should be targeted next in combat, you know have to mouse over to see the health of the enemy.

* The menu colors- this is a nitpick, but for me at least, the dark orange text on black background isn't the easiest to read.

* What happpened to the full party selection button?

* The faces- Ok, generally they look pretty good, but what is up with the buggy eyes? I hope this is just an issue with the demo build, but Cassandra and Isabela in particular have eyes that almost seem to clip out of their head on occassion. And the lip sync was definitely off in places.  And they had nubby scary teeth- I don't know if thats better or worse than dirty corn kernel teeth from Origins.

Basically, I don't think Hawke's face should look like this:

* Female Running- Awesome that they have their own animation rigs and their walking is ok, if a bit over the top hip swaying stripper walk (see Flemeth's stroll and subsequent hand on hip runway pose). But the running animation when they don't have a weapon equipped is bizarre- its like their hips are gyrating and their wrists go limp with them seemingly gliding along, so it gives the impression they're some sort of sexed up T-Rex on ice skates.

* Healing is Busted- Or at least seems rather worthless now seeing as its stuck with the prolonged timer. And with the quick heal, that seems to be on a cooldown timer as well, but maybe I'm dense, how can you tell how long it takes before you can use it again?

* The sound effects- This isn't really a negative, but they sound very flimsy and shrill, IMO. The fireball no longer has that satisfying bass to it but sounds rather weak. And the mage basic attack is all pew pew laser sounding. I've got a good audio setup but everything just lacked any "oomph." Stuff like the ogre plodding up the hill should have been beefy and heavy with some bass and it felt empty- maybe thats a demo issue.

* The Mass Effect Cinematic Approach:
This is another biggy. I don't know how well it works in DA2 given the technology. You have all these close ups and zooms, yet instead of increasing the emotion in the scenes, it often just highlights blocky textures or clipping in armor or animations. Basically, Mass Effect did it better. It just doesn't seem to put the engine and everything in the best light as character movements and such still feel rather stiff.

*The Combat Encounters-  "Another Wave!" *groan* I hope in game things aren't as boring. Simply having one wave plus elite/Boss guy plus some archers, toss on another wave  coming from behind when boss guy goes to 50% HP, got old in the demo.

* Numbers on the dialogue wheel? Is there any way to have the numbers visible on the dialogue choices?

* THE CAMERA and AOE's:

It sucks.

Compared to Origins, its a step down in every single way imaginable. You can't even get in close to take as good screens now since the camera is centered about 2 feet above Hawke's head. What happened to:

I have always felt that the key to tactical play was actually freeing  your camera from the character you're controlling to issue precise  orders, which is what we're tuning now. So, this means you can still  maneuver the camera around the battlefield and issue orders from a  remote location, just as you could in Origins.

I know things change and all, but its a joke to try and pass off the DA2 PC cam as even having anywhere near the functionality or flexibility as Origins' camera. Never mind the iso view, you can't even zoom out as far or detach it at all from the selected character.

This becomes an issue when trying to at all accurately target AOE's at any distance, especially on uneven terrain and especially since you cannot lock on to an individual enemy. Add in the waves that spawn out of thin air behind you and the camera quickly becomes the biggest enemy in the game. Which is such a damn shame.

* Cutscene, battle, cutscene, battle...:

In general, I dislike too many cutscenes in games where control is taken away from the player. To be honest, they're often boring. In the demo, too often it was start/stop/start/stop with no flow at all. You'd get some combat, hit a cutscene, rinse and repeat. The transitions just were not smooth between combat and cutscene, even beyond the reported glitchy loading, but just in terms of the music cutting in and out abruptly or having you sibling smashed by the ogre in the cutscene and then magically stand up and fall down when the in game combat starts. Its all those little rough edges that sully the overall experience when taken as a whole.

* No non combat skills
: To be expected, but still disappointing. The whole encounter with Isabela and that Hayder(?) in the Chantry was the perfect time to toss in a Speech Check or some sort of persuade/intimidate type dialogue option. But no, we're subjected to a Michael Bay slo-mo dagger toss. Ugh.

* Finishing moves? The BG2 style instagib gore explosion was ok, but where did the nice finishing moves go?

* Party Member Stupidity- In part this is due to me giving up on trying to navigate and set tactics, but dammit Bethany, don't run right into a horde of darkspawn to launch a fireball on yourself. And again, maybe its the AOE targeting, but without locking on with AOE's it would seem party members like Bethany using fireball have TERRIBLE aim. Seriously, its almost worthless when she almost never hits a target thats moving at all.

==================================================================

So, I think thats it. Overall its not a terrible abomination nor is it as overall as good as Origins, I'd say. Mostly, my disappointment is in how many little problems exist in the demo, anyone not terrible on its own, but taken together, they do sour the overall experience on the PC. It just feels like a mediocre console port job at times, especially in the menus and overall feel of the game in terms of how certain things like the Tactics menu or camera were designed.

Its really just lacking polish and seems very rough around the edges as a PC game taking advantage of the PC as a platform. Which compared to how at home DAO felt on the PC, is a big disappointment.

Is it safe to say that it is primarily PC gamers that are disappointed with the DAII demo?

I was very happy with the PC demo.

I played a few minutes of the comic-con demo last summer and the part with the Ogre seemed a little familiar.

But with DX11 and SSAO enabled, at high settings, 1920x1080 looked gorgeous projected huge on my wall using an HD projector. The textures seem to be a bit higher resolution than DA1.

Loved the character design, art direction and most importantly, brilliant dialogue and outstanding voice performances.

I was very impressed with the way the dev team managed to optimize the graphics so that I was able to get pretty high frame rates even playing on a laptop at 1920x1080 with Radeon HD5830M video card. The only area where the frame rate dropped a bit was after Flemeth changed back into human form when there were still flames on the ground. But even then, it looked gorgeous.

I played Fem Hawke mage and Man Hawke rogue. Great performances by both voice actors, and very well done character faces. The actress who played Flemeth was incredible, as is Flemeth's character design.

Both times I went for 100% pausing, micromanaging every combat action. I disabled all the tactics for all the followers. Otherwise it might have felt more like watching a movie than actually playing the game.

Both classes were great fun to play, especially the rogue. The guy hops all over the place. Not sure if the cooldowns were adjusted to make the demo easier, but it seemed that you could hit the backstab every few seconds, teleporting back and forth until they go down.
