Dude, freaking DAGGERFALL won RPGOTY.  DAGGERFALL.

Hey, for its time, Daggerfall was excellent. I still replay it occasionally - no, it doesn't have the same wow factor for me that it did when it came out, and I wouldn't expect it to, but it's a classic, well-designed, properly-constructed game.

I wonder if I'll still think it worth replaying DA2 in 2025?

I'm not trying to say anyone is wrong. I'm just trying to have my own opinion.

I still think DA2 will be a very good game, Bioware is not known for sucking. It's just not what I thought it was going to be when I pre-ordered it. And I'm not sure it's what I want to play to continue my Dragon Age experience. Maybe that will change in the future.

I thought ME2 was great, and I think the gameplay fits perfectly for a more shooter type environment, but I don't think it fits or plays very well in a sword and magic world.

Been playing around a bit more in the demo now =) M!Hawke and F!Hawke have really good voices, love them both. This time I might actually try to play a male character. Usually I only play females and my poor male warden is the only one that hasn't got a completed game so far, but I quite like his voice and could see myself playing with it.

The twins have good voices, Bethany has a really wonderful sense of humor which was fun, don't know them well enough to say more than that I like what I see so far. Mom too =) Flemeth is awesome, her voice and bearing. That is one scary lady and as always her voice is great!

I like this version of Ferelden more than the old one, for me this is easier on the eyes =) I have also come to realise that I prefer that all the partymembers having their own build, different set of bodies and different outfits. I loved to be able to switch armor on people in DA:O but if I get to choose between F!Hawke, Bethany and Aveline having the same body but lots of armor or allowing them to look different but have fewer out fits. I'll go with them being different. No problem. A bit surprising for me =) I was pretty sad before at the change but now I see it as a very positive move. Still hope that we can get something new for them later on, fun dlc like ME2 =)

Had a lot of fun with mage and rouge, I usually play in casual or normal =) so this worked great for me. I had a lot of fun with both of them. Especially the rouge. For me this was a really good level of playing. I enjoy a bit of fighting between my storybits so super for me. Guess that people who enjoy playing on a more challenging level think it was too easy but they have the possibility to do so later when the game comes out. Hope that it will be as fun for them later on as I had today =)

Okay was it just in the demo but it looked like you could level your character to 99. I swear when I looked at something on the menu screens it looked like you could get to 99. Can anyone confirm or deny this?

there was nothing to dislike about the combat in origins, it was brilliant,

changing that seems like a producer taking a guess at why the sales weren't higher than they were,

if people didn't buy or like origins don't you reckon it was cos of all the sad cheesy dialogue? (please please please go away fully-voiced-demon i hate you forever)

ok, I just finished up the PC version of the demo. I went in with very positive thoughts, especially being a veteran of DA:O. I loved the new art style, I was truly blown away, and the beginning was very cool Posted Image however, after the combat started i had some minor problems with the game. I thought the mad jumping and slashing didnt go very well with the warrior. I understood the jumping the rouges did, but i felt DA:O's warrior had a more realistic feel to it, actually walking or running in as opposed to jumping in like some kind of demon Posted Image I understand this is a fantasy RPG series, but in my opinion, i thought it was too flashy.

The dialogue was....meh.... it was alright, i liked the voice acting, but I believe Hawke should have said what you clicked on, rather than giving a detailed version of the perfectly good question I intended to ask. I was fine with the whole silent protagonist who didnt say what you clicked, but i supose this was necessary to satiate those people who wanted a talking hero.

Some people on this forum might be confused over the sudden jump in storyline, and even though this has been answered many times by now, I fully understood the jump being a part of the demo, as well as the limitations of the menu and inventory. Personally I thought Varic (for those of you who forgot who that is, its the dwarf guy with the crossbow) was a fine character, and essential to the telling of the story, however i would prefer another party member myself, but everyone complaining about the inability to change the party should understand that this too is part of the limitation imposed by the demo, there will certainly be time to change the party in the full game.Posted Image

So my final verdict is:

-Combat-  Nice work overall, needs more realism on the part of the warrior being a wrecking ball that jumps around the screen with impossibly big weapons like in devil may cry (which i am not a very big fan of, if i might add). Posted Image The damage leaves more to be desired, i don't know if its the difficulty, but i think it took a couple hits too many to take down a simple hurlock. I also noticed an absence of genlocks, have they been removed entirely, or are they just not in the demo?Posted Image just a thought.

-Level Up-  I thought the new skill tree was much better in terms of organization and look, but i thought it was a bit confusing at first. I also had a minor problem where clicking the level up arrow in the upgrade screen would cause it to close, i thought this was confusing and personally thought it was annoying, so maybe the arrow could be removed or the behavior changed somehow when you open the attributes/talents screen? Posted Image

-Look- The game LOOKS amazing, however when i look closely at some parts of a character or a character's item in a cutscene, i notice its a little blocky or swirly (best way i can describe it) my computer is a pretty good one, and the game ran without lag and it loaded up pretty fast, so maybe it was just due to the game being a demo? Posted Image its not really a big problem, just a curiosity on my part. Overall the art style is a massive improvement over Origins, but i miss the ability to pick a race (yes I am aware I am going off topic slightly, bear with me) while i did prefer the dual wielding warrior tank with the human noble background story, i do want to see the gameplay through the view of elves and dwarves, possibly from other cities. This could be a good idea for DLC, but the game is good enough with its current storyline Posted Image

-OVERALL- On the whole, the demo was very good, aside from the minor annoyances I mentioned earlier, i do not consider myself a dedicated RPG player (I prefer FPS games, but a good RPG like dragon age is welcome in my game list any day Posted Image ) so it pleases me, in terms of both gameplay and proposed storyline, as well as character development (I already see a potential romance with Hawke and Captain Isabella, so who knows what else is in store? ). So, Bioware, continue to develop an already beautiful game (BUT FIX THAT DAMNED JUMPING THING IF YOU'D PLEASE!!!!!!Posted Image)

All right, I downloaded the demo again and played through it a few more times. I may have been a little harsh with my first post saying how terrible it was and I was going to cancel my pre-order. I've finally come to grips with the new gameplay mechanics and I'm finding it enjoyable, it still feels a little twitchy, like it needs to be slowed a little as everything is happening so frantically it is sometimes hard to know what is going on. It was just hard to accept the changes because of the fondness I have for the original game and the expansion, but if everything remained the same there would be innovation or improvement. That said, I still really don't like the art style and feel it is too plain. The dialog-wheel I think is an improvement over the original method of speech in the first game. I also dig the way the upgrade menu is handled, I just wish there were more options as there are only a handful of upgrades in each category. It feels like I'll end up maxing out my character too early in the game like in ME2, I wish the level-cap was higher in that game and hope it is here (going from 60 down to 30 was a bit of a letdown). I've experienced none of the glitches I've read about here. The only thing I've had a problem with so far is transitioning from gameplay to cutscenes, it is a bit jarring and sometimes elements of the scenes are missing altogether. When Flemeth shows up, I 'll be fighting, then immediately be having a conversation with her. Never saw the dragon show up and a few lines of dialog were skipped, like I'd shown up in the middle of the conversation, this happened more than once during different interactions. All in all not bad, just not what I was expecting. It'll probably grow on me once I play through the final version.

From what I have read, the combat speed has been reduced a little for the final release.  Still faster than DAO, but not at breakneck like the demo.  The demo is from a build that's old and hopefully those transitions have been cleaned up as well.

Lol Flemeth isn't scary at all. She is way to over the top. The voices are fine, and how the hell can you make a opinion about anyone for such a short time. You basicly get a glimpse into them. The cliches were hilarious though when it came to Velanna and her husband.

My after-demo wishlist

I think it's hard to make a game that will be same wonderful on each platform.

The game needs time, rush is here the worse method. I don't have to get the game "right now!!", i can wait to get unique final product. I can pay higher price for making it especially for minority of players. I love many types of games, but i wish to see something polished i every single detail, (i don't mean with no bugs - every game have some), that requires time.

I also wish to see demo before making game done, to make thread like this useful. Maybe it will be useful for future productions - i hope, but now it's just a research.

This is my opinion and you can disagree.

I'd personally like them to differentiate between the PC and console versions of the game in terms of their UI style.

A console game would have this UI, that makes sense... but not a game on a PC...

I understand you're saving money, but you're also asking us to download your demo by over 1 million unique times.

This is pretty ridiculous as you expect a lot of money from this (and EA does as well), but you aren't going to give the effort outside of what you FEEL you should? What is this... an autocracy?

Having "Level 99" would be a quick and easy way to destroy the RPG.

Only draw backs I saw was the continues-to-be-broken tactics. If there were more than one scourge on the field Rogue Hawke immediately evaded leaving the ability on cool down for the rest of the fight. Mage Hawke would launch a fireball at the starting location of the mobs and of course it just hits dead air. Tactics  will be disabled on all my play throughs.

You can fix both of those problems really, really easily.  First off--increase the number of enemies that have to be attacking your rogue before that rogue will evade.  Secondly, change the fireball condition from "enemies clustered" to something like "X enemies attacking the tank in melee".  That'll make sure that you only throw area effects at enemies who are currently pinned down in melee and not likely to move much in the interim.  It'll also focus fire more.

You have to fiddle with your tactics before you get something you like.  You can't just leave them on defaults and expect reasonable behavior.

Played the demo on PC and pretty much all my fears have come true.

Why is there no isometric view?

The isometric view is superhandy to travel long distances on a map (e.g. through a city to go sell stuff, through a forest you've already cleared,...) and also allows you to place/target area effect spells a lot better than the current 3rd person camera does. If you want proper tactical combat on a PC, isometric is pretty much the best view possible.

Not only is the top-down view gone, the most zoomed out camera view is pretty much unusable. You can't use it to look around corners/obstacles like you would with a isometric view, it is very hard to guess the exact placement of your spells, and the camera angle/distance is way too low/small.

It gets even worse when there is a height difference in the map, like for example the stairs at the end of the demo.
Instead of zooming out, staying in the same relative position to your character, the camera seems to be locked at a fixed height. As a consequence your char basically runs out of the picture...

Why is this warrior/rogue/mage fighting like some emo kid from Devil May Cry?

In the first game weapons seemed to have a realistic weight, size and resulting style of fighting: daggers were quick and nimble, sword and shield let you balance offense and defense, while 2handers were big massive crushers.

In this game this warrior is running around with a huge 2h sword, swinging it around in one hand like it is made out of cardboard. And not only is he swinging it around as if it is a plastic toy, the combat moves are way too fast and they look like they got ripped from Ninja Gaiden or some other action game with flashy over the top attacks.

I can understand the need for closing/charge moves on the melee classes, but if you just let Carver do a Scythe move (i think that is what its called) you'll get flashbacks of Dante or some other mediocre action game or JRPG.

Of course we all know the answer to my questions above: virulent consolitis.
Other symptoms include: oversimplified everything and an ugly interface that looks like it came straight out of Mass Effect.

Its so sad to see the "revamp of the classic PC RPG" philosophy thrown out the window after only 1 game.

Congratulations for burning your PC legacy behind you BioWare. Now you are free to go make mediocre console games. Tell Epic Entertainment the PC gamers said 'hi'.

Quoted for truth.

Fast battles no or little strategy involved and I absolutely hate the combat animation for all the classes.
That's just my personal opinion.

RPG is Role Playing Game which means playing a Role and immersion is the biggest thing in the old days things like Isometric was great as it was as immersive as we can get but now the tech is there to be the character and immerse yourself fully (voiced cut scenes) etc. For me (other then the UI) DA 2 gives me everything I want the combat tactics the cut scenes the voice over (making your char feel like a real person) I loved BG BG 2 etc (I am a real old time RPGer as I have been doing RPG's since PnP ADnD and early days of CRPG). I loved the combat as it is more fast paced and tactics can be used very well (I used pause more often in DA2 demo then all of DA:O) The UI is ok but could have been better (I loved the action bar on pc in DA2 over DA:O the new skill tree system I loved rest of the UI could have been better) Icons were very generic for items but that might have been to keep demo size down. Overall I think this is DA:O on steroids.

I am extremely annoyed by the lack of any dodges/misses.  Every attack must hit now for some reason.  At least there's no active block...

DAO on the PC played the same whether you played it at full ISO or pulled-back like in DA2

don't really get the button mashing part either...

a button masher action rpg is Jade Empire, DA2 is just faster paced, tho the consoles have button mashing it really sucks and isn't fun at all, playing the game like you played the first is actually more fun so i don't get the gripes if an addition you don't like actually sucks anyways

Sold out to who?!!!!  They're a company with 500 employees - They need to make money.  Game development is a big money business these days people.  They want to make games that appeal to as many as possible.  Saying they sold out because they may or may not develop a game that you enjoy or should be like something they made 12 years ago is ridiculous.  Some of the people around here make it seem that they are personally offended by this basic fact - Get over yourselves.  Just a general observation, not a personal attack, spernus.

We can only hope nightmare is significantly harder.  If I can face roll on nightmare, I think I'm going to opt not to purchase the game (gonna rent it first, that's how dire this is), then tell all my friends to pirate it.  (not that they wouldn't be doing that already...Pirate culture is like that, people "steal" games they don't like just to spite the company that makes it.)
