Dragon Age 2 Demo feedback thread

The graphics look smoother. It isn't a huge leap in terms of graphical quality, but it was enough.
I really loved the quality of voice acting, especially Aveline for some reason.
I didn't like how restrictive the camera angles were in the demo though, even in the PC version. I'm hoping this will change in the actual game.
The bugs in the demo weren't completely gamebreaking, but annoying. Mainly the whole tactics menu, and characters failling to follow tactics properly (such as my mage using Mind Blast when there was no one around him). Also, when clicking on characters' portraits when trying to level them out, I get randomly tossed out of the menu. I'm randomly unable to access potions on the quick bar at all.
So yeah, that's what I thought of the demo. Main gripes were all the bugs and the camera.

Liked:
- The style of the character models was nice.
- Kirkwall seemed very pretty.
- The storytelling mechanic was interesting, especially the "embellishments".
- The skill trees are kind of cool.
Neutral
- The Mass Effect dialogue wheel is ok.
Hated
- Combat way to fast and became a button masher. I can see having to put it down often to avoid carpal tunnel.
- Every move over the top and flashy. When every single attack is flashy and spectacular, it quickly loses it "wow" and becomes mundane.
- The speed of everyone flying around and jumbling up often left me wondering what was going on. At times it felt like watching an ant swarm.
- Hitting things felt very shallow. There was no feeling of impact, just swing, swing, swing with no real effect.
Overall
While the new look I found agreeable, the combat has severely diminished the enthusiasm I had for Dragon Age II. I am a sad panda.

For some of the demo? Squee! For other parts? Grumble.
The voice audio was probably the best example of a high school play soundboard I've heard in years! For the serious, I couldn't hear the voice acting whatsoever no matter how I adjusted the audio settings. I had to turn on subtitles to just catch what was going on - and it wasn't simply absent. It jerked wildly from difficult to hear to occasionally shoutingly loud, scaring my husband and freaking my cat right out of my lap.
I did like the music a lot, but I can't really comment much on the voice acting as I could almost never hear it.
Playing the rogue in combat is like trying to wash a spider monkey. For the Maker's sakers, she was all over the place. I had to pause to designate targets at ALL times. Luckily, I didn't pay for all of my chair - BECAUSE I ONLY NEEDED THE EDGE.
The warrior was fine. Another standard Thunk-Thunk-Whack-Bonk fighter. I named him .Thumpdarr, the Bland.
The running female character model was weird - she appeared to be floating in slow motion as she ran, out of combat. I felt like I was watching 'Ye Olde Baywatch - Ferelden Nights.'
The graphics looked much cleaner, but they had a slightly toony look to them. I like the old look better, but that is just a personal preference. Also, it appears Skeletor's extended family seems to have invaded Ferelden thinly disguised as hurlocks. "Skeletor to Archdemon, Skeletor to Archdemon, come in you royal boob!"
Kate Mulgrew was fantastic, however. She really knocked it out of the park. THIS made the demo worthwhile for me! Great work on her part. I'm sure glad she remembered who Flemmeth was because I sure didn't recognize her! How she went from hag to Frank Frazetta pinup I will never know.
The user interface is a little too futuristic for me... I'm not trying to vent plasma from the warp nacelles, I'm just trying to make my rogue do stabbies.
With the demo I feel I'm getting an abundance of hacky slashy console game with a small side order of role play. I miss the role playing. I'm a freak in that I don't always want to play a human. I'm one of those weirdos who likes to break things up by doing something crazy like conversing with my comrades and not being surprised by what comes out of my character's mouth when he/she speaks.
I'm old... I like reading text, I'm not into wheels.
Overall, I don't feel this is a bad game, but it didn't blow me away or anything.

Am I the only one completely baffled how anyone can be rating this as "the best", unless they don't know Bioware's history back when they weren't with EA (which should make things better as they have more money now)...?
I'm just not sure.
And that horrible off colored ultra-repetitive fire is just sickening and everywhere... it literally makes me want to tint the screen.
Not one time did I say it was the best. I said it has the potential, and that we'll just have to wait until the game comes out. I'm well aware of the fact that BioWare has made some great games before EA. And yes, the fire is annoying now that I think about it.

I realize the thread is 175 pages in, so it's totally possible that nobody will read this. Still, I wanted to say my piece about the demo. : ) Specifically, I've played it through SIX TIMES already... and I think I feel a seventh coming on soon.
I just love everything about the combat. Some people are saying things like "how is mashing X fun", but I think it's really just about perfect. There's still the same delicious tactical choices that we had in DA: O, but in-between we're lacerating enemies with what would ordinarily be auto-attacks. I love it! It's invigorating, and makes me feel like I have much more control over the fight. Between choosing which abilities to use, how to position my characters, and now the basic attack combos, it's really exciting.
The best part is there's essentially five combat styles - sword/shield, 2hand sword, daggers, archer, and mage. So you can't even have every combat style at once! I guess you can switch in the inventory during combat, but assuming you want certain characters to stick with certain roles, it's really diverse.
I really can't get enough of it. I keep playing through as different classes, going with different builds. I just love it sooo much. I think my favorite build was when I made hawke a 2h warrior and bethany a hardcore elementalist build. The carnage was just nuts. : D
All in all, the combat in this game is what I wanted DA:O to be like, and I'm soooooo happy right now! My only regret is that we didn't get a combat system like this for DA:O - I played through all six origins to see what they were like, and by the fourth one I was getting a little bored of the combat. If I'd had this combat system I would've been like WHOOO!!!!
Also, I'm playing as Fem Hawke. She's sooooo cute : DDDD <3

****The Good:
-- battle is just spectacular, fully real-time, dynamic and spatial sensitive. is just great. The animation make you feel the potency of movements, which lacked in DOA. All 4 classes look promising, i think ill play all.
-- The new graphics style art is a step forward from DOA. I really like the new fashion of the darkspawn, now Bioware has redefined them so they look unique for their lore. and i like the style they put with their weapons and angled armors. About quality, lets say that it is ok for now, i cannot say much until i test it in full dx11 at maximum settings.
-- View Distance graphics is better, on first level, even when is a basic landscape, notice the distance of the scenario, that really gives me the impresion that something big is happening and a big story is behind. Feels good running on far distant landscapes.
-- The user Interface, is so basic that i love it. I can just see everything i need and focus on the game.
-- Sound and Music do justice to the fights. Maybe some recordings of Hawke could have been a little better, with a little more of emotion.
****What i would like to be improved:
-- running animations mixed with rotations or terrain variations seem a little low quality, i wish they can improve them.
-- For some reason, Anisotropic filtering is working a little unoptimized, the difference from 0 to 2x is huge, and going to 4x or 8x cuts down framerate to around 15fps. (with a gtx 580). I hope this gets fixed on the final release, or at least an explanation why this is hapenning.
-- Movement Liberty: The first level of the demo would have been ten times better if a little more of liberty would have been given, i mean spatial liberty, like choosing paths or being able to run over those hills on the near distance. At least for levels that offer impressive landscape, spatial liberty is like a must.
-- I think the ammount of talents for each specialization could have been bigger, i hope future patches add more.
-- Physics, i wish there would have been a physics engine for body interactions, explotions, etc. Mass effect 2 did it and it worked flawlessly. A physics engine can mean new strategies of gameplay.
**** Impression
Looking forward to the full game

But my only real gameplay complaint is with the camera. I played the PC demo, and one of the things I loved about DA:O was that you could back the camera out into an isometric view where you could see the whole battle area pretty well. In the demo, it almost feels claustrophobic with how close the camera stays the character. It makes it hard to drag select your party, and you can't easily get to enemies off screen without panning the camera back down to horizontal first, or taking little baby step clicks.

classES:
-I'm partial to mages myself, so it was awesome to finally see them make use of the giant stick on their back for something other than throwing little teensy spells from across the room. I think that was spot on evolution that made perfect sense to me. Of course it's a little more stylized than I expected, but meh... it's pretty ****in', so I'm letting the baton-twirling-mages-of-death thing slide. I also like that different spells have different movement. So many spells before looked exactly the same when being cast.
-Rogues were an amazing surprise and I share the sentiments of those who found archery ridiculously fun. Again, I liked the mele option when you're using a bow. Makes sense. You're not going to ask your enemy to politely back up a few feet so you can shoot them. The stance was much better too; my Hawke actually looked like she was putting some effort into pulling the bow string back.
-As for the warrior... suddenly two-handed is fun! Huzzah! I hated two handed mele in origins because it was soooo slooow. So I'm looking forward to giving the new feel a try during a playthrough. I'm sure there's much wailing and gnashing of teeth at this fact because true, how fast can you really be wielding a weapon half your body weight, but still, it's fun. If my my two-handed warrior suddenly decides to become Michael Jordan with a gigantic sword, I'm content to sit back and be wowed by how seamless it all is.
COMBAT:
I like the feel of it, first off. It's quick and exciting, which is completely different from the feel of Origins. I know some people don't like it, of course, but I enjoyed it. I get the whole pausing/tactics vs. action debate. Seems to me that on hard or nightmare, those of us who enjoying controlling the party will get PLENTY of that kind of experience. While I dig the fast paced feel, combat does seem slightly unrealistic, but... it's a video game. I don't play for the realism, really. I've got enough of that every day. Switching from different enemies (say to lob a fireball behind me somewhere, then get back to the 'spawn in front me getting thumped by my staff) was much easier than before. That being said... sometimes the targeting was a little wonky. If there was a clustered group of enemies, it was a little tricky to single one out sometimes and likewise when you did, sometimes it would change randomly to another enemy. So, in some ways I miss the way in Origins you could single an enemy out and the controlled character would attack until you told them otherwise (without having to push the button numerous times). I've heard there's a way to revert to this (?) so I might give it a go when the game arrives.
RANDOM THOUGHTS:
Did anyone notice that all potions have a recharge time? That's new... and something I'm not particularly excited about. I survived many a battle in Origins with 200 plus health poltices crammed into my bottomless magic backpack. Lol. The recharge certainly made the last ogre battle interesting... in a painfully-tragic sort of way. Maybe this is a bug on my demo, but if it isn't it should be interesting adding that tidbit into my tactics. I never used to carry a healer along, but I might need to start in DA2.
I don't really want to wade into the whole breast discussion, but I will say hey, not all girls look exactly the same! Who's to say you can't throw a dagger or shoot lightening with double D cups, huh? Flipping about with those things might be problematic, but that's not the point. I'm just glad to see that there will be different body types. That's more realistic than the whole size thing, I say. Regardless... there's way more things to focus on than the... errr... 'huuuge tracks of land' on some of the NPC's, yes?
I was surprise how hard it was to see my virtual sibling die after only twenty minutes of gameplay (a little bitter about getting blamed for their death - hey, I didn't tell you to take on that ogre by yourself - but no matter). Chalk that up to the always amazing Bioware writers. I'm looking forward to riding the rest of the emotional roller coaster they have in store for us. Voice acting also sounds good. I'm loving Carver. Gasp! I know I'm like the only one, but I like his broody sarcasm. Can't wait to take the Devs advice and see what he looks like paired with a custom Hawke.
As for Flemeth, I'm with everyone in saying she looks different. She does. But I'm pretty sure that this wasn't a casual 'let's sex her up' type of redesign. I have faith there's a point to it and lets be honest, she certainly evokes a completely different emotional response then the crazy lady from the swamp, right? I'm betting the bad-assery is intentional. She's a crafty abomination, after all.
I can't really comment on the graphics, per say, since I have an xbox, but what I saw looked good to me. I suspect had a bought this for my PC I'd have much more to say. For a console game though, I'm happy.
All in all, I'm for the changes. Can't wait for March 8th!

Bad: Darkspawn now looks like retarded ninja, also there were too many pauses during the cut-scene, characters were interrupted mid-sentence waiting for another line to load.

I really liked the rogue combat style...the animations are fluid and dynamic.
In addition the mage has different animations for casting and gets to use the staff as more of a part of his/her magic. Didn't get to try the warrior, work night means have to quit soon.
Only gripe so far is the game is way unstable. Freezes constantly.
Haven't been able to finish (got as far as the ogre fight which I'm assuming is the last fight...) because of the bug.
Other than that so far this definitely looks like a winner.

I'm also really loving the abilities system. It's so much more complex than the DAO system, and I'm sure it'll give me a headache once I can take a look at everything unlocked, but it definitely feels like it'll be worth it.
One thing I'm not loving, though, is some of the recast times. It's absolutely wonderful that combat was sped up significantly, but recast timers really need to be able to keep up with that. So far, I've only played through as a mage and a rogue, and I noticed heal and evade have incredibly slow recast times. I was really expecting to be able to heal my way through that second ogre fight and didn't bother to conserve health potions, and it took forever. At this point it feels like upgrades will be absolutely necessary to make some abilities worth investing in. Or maybe a spirit healer will just be that much more of a necessity.
Other than that, I was feeling kind of negative about the UI and the dialog wheel and the voiced player, but now that I've experienced all that first hand, it's all really starting to grow on me.

Someone in the poll said how he liked that they dumbed down and sped up the combat a bit so that he could get into rpgs more...that's where Bioware kid of lost me...they're obviously pandering to newer gamers, and will end up losing hardcore fans. Which is strange considering DAO was generally loved. All they had to do was speed up the combat a bit, not add the acrobatics and cheesy combat moves. Remember when they said they made Origins with RPG fans in mind, that it was a "spiritual successor" to Baldurs Gate...what happened to that? They obviously threw that out the window.
You gotta realize (you probably do) that they are just a company, and a company tries to make as much money as possible, there's no such thing as making a game with RPG fans in mind if it doesn't get them more money. As sad as it is we who like the more oldschool RPG's are in a minority, just compare sales of ME and ME2, now tell me what they mainly focused on for ME2? Yeah exactly they focused almost solely on improving the action aspect of the game just as they're now doing with DA.
And to those who will just say i'm afraid of all change, let's just say that i'm all for change as long as it improves, not when it change the very basics of what makes the game. Just as you would probably not like if they made DA3 into a racing game i don't like how they made DA2 into an action-RPG.

In terms of actual gameplay, the spell changes didn't seem dramatic to me but they were definitely felt. Most spells seemed too powerful, to the point where I didn't notice whatever secondary effect they had because the target was already dead. I don't really dig the changes to talents but that's not a huge deal. I am anxious to find out what other spells they kept, though.
I'm torn on the visuals. The environment itself looked good, even if it bore no resemblance to how the area around Lothering looked in Origins. Some of the character designs I liked, namely Wesley, Varric, and Cassandra. Some of them I really don't like, namely Bethany, Isabela, Flemeth and Aveline. And then there are the darkspawn, which just look atrocious.
There are only a few things I couldn't stand; the animations and the new dialog wheel. The animations, at least, the combat ones, are way too over the top and exaggerated. As for the dialog wheel, it annoys me to no end that the options are not actually what will be said but merely paraphrasing of it.
As for Hawke being voiced; I don't like it, but its not absolutely awful. The only part of it that I don't like is when Hawke says something without me telling him to. It really annoyed me how I wasn't prompted on how to end the conversation with Aveline in which we decide to head to the Wilds. I would have liked a couple choices rather than none at all.
Though I only got a little taste of the rogue through Varric in the Isabela part of the demo, I think I may like the DA2 Rogue more the the one from DAO. Undoubtedly there are some changes I won't like, but I'm going to play through the demo again as one and see how I like it. The warrior left me unimpressed, which isn't uncommon for me really, but Aveline's Guardian specialization looks like it could be fun.
For the companions, I found myself liking Bethany much more than Carver. Aveline is just kinda meh from what is in the demo. Isabela seemed to have not changed much since Origins, for which I'm glad, even if I don't like her new look. And so far I like Varric, mainly for his voice, which I think is really well done.
The interface, however, was terrible. Visually, it looks out of place. Functionally, it didn't work very well. I swear, I had to click on the fast heal button ten times before Avelin actually used a potion. Spells like fireball and firestorm weren't allowed to be cast if the targeter was on an enemy, which was incredibly annoying. Combined with the fact that I couldn't enter the topdown camera mode area-of-effect spells became near-impossible to target correctly at times.
