Dragon Age 2 Demo feedback thread

I enjoy thoroughly the new combat system, even if I have to press A, again and again.
I too would like some understanding as to what the hell the dialogue icons mean? Wasn't the intention of them so that we could understand what tone hawke would use?
At this point it's MORE confusing. A dramatic arts mask and a purple diamond? Oh of course he's going to wish to be a dragon............
Regarding the dialogue.....Flow is awful, framerate hiccups between each dialogue choice. Hawke does move his face and body more throughout conversations but still is incredibly robotic.
Perhaps I'm spoiled by Mass effect but the dialogue just doesn't seem right, especially when the responses you get from NPC's seem so ambiguous and envitable that regardless of the dialogue choice that would always be the reaction.
Worst Offence: The loss of party communication on the fly, I know have to wait from places like camp and so on. Very upsetting.

- The game asks a lot of the player as far as "emotionally buying in" goes. When Carver or Bethany dies, I suppose I am supposed to care right? The Melodrama seems pretty forced upon the player as they have literraly JUST picked up the controller. Considering I am not playing MY character but playing "HAWKE" who is bioware's character, perhaps they should have built up to the drama a little more rather than expecting me to care that the "red shirt" dies. So what if they label him as my "brother".
I have no experience of him as my brother. It would have been more dramatic to not experience the death in the game but have a brief but poigniant sense of mourning portrayed through a flash back cut scene later in the game. They should have simply aluded to the recent death of my brother or sister early in the game.
See, because this is not my character I don't have the same level of emotional investment. I honestly cared more about the death of Aveline's husband than of hawke's (ie: "my") brother.
Have you played a Bioware game before? From Baldur's Gate (death of foster-father early on) to Jade Empire (kidnapping of mentor early on) to, er, Origins (deaths of parents in HN origin, followed by death of Duncan), this way of encouraging emotional investment in the story is a narrative device oft used by Bioware. Amongst other game developers/authors/screenwriters. Whether this is a somewhat overused 'hook' is another argument, but it seems a little ... odd? to criticise DA2 specifically for it. Unless you haven't played a Bio game before, that is
Difference being in DAO I played my character. In this I'm playing Hawke. Big difference. My first playthrough in DAO was as a male human warrior noble, about as bland as you can get, but because I made a choice to play as this and had a pre-defined personality I had created in my mind for the character, the death of my parents had actual emotional weight. In fact, I remember commenting to my wife after the human noble origin that "this is going to be an aweseome game" and being truly stoked! I can't say the same about the first act in this game. So the red shirt dies... big deal. Not my brother.
What a batty boy.

I absolutely loved the demo, the combat feels so much more alive and you are really more in control during combat now. And the way magic looks now during combat....LOVE IT!!!!
But one question...i finished the demo with Rogue first, now i'm a Mage. During the first battle against the Ogre, you have all kinds of spells you can use. Like Ice and what not..but right after that battle, you can't seem to choose those spells anymore. Please dont tell me the game is gonna choose the magic FOR me? Cause i'd hate that.
Anyone have any idea about this?

It's Origins with an improved version of my favorite dialogue system of all time
Funny choice of words considering there are no origins in DA2, just one predefined character.

Did anyone else find Wesley's death sad? ): Even though he was all "APOSTATE!TROLL IN THE DUNGEON!", Aveline obviously loved him. I liked her more than I thought I would.
it was sad, poor Aveline forced to kill Wesley like that.
I really liked that you have no idea what choice you shall make in that scene? let Aveline or Hawke do it?
I imagine that if Hawke do it then Aveline will make Hawke regreat it later in game but who knows?
edit: btw I believe DA2 dialouge system is giant improve from DA1 dialouge system

You're cute. After the short "origins", you played a character that was as much predefined as Hawke is in this game beyond your race. I don't see the reason behind your angst.

Really? For your information I am creating my own story whether as stand alone campaign or within the confine of official story. But I guess you don't understand the function of customization element in RPG, now do you?. I don't blame you. But can you just play Super Mario Bros without hiding behind RPG title?BioticYoda wrote...

Narrow definition of what role-playing is? Role-playing as someone else character is narrow definition of RPG. How does putting yourself as third person watching a TV screen equate to experiening the event personally?
Unless you write the game yourself, you'll ALWAYS be playing as someone else's character, to a degree. Well, I suppose you could play the Sims, or go super old school and find a text-based RPG. But I personally feel Bioware has some of the best writing teams of all modern-day gaming, and asking them to blank-slate everything so you can have the perfect role-playing experience is like asking a professional acrobat to only do jumping jacks for the rest of their livesGO BIOWARE!
We have been reminded by Moderator to leave this one out. I'll respect it by not replaying to your post any further.
Thank you.

-Trouble reading text on a 22" LCD from 5' away.
Have to sit up close to the TV to read- feel like a little kid again, waiting for Mom to come in the room and tell me to back up or else I will go blind.
Other than that, I'm enjoying the demo.
Really like the faster combat, no more waddling around the battlefield like my Warrior has IBS.

XBOX version:
I'm glad I tried it, I will be buying this version too.
The combat feels fluid with the controller and I had no issues figuring it out only after a couple of minutes.
I like the dialogue wheel a lot better then the previous version of the system (big fan of ME as well) so I think it's a much welcomed change.
Oh and Isabella...she is blessed.
Yep, shallow and proud.

I think its because he was telling the "legend" the first time, and in the second go around it was the actual story, who knows tho.
