Haha. What? Fox News? Ohh, I get it. Because we disagree I must be one of those ignorant, crazed tea party 'Publicans! I love it when people use their political alignment as a platform for intellecutal condescension. Shows how inflated their sense of opinion is. If you would actually read my post instead of getting in a tizzy because I disagreed with you maybe you'd better understand what I'm saying. Which is--

Your making a judgement on an entire dialogue system based on 4 conversations you had in the demo. Isn't that a little premature? Not to mention the fact that there are several occassions where you are offered morally ambiguous responses (conversations with the 3 circular arrows). As for the "bewbs" my point wasn't whether or not they'd deflate but the but that is it really that serious? Are large boobs THAT distracting that they could turn you off of what could be an engrossing story?

Now, as for my character/interaction statement. You basically said that Bioware is moving away from what it always did best but only cited complaints about the dialogue wheel and breast size. My point was characterization and story telling are what Bioware does best but you made no complaint on either of those topics.

Oh, yeah. Palin for President! Wooooo!

I was referring to your taking something I said and twisting it to the extreme before arguing a counter-point with the Fox News joke.  Kinda like how you just took the Fox News remark I made and twisted it to mean I'm being some pretentious liberal douchebag with an "inflated opinion."  In my opinion, multiple facets of the game are being devolved.  This is all I've been saying from the beginning.  The dialogue mechanics are more basic than they were in Origins.  You have three options: #1) The Good Guy, #2) The Funny Guy, and #3) The Bad Guy.  While there were not always a plethora of options in previous games, there were enough to cover a broad range of choices that went beyond black & white and into the shades-of-grey domain.  As for the female proportions?  Yes, they are that distracting.  Would you enjoy the game as much if all the characters had clown noses?

This thread is called "Dragon Age 2 Demo feedback thread."  That's what I'm doing: giving my personal feedback on the Demo.  I don't know why this offends you, or any one else, but that's where it begins and where it ends.  Maybe the game will be entirely different.  I doubt it, but I don't deny it's possible.

Okay, I'm going to slip out of my cave here and show my console-ignorance, as I am a dedicated PC gamer (not an elitist, I just prefer the handling of keyboard and mouse to a controller) My usage of consoles is limited to an occasional test of the games that come out on them from a friend's xbox months before the PC so that I can decide if I want to keep an eye on the release date for that particular game.

I've noticed a lot of complaints about A key mashing. As I haven't noticed a similar activity when playing the demo on the PC, I have to ask what activity the mashing of the A key is referring to. The closest I can come to is possibly having to choose a new target? On the PC the character auto attacks in between the triggered abilities, and I have to manually choose a new target once my current one dies.

I'm an oldschool gamer (started on Atari and Commodor 64), and I did use consoles up until my PS2 got stolen a month after I bought it.  My view on games is that they don't have to be "just like DnD/Tolkien/PreviousStudio'sGame/ect" in order to be good.  Personally, my enjoyment of a game is the same way I base my enjoyment of a book or movie.  Did the story grab me and make me want to find out what happens next?  If the answer is yes, then it was good for me.  I see so many people saying "It's different, so it must be bad!" I usually just shake my head and think that if things didn't change and grow, we'd still be playing Pong.

In terms of critique,
All in all, I'm enjoying the new combat system.  My only real dislike is the dialogue wheel. And I don't really mind the CONCEPT of the wheel or the truncated responses it gives. I just don't really care for the wheel itself. I would rather have the wheel's options (even the little hints it gives) pop up like the responses in DA:O did with numbered options so that I can choose it with my number pad instead of having to use the mouse to continue the dialogue.

Please note, I am not saying I want Hawke's responses spelled out word for word what s/he's going to say. I like everything about the dialogue wheel EXCEPT the wheel itself.

Just played the demo and I am so disappointed with it - Big Time! And I don't want anyone telling me it's just a demo and the full version will be better. The feel and enchantment that made the original is no longer present at its core in Dragon Age 2.

So based on the game sample demo alone, I have it say it totally sucks. I am a Dragon Age Origins lover and I loved it for the many elements that made it really stand out, immersive and special. To name a few, these elements would be supporting pausing and tactical (slower/realistic) combat, you could burn your team mates with your fire spells so you had to use the pause button a lot!, unique avatar player creation/development, etc. But now in Dragon Age 2 Demo, they threw away all these key elements and made the game a hack and slash genre in its core. How do I know this? Well the characters now move so quickly and exaggeratedly in the demo that it began feeling like GoD of War, Devil May Cry, etc. No no need to really pause the game now and be careful because you no longer burn your team members with your spells. So keep sending those rain of fire balls anywhere and everywhere, as fast as you can to kill the wave upon wave of endless hack and slash enemies coming out at you!!!! Also, you really don't need to use the pause button now and use tactics, simply run up to your enemies and hack and slash them quickly like in God of War. This hack and slash is soo supported in Dragon Age 2 that character movements and special movements are soooo exaggerated to compliment this fast action pace! Yuck! I play Dragon Age Origins for its realism and story in a Fantasy setting. I don't want to be reminded I am playing a fast pace action game like God of War or Dynasty Warriors. This totally breaks the spell. If I wanted to play hack and slash games I'd play those games instead.

And what happened to the character creation? I want to be able to create my own character, level him up and make a history with him through his adventures. I don't want to live in someone else's shoes! By playing as Hawk we lose all those little touches that make the character totally unique and tailored to you. yeah yeah so Dragon Age 2 is after all a story being told, but i'd give that up any time to be able to create my own personal character. Usually only hack and slash game skip this and they make players play an already defined ready made character. Oh wait Dragon Age 2 is hack and slash now - no surprise....

All in all I am disappointed with the sample demo that really focused on the big changes in combat. I hope I won't be disappointed with the full version when it comes out. Bioware/ EA please don't make this a hack and slash game (no point in begging release is around the corner) but I know it's money that you guys are after so enjoy the great profit you'll make from console players (a lot are into hack and slash) and bye bye Original Dragon Age. It was fun!

Given the utter BS most of the "alienated fans" here talk, can anybody really blame Bioware if they do just aim to maximise sales rather than cater to the "fan"base? I mean "lots of sales, great reviews" is something Bioware can actually aim for and realistically achieve (and it so happens, normally requires making a good game that people will love), as opposed to "making sure every whiner on the boards gets precisely what he wants".

If you weren't so busy spouting nonsense you would have noticed that Origins did have lots of sales and great reviews.

You seem to be under the assumption that the first game was such a massive failure that it needed to be changed to pander to the lowest common denominator.

Platform: PC

Based on the demo alone, the following items raised concern for me.  I realize some of these may change in the final product but this is my feedback so far:

Disliked:
- some of the artistic direction (darkspawn animations/textures stand out the most)
- lack of isometric camera and ability to zoom out
- what appears to be reduced talent options
- arcade style hack and slash - both pace and style
- new dialogue wheel - I liked not knowing how what I said in DA:O would be received
- lack of choosing race/background

Additional comments:
I'm an old school pc rpg fan (Baldur's Gate 1/2, Icewind Dale 1/2, Planescape Torment *favorite*), and DA:O brought back a lot of the elements that I enjoyed in those classic games. The direction being taken with DA2 appears to be moving away from the classic pc rpg style that I like.

I realize some of the changes were due to design decisions, such as the loss of zooming out so that they could increase the graphical quality.  In this instance, I would have preferred gameplay over graphics.  I'm also guessing they removed some of the character creation options (dwarf/elf/background) to allow the voice work for the champion.  As an rpg, I would find it more immersive to go without the voice and stick with the DA:O style character creation.

I did not pre-order the game and based on the demo have decided to hold off to follow the reviews and feedback the final product receives.  For those that are happy with the new direction the game is taking, enjoy.  I'm thankful Bioware made DA:O even if I don't get DA2 and I'm sure sooner or later another game will come along more fitting to my tastes.

My 2 cents (playing PC version). It looks great overall. As far as I can tell from the demo it IS pretty much "Dragon Effect 2" as many people expected it would be. I really liked almost everything but the pace of the combat. Many people keep saying it was "frantic", I would call it more like "spastic" (and I do not consider it a positive feature). Is there any way to put in a knob where we can control the "turn time" or whatever it's called these days?

Thanks, RH

I desperately want to play the demo, but I keep getting errors when I try to run it :/ It tells me that the file "d3_dx9_43.dll" cannot be found whenever I hit play from the menu screen. Anybody know a fix? I've already tried uninstalling and re-downloading.

You can feel however you like about Dragon Age: Origins and Dragon Age II, but DA:O was a throwback in many ways. BioWare can't only take inspiration from games that came out 10-20 years ago. Dragon Age II is an attempt to keep those elements that make DA:O good while still retaining freshness in art and gameplay.

That's a worthy goal.

Not for one second do I think that is not a worthy goal. It is. It is the right attitude to have. However, there is a good way and a bad way to do this.

I strongly believe, that DA:O had so much of what made the old games great, but advanced them with modern graphics (in comparison to BG) and some modern mechanics (programmable tactics, MMO set ups for example). This was a step in the right direction (imo). Sure some people hate any kind of change, I am not one of them. It did enough streamlining, spell numbers and skills were greatly reduced from BG and the D&D universe for example.

All they needed to do was improve on this formula, not change it drastically.

I think a lot of the reason they felt the need to go in the opposite direction were the issues with the console version of the game, which I have to admit, was unplayable for me. I bought it for PS3 but after trying the PC version on my ancient laptop that ran it at about 20 FPS on the lowest settings (and basically needed to game reboot every 20 minutes), I never looked back. That's how much of a difference there was in the experience. I later bought a new PC just to play the game, and its inevitable sequels (well I use it for work as well but it was an added incentive!)

I think the consoles deserved better. If I hadn't had an option to play it on PC I would have given up or been really bitter too. But I honestly think there was a way to achieve this without moving so far away from the traditional basis of what made the game great. To me, all that really needed to happen was:
  • a more high quality port to the consoles, which was was a last minute decision anyway and not even done in house (I think?)
  • simply placing the camera back to 1 step before the fully zoomed in view on the PC. I just kept saying this to myself after switching to the PC. I thought, "why was it so hard for them, to just let the consoles zoom out ONE STEP". It would have improved the ability for a more strategic way of playing so drastically
  • Scrapping of the radial menu. Bottom line is, it's a very poor UI device. It might look boring, but FF has had horizontal expanding menus for skills/abilities for a long time, and it is a logical interface that console gamers are used to using. Point is, it is tried, tested and successful. Why this was not the direction they took, I have no idea
  • targetting enemies could have been done via the d-pad which would auto pause on press
  • conversations, well, this is hard, but here's an idea, user controlled font resizing? If websites coded in simple javascript, HTML and CSS can do it, I see no reason why this can't be done using C (or whatever language they are building the game in).
With just these 5 SIMPLE changes, coupled with a bit more colour and life to the world, I think DA2 would have been like DA:O but better on consoles. Nothing else, as far as the game mechanics, needed to change drastically. It would have pleased both crowds. It would have gotten as good as, if not better reviews than the first (as long as the writing/actual game was of the same quality). It would have sold a lot of units.

Sadly, I feel that this kind of approach would have taken time, consideration and thought. I don't think, with a 1 even 1.5 year development cycle, that this could have been achieved. It really comes across as obvious, that DA2 has been a little rushed. They saw the sales on the console, yet they saw their internal metrics as well. They saw the earning potential of the franchise, but knew they had to change something.

My main complaint is, I don't think they gave themselves enough time to think about how to bring about this change, indeed, they even admitted that the success of DA:O took them by surprise, so in essence they'd already thought it was going to tank and this was the attitude that was pobably in their mind when they started development on the sequel.

Personally, I'm just really sad to see the spiritual successor to Baldur's Gate be taken away from us after only one game.

While I'm sure EA was a factor in the rather tight deadline, I refuse to believe that people actually think that EA hovers over every single dev, controling every single facet of the game's production.

so what do you think EA do all day?
what would you do if you were financing a game that somebody else was making?
would you leave them to it? or would you hover?

EA is EA. BioWare is BioWare. Separate staffs. Separate responsibilities. Separate job descriptions and skills. Somehow, I highly doubt that EA is telling BioWare how to do concept art.

The only thing I don't like is is the speed of the basic attack animations. Too fast in my opinion. It's hard to appreciate the cool animations and it makes you press the attack button a lot faster which gets tiring especially during fights against enemies with high health. But I feel more in control during fights instead of feeling like I'm giving orders to my own character.

Bioware works for EA, EA couldn't give a **** about concept art, they just just bluster about what they want delivered, and if bioware knows what's good for them bioware gives them what they want, that's how the biz works nowadays, it's big money, it's like film, it's not like how it used to be at all

Ok, I'll make this short and sweet.
I can't get into this demo because <b>the text is <i>too small.</i></b>  My eyeballs were pieces of stone after straining so hard to read the damn dialogue.

After glancing through some of the posts here, I see I'm not the only one alone. I'm hoping this is just a glaring oversight that won't be present in the final product. Otherwise, I'm saving my money for something else. I really don't want to drop an extra $200 for an HDTV when my current tv still works fine.

First of all: I can't wait to get my friggin' fingers on the retail version. Seriously.

Loved the new style of combat, loved it. So nice to see proper, fast swings instead of the slow and cumbersome "can you stand still for a couple of seconds, I need to hack your arm off" pace of DAO(I loved playing melee in DAO too, this is just better is all!).

Choppy dialog, skipping voiceacting at times...thinking that's just the demo, because the combat didn't chop at all.

Liking the new armor-styles. Even the somewhat recycled ones, like the splintmailish thing that Hayder wears in the last fight looks stylish as hell!

Loving the new abilities trees, had some trouble "confirming" my choices tho(back and confirm buttons didn't work, more demo trouble I expect, no big thing).

See alot of people griping over the sexed up females...I don't care :D Aiit, Isabella looked abit over the top, but we get to put other armor on her if we wanna? And just because they have more sway they walk like hookers? gtfo here with that nitpicking crap!

In closing: Can't frikin' wait for this. Gonna have to do another Origins/Awakening playthough now just to keep the HUNGER at bay!

I loved the demo, only thing that I noticed and didn't particularly like is the length :D

Besides that, Idk if I am just not adept at the new mechanics, but when I aim at something I am not sure what I am aiming at because everything has the health bars over their heads.

Can't wait for my copies to arrive :D

demo is amazing.  This will quite possible be the best WRPG ever made.

Only cons I had were the following:

- Archer issue where there is no dagger rendered on archer melee, also is no quiver.  Assuming this is a demo only thing.  Missing bow string does not bother me because it would be hard to see at camera distance any way.

- Dual Wield rogue is too bouncy during combos.  Needs to be toned down some in DA3.

I just finished the demo and I have to say it was fun but I just felt like there was something missing. although I cant put my finger on it at the moment. I did like the art style and the dialogue. that was really fun to play with. there is one thing I wish we could have tested and that would be character creation. but I guess I will have to wait. also does anyone know if dragon age 2 will have a toolset, or not?

Uh...you would be surprised. Just take a look at EA's history: Westwood, Bullfrog, Pandemic (you know, Bioware's sister studio) were all competent teams that somehow took a nosedive the moment EA got involved.

EA's detrimental effect on developers is a well-documented reality.

I got the demo for the PC version, and I thought it was awesome. I'm even more hyped for this game than before.

I just wish we could've gotten a sneak peak at some of the other characters/companions. But I guess we'll just have to wait until the release of the actual game. Not too long now!
