Second playthrough

Lady Hawke's voice acting is quite distinctive and characterful. Great for an NPC, not sure about for a PC.

Heroic Aura seems very effective. The ogre actually gave me some trouble without it on - which led to me doing a bit of kiting, which seemed too effective.

Well I played the PC version of the demo and, I'm pretty conflicted on it. I've found that a lot of my worries about the game turned out to be true, but that a good few weren't as well, which is good. The game plays well and definitely feels like Origins, but some stuff just doesn't feel right for me.

For starters, I suppose, the combat animations are completely ridiculous. Seeing the characters doing all this lightning-fast stuff just looks stupid, especially when a warrior gets close to an enemy by somehow rocketing towards it, fast enough for a trail of smoke/dust to be left in his wake. He's either got rocket boots or he's part road-runner, either way it looks derpy as hell.
It's just that it's all unnecessary flourish, like they're showing off or something. They do all this twirly, flippy ****, when it's just not needed. It's like walking across a room by doing back flips. Why bother doing that, when you can just walk. You just look like silly. And that's how everyone looks in the game and it completely takes me out of the fight. The fact that most enemies explode into giblets for no particular reason only makes it worse.

I'm sure a ton of people have already discussed the camera, so I'm just going to say that it does feel really restrictive not being able to zoom out more, and I hope a mod is eventually released to fix it.

I will say that the dialogue wheel isn't as annoying as it was in Mass Effect and that the icons are a big help. I don't think I'd know what I was choosing without it. I'm still not a fan of the voiced protagonist, but it wont bother me too much in this case.

All in all, the game I loved is still there, it just feels like it's been covered up with a bunch of garnishes and flashiness that it never needed, and is worse off for it. It's mainly the stylistic choices that are bringing the experience down for me, so I'm hoping that I'll get used to it as the game goes on, but right now it really bugs the hell out of me, for lack of a better phrase.

Dragon Age 2 doesn't seem to be a bad game by any means, just... really disappointing.

Thanks for the demo. My feedback:

Nice graphics. Runs well even with my old machine.

Loading pauses within cutscenes if vsync is enabled.

Weird camera shake sometimes after backstab.

Rouge was MUCH easier to play through then mage.

Oh, and one more thing. VAs.

I worry a lot about VAs in roleplaying games. A good VA can make even mediocre writing shine, whereas a bad VA can kill an otherwise great character in about five seconds. I have to say that the VAs for the most part are solid, if not extraordinary. Other than Varric, who just has the coolest voice given to man or dwarf.

I was actually most impressed with Isabella's VA. She still "felt" like Isabella from Origins even though her character design and voice actress changed. The VA sounded similar enough to the Origins VA to make her identifiable, but not so similar that she evoked Anora, the original VA's other and more significant role in Origins.

For PC gameplay, holding the right mouse-button for camera view and using W,A,S,D helps tremendously ... I did it automatically, so I didn't really experience any major problems with the controls on the PC.

Played on X360.

The demo is really good, but there are 2 small and 1 huge problems:

- the sound when shooting from the distance using staff... srlsy, blaster sound? Is it dark fantasy or Star Wars?

- targeting system is horrible. I can put up with crosshair being almost invisible, but the rest is just bad. Before I targeted the emissary, he had already taken away 70% of my HP. The ogre fight was also really troublesome.

- FFS, why have you made the text so friggin small!? Just like with ME2! Font size in DA:O and ME was just PERFECT. Did anyone complain about it's size in DA:O? Oh, wait, they did. People complained about the text being too small! And now you've made it so small that I had to take 2 breaks because I felt like my eyes were about to bleed ffs! Because of that I HAVE CANCELLED MY PREORDER. Damn... I've always liked you. BG, NWN, KotOR... awesome RPGs. Thanks to them you've gained my absolute trust. But now... you're dangerously close to losing it.

Quick question, why was the inventory & character creator not included in the demo?

Played the PC demo.

Art style was better then I expected. It looked good enough and ran smoothly for me. The combat seemed out of touch for me. Auto attack worked fine enough but having to hit a skill 5 times before it thinks about working even with it off cooldown was annoying. I also had problems where I'd right click a npc to attack, select a skill and it would make me reselect the npc I wanted to attack. I found this utterly annoying.

I am not going to be a happy camper when it comes to warriors though. Am I mistaken they took duel wielding away from warriors? Two handed is just so sub par. It was ok in the first playable area but when it jumps backwards (annoying as hell), two handed starts to feel like a large stick of bread that's being swung. I mean this overly large two handed sword and it when it hits it almost doesn't move the enemy health bar. I didn't play through on any other classes at this point. I was disapointed enough with what I saw for classes I really didn't want to see any more.

It just seems the combat trees are dumbed down. You get a few choices and ones for upgrades but it doesn't feel like I'm building my character the way I want, it feels like I'm being led to choose a limited number of options. This didn't make me happy.

Just my 2 cents.

God so stupid kids this days it's called DA 2 not a remake of 1 !!!
it's verry complex, fun and verry good game keep up the good work Bioware

Honestly, it's you that sound like a little kid.

The game may very well be complex, the demo however isn't the slightest complex. The combats were all extremely easy, you barely had to do anything. And the player had practically no input at all into how the story progressed.

It seems that this is a sequel that is very dumbed down for people like you. Glad you like it though!

You know I see comments like this and I think people have let their brains fall out of their heads. Demos rarely are "complex" and you want "story progression" in what is essentially a gameplay sneak peak?

I mean if they demoed up DAO and gave you Ostagar and part of the wilds wouldn't that seem all linear and not much choice?

I was impressed by all the classes and the combat in general. The voice acting seems solid, the animations are great, and the pacing was good. All in all I'd say its far superior to Origins on the technical side of things, I can't really say anything about the story till I play the whole game but from the bit in the demo its shaping up to be pretty amazing. Great job DA team.

If I had one critisism I would, surprisingly enough, say the writing. There are a couple of lines in the early going that are fairly akward but I'm sure that will smooth out as players get into the meat of the game.

Edit: Also think I should mention that as someone who first played Origins on the Xbox and then later got the UE on PC (mainly for all the mods) and thought it was exponentially better. I am extremely impressed with how improved it is on console and am confident I made the right choice to preorder DA2 for the Xbox.

Erm, please tell I was being delusional when the tactics bar denied me from using potions. As a matter of fact, I don't even think tactics allow you to make sure your companions to be programmed to use lyrium or health potions.

Gone through my 3rd playthrough now on the PC (all the classes).

The rogue is the most fun, followed by the mage. The warrior's certainly a tank, but not quite as fun as the others.

I noticed a couple more hiccups as well:

- There was a point in the 2nd Kirkwall fight where the main character could not select anything on-screen. You could select abilities in the bottom bar with the mouse, but nothing else in the main screen (enemies, allies, treasure...). After the fight I went to the character screen and back and it seemed to be okay after that.

- I paid close attention to where the AoE effects the other party members laid down. If it's moving, they'll miss. If the target(s) are not moving sometimes they'll target right, but other times they'll place it completely away from the fight. I noticed this in the Chantry fight where little sis dropped fireballs out in the middle of nowhere. Some targeting issues to be sure.

- I noticed that even in Kirkwall sometimes the rest of the party members would just stand there and take no action, even when getting attacked. Once you get them started manually, most of the time they would "come to life" after that and attack normally.

+ Graphics look much improved, even only on medium.
+ Faster gameplay and animations seems great so far.
+ Overall, it looks like a big improvement over DA:O gameplay-wise.

- Demo waaaay too easy
- Party AI is ABSOLUTELY TERRIBLE. Crowd of darkspwan running at you? Don't worry, Bethany will send a fireball 20 feet behind them.
- UI looks ugly and out of place.
- Sustained spell effects all look absolutely terrible so far (Heroic Aura turns your entire party into walking yellow glow blobs, wtf???)
- Still upset that there's no friendly fire toggle or at least 50% friendly fire damage on Hard.
- Floating weapons and no bowstrings? In 2011? Really Bioware?

Downloaded the 360 demo and  I love the changes immensely; especially to the rogue class. Thanks bioware for making the two week wait until release absolutely unbearable.

My only criticism is the text in the menus are extremely small and I had to move uncomfortably close to my 40" HD Tv just to read everything.  Hopefully there will be options to change the formatting so that text can be larger or something.  Please look into this, especially for people like me that enjoy reading every codex entry.  Thanks!!

Did you have moments where your character:
(1) went so fast that you could not enjoy the conflict, nor could you see any moment where the blade made contact with the enemy?
(2) got lost within the mob of Darkspawn while fighting, and you could not tell where your character was?

Combat looked too messy. I couldn't enjoy the battles, for they were moving way too fast. It was similar to rolling up a candy wraper and tossing it across the screen. I heard a lot of metal clashing, but it was going so fast that I had to look away. I stopped playing because it was overwhelming.

you should be fine if you turn the difficulty setting down to 'easy' when you get the game. Hang in there, hopefully you'll be able to have fun with it. :)

Thanks.  That sort of depresses me though. (LOL)  I played DA:O in either "normal" or "hard".  Still never got that achievement in Golems for the Harvester on hard though.

1. Bad camera angle on PC: This shows me how much I miss the overview-tactical-view.

2. Monotone mood: The enviroment in Lothering dont feel menacing, depressing or fearful, just laziness from the developer's part. There is no passion. Even in Kirkwall (when meeting Isabella) felt emotionless.

3. Loading screens while fighting.........ruins the moment when you kill an ogre...

4. Monotone voice acting, dont feel the passion behind it, or seeing facial expressions that stand out. Shepard expressions = awesome

5. The fighting....hack and slash...unnatural. Just felt like I was using Charge from WoW again.

6. Great we went back to the Shepard-conversation wheel...Up for good guy, Down for renegade, middle for neutral. Shepard Wheel feels more natural in mass effect.

Conclusion: Made for consoles use I see, and for Bioware to reach the "casual gamers" out there. I guess they really didn't like people not finishing Dragon Age I that much. People really have no patience these days.

With all that said. Gonna play it till the end and hear in Dragon Age II all the brave things my Warden did in Dragon Age I. With any luck they might let me keep the finishing moves when killing darkspawn and ogres in a spectacular way, if not I'm gonna be sad.
