I have played the demo twice.  The first time, playing as a rogue, I found the combat to be hugely annoying with the masses of darkspawn and button-mashing, and I didn't really get into the story (such as it was in the demo).  I never got past the ogre because my party kept getting killed over and over and OVER again.  I was very disappointed overall.   Though I really liked the way the rogue could move, I did NOT enjoy getting killed repeatedly and being frustrated.

However, I decided to give it another chance tonight and play as a warrior.  This one simple change made a big difference.  I stlll think the combat is annoying.  I don't like button mashing and the hordes of enemies feel like something for the young'uns who equate the awesomeness of a game to the sheer number of bad guys they can kill at any given time. However, I found the story to be much more interesting this time around, my Ladyhawke didn't die every three seconds (only twice in the ogre round, which I guess is acceptable), and I actually was able to finish the demo in pretty short order.

In the previous incarnation of Dragon Age I played each of the three types.  I played as rogue twice because I like the dual-weapon moves, I wanted to be able to access locked chests at the beginnning of the game, and I didn't want to "waste" a slot with a rogue later on.  However, I always was a "combat" rogue because I like to wade in with blades slashing.  I think the Dragon Age 2 demo "demo-nstrated"  Posted Image that each class needs to be played in a more "pure" fashion, which is why I kept dying as a rogue in the demo, because I was not "roguish" enough!    I was able to get into the story more the second time as a fighter simply because all the interesting parts of that story happened once the ogre was dead.

I like the talent web.  I think it will be easier to stay away from the talents that you will never use and specialize your character more easily.

The size of the type is pretty small on my 32" SDTV, but I don't hold it against Bioware - I am just behind the times technologically.

Overall, I'm glad I gave it a second chance and I think that if you play as the type of character you REALLY are, all will be well.  You may need to think a little bit about your real playing style, though.

I liked the overall demo, combat felt like origins only faster, and the abilities look really coolPosted Image only downsides I can think of is that it felt too easy and the darkspawn still look weird.

I Just finished the demo on Xbox 360 and wow Combat is awesome...Its has all the tactics of DA:O but now Its actually fun on console. The only problem I have is why is the font in the game so small? My eyes strained to see what was going on...Guess its time to upgrade to a decent LCD?.

1-- Graphic Art: Not as realistic as DA:O, but still realistic enough with a bit of an artistic deviation (I think one of the devs said in an interview that they wanted a samurai-ish look/feel). It's kind of cool, and will take some getting used to. Although, the darkspawn looked grittier/more sinister in DA:O, now they look a bit clownish- just a bit. And the women's chests are a little too distracting.

I agree with you, the realism and gritty feel of Origins is gone. Unsure why that developer, whomever he/she was that commented on a "samurai" look/feel. Quite silly of that dev to say that, clearly it's more graphic novel based inspired artwork. If they were going for Edo period shogunate samurai they failed. The darkspawn look like Peter Jackson's take on goblins from The Lord of the Rings. My theory is the darkspawn will play a very small unimportant role in DA:II so why not just change them? Though I disagree with you, on the distracting knockers. They are quite classy. :-P

Played it on the PC. I didn't really like the melee combat, but it was much more fun using magic this time around. Graphics have improved, though I did not like the scenery at all. Dialogue was... okay I guess. Didn't like the user interface. Would have liked more control over the camera.

Overall I'm glad I didn't preorder it. I think this will be the first bioware game I'll give a miss.

I wonder just how much of this feedback will be put to use by the time the game is released.
None, some of it, or most of it? Would be nice to see an answer after the game releases.

None of it. It can't be. If anything, this is for the future.

If we're really lucky, some of the problems that people have been raising will be addressed by the first patch, which they're probably now well on the way to making.

Most of the negative opinions seem to be coming from people who really like the first one and the Bioware brand in general. Therefore they probably have been very dissapointed by Bioware who decided to take what was good about the first one out instead of fixing the issues that people had. Sequels should be about refinement, not selling the game to a different base halfway through a series. Seriously, the people who like the demo seem to be far more zealous than those who dislike it,

QFT.

+1, there is a definite feeling of the "faithfull" here, but then extremism is on both sides.

Another QFT / +1

The demo has some issues with my video card (an NVIDIA GTX580) where parts of the ground mesh seem to randomly disappear when I look from certain angles. I tried the DX11 settings, which could be the problem.

Regarding the game itself, it looks like a JRPG, the animations are way over the top, and the script / interpretation pales in comparison to Origins'. Usually I am not too bothered by animations, but this is something that I can't stomach along with the cartoony graphics. While I can understand the shift, the niche that you are attempting to target is not my own, and thus I won't buy this game.

A lot of other people have made much more eloquent points than what I'm about to say, but with limited time (I'm between feedings with two-month-old twins), here's my take.

The game FEELS significantly different. And not for the better. For me, it played much more like a hack-n-slash God of War-type game than I wanted. Even though the combat for DA:O didn't work for a lot of folks, I think it did a much better job of immersing the player into the game than what I saw in my playthrough of DA II.

I have no opinions on the graphics, voice acting, pixel-rendering... etc etc etc because I just couldn't get beyond how much like a completely different game the DA II demo played. I'm not a huge gamer, but DA:O was a completely new experience for me and I couldn't get enough. I want more of that, not Darksiders.

I also think much of the medieval element is lost with the new menus and level-up trees. That may be silly, but it contributed to my experience.

I realize this rant may not make a lot of sense and it's hard to put into words, but I played (and am still playing) DA:O and don't think I'll have the same level of re-play for DA II. Again it just FEELS different. I hope this feedback just confirms some of the other, more well-spoken community members' comments.

Well I never post in forums but the time has come to tell you what the old jackal thinks of Dragon age 2. I been quiet to long and have spend to much time in Dragon Age not to share with you some wisdom.
DAO: This game was the best rpg I have played. Took me in and never let me go. After I beat the game I just had to go back and play it FOREVER. I still find things even today that make me very happy. So this is the basic format for building DAO2. Foundation if you will for a building, got to have a strong one and it does.
DAO2:Now I had some problems with DAO2 before I played the demo that is. When you make a game, and put a 2 on it you are to put more in it, not take things out based on some kinda data I was or others didn't know anything about. Granted I play a fighter when I first start out in a game but I always start something else when I get bored of playing one. I can tell you this always happens at least with me it does. So I go back and start like and Elf archer or Elf, dwarf ect... But I like to have options. DAO2 I was hoping to see more classes, and more races that we could play with more story behind them, not take them away and leave me being human 24/7. Also DAO2 I not a Warden? What about Andrasta? The Black City? The Maker? When we found the ashes of Andrasta I though we where so close..I was just about to call up gamestop and Cancel my pre-order!!!!. But then I heard about the demo, and stopped in my tracks. I will give it a chance, I thought. I am glad I did.
DAO2 When I first heard the music, it had me. I have to admit, I am in love with Leliana from DAO. But moving on the demo was my mind changer. Here is why:
1.The new fighting is way over the top, just the way I like it!
2.The new spells are the best! The graphics for them are the some of the best I
have seen. Love them.
3.The Emote Wheel, alot easier then the old DAO. As in mass effect 2, I now
know what I am saying and the feeling behind it. So this gives me the edge if I
want to stick it to someone or flirt with them.
4.Even though we do not have more classes/races, this is a big deal for me, I like
what they did with the ones they let us play with. Content wise, I hope its more
to make up for the lack of classes/races. Love the chars that was in the demo.
Very sexy, and alot of detail, Thank you Bioware.
5. Overall the demo gave us a great taste of what is to come. I own all of Bioware
games. They have never disappointed me and I am proud to say, they did
not disappoint me this time either. So I am not going to cancel my order
because from what this old jackal has seen its going to be a great ride into
Kirkwall and beyond, Thank you again Bioware I hope you get you get Game
Of the Year 2011!

Here is an idiotic question on my part. How do I equip a bow instead of dual wielding for my rogue? I played through with the dual wield but want to give it a shot with a bow. I can see the bow in my inventory but can't seem to find a weapon swap key.

I liked the demo's gameplay and graphics, and the fact that it's an earlier build make me optimistic about the retail game.

Something I wonder is what is considered the "good guy" decision when it comes to Wesley? Kill him yourself or leave it to Aveline to decide.

You have to get it from a body at the start, it will give you a dialoigue option to choose archery, they did it this way because the inventory is locked for the demo.

I played through each permutation of class capabilities (Mage, SnS Warrior, 2H Warrior, DW Rogue, Archer Rogue) and I have to say I really enjoyed it. There were only a couple of bummers. One was that health potions and Heal got outrageously long cooldowns. Sure, it makes the game "harder" but for more reckless folks like me [IN IT TO WIN IT], it forces me to kite a lot more at low health, which severely interrupts combat flow (which is very well-paced and fluid). The other is that Scattershot is gone. If there was one ability I wanted to come back from Origins bar none, it would have been Scattershot. Then again, that may be the problem as it was absurdly powerful.

Other than that, the minor issues were just that the scenery was a touch bland (but obviously there was just the post-Lothering bit), but I'm going to chalk that up to the setting and the demo length which didn't allow for much more presentation outside of that and some dark portions of Kirkwall. Can't think of much else that I didn't like. I pre-ordered it within a day of playing the demo.

I'm playing the 360 demo.

When first playing it, i hated it. But that's nothing new considering i didn't like the first one when i first played it. I found the origin i chose to be boring (Dalish Elf Origin). But when i got to ostagar, it was pretty damn fun.

When first playing this demo, i felt it was bad. And i don't mind smashing the A button. I forgot that we got a chance to do that and i began to drift off in thoughts, considering i thought it was auto. So that was pretty cool. I don't mind it.
I'm playing it over and over again, and i love it now. But when i first played it, what rly threw me off was the carver died when i played as a rouge (and a warrior). That rly took me off guard.
And then when you enter kirkwall, there was a sense of being rushed into it, but seeing the walk through chat thing with one of the creators i knew the real game wasn't going to be like that.
But it was distracting to see Carver there, when i knew he specifically died!
But i know that its just for the demo and i'm not expecting this in the full game.

And as many ppl probably stated before me, I hated those small hiccups in btw the combat and the cut scenes, when they were being swarmed, very annoying.
Also when you talk to Flemeth, you pick one of the positive/good responses, Flemeth responds but towards the end of her reply she cuts herself off sharply.

In any case, it was a great experience and i rly can't wait for the game to come out, great work Bioware!

Edit: And on trivial thing i noticed was the difference in Cassandra's concern in wondering where and the story being told. Depending on the gender, her facial expression changes on this one partical part. If you pick the male hawke, she has an expression of deep concern (i forget at what point) and if it is female hawke, the cocern is a bit tamed and more about her specific goal. Yet the dialogue is still the same.
Just something i admired

I saw a brief blurb that went on and off screen so fast I couldn't tell what it said.  I'll give it another go, perhaps I touched a key by accident.  Thanks for your help.

The Demo was great, I myself am a major Warrior fan in almost nearly game I play. After playing through the demo once, I tried the Rogue class and was amazed that I was having just as much fun if not more. I have to say, if there's anyone not yet excited for this game...after trying the new combat system I suspect they'll be standing right next to me in line opening day.

****I have a question though for any who may have heard. Can the Warrior class still duel-wield weapons??? Is it the 'Vanguard' specialization? It was locked in the demo.

No. Dual wield is Rogue only, as far as I've seen.

It's probably the biggest beef I have about the upcoming game, no cross classes, to me RPG is about making your own distinct class, I really enjoyed combining talents.

To put it in perspective: originally bought DA:O because I already do a yearly BG:II run and found a positive connection between the two.   All in all I've 253 hours played on Dragon Age according to steam (and maybe another 80 while offline); played every single origin; R.P.'d the hell out of my apostate arcane warrior / battle mage elf... ect...

The most accurate impression I could give back to bioware would be a request for their mailing address so I could overnight them a pile of dog ****. Seriously, what the hell was that?

*Completely removed ability to RP with loss of both race and greater dialogue choice. Often times I was left wondering what the hell my character would say; I was not once satisfied with their words.
*Action felt comical how fast it was.
*Inability to move around the battlefield (I've heard this is being changed but it was still lacking in the demo so belongs in this thread).
*Zero emotional depth due in large part because of inability to either identify with the character or even make them my own (due in large part because of the impredictability of the wheel)
*The darkspawn just look silly now.
*Voice acting was incredibly a-symetrical and bland.  Futhermore,  it only served to remove me from my charecter instead of connecting me with them.
*The near constant cinimatics  functioned terribly.   I didn't feel like I was  interacting with my party but instead watching another stupid and annoying cutscene.

I was on the fence about this new direction before and I'm completely turned off now. This is clearly an action rpg built for consoles. It simply feels like a completely different game set in the same universe and not a sequel.

About the only positive I can see from this game is that it will be more playable as a console player; as a PC gamer though, and a huge fan of the previous game, I however feel 100% alienated from the current incarnation of DAII.
