I really liked the new dialog format, and I expected to. FemHawke's voice was fantastic.

I was unhappy with the combat. Note: I don't like or play action games or FPS. I'm also not very good at combat - I enjoy the 'strategy' of combat, so I usually play a mage.

To me the new combat format got in the way, and was awkward and confusing. I sure hope I get to like it more as I play, but as a mage, my first impression was that I preferred combat in DAO - by far.

On xbox - it looked so much improved over DAO.

So, I'm still very excited about DAII - but meh on the 'improved combat'

Maybe I just suck but I lost my Hawke at the Ogre figth, still managed to complete it with just two members.

Uh. On my first play as a mage, everyone died.

Playing as a DW Rogue is awesome. Other than that, I'll post some more constructive feedback when I have played a few more times. :P

Xbox 360 version is very good, PC version is even better.

I loved the opening sequence of badassery. It was a little tough switching to "normal" Hawke after that, but the speed and responsiveness of the controls is exhilarating.

I am loving the new art style. The painterly look of the environments is nice and the character models are lovely. I'm also happy about the cinematic approach to the dialog sequences, a great improvement over the standing in one lace and flailing conversations in Origins.

Of course they skipped a bunch of stuff, they said that the demo skips to later in the game. Also we have seen footage and screenshots of; Hawke on the boat to kirkwall, Meredith the templar lady who orignally blocks your way into kirkwall, and The game informer preview mentions you getting sold to mercs by your uncle and meeting Varric while trying to get funds for expedition to deep roads, so yeah it skipped a LOT.

Umm... guys, don't worry, party members aren't forced on you. I believe that we saw the real Isabela quest when Mike Laidlaw played for the live stream, and it's different to the demo. I also believe that they skipped a whole lotta stuff that happens between the Flemeth meeting and Hawke's meeting with Isabela for the demo.

Really? You believe they skipped? I thought it was painfully obvious since they you know had a fast forward thing going and mentioned it in the forums...

Wait. But couldn't it be that some people will end up playing this demo who do not live on the forums? Perhaps they have other things going on in their lives? You can think it's "painfully obvious" all you like in your sad little world, to the rest of us, it just seems unpolished. Especially considering it's a demo trying to sell people on the game (people who presumably may not have visited the forums to see this "painfully obvious" information).

Aren't you on the forums yourself RIGHT NOW?

look at my post history champ. I signed up today to comment.

Alright, alright, I get it :) But it seems to me there's not much point signing up if you're just going to insult everyone with comments like "sad little lives". Lets call a truce. I shall try to be more polite, and I hope you'll do likewise. After all, we're on a Dragon Age board; we need to band together for the purposes of nerd solidarity! :D

i usually like having subtitles on in case i mis hear anything in the cutscenes but for some reason i find these subtitles very distracting and off puttin, i think it might be because they are so small that i have to really concentrate to read them so i don't see the actions hawke or the person he is conversing with.

Download and install the latest version of DirectX (even if your OS is up to date), then reboot.

[Edit] But you should really report it here.

-No Choice. When you first encounter Varic, the scene jumps are both disorienting and allow for no choice whatsoever as to whether you want anything to do with this guy. No dialogue options are presented... I mean, Varic and Isabella are just IMPOSED on you rather than you deciding to allow them to join you. The game suddenly decides FOR YOU that "you" (ie: Hawke) are going to backup a lady you met only hours earlier in a bar brawl in an alley fight the same night???

You just decide to bring along to this alley fight a dude you met only hours earlier whom you do not know and owes you no loyalty? This series of events make NO SENSE and does not even try to explain itself. It's a situation where the devs have decided, we've created these characters and think they are important or cool so YOU WILL PLAY WITH THEM! Role Playing be damned!

1. This is the demo.  You see the opening, then you are jumped far ahead where you help Isabella.  The actual game you won't help Isabella in the first 15min.

2. What do you expect them to do, allow you to type what you say and their voice over will miraculously read it without sounding like a computer voice reading text, then the game will magically know what responses are next?  Final Fantasy XIII doesn't allow you to pick and choose any dialouge... is it not a Roleplaying Game then?

Well, it's good to know that I don't have to pick up Isabella in my
party if I don't have to. As per your dialogue question I simply feel
that a voiced protagonist and "paraphrased" speech option does not allow
me enough input in to what is said (or enough room for opinion on what
the emotional significance of those words are) than when these variables
are pre-determined by the actor who voiced them. ie: having a pre-set
set of 4 dialogue options which are full sentences and LITERALLY what my
character says is preferable to having a 3 word "generalization" of
what I intend for my character to say and then sitting by and passively
watching the results (with said predetermined tone, inflection,
significance, etc).

This is a barier to me experiencing the game as me. ie: me experiencing/playing the role.

Hearing you explain your views a bit more, I can understand where you're coming from, and I sympathize. People have different tastes, and so I can understand your aversion to the ME2 style conversations. But we did know it was coming; its not as if this is a surprise that was suddenly revealed in the demo. I still have to disagree with your narrow definition of what a role-playing game is, because I feel like Bioware has been consistent to the genre. The question is, do you love the Dragon Age lore enough to stick with the franchise? If not, I feel sorry, because I think you'll be missing out on some great stuff :)

Narrow definition of what role-playing is? Role-playing as someone else character is narrow definition of RPG. How does putting yourself as third person watching a TV screen equate to experiencing the event personally?

This is for discussing the demo, folks. Not for the (by now, done to death) 'what is an rpg' discussion.

- The game asks a lot of the player as far as "emotionally buying in" goes. When Carver or Bethany dies, I suppose I am supposed to care right? The Melodrama seems pretty forced upon the player as they have literraly JUST picked up the controller. Considering I am not playing MY character but playing "HAWKE" who is bioware's character, perhaps they should have built up to the drama a little more rather than expecting me to care that the "red shirt" dies. So what if they label him as my "brother".

I have no experience of him as my brother. It would have been more dramatic to not experience the death in the game but have a brief but poigniant sense of mourning portrayed through a flash back cut scene later in the game. They should have simply aluded to the recent death of my brother or sister early in the game.
See, because this is not my character I don't have the same level of emotional investment. I honestly cared more about the death of Aveline's husband than of hawke's (ie: "my") brother.

Have you played a Bioware game before? From Baldur's Gate (death of foster-father early on) to Jade Empire (kidnapping of mentor early on) to, er, Origins (deaths of parents in HN origin, followed by death of Duncan), this way of encouraging emotional investment in the story is a narrative device oft used by Bioware.  Amongst other game developers/authors/screenwriters. Whether this is a somewhat overused 'hook' is another argument, but it seems a little ... odd? to criticise DA2 specifically for it. Unless you haven't played a Bio game before, that is :?

I'll repost what I think here for the console version of DA2. I'll post some PC feedback later:

"The demo on the console reminded me a lot to Jade Empire. The portraits to the bottom left with the mana/stamina look similar, the constant tapping of (A) and the radial menu are somewhat similar. The gameplay felt smooth and very cool looking, with the running and slashing. Combat was, personally, a little too fast for me. I wasn't sure what was happening some times, being unable to keep up (which led to some of my companions "dying" as I couldn't watch their health, pick a skill/ability to use and tap A constantly). This is more a personal problem for the console version though, as the PC has the "pause-and-command" style, which I will be using instead. Overall combat was fun to watch, but difficult to manage (for me any way).

Regarding dialogue, I was little confused by some of the symbols/icons when choosing your dialogue. For example, what does the purple diamond represent? And what's the difference between the olive and the wings? The paraphrasing was usually fine. I raised my eyebrow at certain things Hawke said, but I didn't mind too much. The voice acting was fine by me, and I liked the "sarcastic" comments the most. Regardless of what dialogue option and sex you initially choose, Hawke will sound like a badass, which was awesome. I was ecstatic watching Flemeth arrive in Dragon form, and the little story I saw I thoroughly enjoyed. Seeing and hearing Varric retell the story of Hawke was great and I felt it was quite a fresh and original way of storytelling.

I like the art. The loading screens were cool, and the music was well done. I enjoyed hearing the title screen and credits music, though the in-game music was less noticeable for me. The graphics are greatly improved, with mostly sharp textures and fluid animations (only things I didn't like were how the darkspawn looked like and some minor instances of low texture resolution, especially visible in the very first cutscene where Varric is dragged into the interrogation room). There were some minor glitches. For example, I chose to wield a sword and a shield, but whenever I was in-combat the sword would be held upside down. Occasionally some textures would glitch and turn white.

It was fun, and I'm eagerly waiting for Dragon Age 2. I can't say I enjoyed more than Dragon Age: Origins, but I have yet to play the full game so there are probably a few more surprises in store for me."

Did anyone else find Wesley's death sad? ): Even though he was all "APOSTATE! TROLL IN THE DUNGEON!", Aveline obviously loved him. I liked her more than I thought I would.

Unless you write the game yourself, you'll ALWAYS be playing as someone else's character, to a degree. Well, I suppose you could play the Sims, or go super old school and find a text-based RPG. But I personally feel Bioware has some of the best writing teams of all modern-day gaming, and asking them to blank-slate everything so you can have the perfect role-playing experience is like asking a professional acrobat to only do jumping jacks for the rest of their lives :) GO BIOWARE!

I absolutely loved the demo, the combat feels so much more alive and you are really more in control during combat now. And the way magic looks now during combat....LOVE IT!!!!

But one question...i finished the demo with Rogue first, now i'm a Mage. During the first battle against the Ogre, you have all kinds of spells you can use. Like Ice and what not..but right after that battle, you can't seem to choose those spells anymore. Please dont tell me the game is gonna choose the magic FOR me? Cause i'd hate that.

 It was pretty terrible.

I agree with you. Since EA had taken over bioware their games had gone from bad to worce.
No1. Voice acting is just plain wooden.
No2. Bad anime design and lazy gameplay.
No3. Hack and slash is terrible and hurts my hand.

Playing on PC, I get to the character creation screen and continue without changing everything and it just crashes, both times I tried in the exact same spot

Difference being in DAO I played MY character. In this I'm playing Hawke. Big difference. My first playthrough in DAO was as a male human warrior noble, about as bland as you can get, but because I made a choice to play as this and had a pre-defined personality I had created in my mind for the character, the death of my parents had actual emotional weight. In fact, I remember commenting to my wife after the human noble origin that "this is going to be an aweseome game" and being truly stoked! I can't say the same about the first act in this game. So the red shirt dies... big deal. Not my brother.

Again, the lack of deathblow animations is making me a bit sceptical(don't tell it's just the gibbing O_o).

Will they be eventually included in the full game?
