I have been on Bioware games since the beginning, been a PC player for as long as I remember and point-and-click Diablo wannabe games really bore me.

But, this Demo really blew up my mind! The combat is fast paced as lightning, and yet you can still use all the good old tactics with the space-bar. Fantastic! Plus it's very very gory, and I just love that!

The graphics are a huge improvement over DAO, and not all options of the final product were available! (I played the demo at max resolutions with all options on, including dx 11).

Now, the classes:

1) Mage:

++ fast, blows everything away, it's really fun to play, and has loads of fun abilities.

-- Some abilities recycles from DAO. I just wish they had made new ones instead of the Glyphs. Also, I would have preferred if there were more spells in each tree (so to have really epic spells).

2) Rogue:

++ Many new cool abilities, ultra fast (seems like you are playing with a ninja!) and in general seems very fun to play (has bombs too!)

-- None I can think of

3) Warrior:

-- Many recycled abilities from DAO, not so fast paced, kills enemies slowly. Overall, from my point of view, it was the least enjoyable of the 3 classes. I think instead of warrior you should have been able to play something like an Ogre-like creature, smashing creature to the ground, throwing them in the air, etc...much more fun!

Of course in the demo there were many things now available (inventory, crafting, and who knows what else), but I really hope they will eventually add more races instead of the over-used Elves/Dwarves, as well as making ability trees with many more upgrades/abilities to make the game really epic.

All in all, a huge improvement over DAO and has the feel of an action game with the good old nice narrative, voice overs, great story, alignment based dialogue choices, etc.

Great Job Bioware!!

Have played the demo (PC) 4 times (unable to log on to DA servers the first time). Haydens Razor appears in the profile> your registered game promotions submenu when the demo is completed. Graphics seem a bit better than DA:O, though your mileage may vary. (Radeon HD 5850 1GB here, still not able to run everything at the highest setting 1680x1050). character classes seem to be more varied than DA:O , though the lack of player race will annoy some. Good voice acting, combat felt more fluid, though some will be vexed over the closing distance animations. It seems you will lose someone from the initial party based on your class, understandable (some kind of balancing decision by the development team?) though perhaps a bit annoying depending on the class of NPC's Hawk may recruit (DA:O had many fighter type characters, but only 2 mages if you weren't a mage). A little jarring is the time difference between the initial segment and the later segment. I think the full game will give some more choice about who to have in the party and who to recruit for the party, after all this was only a demo, no need to reveal all the NPC's and such. This game seems very promising. Hope the full game can deliver on the things the demo did (and didn't/couldn't) show.

@r2dr - When the "raging fans" are in the minority of folks complaining, it doesnt mean squat really. Seriously, as ive stated countless times before and will state one more time: You and every "hardcore" fan of Origins could go out and boycott DA2 and it would still be a proverbial drop in the bucket in terms of affecting BWs sales numbers. There just isnt enough of you hating on it to make a significant difference.  You're a dying breed.  it's time to come to terms with that.

There's a difference between fanboyism and watching an existing formula that works get 'improved' to make it seem like every other game out there so it can get 10,000 more sales. I'm going off on a limb here, but i'd wager that at this rate, DA2 is going to hit the shops fullpriced, and the stuff that actually make the game good will be released through DLC later on. Putting out a movie where Hawke has an epic fight against a qunari, then making the PC human-only feels like a foreshadowing to me...

After my second playthrough (a mage) i remembered reading the following quote:

medusa_hair wrote...

I don't like button mashing and the
hordes of enemies feel like something for the young'uns who equate the
awesomeness of a game to the sheer number of bad guys they can kill at
any given time.

This, to me, really emphasizes the arcade feel that DA2 has got going. In the original, darkspawn were a force to be reckoned with, a true army of corrupted beings jumping at your throat... In the demo, i've seen three fighting refugees (the Champion, his/her half-trained apostate sister and their little brother who fought at Ostagar) and a glorified housewife with some adventuring experience (Aveline, sorry fanboys) slaughtering them by the dozens and slicing them in half like they all had brittle bone disease or something.

Watching the path of destruction behind me, i couldn't help but wonder if i actually needed Flemeth's help to get out of the area, aside from sheer convenience for not having to walk the distance of course. DA2 is a role playing game, fine. So why was i running away from Lotharing again?

Escape teh pursuing darkspawn army:

@amyante - My point still stands though...You have to either accept change, or get run over by it. CRPGers are becoming a dying breed it seems. Im not for it, Im not against it. I merely accept it as an inevitable eventuality.

Well, I can't say much about the PC demo considering it crashes constantly.

My big grip on DA2 is where the hell did auto attack and target lock go? What the hell is this mouse spam crap. If your target moves, you spend a lot of time running in circles due to mouse clicking on the ground. Who would come up with a mouse click to attack. No one uses this is games. It click on target and keyboard/pad spam. Get with the program.

I've seen a few comments like this and am a bit confused.  My PC demo auto attacked, heck, one of the Rogue skills "requires" auto attack to build it up. I never had to click the mouse to attack, just to select the target.  I noticed some console people saying they have no auto attack, or the option to turn it off so they have to button mash, but I don't play the console version, so wouldn't know.

Because the PCers will have the origins style "click then auto attack" where as the console gamers will have the option to either "button mash" or go with the PC style "click to start auto attack" in the full game.

Wow this thread is really full of trolls or people who complain about a portion of the game before the whole thing is out. One person complained about the thickness of the legs of a char. Really ?

i played and Finished dragon age 5 plus times and did awakenings aswell which by and far was more over the top then this demo was.

This game demo was interesting since it gave a solid taste of the new combat system. Story wise they had to butcher it to get it to fit in the demo. i understand hence why most companies hate making demos cause its not a true representation of the game in its entirety. Its also like ringing the dinner bell for every troll in the world. Some of you people just want a reason to sit there and gripe about things that are artistic style. If you dont like the style, dont like it but don;t assume in this jam packed demo we have seen all the skins/ models of the darkspawn or whatever meaningless whine is going through your head.

Ok about the combat i knew people were going to be very angry cause the slow lumbering combat is gone. Seriously auto attack is still there so why the crying? "Omg i can actually position myself and do it on my own, this isnt a rpg!" see what i did there, thats how you sound. my opinion is what i have seen i like its different but i was warned before i downloaded this isnt cut and paste from previous game. putting people out of thier comfort zones is really daunting.

Storywise its a demo leaving it be till i see the finished product. When your mom blames you i really wanted to say you were right next to him. but the two deaths displayed still had some weight but i dont actually know if there wasnt more to it. From whats presented it could have been embelished upon more.

Played it through 6 times split between my xbox pc and ps3 and i admit ps3 looks better of the consoles the models pop more but the ps3 has better hardware. Pc since i was used to it from playing my other systems i cant accurately say for people not used to the demo already. The blight which was that black mark on the map when you played DA:O was said to have a effect on the land so lothering looking like a festering hole gets a pass. Flemeth awesome, transformation sequence hot. Kirkwall someone said it was lacking color the mission is at nigh. Elaborating on why that makes sense would be more like talking down to you.

My only real complaint is male hawks voice but you cant change it now so enjoy my 60 bucks

Oh i know, wouldn't be the first time i've seen this happen either. Doesn't mean i have to be happy about seeing RPGs (which imo are all about immersion) and games in general get dumbed down for the masses. Even if out of 7 dialogue options 5 lead to the exact same response, the fact remains that you get to pick from 7 different things to say, and have more of a feeling of control on your character's personality (note: feeling, as in the impression you have, not whether you actually have it). It is something that is more and more often undervalued compared to visual effects (DA2 ninja combat animations), pretty explosions and fast paced action to keep people distracted from the faults. Gaming these days is more 'jack in for a quickmatch' rather than start up a Campaign Mode, regrettably.

I am an oldschool gamer, dating from back in the days of the MSX and Commodore 64. One day, gfx (and CPU speeds) will reach a point where improvements will simply no longer be visually noticeable (can you tell the difference between 2048×1536 and 4096×3072?)... And when that happens, gaming will return to its roots, back when gameplay and plot were what were important to get people to buy a game.

I am patient, and i will wait for that day, picking up the occasional title out of the brainless masses that agrees with me. ;)

Wasn't that fond of the combat tbh, especially the rogue, all the flipping around looked completely silly, couldn't even finish my rogue demo playthrough because of that, to me DA2 combat tries to mesh both action and RPG combat and ends up being an average mesh of the two, neither achieving the fluidity and responsiveness of a good action game nor the depth of a good RPG, it's far from terrible though, I just wish it was better.

  • The Witcher is a clickfest like no other. All about the clicking to attack. *click* *click* *click* *click* *click* (full attack sequence completed!) repeat. Still a fun game though.
  • Fallout 3 - Then again, it can be played as a shooter (which reminds me that I should try it some day, maybe)
  • The Elder Scrolls Series: Let's face it, combat so far has been run around like crazy and click as fast as you can to swing your weapon. Fun series, but combat is a click fest like no other. Not to mention all those hours spent jumping around just to increase acrobatics, still a fun series though. But certainly not for the likes of those who hate clicking.
So I'd say clicking to perform an attack is hardly new, but that said auto-attacks are still there in DA2 - at least on the PC.

Playing on PC. I was disappointed to get directX and vsync CTD's straight away, but after sorting these I felt the following.

The Good
- The tapestry narration and loading screens. Lovely.
- The mini-map.  I always switched the old one off becasue it got in the way.
- Flemeth's look
- Improved graphics. I'm looking forward to even more improvement with dx11.
- Kirkwall's look
- The skill tree, much more organic than the old sequence.
- Cassandra. The most human character in the demo. The way her eyebrows moved to show her real concern and worry at the state of events was fantastic.

The not so good
- Hawke's voice and the 'mockney' voices done by Hayder
- The face animations for Hawke and family when talking.
- The lack of mouse-over descriptions in the tactics menu
- In the tactics menu only a small area on each box was clickable
- the lack of an overhead view, annoying but not the outright game-stopper I feared

The bad
- The dialogue wheel
- Delay between selecting something on the wheel and any speech
- lots of pausing for loading, I don't remember any for DA:O in the middle of cutscenes.
- Rogue 'flippy' animation. Really silly.  This may stop me putting Isabella in my team and I really wanted to see what Sheryl had written for her. It may also stop me having a rogue run through at all.
- Horribly linear level design for the blighted land. I really hope the designers have got away from this. It blights too many of their games.

Theres no such thing as "over the top" when the word "fantasy" (by webster's dictionary's meaning) comes into the genre lable.

You seem to have taken it upon yourself to argue against every bit of feedback in the feedback thread, if it's not something you agree with. How many posts have you made here now telling people what is wrong with their opinions?

Of course something can be over the top in a fantasy setting. You have fantasy settings like Lord of the Rings, you have fantasy settings like Terry Pratchett's Discworld and everything in between. You have several times stated that to you all this is one category labelled "fantasy" and anything is acceptable therefore. But many of us are able to differentiate between different sub-categories of fantasy and what might make sense in Discworld would be incongruous in Middle Earth, for example. DA:O had a baseline of realism: swords were mostly in proportion to real world analogues, running speeds mostly analoguous to real world times and distances. It was realistic fantasy. What we see in DA:II is markedly more toward the Japanese Animé conventions of swords unfeasibly huge and leaps through the air of staggering distance. On my second play through the demo, I noticed a warrior shooting past me like a jet plane leaving blur-lines in the air. From the point of view of someone wanting realistic fantasy, this is indeed over the top. It's an apt way of describing what is not to one's taste.

You're missing my point.  Its obvious by the direction the franchise is going that BW's defintion of "fantasy" is more in line with the text book meaning than those who are complaining about it.  Remember, this isnt DAO2...its DA2.

Speaking of comprehension. The devs have said several times in this thread that it is not for posting your disagreement with every single post that doesn't think as you do.
