The worst part is that the vast majority of those complaining about DA:2 are going to buy it anyway...

It isn't that cut and dry.

I play on the 360..
I didn't like the demo for a few reasons.
-The animations, especially rogue, are over the top and unnecessary.  Some of the cut scenes just didn't keep my attention.
-The lack of conversations options makes the dialogue boring to me. It's not so much the good or evil thing as it is having a lot of options to carry out a conversation with. I like to play a good RPG a few times through and I don't see the benefit of playing DA2 more than once...
-I like DA:O because I could play ALL characters during a fight. In the DA2 demo I felt I couldn't really switch between characters that much because I had to focus on constantly attacking. I think they give you more enemies that are weaker and I preferred the DA:O way. I may have to use the tactics a lot more with this game and that is a turn off to me.

Overall the demo felt odd to me and I just didn't care for it much. I am currently playing through DA:O for my third time and it just feels better to me.

Now to your comment, I had Dragon Age 2 pre-ordered and after my second play through of the demo I canceled the pre-order. Yes I may play DA2 at some point but I will buy it used and at a big discount. I have only bought one other game used in my lifetime and at least 200 new. I generally prefer to buy new and directly support the developers. From what I have seen so far I just can't see myself supporting what Bioware/EA has done with Dragon Age!

Well, the only thing I dont want to support them for is the release-date DLC for seven USD and I guess it will cost seven Euro here in Europe.
Dont get me wrong, Im still gonna buy DA2, but sure enough not the DLC, until theyll make some bundle; there will be most certainly a ton of DLC to bundle ; )

The only thing I'm wondering consistency wise is if 1.) the mage/warrior outfit from the trailer and beginning of the game will pop up later. 2.) how the dlc from origins will affect da2 3.) Did anybody have problems with the demo cutscenes? There was a pause then it took time to load...go figure

Here's one more thing... there really needed to be a way of locking onto your target. Unless I missed that. It was kind of hard to focus on one person in the sea of hurlocks.

On 360, push in the Left Thumbstick. Idk about the PC, but I imagine it's the same button as it was in DA:O.

The left thumbstick didn't lock targets on the PS3. Wish it had...I found myself mashing it like crazy to no avail.

Edit: This did work on PS3 DA:O however.

One thing I'd like to understand better: this thread was set up by Bioware to discuss the demo, but of course the game has gone gold, disks are ready to be sold, and nothing will (or can) change in the game mechanics between now and this weekend when we get the game in our hands. The fact that I didn't care for the combat mechanics matters not a whit towards this release, nor whether or not I liked the new art (which I actually did, Hurlocks notwithstanding).

So, is the intent to look for non-crash things that might be fixed in a patch -- i.e., adding a "tactical combat" option, or fixing the skins for kooky-looking baddies? Or is it just to let people both rave and vent and get it out of their system? Precious few people have stated that they've actually cancelled their purchase (I sure haven't, and I only believe half of the people who declared that they did actually did Posted Image), which is the only real immediate outcome that could be expected from the demo beyond maybe winning a few more customers. Of course, there's always the need to find recall-class bugs that need an immediate patch -- but as a developer I'd skim for that info on the support forum, not this general talkback forum, so then...

Doubt I'd get an official answer, of course, but just curious.

ok, i downloaded the demo a few days ago and was so excited to playthrough it. i really liked the fighting style and how quick the character move but the cool down time on potions and spells especially healing is driving me crazy!! i cant get past the ogre when you have aveline in your party. ive gotten him down to almost nothing but since i have to wait like 5 minutes for the cool down i die. ive played through as a rouge and as a warrior (5 tries at least) and i cant get it. If this part of the game is going to be thins hard in da2 im really gonna go nuts!! HELP!!!!!!

1. did you pause?
2. were your mages standing in melee range?
3. did you allocate skills and abilities properly?

Cheers.  I'll give it another try next time I play the demo.  For some reason it wasn't working, but maybe I just wasn't paying attention...

Whoops... I hope that didn't sound rude.  I meant, I have no idea, since the game went gold long ago... and they use computers to track people's save game data, so it's not like they read this stuff (aside from maybe to get a few laughs).  Well anyway, it gives people on the forum a place to blow off steam, so I guess that's one purpose.

There seems to be a problem with the "hold position" v. "move freely" modes. Or maybe there was a setting I didn't see? In DA:O the "hold position" meant "don't do anything unless I specifically tell you", which does not seem to be the case in DA2. In DA:O I almost never allowed my minions to roam freely or think for themselves, because they would use their Talents unintelligently. I would always toggle on the "hold position" mode and either issue individual commands or select the entire party to attack an individual baddie. Sometimes I would toggle to "move freely" in times of peace, usually to allow them to follow me from point A to point B, because if I left them at point A, the system seemed to bog down as I put more and more distance between myself and them. (And oh man, if I would leave them up at the top of Redcliffe while I jogged down to the village, I'd get the 30K-ft view of me running around in the village =) But in the demo it seemed that when I toggled on "hold position" mode, selected the entire party, and targeted and enemy, only the ranged minion would pick up the command. What gives? This is on the PC, btw.

No worries, I took it the way you intended.  In fact, you summarized the situation in a far less verbose fashion than I did!

I just don't understand the unnecessary changes, such as the UI. I just hope its worth it.

Is the PC build an older build than the xbox one? I've played both now and the PC one seems much glitchier - Avaline just stood there refusing to do anything in half the fights and i had to control her to get her to do anything - I checked her tactics they were all fine. Carver did the same thing half the time. Also things seemed to take a lot longer to kill on the PC version - I thought the difficulties were meant to be the same on xbox and PC this time - maybe it was just me though as I'm used to playing it on xbox and it felt a bit clunkier to control on my PC, so maybe it just took longer due to my ineptitude ;)

It also doesn't make a whole lot of sense to have a target automatically acquired for the player charcter if you're in control of that character.  How would they accomplish this in a smart way anway?  Not everyone would always pick the highest or lowest health targets.

How about:
If something hits the controlled character, and the controlled character is in range and doesn't have another target, start auto-attcking the guy that just hit you. If you want a different target, you can acquire them manually and the player character wouldn't have spent the intervening time span twiddling their thumbs.

Exactly right Parahexavoctal! That's exactly what I expect should happen. But it doesn't in the demo. That's how combat worked in DA:O (at least that's how I remember it and I recently played through it again).

Graunt, the point is not that the auto-attack is necessarily the smartest possible option for the character, it's just vastly better than standing there doing nothing while taking damage because the idiot at the keyboard is mesmerized by all the flashy animations. Better to attack /something/ than to do nothing, right. And if the idiot at the keyboard (me) gets his stuff together and decides to change the attack focus then there's always the ability to change the attack manually.

For me, I dislike playing on hard etc. I like to scan the timer countdowns on the abilities while the hack and slash is being conducted. This new behavior really sucks for my playstyle. And it's going to be even more of a problem in DA2 because the number of enemies in each encounter seems to be higher than in DA:O.

I'm really liking the new combat system more and more with each playthrough.  More fluid and intense.

I just wish the Darkspawn didn't look like undead with a leather fetish.  I  guess Zevran would approve....

She does that if she is set to "tank" (which is her default setting). If you set her to "aggressive" she is agressive and a much better tank.

You know these are some pretty good points. I do find myself wandering about the purpose of this demo. Being provided so close to release date it hardly gives any option to change things in response to feedback. And as to providing more initial sales I think it's likly going to do just the opposite. I for one had an intention to buy the game but now having played the demo am no longer going to. At best I shall wait to see more reviews and feedback before I bother spending any cash on it.

The way I see it either the demo is poorly made and does no justice to the final product( in which case why release it at all) or it is an accutrate representation which ofcourse is even worse as it would mean the game as a whole is substandard.

I am with Alexus on this. I don't see what Bioware had to gain by releasing this demo so close to official release. For several months, Dragon Age 2 was my "must buy" purchase for this spring. But now that I've played the demo and experienced strong dissatisfaction with the new arcade-style combat, I feel like I've taken a step back and am now, at best about 50/50 on whether to get the game. I will wait until after release to see what the community's feedback is. If some adjustment hasn't been made to combat, I will probably go in a different direction.

Which is a real shame, because Origins was one of the best games I had played in years and I absolutely LOVE the world in which it takes place.

Well, hmm. I played it a second time, this time as a rogue instead of a warrior, and darned if I didn't like the combat better -- maybe it's growing on me. It's still a little silly, but not nearly as heinous as I first thought.

Elementary, my dear Watson:

The changes to gameplay are meant to attract and appeal to the "more action!" gamer.  This demo is to show how drastically different this new game is from DA:O, and in so doing accumulate sales from gamers who otherwise would never think of buying a "fantasy" RPG.

To wit:

Chet: "Duuude, have you checked out the DA2 demo, brah?"

JR: "Weaksauce man, goblins and dwarves and stuff are for nerds."

Chet: "No way, brosinski, you gotta check this out - you swing a ****in' sword as long as your body and skeletors blow up in clouds of blood!!  Plus, the chicks have HUGE knockers man, like double Fs! "

JR: "Awesome! I love big-ass swords and big-ass boobies!"

Chet: "You know it, bro."

It's simple really.  Bioware is selling over-the-top, mindless bloody violence with little to no challange and oversexualized women to the lowest common denominator.
Period.
The.
End.

ah right. It didn't seem to happen on the xbox version hence my question about it being an older build. Also enemies appeared to have a lot more health in the PC one and take much longer to die.
