[*][/list]The verdict: I'll wait for the reviews on this. Assuming the story and characters are good, it will be a day 1 purchase for me. Thank God this combat system isn't a repeat of DAO(WoW)! You've successfully blended some action and Japanese elements into this. Makes me think of Berserk, if anyone is a fan of that series.

I'm a huge Berserk fan.  I built my main DAO character around the concept of Guts.  I used 2handed swords, and used berserk as my main skill set.  I even installed a mod that let me use Gut's Dragon Slayer sword from the manga.  I chuckle every time someone mentions that the 2 handed swords are unrealistic and consider that the Dragon Slayer is 1 foot wide and 7 feet long.  Sometimes it's just more fun to let go of reality and let fantasy run rampant.

I've noticed a lot of people complaining about the loading screens during the cutscenes, and whish to help out a little. The reason there's a loading problem is because of the game trying to load text, skeletal animation sequences, and camera movement; all at the same time as rendering your models. The best trick I have for removing those annoying Loading screens was to turn my Anti-aliasing to 0. It obviously didn't please me to make the game less-beautiful, but at least all the cutscenes were smooth and I could get back into the story again without feeling alienated from it.

Thanks, but this is more of a last-resort workaround than a real solution :(

I used the directX9 version and sitll got these 'hiccups' between conversations. Again, this doesn't happen in the last part of the demo for me, so I'm not sure what causes this behavior.

I hope that BioWare are handling it based on players' feedback and that it doesn't happen in most of the full game.

And guys, really, stop whining about every little thing. If you want the game, buy it. If you don't - don't. You're just filling this forum with useless spam.

Okay, minus one whiner with un-dealt with sexual frustration, any other REAL comments about the demo? BioWare can live without YOUR 60$ lol

For the most part I really like the demo. (Xbox 360)

Pros
* This combat is definately better suited for a console. I am glad that they made it more hack n slash.

* The rogue dw is a lot more fluid now. I definately enjoyed being able to fight on my own without having to shuffle around to do a back stab all the time.

* Hawke having a voice will definately be an added bonus to the game.

* Graphics seem to be more crisp.

* Most of the Origin features are still there. Mainly the radial menu with the LT and being able to control every pary member. I play hard and nightmare always starting out so having the full party back was my favorite kept feature.

Cons
* So did they get rid of the skill trees that had lockpicking and poison... I noticed flasks are incorporated in rogue abilities now so I wasn't sure if we were getting that back.

* Carver and Bethany lack an individual talent tree making them each have only five abiltiy trees.

* This is a small one but man the chest in the demo looks awful haha.

* The family at least in the beginning seem ok. The siblings death I feel happens to early to really be heartfelt. My biggest complaint about this is I wish you could choose which sibling you kept. I really favor Carver over Bethany and would like to have a story with him but since I will be playing rogue a lot of the time this likely will not happen.

As far as the demo goes I really was impressed. The gameplay in terms of combat feels very nice to me. However I am not sure how well the story will compare to Origins. Though this was a demo i felt not as connected as I did with the Origins beginnings. However this is a lenghty game so time is needed to form a bond with whats to come.

Haha, nice. In the first part of the demo when you have all the elite skills, the armor and huge sword reminded me of something from Berserk. Very tastefully done. And yeah, I agree, we don't always need to be handcuffed perfect medieval realism. After reading this I'm totally making a Gutts warrior. B)

I wrote this to a friend of mine who also is disappointed with the demo:

-----

I just got done with the PC version. Its basically the same deal except you can pause and strategize easier. Still its wayyyyyy too f!ing fast. Im not sure who they are trying to please. You constantly have to click and attack but you can hold down the mouse button. I think there is an auto attack shortcut too but I dont know what it is.

On the console you can pause but you really cant manage things efficiently. Its a chore. Better to set tactics and then play it action style. Which after trying it 10 times could be kind of fun. Pulling off different feats. But it all looks so f!ing stupid. Forget it, nevermind. Also, in Origins you felt the blast of a Fireball. You felt Alistairs charge and shield bash. It was bad ass. In this its like a Saturday morning cartoon.

Dont like the art that much either. Some of its definitly cool other times its not realistic.. The console version makes it look a little grittier but not much. On the PC its very clean and looks like D&D 4th edition art. Craptacular.

I dont know man. I like it too much to abandon it so I may keep the order and just play through it. I know the story and everything else will be good. LOL....I already tried cancelling but I couldnt do it. I need to contact amazon to do it.

I did cancel the guide and the paperback though. Just too bummed out to give them anymore cash.

Combat system is great however, spell casting is a bit buggy. Sometimes I'll select a spell like fireball and won't let me directly cast it on a mob as the center point of the blast...I always had to target near the ground. Please change this ^^

the demo was actually nice. it was far better than what I had expected. the combat was like DA:O in good parts and had fixed the problems. I just wish they could lay off the bloody exploding bodies (that reminded me of old teen movies) and the characters in the demo were great (even if there were no character development, I got a feeling about what Avaline is like or could see that momma Hawke will blame Hawke for Carver's death for years to come). there were some weird bugs in it that I hope are fixed for the final version though. for example in my first time playing the demo, the scene where Avaline is introduced was bugged and as a result she had no sword, beating the darkspawn to death with HER BARE HANDS! that was glorious!

[Edit] = I forgot to mention that I played the PC version of the demo.

PC.

Gripes:

When I move the framerate is choppy unless I hold down the right mouse button. It's smooth as silk unless I use wasd to run, and there's a bit of choppiness. Annoying.

I'm disappointed in the corridor linear quality of the levels. I understand that this is only two small areas of a large game, but please alleviate my worries and tell me this is not going to be a FFXIII issue.

Loading times between cutscenes. This is inexcusable.

Graphical discrepancies in cutscenes. This is the year 2011. These cutscenes look like 480p Youtube videos.

Not a huge fan of the Dragon Effect conversation structure.

Oh, and who could forget? No Isometric view.

Likes--

Combat. Fun. Animation is really neat. Clean UI, I really like it. I'm hoping for more variety as the game progresses, and I anticipate that, but I thought it was just really, really fun to fight stuff.

Graphics. Aside from the hideous new darkspawn look, I really like the way the game looks. Flemeth looks amazing, and so does Hawk. Some of the other characters look a little goofy. But I'll deal with it.

Its not actually poor business, if they wanted to make a demo using the final build, we wouldn't actually of had anything to play prior to release in that case. The demo was probably also made on the last build they had prior to the finalized build for release.

My playthrough was on pc, I like many others turned everything for graphics up high, knowing they said direct x11 wasn't supported on the demo, and i had a few crashes due to that. Once I turned downed the settings to medium, I actually had 0 crashs from that point forward.

I enjoyed the demo, to get a taste of the game, I actually don't find anything different in the combat on pc other then its faster pace compared to DA:O. Which is pretty nice to have, for the tactial part of the battle, I didn't find anything different, I used the pause command a couple times in the fights to see what it was like compared to da:o, and I found once I used it a bit, some of the fights went even quicker.

In general, the demo didn't change my mind on my choice to pre-order the game

If you want people to buy your product you want a working, testable model, not something broken.  It's common sense.  Having played demos for other games in the past it has always influenced my decision to buy a product because it's the best indicator of what the game will be like.

When I'm shopping for a car and want to take a test drive, the dealership does not give me a model that is missing a door, that will not go past 50 km/h, and that might randomly eject me while driving just so they can give me something to try before the real product comes out.

EDIT - PS3

[Preface]I probably have around 500 hours on DA:O spread around 10 characters since it launched late '09, consider myself a pretty big strategy game elitist, am a hardcore min-maxer, grew up on turn based rpg's and can thank KOTOR for allowing me to start to appreciate rpg games with real time elements.

That being said, I absolutely love the demo. I have no complaints about the direction of the franchise, and I have pretty much memorized DA:O forwards and backwards.

The art style was generic, the combat was tactically engaging - but boring, the faceless emotionless main character was getting out of hand and Mage domination of combat had to be changed. The problem spells are not problems anymore (Haste cannot be sustained for example) and playing a rogue "feels" like a rogue where as playing a warrior feels like you're crushing faces.

If anything, the fact your character moves more dynamically in combat instead of "locking" onto targets and chopping at them until they die to me actually adds more depth to the combat system.

Currently, my only gripe is the (premature) lack of my favorite spec the Arcane Warrior. However, I suspect with the correct itemization and spell choices I can in fact put my combat mage back together. After my initial Rogue play through, of course. I'm very excited that combat movement exists now, and with careful timing you can actually avoid attacks through skill use.

Interactivity is good. Passive auto attacking and issuing commands is non-fun.

Well, hello everyone.  I'm new to these forums, although I have also been an active forum goer on the SW:TOR forums.  I thought I'd sign up and stop by with my personal opinion and amature review on the Demo.  Let's start with the former...

Firstly, combat looks great.  The framed story perspective is different and I'm interested in seeing how that turns out.  The art direction is okay...I am not a fan of the squealing monkies the Darkspawn turned into, however.  I'm sad that you can no longer choose your race, but after seeing the reasons as to why they were not included I can stomach past it.  Hawke seems like a cool character to get into, I will most likely make him choose "silly" options just cause.  I'm also dissapointed that my two favorite specs, Ranger and Shapeshifter, did not make the cut.  I hear the downloadable Mabari Warhound acts just like a Ranger pet in that regard, so I'll look into that.

The party members seem alright, I've seen better at face value.  I'm thinking of having Anders (personal favorite), Fenris, and Varric as my go-to wingmen, but I'll likely switch it up as well.  Might hit up the she-pirate, might not.  All in all I've had some dissapointments, but I think I can look past them and see how good of a game DA2 really is.

Now, on to the Demo review.  Let's start with the Pros:

-Combat.  Love it.  Being a mage has never been more fun.  I'm playing through the demo again as the same male mage just so I can fiddle around with the combat more, burning up the squealing monkies that call themselves darkspawn.  The icons are more distinguishable, but it hasn't been a real issue but it helps.  Tactics are still there, so I can truely command like a general and fight like a spartan (or in this case, partially insane elementalist with a dog).

-Voice acting.  I'm talking about Hawke in particular.  I've never liked the idea of not being able to choose race because the main character can speak, but I've learned to like Hawke enough to justify it.  He sounds cool and looks cool as well.  It may not be my lovable Dwarf Noble Beastmaster, but he is still pretty awsome.  Other characters sound very good as well, and am very glad Flemeth made her triumphent return as well.  Some of them are a little off I think, but no where near as bad as some other games coughtwoworldscough.

-Interface.  A lot less clumsy interface is always good.  I feel like I can get to what I need to lickitysplit, but pressing start over select is going to take some getting used toPosted Image.  Having stats tell you what their immediate effect will be is a godsend.  And the branched out talent trees are nice as well.

-Music.  Very good, I've heard better, but it is good none the less.

-Dialogue.  Also good, I'm still getting used to having my character respond when I click an option.

Now, on to the Cons...

-Art Direction.  The art is very pretty...but I don't recall Lothering being a martian wasteland.  I hope the rest of the world isn't like this.  But as far as Art goes...biggest thing is the Darkspawn.  Qunari turned out awsome, Elves and Dwarves are fine...but the Darkspawn just look terrible.  From orc-like bad mofos, to bald, squealing monkies with sharp pointy sticks.

-Dialogue wheel.  I like the wheel, but I think that sometimes (not always) Hawke will say something I never actually expected him to say.  I hope they change it to give us a better understanding of what he is going to say.

-Framerate.  I had some choppy framerate when first booting up the game when running from Lothering.  I think this is an issue that will be resolved ingame.

Note:  I was going to add that jumping from Lothering into the Kirkwall fighting scene made me very pissed off.  But I read around and this was soley do to it being a demo.  This is what I thought originally, and I'm glad this has been confirmed.  So no problems here.

All in all, the demo was enjoyable.  At first, I was put off my Dragon Age 2 because everything I liked about DAO was cut.  Playable Races, "Different" Party Members (i.e. Shale, Justice, and Dog), Ranger spec, and Shapeshifting Spec.  However, I am getting it out of my system and trying to look past it.  Still hoping for some cool DLC though.  I'll most likely be buying this game, early on too, to get the Mabari.

I so cant wait for the full game now! I got a nice surprise at how much nicer DA2 looks, and an even bigger one at how much faster it is! I must admit i hadnt fully grasped the new speed by the end of the demo, but it is very cool to see this game in action, and i feel my preorder has been validated! Having the protagonist speak is great, though hearing the tone of the responses as apposed to reading them (in the original) definitely ramps up what a snarky line really sounds like! Definitely laughed a few times at how nasty some of the choices sounded! I do hope the visual hiccups every now and again, and jerky loading transitions get smoothed out but otherwise i found this teaser great. It was really cool being reminded of the DA universe with characters referencing locations that i knew about, and just having a new dragon age experiance in general really, has got me pumped for this. Cant wait!!!

Okay, just played a second playthrough as a female mage. What the hell is up with that run? Hawke was all waving her arms around and doing this weird hip thing.... One of the things I liked most about Origins is that females didn't put more energy into wagging their butts than fighting. In fact Origins was one of the few video games I could stand to play a female. Damn! Pretty sure female warrior Hawke didn't do that. I guess playing a female mage is out of the question. Wow. So irritating!

Also, playing as a mage was incredibly easy. My first playthrough was with two S&S warriors once carver dies and that was definitely more challenging. Not a lot, but more. With the PC as a mage, I'd say this was easier than DA:O on easy.

PC version: heavily disappointed by this console crap. From very bad graphics to the new design of the Darkspawn and Flemeth, to the huge bras of Isabella, to the new combat system, to the so-called HUD (was that a joke?), to the Mass Effect inspired dialog wheel, to the very linear path you follow (it’s even more linear than in ME2!). It felt I was playing the standard average fantasy action game you can find on every platform nowadays… this game looks like a real disappointment compared to Origins.

The sound is uneven: too low in during game sessions and the main menu (you can barely hear the music) and too high during cut scenes. The acting in the French version is REALLY bad compared to Origins.

There are also some slowdowns here and there during cut scenes and when looting.

Ah and when you want to stab someone with a dagger, obviously you do not do it through the plate chest protection! Same with throwing knives!

I will maintain my preorder but will not seek to buy further expansion or DLC for the Dragon Age franchise. If ME3 keeps this trend, I do not expect to buy further games from Bioware after its release.

Graphics, animation and combat has degenerated into flashy particle effects. Voice acting and dialogue is as bland as it was in Origins, but still lightyears away from being a spiritual successors to anything but perhaps a Gauntlet clone. The fact that most of the posts that praise the demo are littered with typos speaks for itself. The fact that kids take it personally and start flaming when someone does not like "their" game speaks for itself. This is not BG. This is not an RPG. This is not even a good game. You ****ing suck, Bioware.

I think you're right about the mage.  The movement was much more noticable as a femal mage than the other classes.

Maybe its just my TV, but the descriptions in the skill tree while levelling up were small. The hints and tips during loading screens were extremely small. I didn't notice if there was an option to increase the size of these or not. Maybe there was and I just missed it. :)

That is my only real complaint of the demo. Everything else ran smoothly. Can't wait til March 8. :)

Theres something i didnt say but is something that most have said I believe. I dont mine the artstyle its awesome and looks better than origins in my opinion. Its the change in the Hurlocks looks that bugs me and my friends, they remind you of Jesters. They like turned Hurlocks into Genlocks and what not. Also I hope there is Genlocks in DA2, but the way the Hurlocks were acting i am afraid that there isnt.

But there is something i must repeat, Male Hawke voice doesnt fit Hawke in my opinion. You get this weird british accent out of a character(Male Hawke mainly) when your expecting the voice to be something else. So I was taken back on the way male Hawke sounded. Female Hawke seemed more natural but the voice actor didnt sound like they were trying to be in character sometimes.

People seem to be having problems with text size. I'd imagine. I used to play on a small tv but the new one in my room is actually quite large now hehe. Text size isn't an issue for me, but I can sympathize with those with smaller tvs. I think you should be able to adjust the text size to fit smaller screens.
