After playing the demo, I feel trolled. Almost as if someone has pulled a great prank on me. I have looked forward to this game, a lot, since I love Dragon Age origins. I can say that I do not look forward to the release any more. I will not say that it's a bad game. The fact that many seem to enjoy the demo clearly talks against such claims, but I cannot say that it's a good game either, since I experienced nothing such in the demo I tried.
To clarify things a bit. I like RPGs, like Fallout 3 and Oblivion. And I absolutely love RPGs like Mass Effect and Dragon Age Origins. But I have never been a fan of buttonmasher action games like God of War. And judging from this demo, Dragon Age 2 feels more related with that game, than with it's actual predecessor.
This was gravely disappointing.

The auto-attack function will be included in the full version on consoles. I'm beginning to sound like a broken record. ;)

Edit: In fact, I'll just link http://social.biowar...index/4827188/3

DA2 mash A to attack. Really cannot understand why we don't have an option to turn "auto" attack on. Just pressing a constantly makes me more than a little bored. I will buy the game (pre ordered the signature edition) so I aren't going to be like others on here and just start taking shots at Bioware.

I've already posted my feelings, but they need hammering home to BioWare.

Smashing the A button inbetween your abilities recharging isn't gameplay - it's just a mini game with fancy graphics. DA2 shouldn't try to pretend it's an action game, because it's clearly NOT. If it was, there'd be bona fide attack buttons, combos, and all that hoopla. There isn't. It's just press A. Press A. Press A again. Aaaaaand.... press A again. Now press Y! And back to A...

I don't think Origins should have just been repeated - I'm all for progression and evolution. But this? This is a game mechanic that feels like it belongs in another game entirely. It distracts from the tactics that are still there, as you're constantly aware you need to manually maximise the damage you're dishing out.

Give us a CHOICE, BioWare.

EDIT: wait, what?! Darn, sorry poster-whose-name-i-now-can't-see! If auto-attack's in the full version, then I'm a fairly contented chappy. Cue embarrassment: Posted Image

Haha, indeed. I loved how using aoe spells on my party members had no consecquence at all. I really hope my party takes more damage if I do a mistake on higher difficulty settings.
I also hear that my party members can only upgrade their armour (sort of like ME2), is this true? :<

Was I fighting the same ogre that everyone else was?

All I did was right click, winters grasp, fireball, repeat and it died. No difficulty or thinking required at all.

It hardly compares to how difficult the first ogre fight in DAO was:

Just played the xbox demo as a mage and rogue.

First played through it with the mage and was a little put off with the graphics.

The ogres in DAO were way cooler looking than the ones in DA2.

The environments in the wilds were kinda bland.

I understand your going for a different art direction and i can appreciate that, but it seems in some respects you may have taken a step back going for a more stylized approach as opposed to realism.

On a positive note, Flemeth looked great graphically as the dragon.

The audio/soundtrack is great!

Second playthrough as rogue and I could start to feel the change of pace between DAO and DA2 alot more clearly.

Very nice play mechanics in the reaction time to abilities and playing as an archer was actually cool.

Overall I'm really excited about playing the game now and my only complaints if any would be in the graphical department.

Thx Bioware!

Well, after just finishing a playthrough, let me give some initial thoughts.

The interface is crisper, the graphics sharper and more vibrant. From what I can tell of the characters and the voice acting it seems to be equal to DA:O.

One big complaint I have however, is the lack of tactical zoom. To actually strip it from the game seems to me to be an INSANE choice, it's what set the PC and console versions of DA:O apart, in that combat was actually FAR SUPERIOR because of that tactical zoom.

I suppose some consessions had to made for the console kiddies but come on...from a game whose predecessor claimed to be the "spiritual successor to Baldur's Gate" it feels like PC gamers are once again being robbed of functionality just to make it more appealing to people who can't handle more than 5 buttons. (I speak in terms of the gamepad VS keyboard+mouse and also in some cases the general mental ability of some console gamers).

I mean, having targeted abilities that affect groups and actually show the floor marker and not actually being able to see where you are clicking because of the lack of an aerial view kinda sucks, it's also kinda stupid.

But, that major gripe out of the way, it seems that I'll enjoy the game at least as much as the first one.

Despite all of my misgivings about Isabella, just from the demo I am liking her much, much more. In point of fact, out of all the glimpses of companions and interactions during the course of the demo, hers was the most intriguing.

Yes, party members upgrade their armour.

Also, there is friendly fire on Nightmare.

Senbon, armor customisation for companions has been lessened yes. You can't equip boots, gloves, and chest armor. However, you can stil buy armor upgrades (I'm unsure how this works)

There's also runes, rings, amulets and belts to equip. Weapons can also be changed for characters (with the exception of Varric I think)

I noticed that too, wasn't sure if they were taking damage or not.

I think that if a character has a stylized clothing set then upgrading the stats without wildly altering the appearance could be quite good, if a little arbitrary. If everyone had the options that a fully kitted out Shephard armour cupboard had, that'd be pretty good. Was a bit sad to see everyone in scale mail for a decent chunk of the early parts of DA1.

I really like dual-wield rogue gameplay, except for that one "spinning" closing attack. It looks weird, especially when an enemy moves away and your character does it repeatedly. The new backstab is great and really removes the shuffling. It's annoying that there are still no bow-strings or crossbows for archers.

I also noticed that Aveline's "Guardian" spec is completely overpowered. No knockdowns, no stuns, much higher damage resistance in longer fights... I don't think I will ever play as a tank on higher difficulty settings.

Overall: loved it! Everything feels better(graphics, music, etc), except maybe dialogue since the paraphrases were REALLY lacking on details some of the time. The icon helped, but I was still surprised a few times by what Hawke said, even if the tone was what I expected. Also kinda got annoyed with the lack of auto-attack, but just a little. Played through 3 times, once as each class.

Went sword and shield with warrior. Felt really familiar, just fast and more powerful. Knockbacks actually mean something now! Yay! Taunt was really good when tanking, and tanking was actually needed at times! Go figure.

Archery rogue was a very nice improvement over DAO. Didn't feel like I was just sitting there doing nothing, and we get some awesome abilities early on that do some serious damage. Also liked all the stuns, and loved that backstab came with an instant "get behind the guy" effect instead of having to put your rogue behind everyone.

Mage was just... wow. Felt like there was a real need for CC, otherwise everyone could just get swarmed, so I used fireball a lot more then I expected. Also liked that there wasn't any cast time (at least not yet), let me stay mobile so I could do damage without having to eat an ogre's face to do it. Noticed that just with Bethany too, she would get herself out of trouble but still do what she was supposed to do.

OMG, Anyone know why the graphics and performance suck so much?

IN DA1 I got 60fps constant on max graphics on 1920 resolution. Here I have to come down to 1280 resolution to even keep it playable (30-40fps).

Oh, and this with merely "high" graphics, because the demo doesn't support "very high"... From what I can see DAII is no better graphically than DAI at least on the demo settings, yet... the performance is so much worse.

It's because the DX11 isn't fully optimized in the demo, only partially, at least that's my theory. Funnily enough though I managed to play on DX11 and everything on max setting while still maintaining around 50-60 FPS, and other than some loads in cutscenes and some screentearing (Vsync was not working at all), I playing fine on 1920 resolution, not hiccups sans the cutscene loads.

Dragon Age 2 is pretty much for all the people who dont like pausing during combat, or keep on killing their own party members with friendly fire because they suck that much.

wrong.
i did it (pause during the demo....not necessary i know!) and i didn't kill any.
if u can't do it w/o killing some1, don't blame the game. <3

cos it's blocked in the demo, but there is on the full game.
dunno why tbh.

If this is the case then I am very happy and also feel quite ignorant now for not realising this, but like you said, it is pretty stupid.

The demo was amazing. The combat was so fast and fluid. DAO had some of the best combat in an rpg, and this game improves on it vastly. The characters already seem like they're going to be more interesting than the ones in DAO. The characters voices actors are very quality as well. I played as all the classes and I thouroughly enjoyed playing as a mage the most. You feel like you control the battlefield and are not completily overpowered like in Origins. Love how your teammates use their abilites to compliment one another in combat. The warriors improved speed make them a lifesaver when a enemy is coming at a character with less health, which is great for tactical purposes.

This game is a step-up in every way compared to Origins. Great job Bioware, can't wait to play the entire game.

Seems so...

caus who needs Inventory in a RPG? As long as there are exploding enemies which you can kill in hordes, by simply mash the A Button....

shiny fighting, MMO Overlay and more fighting then in Dynasty Warriors.. what else do you need to have a great ROLEPLAY game? I, for my part would know some things, but Bioware seems to have forgotten.
Anyways, since enough people here like it the Hackn Slay Way, i will have to look elsewehre for some good roleplaying :(

Am i the only one who noticed characters jittering a bit when they ran. Its not that big of a deal, and it could have to do with it being a demo build, but it looked on occasion as if characters werent quite locked down to the enviornment. Its not the running animation, its a clear...jitter. Maybe its just me.

The final implementation for auto-attack on console is actually a toggle
in the options menu, if I recall correctly. You don't have to open the

Other than Auto Attack being unavailable in the demo it was really fun. Played it through with each class. Felt a bit underpowered in the exaggerated scene as a warrior though. Or at the least it seemed to take the longest to beat that initial scene as a warrior compared to the mage or rogue.

I like the combat better. but even with it being more fluid I still find myself pausing to strategize . For me its the perfect balance between the two. Although my only complaints are not being able to change the difficulty in the game. Also even in DX11 I think the game performs great. Better then DAO even.

I finished the Xbox 360 demo earlier today and I don't really have anything to complain about at all.

I really like everything so far. The battles are so much more fun than what they were in Origins.

I will play the demo for PC tomorrow.
