Still can't understand how any DA:O fan could possibly like this demo.
As for me I'll wait for Witcher 2 then.

i downloaded the Dragon Age 2 demo, cause i just beat dragon age this morning.
After downloading, installing, and finally clicking play an error appears saying:
"The program can't start because d3dx9_43.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem."
But for reasons unknown to me, re-installing doesn't change the error and neither does the configuration settings. Nor is there any mention of it anywhere i can find.
Can anyone help me?

I hold them to their own standards as well. And after playing their games for the past 14 years I'm not going to give them crap about subpar DLC, which I could care less about. I don't need Metacritic to tell me that Awakenings scored less than DAO - I enjoyed the hell out of both of them.
And I'm also not going to go balistic every time that they make a change in a serious. Especially over a demo. Personally, I would have loved to see some of the stronger RPG elements carried over from ME1 to ME2. But, it was a hell of a game regardless - The story was a bit weaker, but the art direction and combat were better. Have they gone too far with the changes in DA2? Tough to say from the demo - The new combat has both it's strong and weak points. One thing I do know is that Bioware releases top notch games. Throw them into whatever category you want. RPG, Shooter hybrid, Hack N slash. I don't care - I know I'll get a quality game with a great story. 14 years has taught me that.
I guess lot of it boils down to target age group. Origins was targeted at mature audience, the issues were adult, the reading was intense and philisophy/history of game required major investment from players. DA2 is targeted at much younger audience. I am sure they will enjoy the new combat and they will love the game. I was disappointed because I am not used to this type of console fighting and fast action. Uh... to each his own.

Wow you got to be a really big snob to say that.
It wouldn't surprise me if the majoriy of Biowares current "audience" they are aiming to please would probobly say Planescape: Torment sucks for some utterly inane reason.
I doubt that. They didn't play it. And that's the problem from the business perspective. It had gameplay that wasn't appealing to the vast majority of gamers. It was very niche in its targetted audience and I expect a lot of classic RPG fans only started playing it when they heard about it through word of mouth (me being one of them).
Nowadays triple-A developers create games that cater to a wider audience. Why not? They can still make the game good, they just need to make it appeal to a broader range of gamers. The essence of the RPG is the decisions you make and the consequences of those actions. From what I understand, DA2 is going to maintain that level of RPGness that was in DA:O and Awakenings, but with less wandering around, holding tab, clicking every dead corpse and stupid little object within sight.
I just don't understand how you can extrapolate a weak role-playing experience with this demo.

The audio was terrible. The music way overshadowed the voice acting. I couldn't hear what the characters were saying more than half the time. Even after getting partway through the demo (where it would actually let you into the options screen), and lowering the volume of the music and SFX, I was still unable to hear the dialog.
Combat felt like a joke. There was no sense of danger. The most basic attacks send enemies hurling through the air like they're sticks. The battle with the Ogre was laughable. It was nowhere near on par with the first Ogre in the original game. I had to go through that battle in DA:O a few times before getting it right, and even then I barely survived. In the DA2 Demo, the Ogre posed no threat at all.
Removing the need to pause and plan seems to go hand in hand with drastically reducing the difficulty. There's no reason now to make tactical decisions. It plays more like Diablo or Champions of Norrath.
I thought the art was poor. Close ups on people's faces had low textures, although that's probably due to the fact that anything above medium quality graphics were locked out. One of the characters I tried was the female mage. In the second part of the demo, you're wearing a light colored robe and you can see separation between the neck and the robe. It's completely transparent! It's especially noticeable in the close up shots during cutscenes.
Additionally, there was no option to save at all throughout the demo. I turned it on before bed after a long day of work and wanted to just try a bit of it. Well, after alt+tabbing to answer some instant messages, the game crashed and lost my progress. So I started over, thinking I'd just save the game to prevent that from happening again, only to find that you CANNOT SAVE anywhere.
I realize the demo is short, but I found myself quickly running through it only to be rid of the thing, primarily because I didn't relish the thought of starting it over AGAIN.
I already pre-purchased the game back in October, having enjoyed the original so much. While I'm interested to see more of how they've streamlined the menus, I can't help but feel the gameplay has been reduced in order to appeal to a larger audience. I find this odd, since the first game was such a hit, that the simplification of the sequel was taken so far.
Story is important, and I don't doubt this game has it in spades, but the gameplay is really REALLY weak. If I wanted to watch a CG movie I'd pop in Advent Children or something.

The combat was more fun than DA:O. Biggest improvement was the warrior cause they always seemed to move in slow mo in DA:O. The flashy moves are good old fashioned, over the top fun. I mean there's a reason we like the old Bruce Lee movies right?
The darkspawn look very cool, more like something cursed by heaven than lizard people.
Glad we get a fully voiced character this time. Going back and playing DA:O now the conversations are a bit jarring playing as a mute. Also like the radial wheel for the conversation, less reading to pull you out of the moment.
Also like that you get the unconcisous choice of Carver or Bethany dying right at the start. Not sure that I can play as a mage though now cause I like Bethany too much already.
I am however a little disturbed by the breast size of the female characters (yes I know this game is made by guys). But I have learned something new - the push up bra was invented in ye olde Fereldan.
Can't wait for the full game

Story
I like the new story telling approach. It's different, but feels fresh
and interesting. Especially since you have no idea if Varric is telling
the truth. I have no strong feelings either way about the new dialogue
system. Either works.
Combat
The DA:O combat was bland to me. I'm glad improvements were made for it
to be faster, more responsive, and generally badass. The brutality of it
is satisfying if you're into the action playstyle, and the tactical
elements are just like you're used to for original game. I realize the
Normal difficulty (demo) is more for the action playstyle.
- PS3: The controls feel right for the action playstyle, but seem a bit more
difficult (in navigating the UI) if you wan't to play the game
tactically. Using the analog stick to move is a definite plus over the
PC version, though; as it's easier to move
while using skills at the same time. My only gripe is that you have to
use R2 to access the other abilities, but I understand that's the only
way to get more hotkeys for skills mapped to the controller. - PC: Easier to target enemies. Faster navigation of UI. The ability to hover over the abilities on your hotbar for tooltip description is a bonus over PS3 - as well as having all abilities on one bar.
Visuals
I love the new art style. Origins models/textures felt a little too plain for a fantasy game, along with stiff animations. DA2 improved on all of these aspects. Flemeth and Isabella look stunning compared to before. And it feels as if it's a painting come to life (which is a good attention grabber).
There also seems to be a lot more color and attention to detail than Origins. The PC visuals, in particular, are eye-catching with the DX11 renderer; even without full DX11 support. Ex- The ripples in the air from the heat of the fire around Hawke's family, the shadows of the fast moving clouds over the landscape, as well as improved shading/lighting in general.
PC Technical Problems
On the PC, the game (and computer) would sometimes freeze and leave behind visual artifacts like the picture itself was shredded apart. This happened once when the Seeker interrupted Varric's story, and another time when the character creator popped on screen. I'm hoping this won't be an issue for me in the retail version, as I don't have the issue with Mass Effect 2 or Origins. (Coincidentally, this problem occurred in WoW sometimes whenever large numbers of characters were loading on screen).
Final Say
Overall, my first impressions of the demo were favorable. I think Dragon Age 2 will be 10x more enjoyable for me than Origins, largely due to the many improvements I've seen in the demo.

Combat was boring because of the lack of variety of encounters and opponents, the lack of true differences between classes and the lack of strategic approaches to battles....obie191970 wrote...

Obviously, you haven't the faintest clue on how Bioware is run.
Obviously I don't work for Bioware. I am just look at quality of their products as a customer. Look at the low scores all the DLCs got at review sites. Not even awakening got close to score of original game.
You want to know why the big changes happen from ME1 to ME2 and DA:O to DA2? It's because Bioware actually compiles what is written for feedback on these boards and adjusts accordingly.
ME1 Complaints: This Inventory sucks! Why do I need 47 Medical Exoskelton X's? What the hell - Elevator rides? Bioware, whats up with the Mako and empty planets?
ME2 Complaints: Where's my inventory? The end mission screen is terrible - I preferred the elevator rides!!! Where's the exploration?!!!
DA:O Complaints: Combat is boring! Combat is unresponsive! I feel like I'm wallking in mud!!!!
DA2 (Demo)Complaints: It's God of War! NO TATICZ! Combat is too fast!!!
People around here want to know who to blame - Go look in the mirror.
The Bioware solution? Make them faster, manga style, and whti less tactic to be involved (skill cooldown very fast, not true difference between attacks, AOE spamming, no friendly fire)...
That's the difference between the DAO complains and the Bioware solution, period.

they gave us the OPTION to turn off auto-attack.. ok, but as been stated its still there if you want it. isnt more choice a good thing?
the attack swings are faster.. ok.. besides maybe 2-handers looking a bit out of whack (they shouldnt be able to swing as fast as they do), how have the combat MECHANICS really changed?
click target? check. character swings? check. switch characters? check. seems pretty similar to DAO to me.

Didnt like the combat, had too much of an arcade, hack'n'slash, feel to it.
They just seem to have changed so much of the things I enjoyed about the first one. I enjoyed Mass Effect 2 more than the first one because it fixed and improved things that were wrong with the first one. DA2 feels like they've changed things that were never broken in the first place.
I really wanted to enjoy this game, my reservations about the direction they've went with are more pronounced now that I've seen it. I'll still buy it though, the demo could've been 'Hello Kitty Farmville', as long as the Bioware sticker is on the box I'll stand in line for it.
