Dragon Age 2 Demo feedback thread

EA has always been the way to kill things... just look at Command & Conquer (Red Alert 3, somewhat C&C3 and of course the abomination that was C&C 4) and any other brand they've bought. The license for Bioware is lucrative so I doubt they'll mess with it too much, but I thought that about C&C as well...

Played the demo on PC and pretty much all my fears have come true.
Why is there no isometric view?
The isometric view is superhandy to travel long distances on a map (e.g. through a city to go sell stuff, through a forest you've already cleared,...) and also allows you to place/target area effect spells a lot better than the current 3rd person camera does. If you want proper tactical combat on a PC, isometric is pretty much the best view possible.
Not only is the top-down view gone, the most zoomed out camera view is pretty much unusable. You can't use it to look around corners/obstacles like you would with a isometric view, it is very hard to guess the exact placement of your spells, and the camera angle/distance is way too low/small.
It gets even worse when there is a height difference in the map, like for example the stairs at the end of the demo.
Instead of zooming out, staying in the same relative position to your character, the camera seems to be locked at a fixed height. As a consequence your char basically runs out of the picture...
Why is this warrior/rogue/mage fighting like some emo kid from Devil May Cry?
In the first game weapons seemed to have a realistic weight, size and resulting style of fighting: daggers were quick and nimble, sword and shield let you balance offense and defense, while 2handers were big massive crushers.
In this game this warrior is running around with a huge 2h sword, swinging it around in one hand like it is made out of cardboard. And not only is he swinging it around as if it is a plastic toy, the combat moves are way too fast and they look like they got ripped from Ninja Gaiden or some other action game with flashy over the top attacks.
I can understand the need for closing/charge moves on the melee classes, but if you just let Carver do a Scythe move (i think that is what its called) you'll get flashbacks of Dante or some other mediocre action game or JRPG.
Of course we all know the answer to my questions above: virulent consolitis.
Other symptoms include: oversimplified everything and an ugly interface that looks like it came straight out of Mass Effect.
Its so sad to see the "revamp of the classic PC RPG" philosophy thrown out the window after only 1 game.
Congratulations for burning your PC legacy behind you BioWare. Now you are free to go make mediocre console games. Tell Epic Entertainment the PC gamers said 'hi'.
Quoted for truth.
Fast battles no or little strategy involved and I absolutely hate the combat animation for all the classes.
That's just my personal opinion.
We can only hope nightmare is significantly harder. If I can face roll on nightmare, I think I'm going to opt not to purchase the game (gonna rent it first, that's how dire this is), then tell all my friends to pirate it. (not that they wouldn't be doing that already...Pirate culture is like that, people "steal" games they don't like just to spite the company that makes it.)
That's not entirely true, and stealing the game doesn't really spite the company as all press is good press.
In any case, torrenting was a lot of times used to try out games to see if they were worthy of buying, sometimes they aren't, but trying to hurt Bioware like that will go largely unnoticed and is just insulting.
Chances are also true that you'll probably like the game after you torrent it and then well... will buy it.
I wouldn't rent it for console, I've already pre-purchased for PC and I want it for the PC not console...
BUT... I'm not so sure about the differentiation between the platforms.

From what I have read, the combat speed has been reduced a little for the final release. Still faster than DAO, but not at breakneck like the demo. The demo is from a build that's old and hopefully those transitions have been cleaned up as well.
Source please.
For the speed - I'm not going through the 200 pages to find it - Someone linked to Laidlaw talking about it. Might have been during the 30 minute Q&A he did.
For the demo build -

Usually (and in this case), a demo build is a few montsh old - once we have a build that's stable, we stick with it simply because you need to test it heavily to make sure it doesn't crash and if you keep switching builds, you aren't given the time to do that.

I've seen some people mention that the demo is based off an earlier version of the game, and this seems to be what was shown back at E3. So I'm hardly going to make judgment calls on graphical glitches and interface bugs on something that is clearly far and away from the final product.
That may indeed be so, but in that case why have they produced a demo which doesn't actually demonstrate the game to its best effect?
Perhaps along with the mandatory warnings at the beginning there should be something along the lines of "Warning: what you're about to experience does not reflect the actual product in terms of graphics, interface and gameplay."
I find it incomprehensible that a company which is presumably trying to drum up business is, if you're correct, using as advertising material something cobbled together from an obsolete development mockup, rather than releasing something that shows the product to its best advantage.

Graphically it does look a little better than Origins (on the xbox at least) - the styling is unusual and will take some getting used to, but I don't dislike it. The combat style is faster paced, but it doesn't look right to me. It seems to be trying to be flashy for the sake of it and it seems a little silly to me.
A demo is a demo though, and although i'm not convinced with the direction that DA2 has gone from Origins, i'll give the full game a chance. After all, alot of the functions were locked in the demo so I've not seen everything the game has to offer yet.

You get the award sir!!
I set up an account just to express my displeasure with the unrealistic fighting style (Everything is secondary when compared to this). In short, It’s very cartoonish/unrealistic: it disengaged me from the world that Bioware created. --See Demon's souls combat as a referential example of combat perfection (but agreeable at a much slower pass than preferred DA). The only skill that I can tolerate in the demo is the mage.
-
By the way. I love Mass Effect 2 (please do not change the formula) Small adjustment/improvements are always welcomed. But unnecessary cartoonish combat that does not fit the world should be avoided.

Don't knock the power of piracy that much. It turned decent games
like ACII into cluster ****s, and gave rise to that abomination known as
"DLC that should have been in the main game", which, inevitably gets
cracked and torrented. it's also the main
reason EA is switching over to mutliplayer games, it's one of the only
true and tested ways to prevent pirates on PCs.
Hilariously, absolutely none of this works, and with the exception of mutliplayer, it generally makes it worse. Waiting 5 days for a torrent is amazing for most high profile games, including ACII, Spore, and other DRM-heavy releases.

These are the thoughts I reached during 2 playthroughs of the demo (male warrior, female mage).
- Text size/formatting too small for an SDTV 4:3 ratio. Seriously, It's next to impossible to see, I have to squint. Perhaps a text formatting option can be added to the menus on a future update? This is a HUGE barrier for me as I really cannot see myself reading any codex entries with this tiny text sizing. I suppose I will have to hook the damn 360 up to my 22 inch monitor.
- When playing through the demo w/ a warrior class, having myself, my brother and Aveline fighting at the same time, if we are positioned correctly, quite literraly 3/4 of the screen (4:3 SDTV) is being taken up by wildly flailing super human sized swords and their speed blur lines trailing behind them. I find this to be hugely visually distracting.
!
XBox 360 with a 4:3 ratio SDTV? You're missing out fella, hook it up to the 22 at least.
Back on topic though, loved the demo. Pace of the combat was excellent, especially the rogue which was just insanely fun. I hade the gfx set to medium on my PC and it still looked awesome, once i turned it up to ultra, real life looked terrible in comparison.
What put it over the edge was the fully voiced Hawke, you get that connection to the character like in Mass Effect. Great job guys, I was expecting a top notch game and you didn't dissapoint. Now I just have to avoid getting fired after march 11.

Everything else ran fine (lol as did witcher, ME1&2 etc never had crashes on my budget DIY rig). Anywayz I think the demo kind of disappointed me at first as it did feel like a console-type genre of constant attacks - but I was pleased by the end of it and wanted to play more.
Somehow, my end feeling is that I want to play it properly - with the inventory enabled before I can lay any real judgement. I love DA Origins so I'll enjoy this a bit, I'm sure...

Second i'll say it was a nice action packed introduction to the game when most rpgs bog you down in red tape and force you to slog through but emowig hawke being the star of the exagerated portion of varrics tale destroyed every bit of immersion and every time I kept looking at the git it irritated me.
Thirdly the combat was fast was and frantic but seemed to have less heft, whacking away on a darkspawn with a two handed sword felt kind of pathetic as it took half a dozen hits while you struck awesome poses in between or shuffled around aveline and carver to get your taps in, also I didn't see one in combat finisher or parry and they're some of my favourite things about the scrapping.
Fourth and perhaps most important the game didn't deviate from the formula of gab, scrap and loot then gab some more, I want to explore and interact with the enviroment instead of just being stuck on one path looking out over some nicely rendered wasteland or eerily quiet city where you can't examine or fiddle with anything. This makes it feel to me like exactly what it is and doesn't get me involved or intrigued.
Fifth i'll pull out a suprise, I could tolerate it and i'll be toddling down to game to grab my preorder on the eleventh because I realise this demo wasn't really catering to a story junky like me who just see's combat as a chore to finish before you get to the meat of the matter but I would say this new form of combat doesn't seem to be an improvement and some of the effects just seemed a tad silly.
I'd personally like a lot less combat overall and more interaction (not just talking) but when we do have to rumble more John Boormans excalibur combat sweaty, bloody and dirty and less of the silly combat vogueing.
There thats more words than i've spoken in my lifetime, so erm take my feedback and do with it as you will.

Well, I'm not optimistic about this game, but that's just excessive. We've just seen a brief demo, which is obviously trying to sell itself on combat rather than story. Take in mind the fact that Dragon Age gave you a fairly predetermined path in terms of "walk this way or that way."

Never try anything new or face the wrath of the internet.
p.s I love how everybody blames EA. The only difference to the game not having them involved would be a game with a lesser budget and one less dead space outfit.

All in all though, I enjoyed it alot, I didn't comment o the new wheel because it was very apparent alot of work went into this as it felt like a great addition to how you can tell when the sarcasm is coming out, anger, or kindness. Though I can tell this has taken the road of mainstream grab like ME2, I have no problem with it, I always welcome change, especially the good kind like these.

Not sure what to make of the demo. Was it fun/entertaining? Sure. Did it feel like Dragon Age? Not really.
I love, love, looooved DA:O and played through it multiple times. I liked ME2 and replayed it twice. I'm scared the voiced protagonist is gonna kill replayability a little bit for me.
I just don't understand why they had to combine facets of ME and DA. They are both great games, but why can't they keep their individual styles? I liked them both for different reasons.
Oh well, I'm keeping my preorder regardless. I'm sure I will like DA2, but not as much as I loved the original.

Command & Conquer 4 is probably the biggest let down, but did anyone have any real hope for it? Red Alert 3, of course that was from EA.
What else...
It's not that BIG a let-down, and I'm keeping my ridiculously 60 dollar priced PC game pre-purchase, but still...
