Here's a very simple rule for discussion on these forums.
If you bring up a complaint and avoid insulting others in your post, congratulations! You've made a successful post.
If you find yourself using the phrase 'ADHD casual masses', 'console kiddies' or anything similar in your post, you're likely not contributing to the discussion in a constructive way and should probably refrain from posting.
This has been a public service announcement.

John, as someone who has used the term "ADHD", let me rephrase... The current combat animations are, IMO, too frenetic. It's like someone is taking a ginsu knife and chopping away thousands of tiny pieces. Like going to a Benihana and having the chef do a juggling act at your table with his knives. It's impossible for me to follow and just makes for a visually chaotic mess. (In DAO, the 2h attacks were definitely too slow but everything else was about on par with what I'd expect, while in DA2 everything seems too fast.) And the animation for the warrior charging into combat looks like some sort of force ability out of KOTOR or teleportation gimmick. I completely agree with the effort to get rid of the shuffle, but this seemed like too much. Warrior Hawke (as far as we know) isn't supposed to be some magical superdude (or dudette); yet he's basically teleporting/phasing/hyperspeeding across the battlefield.

In short, me no like that. I also don't expect it to change; the game is designed, finished and gone gold. And I love the rest of what I saw in the demo. But I did not like this.

While I had other criticisms, the only one I'll repeat again (and that I hope actually can be included in a "patch") is adding a toggle in the gameplay settings for friendly fire. Yes, I know I can have friendly fire if I play on insanity or impossible or whatever it is. But I'd rather be able to play Normal or Hard with friendly fire on.

Oh, and I lied... one other thing I'd like "fixed" in a patch is the ability to pull back the camera further on the PC.

Thanks!

Played the demo for some time and that's my opinion: I can handle with lots of changes made from Origins. But! That's the ugliest interface I've ever seen in PC-version. Where are dialogs? They were so medieval. And now we have some creepy ME-style...

anybody notice the interrogation chick's hair is dark brown/black in the game, white/silver in the video after you beat the demo? white/silver would've been cooler, even if maybe cliche

Downloaded the demo yesterday on PS3. I loved Dragon Age Origins and played it A LOT but what I played yesterday did not feel like Dragon Age AT ALL. I was basically mashing X. I beat both Ogres without anyone close to dying what the hell??? Positioning was SUPEREASY, felt more like god of war I know its on normal difficulty but the first Ogre in the first Dragon Age was 10 times tougher and hit WAY harder even on normal. Also what the hell is with the new darkspawn model seriously the darkspawn in the first DA looked threatening, the ones in DA2 look like mindless skinny circus clowns...FFS Bioware. No tactical planning is needed anymore it seems, just mash X and throw in the occasional AOE and thats about it. I preordered a copy but I just cancelled it this morning, I will now wait for Gamespot and IGN to give their verdict then decide. I could keep going on about the stuff that made the demo feel more like Dragon Age: God Of War but I will stop now. One thing is certain though this is not what was promised as a sequel!

Yes, I thought I was just seeing things, but yes. I thought the white/silver was a better, too, but then Flemeth also has white hair, so maybe they thought it was one-too-many antagonistic females with white hair.

Interesting, if trivial, observation:

Because Lady Hawke is flawlessly pretty, with perfect skin and a shiny new emo haircut, it might not have escaped the notice of other players that, if you make her a warrior who weilds an unrealistically large double-handed sword, she looks just like a Final Fantasy character! In fact she looks more like the the twin sister of Squall Leonhart from Final Fantasy VIII than a blood relative of either Bethany or Carver. ;p

I don't get why people are comparing DA2 to Witcher and Elder Scrolls.

They are different games. The fact they're coming out this year is irrelevant. Games that are so different in the way they play really shouldnt be compared.

Anyways I thought i'd give my opinions once more after playing through every possible way. I've done both genders, all classes, all combat styles. Mage is a more fun class to play through this time, I always found it quite tedious in Origins. I'm still not a fan of 2H but rogues are so much better now. Both archer and dual wield I loved in Origins so it's nice to see my favourite class is better than ever!

Pretty much everything the old-school gamers feared would be lost from DAO. Combat feels like every other button-mashing console 'action game;' out there.

Didn't like the way they forced party members on you and forced you to do their quests. Looks like companions are mandatory now. No choices to make - the only meaningful choice is auto-decided by your class.

It simply doesn't feel like an RPG. Like many feared, it's an 'action' game aimed squarely at the konsole kidz who wanted more fighting and less choices/role-playing. But 'lowest denominator' sells, so it will probably break all kinds of sales records.

I shall decide to buy it or not when the romances are confirmed - I certainly wouldn't want it on this evidence. There are dozens of Devil-May-Cry games out there already.

+1
I'm really missing friendly fire.
As long as playing on normal will still require some combat strategy I'll be happy. In DA:O I was a mage and had to manage my party so they weren't affected by my AOE spells and others, but now in DA2 I don't see the point of needing to be a mage.  As much as  love being a mage they lost the strategy involved from what I can tell so I'm mostly likely just going to be a rogue and build up archery.

I've already played the demo once, with a female rogue character. I've liked it but I hope that the game will have more dialogue, story and non fightning quests, like Origins had :)

Wow--check the ticker.  I estimate we'll have 1,000,000 by tomorrow morning at the latest.  That's awesome.  Grats to Bioware for achieving some serious popularity.

From doing some online glancing about, it seems that 2,000,000 demo downloads is enough to put a game into "most popular demo ever" territory, and they might even make THAT before the game actually comes out.  (Maybe.)

Cheers to you guys, here's hoping you make those 10,000,000 sales you wanted.

They both come out this year. Witcher 2 and Skyrim both show CLEAR evolutionary paths from the previous games in the series while DA2 does not. Moreover there are consistent artistic styles and direction to the games, again in DA2 there is not.

The comparison is also made, because the way the games played is consistent with their prequels, yet again this is not the case in DA2; traditional dice-roll in DAO to action RPG in DA2.

The comparisons are valid. The Bethesda and CD Projekt Red communities are being shown they are listened to. The Dragon Age community, or at least what it used to be, significantly is not. I wouldn't say a majority of DAO fans disliked the demo, but at least a large minority.

I liked the demo a lot.

Still, there are some things I'm concerned of:

1) Choppy framerate.
I would've figured my GTX 275 would be perfectly capable of running the demo on high settings. Either I'm very wrong, or it is the framerate.

2) This:

Lol, some bad luck there.

---

I don't know why ANYONE liked "The Witcher", as it was a horribly buggy game that crashed over 50 times, was tedious, was pretty poorly balanced, and in my opinion had an atrocious story and all around SUCKED.

And I've only said things like that about a very very small quantity of games.

I've noticed through these comments here the dragon age community is split into mainly two groups :

The origins hardliners, who refuse any sort of change and clamor for the "glory days" and the fans who appreciate another entry in the series.

I understand the complaints, I really do - but you guys do realize Dragon age with all of it's flaws is definitely one of the leading RPGS of today - right? And that without certain changes or any sort of innovation the series is canceled and we don't have anything else to play beyond the 15th play through of Origins.

Right?

Like I said, I'm fine with criticism and I realize everyone's gaming experience is different - but why is it so impossible to appreciate something for what it is instead of idealizing everything in life? I'd love to hear about some stronger RPGs that manage to encompass all that DA does without any of it's flaws?

There is one one the way, but i can't tell you the full name: TW2.... Listen, the problem is that Dragon Age 2 is not an RPG, more like a hack'n'slash similar to Dungeon Siege with an interactive story.... Calling this game RPG, as well ME2, it's a little insulting to RPG... I think that a lot of people forget or do not understand the meaning of RPG...

Because i think that most of the players here that claim DA2 an RPG are not stupid, but for sure they have little knowledge of RPG....

And you would know exactly from an hour long demo that doesn't put you in any position to make real choices?

Dragon Age 2 has auto attack. You can toggle it if you wish.

Dragon Age 2 still has decisions. You just didn't see any in the demo. Which was two scenes.

Dragon Age 2's combat system is almost identical to Origins. The exception being some spells are activatiable where as they were sustainables before, and now rogues have combat movement.

The art style is a pretty massive improvement. This is fact. Origins characters were bland, lifeless, had monkey arms and weird shaped torsos, doll like faces with no expression. The backgrounds were grey grey grey grey, fields, caves, grey gey, a hill. Dragon age 2 looks to have back drops.

Look dude, you can try and pull that RPG elitist stuff with me, but have your facts together.

Beyond the Witcher (Which is just an action/adventure rpg - the kind you hate so much), what else destroys dragon age?

And what exactly is your definition of a "true" rpg then? Since you've taken the time to understand my opinion (calling me "ignorant of RPG") and not insult me, I will take the time to understand yours?

Now, could you please fix DA:O for Win7? You're the ones who broke it with 1.04.

That's strange. I played 1.04 on W7 x86 and don't recall any crash or problems with this patch.

Agreed. I have Windows 7 (64 bit) and DAO runs smoothly.

Well the combat is good, the story line is cool, i like the part when you start from Lothering, i can say the demo made me preorder the game, to tell you the truth. And yes i like that they made it look like the mass effect 2 in the past, let's be honest for a second, every one enjoyed mass effect world.

Pros:
- Much improved graphics (too bad I don't have directX 11)
- Diversity in appearance of characters
- Better cutscenes
- Load times seem improved
- The dialogue wheel/voiced player lines setting is better than I expected it to be
- The new talents/specializations screen is an improvement
- Now you can outrun the charging or stone-throwing ogre
- Buttons specifically for potions

Cons:
- The health bars and text labels of the enemies are too big (I preferred the small ones in DAO)
- Combat is too impossibly fast (good for console gamers but bad for PC gamers like me)
- Even though I hated the cooldown times in DAO, I find myself wanting them back in DA2 to slow down the combat
- The dialogue wheel takes the fun out of trying to figure out which line is best for the given companion
- Ranged spells (like fireball) can no longer lock on to an enemy? You have to guess where they're going to be when you finally send the fireball flying? (I hope this isn't true, and I just couldn't figure out how to lock on.)
- The running animation of FemHawke is ridiculously unathletic
- The porno breast size of the women (don't make DA into Tomb Raider; Lara Croft's boobs got bigger for every sequel)
- I don't like it when old characters and creatures get brand new looks for the sequel (I find it just as annoying in videogames as it is in movies)

Bugs Maybe?
- My healing mage never healed anybody even though her tactics were set to do so
- At one point the tactics screen was bugging out. Nothing would highlight, so I couldn't change the tactics.
- The level up menu was also bugging out. It wouldn't let me level up the companions until I spam-clicked the button

IMO she looks pretty badass. She'll be the first female I ever use as the PC due to her look and decent voicecast. They could have gone with a long haired babe, but her hair and eyes give her a reasonably unique look. Probably won't be touching her face in character gen unless I can add a scar. :)

Her and Isabela... rawr :3

I like that she has nice muscular legs instead of those twig things all the females had in Origins.  She really looks like someone who could use them thighs to good effect--in combat or out.

One gripe that really gets to me is; if the game mechanics are changing in favor for action RPG which is very apparent and obvious in the demo. Why oh why does the pc version not support a gamepad or the disabling of auto attack. You guys are really shafting pc players with the inferior version in terms of "gameplay" which makes no sense to me. You guys gear it more towards action rpg but pc players don't get the button mashing option that consoles do? it makes no sense and greatly degrades the experience to some half breed game that doesn't do 1 thing well but tries to do 10 things just "ok".

When 20 darkspawn are rushing your character and the game is made more toward buttton mashing action, im sorry but point and click are not a valid game mechanic in this situation, especially with animation etc.. moving fast paced. Either make a good point and click game or make a good button mashing game, but dont make a button mashing game and force pc players to use a mouse for it.

Dude, freaking DAGGERFALL won RPGOTY.  DAGGERFALL.

DAGGERFALL.

There usually aren't that many RPGs out in a year to choose from, and JRPG's don't seem to get counted.

One last time:  DAGGER-FREAKING-FALL.

I assure you, I've played nearly every RPG, and every game.

The point is that "The Witcher" was SOOOOOO buggy, that I literally crashed to desktop over 50 times, and each time could play for exactly an hour and a half before I crashed again... the difficulty was also atrocious.

I am shocked and awed by the fact it achieved GOTY... as it was BLAND.
