PC version here

What i dont like? The fact you released a demo that doesnt work. I cant even enjoy it on my eyefinity set-up thanks to wonderfull bugs like your hotbar not lettign you equip/use spells.

how can you release a demo for a sequal to game that was used to show off eyefinity and not even have it work? Ive seen your guys "we know about the problem and have it fixed in retail" line, i hope you do cause right now all this demo tells me is your getting lazy and just starting to release console ports instead of grade A games like dragon age was.

be nice to atleast get a demo patch to fix eyefinity support, and before trolls come in here saying "oh well go to single monitor, eyefinity is just a gimmick" bull, I really enjoy the extra play vision of eyefintiy and the difference between eyefinity and single monitor is painfully obvious to me now. And any developer not willing to support things like eyefinity properly dont get my money.

Guys, I know this is hard to believe, but, in general, they don't care what complaining 'fans' have to say over what, you know, actual game designers have decided. The internet has been around long enough for Devs to know when to totally ignore end-of-the-world whining online. They release the demo now to show you how the new combat system works, not because they are going to change anything based on your arbitrary reactions.

After 6 3/4 playthroughs with each class and gender I could nitpick a few things like voice acting or changes in the darkspawn models. But truthfully these will not be that much of a concern. I will however point out that In two of the playthroughs I did extensive pausing in combat to control the party and in both of those playthroughs the mini map became corrupted and in one of them the game crashed at the death of Carver...hence the 3/4. All in all though i have to say.

Seriously, the people who like the demo seem to be far more zealous than those who dislike it.

LOL

What thread are you reading?

Over the past 200 pages I've seen people:

1) proclaim the death of  Bioware
2) cancel their pre-orders
3) lament about the tragic state of the RPG genre
4) Urge everyone to jump ship and go to the Witcher boards to be "educated"
5) Urge people who actually liked the demo  to "go f*ck themselves", or "grow up" or, "Go play a jrpg" or "go play call of duty"  or  simply "go away".
6) Proudly announce that they're Graphic designers and that by their professional prognostication, Bioware has committed the ultimate sin.
7) Gleefully toss out make-believe statistics that "prove" that Bioware has intentionally alienated 3.2 million Dragon Age Fans.

All  because of a friggin DEMO.    The Nerdrage-fueled hyperbole on this thread is the biggest I've seen since Fox cancelled the X-files.

Mind if I quote this for truth? I'll be plastering this all over the social sites. You'll see. :police:

Lets just stop this ****** for tat. The thread is also full of rabid bioware fans, that cannot understand that feeback on the demo means good or bad. And have carried on arguments for pages over ranting and raving because someone didn't like what Bioware did. YOu would think they insulted their mother. I would guess that almost every Bioware mod post in this thread is to remind fans that someone who gives less that stellar feedback for the demo should be allowed to do so.

Get some perspective.

For the record, this is a day one purchase, or at the very least day 10 purchase, after I beat Warhammer 40k's new release:)

Given the utter BS most of the "alienated fans" here talk, can anybody really blame Bioware if they do just aim to maximise sales rather than cater to the "fan"base? I mean "lots of sales, great reviews" is something Bioware can actually aim for and realistically achieve (and it so happens, normally requires making a good game that people will love), as opposed to "making sure every whiner on the boards gets precisely what he wants". If you factor in that the BSers here will ultimately vote with their wallet and buy the thing anyway, it seems undeniable that Bioware will get a more honest assessment of the merits of the game by counting the dollar bills than by checking the message boards.

So go for it Bioware. Just sell as many games as you can.

I've played the demo through with all classes and sex combinations now so I thought I'd offer some feedback.  Overall I'm positive about the changes and optimistic about the game, so good job.

Things I liked:

The framed narrative looks really promising and I hope its used liberally, even without the exaggerated combat.  I was invested in several characters quite quickly.  Male and Female Hawk are both good for me and I'm looking forward to meeting characters outside of the demo such as Fenris.

There are some nice facial animations and it really helped transmit emotion and backed up the voice acting nicely.  The new combat system retains strategic combat, which I prefer, and abilities and spell animations are much improved.

Things that struck me:

The camera system on the PC isn't working for me.  I usually play OTS at about 80% zoomed in.  In DA 2's camera system, at that level of zoom, all the action takes place in the lower 40% of the screen and the interface also occupies this space.  Combat becomes a dense and complicated experience.  This is remedied by toggling the interface and programming input devices.  It's too late now but I would have flipped the interface and moved everything from the bottom to the top and vice verse.

The new pace to combat works well for me with Rogues but I'm going to have to adjust to seeing a Mage move like that -- Magi seem to operate more like Warlocks now?

I'm looking forward to the game and think its going to be a winner.

Bioware was right to make the fight more intense, dynamic, and nervous. The players would complain that there is not much change compared to dao.

Critics even more. Needed change, and not stagnate with a system that was already  redundant in awakening. It was already beginning to tire. Repeat the same system with better graphics, I realize now that it is not sure what I wanted.

Dao was the first episode, so everyone was forgiving. But for a second episode, I doubt that everyone can be satisfied with a similar style. The turn is very good, I've played, replayed, now I love the fight.

I remember a huge amount of people had found boring fights in DAO.

I repeat, repeat parts, put the story aside, and try every class, to turn away from old habits.

For DA3, need to continue on that way, with a little less ridiculous cartoon animations, such as teleportation, (sorry but the thief I will not do)

Ya know, I really don't care about each new game doing something new. I do realize I am alone in this. But when I find an RPG game or open world shooter game I like, all I really want out of that franchise is new advnetures or new areas to explore.

Am I alone in this? I don't really need X game company to build a brand new engine every game expansion. I don't really care if I can max out the graphics and show the wizzbang stuff to my friend that will never see it again.

I"d have been happy to see 3 years of DLC and expansions out of DA1.

Or hell, see 3 years and expansions out of DA2.

Can't we just do that, and not have to reinvent a game every 6 months?

they sucked EA dick,

there's no debate to be had,

i don't blame them for it,

but i do think it's sad that some of you think this game is their vision,

and that some of you even think that EA is not a factor at all,

hollywood movies are governed by producers, pretty much exclusively,

why would games now be any different?

I am not sure if this was noticed or mentioned anywhere in the forums. So apologies if it is. Few things that I have noticed so far in various game footages and also in demo iteself, is how females in general walk/run. I do not like it at all, they more look like a prostitute trying to run away from rain, sorry for being so blunt. I thought this might be just in the demo, but latest game footages also showing the same thing.

PS. I have been asked to submit this to feedback section so here it is:)

Gonna be typing out my feedback as I play along...

Chose a male rogue, nice looking armor ;p

Texture on that torch is kinda meh for such a closeup shot.

The facial expressions of the dwarf and cassandra are stiff...the mouth movement isn't on track with the speech.

At the first dialogue wheel...graphics are awesome, a big improvement. The new darkspawn look is interesting.

Holy crap the combat is amazing. Really loving it, the evasion adds some much needed depth into the combat and the abilites are fun and easy to use.

Back to the dwarf...mouth movments are better, but the stiff facial expressions are still present.

At the customization screen, although its locked you can see the same sliders from the first game, awesome, if its not broke, don't fix it..

Talking to family, voice acting is awesome and the facial expressions are better than the cutscenes.

Aw, my abilities are gone :( o well, just lvled up, I'm liking the attribute screen, its good to see explinations for what stats do what, opens up the game to new players.

Liking the layout of the ability trees as well. Good to see that abilities are being upgraded and we're not just getting 80 different spells.

Ooo a templar...and my sister is an apostate...ackward ._.

Hawke's cheekbones look really odd.

Gave my sister the heal ability. 1 minute cooldown is worrysome, are we going to be able to be actual healers or is it going to be "heres a buff...i'll give you a tiny heal in a minute."?

Don't have to worry about getting lost, only one way to go...hopefully the pathing opens later on, even just a little bit.

Can't access the inventory screen, but it looks largely the same as the first game...BIGGER BAGS! YAY! :D

Taking a gander at all the menus...A HIDE HELMET OPTION?!?!?!? MDOAWNOITHFEJWOEFJ YES!!!!

UI is starting to feel cluttered with all the pop ups/large map. Seems it would of been better if the ability hotkeys and portraits where fully in the corner and not sticking out. Mini map is way too big.

Combat is still awesome, really liking the rogue so far.

Ogre SMAAAAASH!!!! That looks like it hurt.

A cooldown on health pots? Wow...If theres a nightmare difficulty its going to be...nightmarish.

Our tank actually FEELS like a tank with stonewall on, the damage mitigation is nice.

Ogre dead...liking the new emphasis on tanking correctly, should be fun to play as a warrior.

Old face looks less old...where was that armor before? :P

Back to dwarf...his mouth is still bothering me.

Skip ahead in story, i'm sure theres going to be a fair amount of gameplay in place of this skip in the full game.

Judging by the mini map, Kirkwall looks open...awesome...lots of pillars for evironmental strategy.

Last boss fight was fun, I liked the strategy that the stairs offered for Varric and my sister.

Overall, I really liked it. The combat is an improvement in the sense that it maintains and strengthens the strategy asect of the game, while at the same time offering a much more action driven experience for those who want one.
While i'm disappointed that the same UI mistake was repeated (put that stuff in the corner guys, I want to see whats going on!) I like the layout of the menus and the new hide helm option...I like seeing my characters face without losing stats :P
The biggest problem was my most mentioned. The facial movements. They aren't in a good state judging by the demo, way too stiff and mouth movement isn't fitting the speech about 40% of the time. It makes me want to turn on subtitles and just read the text along with the speech so i'm distracted from the mouth.

The demo got me really looking forward to release, I can't wait to play it.

Had it ever occured to you that people here actually like the new Dragon Age more? That maybe they are not protecting Bioware, but they are in fact genuinely impressed by the demo?

Christ, the DA forums are turning into the Mass Effect forums..

While I'm sure EA was a factor in the rather tight deadline, I refuse to believe that people actually think that EA hovers over every single dev, controling every single facet of the game's production.

so what do you think EA do all day?
what would you do if you were financing a game that somebody else was making?
would you leave them to it? or would you hover?

I encourage anyone on pc to fire up DA:O after playing the demo, and then tell me something wasn't lost. The demo is just bad. I hope it isn't representative of the final game, because I'm getting the distinct feeling Bioware may have made a misstep here. Case in point: ME2. For all its divisive aspects, ME2 still feels like it takes place in the Mass Effect universe. It still retains much of the original atmosphere, visuals, and yes, even some of the writing style. In contrast, the DA team appears to have catapulted their sequel so far past 'innovation' that the only resemblance it holds to its precursor is combat.

DAO fan. Played the game for years. Played the PS3 demo.

Good:

- I actually enjoy combat. It's been streamlined on the consoles. I hope that it does provide a challenge on the PC.
- The art direction. This time around the armor looks like very intricate. It looks like it actually took a craftman more than a day to, well, craft.
- The story. It feels like dragon age and it has my interest. Well, at least from the demo.
- Made both mages and two-handed swords more fun to play with. Kudos.

Bad:

- The framerate. Jeez, I have never played anything this bad on my PS3. Every time you navigate through the menu the framerate slows to crawl. Everytime the battle flows into a cutscene it stops to load. Hell, sometimes in the middle of the cutscene it stops to load or it becomes choppy. Way to break the immersion.

- The graphics don't look that improved. It seems that most of the improvement has come from the new art direction more than anything. Hawke's brother looks straight out of DAO's character creation. How long ago did that game come out now? Two years now? I'd be nice to at least have the graphics be up to par with Mass Effect 2.

- The menu. It looks too sterile for a fantasy game. It might work for a sci-fi game but not for a "dark fantasy" game. It just looks rushed.

So far I'm not entirely impressed. I will probably wait for several recommendations to get his game. It's a shame too because I loved the first game to pieces.

Already posted my main feedback on the console version; here a few thoughts on the PC version:

  • PC version looks better in general than
    the PS3 version
  • UI is very tidy
  • Console version is more fun to
play; in the PC demo, I kept forgetting I could not zoom
out the camera - very irritating
  • Some of the eyebrow movements
look like a mad puppeteer is yanking the strings; Isabela's lock of
hair doesn't match the rest of it in either version
  • Hope Isabela unlocks a new outfit later
    in the game

Malagar the Slayer wrote...

1. When a game wins "Game of the Year", it does so for a reason.  In the case of Dragon Age Origins, it was game of the year for a LOT of reasons . . . many of which - it appears - you guys tossed into the proverbial trash so you could create Street Fighter in Ferelden.  Sequels to successful games do not have to be completely revamped.  The first game rocked. Give us what made DAO great with a new storyline and new characters and some additional skills and talents.  All in all, the fight sequences were silly, cartoonish and childish, with all the (poorly animated) darkspawn blowing up and being cut in half and such nonsense. It appears the combat was designed with the 14 year old and under crowd in mind.

2. An RPG without much of RP is just a G. The conversation system adapted in DA II doesn't cut it for me and I don’t see how it will work for quality PC/NPC RPG interaction.  It is a letdown.  What drew me in to DA: Origins was the emotional involvement, relationships, friendships and intensity of the interactions with NPCs.  Without that, it is just another hack and slash game.  When I chose a conversation option on the wheel, I never got what I was expecting. Hawke says something pithy that sort of has something to do with the few choices listed. Let’s see, do I choose the touchy-feely play nice response, the comedic/aloof response, or the violent psychopath response? I would rather go back to my character NOT speaking than use the conversation system I experienced in the demo . . . especially since Hawke didn’t actually ever say what I chose anyway.

3. The animation seemed to move better but the actual artwork is not very good (and I am being kind here). The people look more cartoonish and much less realistic than they did in DAO. This may actually be a graphics issue, since I could play DAO on high definition mode and in this game it appears I am stuck in medium def mode.   Unfortunately I have a feeling it is more of a style issue. After I finished the demo a couple times, I went back and booted up DAO and was stunned at the difference in artwork. DAO – the landscape, the people, the attention to detail, the visual environment as a whole – was really well done. The new DA II artwork “style” – if that what it is – is not very impressive. Of course, another person might very well have just the opposite opinion here.

4. In the demo I could hardly hear the characters speak, especially so in the case of Varek and the inquisitor. I had to put the voices on 10 and the music and sound effects on 1 or 2, then crank up my speakers all the way just to hear what people were saying. Even then I couldn’t hear everything that was said. And when I clicked on the Templar, words appeared over his head but I never actually heard his voice (except during the mini movies). I have the latest driver for my sound card, so I am not sure if this is a demo problem or something I will experience in the actual game as well.

5. In general, if this demo really represents what the game will be/feel/play like I am sorry I pre-ordered it back in December.  I was REALLY looking forward to DA II coming out on the 8th, but now - not so much.  Sorry for the harsh criticism. But that is how I feel.

I agree with most of this. DAO was successfull on many fronts yet it seems like Bioware hate their own game. So many changes were not necessary and DA2 could have been a fantastic sequel without them.

My feedback on the PC version:

Technical:

-Couldn't use the tactics system. I'd click on the same thing and different menus would pop up different times. I was fine with the DAO tactics menu, I could not make sense of what was going on in this one.

-Expected better graphics. I know its a demo, but graphics seemed a step up from DAO but a step down from ME2.

-When in combat, I would click on the portraits to switch control of characters. Worked fine sometimes, but would sometimes switch to the level up screen. Vice versa would also occur. Very frustrating.

Aesthetic:

-Liked the B&W artistic style of the load screens/parts of cut scenes. classy.

-Music's good. Tad repetitive, but good.

-Combat, especially with the rogue, seemed less like a fantasy action film, more like some weird anime/kung-fu movie. I see a lot of people liked it, so maybe I'm missing something, but the constant hya! hya! snik snik snik snik hya! seemed silly to me.

-I love violent games, but the buckets of blood lose a lot of their wallop when my lvl 1-6 refugee and his sister can mow down like 30 baddies w/out breaking a sweat (and I mean after the 'mythos' intro, I get how that part is supposed to be exaggerated).

-I just had a black background for the cutscenes with the orlesian chantry babe and the dwarf. Was distracting. Made me think they were in some sort of dream, or afterlife, or something. Just a torch on a wall behind one of them would have been better.

-So I get that a lot of guys like these games. And guys like babes. But why does every female character have DD breasts and cleavage down to her belly button? Even the main character's mom was some sort of cougar. I mean...really?

Overall the game seemed fun. Sorry if I'm more con than pro in my feedback, that's just how I roll. And IMO Bioware is the only big gaming company that seems to care about writing and clever storytelling, so that alone means the game has my dollar, even if all of my qualms are ignored.

I played the PC version multiple times; I played as a rogue at least twice, and as a warrior and mage once each.

Combat worries me a little. It feels too automated at times compared to the micromanagement I did in Origins; I miss the feeling of maneuvering a character into a backstab or the ideal place for an AOE attack. That said, I've been replaying Origins on Hard, so comparing that to the first hour of DA2 on Normal is unfair.

The controls and interface are, for the most part, as good as they can be. Some abilities, like Evade, don't quite feel right as hotkey abilities, but that's probably just me being picky. I do miss the tactical camera and wish that it hadn't been removed.

The acting seems less consistent this time around. Kate Mulgrew really kicks unbelievable amounts of ass, but I thought Bethany sounded apathetic at times. I'm glad that, unlike Mass Effect, we have a competent male voice this time around, though he does sound a little too gruff and (occasionally) monotone for my taste.

The dialogue system is okay. I prefer Origins', but this works well enough. I thought the "profiling" to auto-determine Hawke's responses worked fairly well, but I don't really think that taking control away from the player is a good thing.

I love the new art style. It's genuinely beautiful and unique, and I look forward to seeing more of the locations and characters.

Bugs were my biggest problem with the demo. I couldn't finish my first or third playthroughs due to crashes. I also had an issue where I couldn't issue any orders to Bethany, aside from movement; this could potentially be a gameplay issue that I failed to understand.

Overall, the demo was decent, and I'm looking forward to playing the full game. There are some problems, but it could still very well be a great game.
