So they gave us a Japanese combat clone dressed up in marketing words.obie191970 wrote...

for the da2 people that think its worse than the first...answer me this how did you like the fact that there were so many glitches in DA:O?
I prefer glitches to ninja-mages and wizard-rogues teleporting on the battlefield.
your right i love not being able to do some mission or not being able to get items just because i did something before something else. you all r more worried about the fact that the rogue does a ninja move or two. if thats the case then how can someone turn into a damn dragon.

Without Bioware, we will not be able to play a really good rpg game this year (which is Witcher 2 obviously).

Bioware was incorporating action/adventure elements into its games before the partnership with EA. Take Jade Empire: you manually control one character throughout the whole game, all combat is in real time -- and it's fantastic!
You're entitled to be disappointed with the changes made to DA: 2. My point is that you can't lay the blame solely at EA's doorstep.
Jade Empire was Jade Empire though, it was supposed to be a real-time action RPG. Fans of Dragon Age were expecting "Dragon Age" in the sequel, but so far indications are far from that. Take away the PC controls and the names and the game has little if any to do with its predecessor. It's baffling how we've gone from "spiritual successor to Baldur's Gate" to "just another action RPG" in the space of one game. With games like Witcher 2 and Skyrim coming out in 2011, which honestly look much better than the demo I just played, it's hard to be too enthusiastic about DA2.
If not solely, at least a good chunk of it lies there. Brent Knowles was the LEAD designer and clearly he wasn't the one making the design decisions or else he would still be here.
I played the demo version and I am sorely disappointed. The graphics reminded me of a Dark Horse comic book. I pre-orderd the game too and I am unwilling to purchase the game now --for PC-- and waste the $60 or $70 for the game. Although I am going to get charged $10 for non-purchase. Still it's cheaper than $60 or $70. Consoles suck!

Question to the PC Gamers:
How fluid is the combat without the overhead view? I played pretty much every battle in DA:O zoomed out so I could move the party around more easily and place traps and spells accurately.
I've skimmed the thread and couldn't find a PC player that was content with the camera, so this worries me.
I had it max zoomed out and didn't have any trouble placing AOE spells or keeping an eye on the battle field. That said, I played primarily as a mage and I think the ranged characters will have a smoother time with the camera. To me, it wasn't an issue at all. My friend, however, found the camera a bit tricky playing as a rogue, and had to adjust it a lot.

It's perfect for me.
Your abilities will serve to move you around the battlefield smoothly, and your players don't act like they're on roller skates floating around trying to reposition themselves.
Everything is much more fluid. Until coming on here and seeing there wasn't an overhead option, I hadn't tried getting the overhead view because I didn't need it in the demo.
The only time it gets tricky is for a mage trying to judge distance. Warriors and rogues dance about the battlefield smoothly with teleport and scythe abilities.

Never had ANY problems with ANY mission. Plus glitches can be fixed-catastrophic change of graphic and setting vision not.

The reason for this is the lock on system , it is just terrible.
now don`t get me wrong I absolutley love what you guys have done so far and the chages made are a step in the right direction but , this is what is missing and makes the game less enjoyable for me and maybe even a "no buy" for me.
I was hoping melee combat would be more enjoyable in DA2 compared to DAO and while melee is definitely better than before , with the way the camera and locking works it makes it feel very very "button mashy"
when I lock onto something as a melee I want the camera to stay locked onto that mob when I move around , otherwise what`s the point ?
When there are multiple mobs on the screen , moving around only results in you dropping your target for another and another and another and before you know it the "Button mashing' creeps in.
for ranged the system works o.k like it is now but if you really want to make it work my advice to you is :
Take a look at Demon's Souls.. even though the lock on system has some flaws (mostly camera angle at certain points).
Combat in Demon's Souls is nearly as perfect as it can get , it`s easy to focus on a target amongst masses of other mobs ,while still being able to move around freely never losing your lock unless you want to shift it to another target, or move outside of your locking range.
I was hoping DA2's Melee gameplay would be a bit like Demon's Souls but with cool melee skills/cooldowns added into the mix for some awesome combat.
but instead at the moment Melee in DA2 is messy , mashy and chaotic.
DA2 was at the top of my list of "Games I just have to get".
After playing the demo though , if there are no changes to the lock on system ....
It has been moved a bit down ,I'll probable still play it , but once again I wont be able to enjoy melee combat at all.
I'll finish the game once as a mage probably , and then it will collect dus in a corner , while I still grind away soul levels in Demon's souls ..while patiently waiting and dreaming of the pure awesomeness that "Dark souls" will be when I finally pick it up .
So Please please Bioware I beg of you ...make melee players happy and work on it a bit more .
Make melee combat feel as heavy, dangerous and meanigful as it is in Demon's Souls and I will be thankful to you for all eternity !!

Tekman9 ... My point wasn't that Dragon Age should be more like Jade Empire. My reference to Jade Empire was just to demonstrate that Bioware have always shown a fondness for incorporating real-time action into this RPGs. They're not simply succumbing to mass-market pressure. They've ejoyed blending the two genres since before EA were involved.
Yes, Bioware did that for a new IP. You don't force that kind of thing into a series that's already established its own individual style. ME1 was released prior to the acquisition and Dragon Age was basically past the point of no return then.
The sequels to both of those games have seen significant loss of depth and forced "streamlining" that have turned off many fans. However, ME2 still kept itself in the same universe and was pretty much the same game minus various elements. DA2 barely resembles Origins and feels more like a cheap imitation of its sister series than a natural progression.

Demo was underwhelming for sure. Too combat intensive, too flashy, the camera blew and I’m not digging the new art style. Fighting wave after wave of darkspawn mashing the ‘x’ button is somewhat fun (in the manner of GOW), but it doesn’t feel like Dragon Age to me.
You took the words right out of my mouth. It felt way more god of war style than Tacticle. I know bioware likes to mix up gameplay in their series, but if they do this to Mass Effect 3 I will cry.

You will not find a PC player that is happy with the game full stop! not if they have played RPG's like i have over the years. I am a 38 yr old man and have played the best of the. Dragon age origins struck me as superb, right up there with baldurs. This has literally done my head in playing this demo...... cant understand it..........
They are trying to aim for Call of Duty demographic. To make them feel like they are playing a better game they still have some RPG elements(but only few). For instance ME2 was almost purely a shooter game.
I feel your pain-being a 30 year old RPG gamer it saddens me that Japanese combat game clones are now promoted, while no good RPG's are made now.

The demo can be played just as tactically as you played DAO. The difference is that people now have an option for a more direct approach.

My only complaint was that on the PC version, sometimes the videos took a bit to load, and that sort of jerks you out of the immersion a tad. My computer is well above the recommended specs so that shouldn't be the issue. They also didn't scale to the width of my screen, which may or may not be intentional (getting it to actually display in my resolution took some messing, too; I had to tweak settings once already loaded into the game to get it to take.)
Otherwise, I'm super happy I'd already preordered

maybe its my selective memory but the only real glitch I recall was a drop I couldn't pick up because it was too close to a wall.
which reminds me, in the demo Hawke got stuck attacking a rock outcropping instead of going up it to the enemy.
the stuff I posted I didn't like I already knew about - but was reserving judgement. The dialogue change is hugely disappointing to me.
