Just finished the Demo on the PC, and here's what I think:
The art style was more or less what I expected, but the combat and animations most certainly weren't. Combat was a bit like out of a japanese cartoon or sth. Huge swords, flashes of light when executing special moves... c'mon, that's too final fantasy for my taste. I understand that now the combat has become dynamic, but if I wanted to play a cRPG with dynamic combat and button mashing I would wait for Diablo 3. And Flemeth's new appearance is just laughable, now she wears a kinky milf outfit and probably needs to use a ton of hair gel for those horns of her... That's just dumb.
What made DAO stand out was the combat which had a realistic feeling to it, it was a proper dark fantasy where even the teeth colour did not conform to hollywood trends. Now we're getting a semi-anime with characters blessed with huge breasts, perfect teeth and SpiderMan-like reflexes. And why mages now feel the need to breakdance with their staffs while using the standard attack? When they're in melee, animation looks cooler, but when an enemy is two screens away (more or less, impossible to tell with the constrained camera movement) and the mage keeps jumping around with his staff... well, it is a bit retarded.
I understand that the current trend in video games is that everything must be 'cool', with lots of special effects and that every character needs a wide array of superhuman abilities, but DA2 crossed the line for me. I bought every single Bioware game since Baldur's Gate, and I always considered myself to be a loyal fan. I even bought three copies of DAO: US collector's edition, Polish dubbed version and the Ultimate Edition on Steam. Not to mention I even fell for all the DLCs before I got the Ultimate Edition. I will still probably buy DA2, but I am not awaiting it as eagerly as before the demo. Anyway, if DA franchise continues in this direction I don't think I'll be buying any future sequels.
I'll give the game a try, sure. But after that I'll probably play through Baldur's Gate II for the nth time. And I'm looking forward to The Witcher 2, maybe not a proper RPG when it comes down to combat mechanics, but hopefully they'll get the mature fantasy theme right with more dialogue options than just the standard 'the good, the bad and the something-in-between'.
That's what I think about the demo, but I reserve my final verdict for the retail version.
