Actually rogue was the easiest for me.

I played again with a mage and was literally running away from stuff solo at one point cause I ran out of healing pots. Course..I could have taken heal...but meh.

Anyways, on to my review of the demo:

Honestly, I am of mixed feelings. The choppiness of the cutscenes had me irked as most were I imagine. And the slowdown was noticible on my high end machine...which is unfathomable. Hopefully it'll be better optimized when the game gets to me.

The combat however was simply amazing. Very fun to play. The dialog was nice and I actually like both voices which is a first. Not sure what my first playthrough will be now.

overall...great job so far bioware. Hopefully the bugs will be ironed out. :)

In another note, i still love my Warden the most, and i realy enjoyed the stuff mentioned related to him. Wonder if while i'm playing DA2 and occasionaly hear something about the warden mentioned, if i won't be paying more attention to how great my old char was, than the one i'm currently playing is. Loved the demo, and will be more than happy if DA2 even reaches the heels of how good DA:O was.

I've only played the demo on XBOX360 thus far, but my biggest gripe about the gameplay is the need to constantly mash the "A" button to make your character attack. I much preferred the old method of being able to set my character to attack, and then being able to set up tactics. I like the fact that the tactics, and the ability wheel are still present, but the gameplay still feels a little too hack and slash for me.

Everything else, from the characters, to the story (I really like the idea of the plot running parallel to the Origins storyline), to the overall look of the world, was excellent. I'll definitely be purchasing the game come March but I'm not certain if it will blow me away in the manner in which Dragon Age: Origins did...I guess only time will tell.

Yea, thats why that game still has such a large dedicated fan base today, is regarded as the best RPG ever made, and was the best game bioware ever made.

The tainted iron idea was fine. All you had to do was use magical weapons instead which were easilly available.

Also trying to even imply that Baldurs Gate was in any way worse than DA2 just shows how completely clueless you are about RPgs, its no wonder why you would like DA2 so much.

What? No. No, it isn't and I am in no way alone. There is at least it's sequel, Planescape: Torment and the first two Fallout games that most would rank higher above the first Baldur's Gate. Then, I'd throw in Morrowind and Deus Ex (FPS RPG, but whatever it's a moot point). For what it's worth, I regard (edit) KOTOR as Bioware's best so far.

It's an old game for people who refuse to move on into the present. I used to be like that, and shyed away from anything that wasn't Forgotten Realms. But then I pulled my head out of my arse and realised that a grainy isometric view with a laboured interface isn't the bes thing since sliced bread, especially in 2011.

You Sir/Ma'am/In Between are full of hurr and durr and dare I say it some herpaderpaderp.

Planescape: Torment isn't a sequel to anything!!

Also, if moving on is so important, I bet in 5 years time you'll look back at DA2 and regard it as a piece of crap, whether or not you enjoy it now.

Games don't become 'obsolete' in the same way that technology does. Pong is still very much playable now as it was in the 1970s. As long as a game is playable on modern hardware or through emulation, it can be played and enjoyed. Baldur's Gate is perfectly playable now.

Learn to grammar k thx. In "There is at least it's sequel, Planescape: Torment and", the comma is indicative of a list.

"There is at least it's sequel, Planescape: Torment, and" is a a pause in the sentence to reference a detail. I'm not a spoon, I know my Bioware back catalogue.

My argument isn't that it's NOT playable, but that I think it suffers in presentation and some rather restricitive rule sets in comparison to some of the modern RPGs.

Lulz, sorry, it seems I cannot into grammarrr.

Presentation is subjective, so I'll give you that. Although I think that BG1 played in the BG2 engine is as good, or better than, any modern game presentation wise.

Restrictive rule sets? D&D is much much more comprehensive and open compared to whatever they made up for Dragon Ages O, A and 2. Still, that doesn't mean anything here, since I don't see DA2 as an RPG at all. I'm looking forward to playing it as a cutscene-heavy (extremely easy) action game.

Come on guys. We've already been warned about talking about other RPG's once.

Can someone please be the bigger forumite and walk away?

Just completed my first playthrough of the Demo, male mage.

Though the mage's staff attacks feel more melee than magical, I like it.
It felt how I wanted the Arcane Warrior to be, a combination of melee and magical combat. I loved that the staff animations had differences (minor, but there nonetheless) when in melee or at range, with Hawke actually striking his target with the staff.

The quicker pacing of combat allowed me to kite two of the Hurlock Grunts when fighting the Ogre, since I was the last person standing.
Winter's Grasp, Mind Blast & Fireball whilst kiting two Darkspawn and dodging the Ogre's charges and boulder throws... I. Loved. It. All!

No more were attacks a guaranteed hit when the attack commenced (for melee or the Ogre's boulder throw), and combat movement was much more viable for drawing opposition from a weakened party member.
Overall, the combat was more reminiscient of The Witcher. Which is, in my humble opinion, a damned good thing!

I've kept myself (quite successfully I might add) away from many of the spoilers about some returning characters from Origins/Awakening, and I'm happy I did.
I am truly impressed with the different look for Flemeth. Kate Mulgrew's voice acting, combined with Flemeth's new look, literally made me say aloud WOOOOOOOOW!
She's so much more sinister, and comes across far more as a truly machiavellian creature of awesome power and wisdom. At the same time though, leaving me with a sense that she may very well be a beacon of hope in the coming times.

I'm still riding a sort of "giddy school girl" kind of high at the moment, so I'll update this post when I've;
A) Calmed down some more.
and;
B) Played through as a Warrior and a Rogue. Which I'm very much looking forward to doing.

What happened to the ability to see the enemies' health bar when you press Tab? It's really a pain to have to pause the game and check EVERY - SINGLE - ENEMY to know who to turn to next in a fight.

Look in the options .  You can turn it on.

You sure? I honestly can't find it anywhere.

System: Xbox 360

I REALLY enjoyed the demo. The new mage combat system is epic, it feels like you're in the game instead of sitting there and pressing a button. I can't say I have any cons, I didn't get any glitches, and I love the expression wheel, combat, and characters. I will be in even more agony waiting for the full game to arrive.

It'll be a good game gameplay-wise, clearly, but it's sorely lacking in polish.
----------------------------------------------------------
+ Combat is awesome.

+ All of the classes rock.

+ Awesome abilities.

+ Art Style and combat animations are solid.
---------------------------------------------------------
- Conversation movements are really robotic and sudden.

- Mid-cutscene loading... Ugh...

- Conversations felt felt kind of stilted frequently.

- Some VA was sudden and rushed. The "Castillon needs a new hobby." line by Male Hawke was awful.

- Women's running animation makes it look like they're walking on air instead of on the ground. It's just really slow.

- Enemies pop/spawn into the environment out of nowhere very frequently. So do certain objects when you're a certain distance away from them.

- Visuals are very sub-par. Character models don't even look that good. Aveline's whole dress looks painted on and so does Bethany's.

- Camera isn't as good as in Origins.
-------------------------------------------------------

It'll be an enjoyable game, but the presentation is pretty pathetic compared to ME2. At this rate, anyway.

Personally, I enjoyed it.

The combat animation and style was not nearly as rigid and stuffy as the original. There was a lack of strategy, but I will say that is because I didn't mess with weapons, behaviors, and my members only had a few abilities in the demo...

The story chops are acceptable as well. I am assuming that the main storyline will flow slower and smoother. (I even feel like the cutscene jumps in the middle of the battles were trying to push me along as if to say "this is just a demo, keep moving".

The game looks loads better than the original console versions, and I am assuming that the full graphic version for PC will alleviate some of the complaints that our PC brethren are having.

I don't get why half of you guys are complaining about things we knew about months ago (camera, dialogue wheel, etc....).

kind of finding it weird that some ppl think this is just button mashing while in dragon age origins you can kill everything very easy with just auto-attack as an arcane warrior

Uh, this has kind of single handedly converted me to mages, after being lukewarm towards them for basically the entirety of Origins. Combat was pretty nice (and more importantly, fun), but I do wish more difficulties were available - without friendly fire it became pretty easy, although I do appreciate (and in equal measure hate) the cooldown time on the health poultices. (Are they still called poultices? I didn't check.)

My laptop definitely didn't enjoy running it at above low settings, although considering I have DX11 it might be a good idea to see if that makes a difference. Loading times weren't brilliant (most particularly one during the Varric interrogation), but manageable and seemed to become less frequent over the course of the demo. Also, I've absolutely no idea how much of that to accredit to my system rather than the game.

Combat sucks feels like jrpg.
Dialgoue wheel is insult to precious DA.
Bad voice acting and writing.

Everything else just fine.

Ok, got it working *properly* and played through it. I still stand by my disappointment with the *demo* for not just working right off the bat, but as this is obviously an earlier build I'm no longer worried about my choice of platform (PC).

Once I got the thing to play smoothly it was more like what I was expecting. There are some graphical nitpicks I have, and I could only play on medium, so I'll reserve judgment on those for the moment. The graphics and animations are an improvement over Origins for sure, which puts them in the "decent" category (higher marks for the visual style, which is pretty great), though my opinion could change with high res textures.

Combat was indeed faster and more responsive but I do agree that it still feels like Origins' at its core. I don't think I have enough experience with the new skill tree setup yet to make up my mind about it, but from the little interaction we had with it I think it's an improvement.

Animations during cutscenes are sort of mixed. Some of them are great and natural-looking and some of them aren't, especially the "widened angry eyes" look...which looks a little weird. Varric's smirk is fabulous though (as are the rest of his animations, on the whole). Cass suffered from lipsynching issues at a couple points but I'm told this is fixed in the final build. The loading during cutscenes thing which I found jarring was no longer an issue once I set the demo to DX11 (so that it used DX10 instead of 9). Female Hawke's walk/run animations have been over-corrected, however. She runs in a rather limp-wristed manner and with an apparently dislocated pelvis. Ouch. Some sort of median between Origins' animation and DA2's would have been nice, but something to shoot for, for next time I guess.

I do like the windup animations the ogres have now, so you can dodge their specials, and the toned-down persistent skill effects are nice. Voice acting, as expected, is great, but I think I actually like male Hawke better than female.

So those are my impressions.

I played on PC.

Things I liked:

- The new combat speed is really nice. I was (quietly) skeptical through the prerelease hype but after trying it out I think it was the right call.

- I like what I've seen so far of the frame narrative. It seems to me like the writers were really excited to play with it, and even with this small piece of the game, it shows. I love that the dragon shows up in Varric's exaggerated fictional account and then again in the "real" one -- the exact same cutscene got two "oh ****" moments out of me. :-)

- I'm glad Hawke can speak (and that both voice actors sound good!). I played Origins before the Mass Effect games, so going from silent protagonist to voiced to voiced-with-icons has felt like a very natural progression to me. When I went back to finally play through Awakening last month, it felt like a regression.

- Speaking of which, the cutscenes look fantastic, especially the facial animations. I underestimated how important it is to be able to show the main character talk; it makes the conversations feel so much more dynamic.

- I like the new UI design. It doesn't look like traditional fantasy to me -- it actually has a vaguely Art Deco feel, a la Civilization V -- but the austerity is a welcome change from the somewhat oppressive look of Origins.

Things I didn't like:

- It was buggy. Before I could load it I had to muck around with DirectX installs to grab that missing DLL file; then, in playing through the demo twice, I crashed four times. That's more than I got in 80+ hours of playing Origins.

- Like others, I got a ton of pauses for loading in the middle of cutscenes/dialogs. My computers' specs are above the minimum requirements, but not by much, so I don't know whether to attribute this to the old demo branch or my machine. (Either way, the fact that there are performance fixes of this magnitude between the demo and the GM means I can't really predict how the game will run.)

- I'm not a big fan of the new combat animations. I like that they're faster, and they definitely pop more, but to my eye they went too far in the direction of being cartoonish.

- I'm sure I'm alone here, I almost wish the second bit in Kirkwall wasn't there. The cutscene video that transitions from meeting Flemeth to killing thugs with Isabela felt abrupt, and I wasn't very clear on what was going on. I'm sure it all makes sense in the full game, but in the demo that whole scene seemed like an excuse to say "check out the sexy pirate girl who flirts with you" without providing much context. Still, more content is more content!

I suggest turning everything else off and just walk away from the comp for awhile so your comp doesn't strain so much.

Agreed - the rogue is like a shark - the slower they move, the faster they die.

All in all - really enjoyed the demo, was a bit worried my PC wasn't going to cut it, but ran smooth on 1920x1080, medium, and 8x AA.

The dialogue wheel felt natural and fem-hawkes (haven't played male yet) VA was solid.

My only gripe so far is that i cant get past the ogre wave no many how many times i retry. I can't set the demo to an easier mode, or use a cheat, so i guess i'll just have to wait till Mar. 8th to get anywhere in this game. Yes, I know i suck as a player cause i cant get past this, but after trying to beat the ogre 15 times, its not any fun anymore.

Guess I'll just watch the new game footage on Gamespot with more Fenris stuff Posted Image

For anybody who has any 'emotional attachment' problems here is what I do (and will do)

~ The game is not going to do EVERYTHING for you, it's not going to control your mind and make you in love with a LI or make you sad for your sisters death. YOU have to do some work to. Think of it as if it were your REAL sibling or someone very close to you, then think about your feelings towards that...end result you end up watery eyed and start crying.

From what I saw of the demo footage you can be very 'meh' about your sibling's death. I don't think going "C'MON LETS GO" in front of your dead brother/sister is being sensitive. But still, some of you guys are quite heartless, if not 'robotic' in the way you think about other people. This is a family, and like it or not someone who you have grown up with for almost twenty years is going to have an effect on that somebody.

"Do we have to like them?" Really? Like I said before "ROBOTIC"

It's getting to that point in the first place though, and it's a matter of choice.

There is an option for auto-attack, but it's disabled in the demo although I doubt this will help in the discussions about combat problems.

First off i lold when i saw fempirate, it was an immersion breaker.

The faces in game looks to much like a barbie, please give us some realism in face textures.

The world looks stuning even on medium graphics settings wich is a huge plus, but the lack of flora and such makes the game world see to much like a cube.

Combat in general is easy and "clutter" free but i find swords to much underpowered,

and a big plus goes to the feel of the crossbow.

Magic needs more spells and faster time to reuse spells, ohter than that it looks really cool.

And last, 3 main options on the conversation ring is too little for us pc players.

Thanks for the demo.

I liked it a lot... :) can't wait for march harhar...
The combat action is way more fun than origins though I found it quite easy seems I need a higher difficulty
and I really was stunned by flemeth... she's so cool :D
the voice is so diabolical
cool stuff... great work :)
