Dragon Age 2 Demo feedback thread

I had my concerns about the game being overly action oriented, but strategy plays such an important part of it that I rather enjoyed the combat for a change, although I do find all the jumping around a little over the top at times. The worst part about the jumping as that if I clicked an opponent to attack and there was an obstruction, instead of going around it, the character would try to jump through the obstruction, which I found rather annoying.
I am really intrigued by the story line and, while I did have reservations about the fully voiced protagonist conversation system, it seems to be fairly intuitive and works out better than I expected.
As for the Demo itself, I was a bit frustrated that I couldn't save at strategic points, a quick-save would have been nice, but I had to leave it on pause to go do something at one point and when I restarted it (was paused at the entrance to the Chantry) the game crashed, and I had to start over from the beginning.
Overall, graphics were smooth, and looked good. I used the default video settings. In all, I was very pleased with the video performance. I don't know how much harder the full game will be on my old (6 years) computer, but I suspect that if I use the same settings as I did in the Demo, performance will be decent enough to really enjoy the game.

as male rogue, game froze when the 'real' escape story was being told. Disappointing, total turnoff, made me remember all the annoying bugs in the first dragon age.
well, forced my ps3 off, restarted as female rogue. this time it worked.
Pros: graphics are slight improvement, not amazing. combat is faster and fluid, but button mashing not fun. special moves have awesome animations.
Cons: Characters, hopefully there will be some amazing character build up in the game, cause right now, i could care less for all of them. Origins characters were appealing jut by looking at them, here they all so generic.
Oh and a big thing someone correct me if im wrong, but why do Darkspawn have RED BLOOD????

Look, the game looks great, despite the new style, but animations of the Darkspawn are REALLY choppy. I'm checking my framerate and changing graphics settings... this game's animations don't flow as well as before. However, the characters do LOOK amazing. But the Seeker... her facial expressions don't match up too well with her emotions... and her lips are off-sync. Love that Dwarf though. Still haven't played through the whole thing, as the game just crashed while loading the part after the huge beginning battle. But so far it's pretty good.
Oh.
I love the new combat. It took me a second to get used to it, but it's so amazing. LOVE IT.
Otherwise, it feels pretty "meh" at the moment... I'll see if I can get it working. But the mid-cutscene loading is annoying... lots of pros and lots of cons...

I have to say that so far I am impressed greatly with the direction it took from DAO. Very good job devs, if the story equals or exceeds DAO, then I will have to say you finally have a BG2 killer! ;p
Oh! And I love how tapping R autoloots everything!

Push your left thumbstick in. It'll lock target or unlock if you have one locked. Same on PS3.
Thanks, really appreciate the response
However, not to be a pain but nothing happened when I tried it there. Still had the issue with the locked enemy not really being locked as my target and my character losing the target and wandering away to fight something else.
Maybe it's just a small bug on the 360 version, it wasn't listed on the control list or maybe our idea of locked is slightly different. (To clarify incase it's the latter, I'm meaning like in games when you hold LT, for example and your camera and attacks lock to the specific enemy rather than being free. Even the same as DA:O would help out because you're still attached to the one enemy.)
Downloading the PS3 demo just now, hopefully L3 will work.
Like I said, I appreciate the response so I don't mean to sound ungrateful in this comment.

This is what I noticed from playing the demo on my playthrough. I do not know if we get to know what Lothering was like in DA2 before the dark spawn hit, but there were too many early npc/companion deaths that I didn't care for. Meaning that they died and my thoughts were "meh." The brother and husband I knew for all of 10 minutes so them dying wasn't emotional to me at all, no bonding.
Auto combat was faster and more fluid so each fight was nice. Though the fights were odd. I saw no real difference in dmg when attacking archer darkspawn or melee darkspawn. But that is just nit-picking. Now what bothered me were the cooldowns. To me the magic heal seemed to have a 15+ second CD. Why that bothered me was because when I use Warriors I tend to act like the tank and get as many as possible where I do not become overwhelmed and have everyone pick them off. With the CD so high such a tactic would be unwise and that was just from holding off 2-3 darkspawn at one time.
The companion AI could use a little tweaking. The sister was bellow a hill in the beginning of the demo and kept cast magic that kept hitting the hill. I figured that she was killing darkspawn left and right since she was taking very little to no dmg...but nope she was attacking a wall.
The dialogue wheel I enjoyed. I just hope that you don't cut back on companion/group banter because of it, I really hope so.
That is all I can say really. I can't really comment on the art, environment or companions because we just got a crumb of what to expect. Still keeping my Signature Pre-Order though.

Hello, nightmare difficulty? You can have all the friendly-fire incidents you want if you change the difficulty in the actual game.

Is the demo supposed to end at the character creation screen? Because that's how far it would allow me to go (PS3 version).
Okay, for some reason, if you wait long enough you will eventually be able to continue passed the character creator screen. Only a few more thoughts to add: Aveline's hair is very very very very orange
Lastly: Carver died by Ogre, but when my party went to meet Isabela there he was in my party with no Bethany in sight. I giggled. Also, the darkspawn's "woopwoopwoop!" run also made me giggle.
Overall? My plan hasn't changed: rent DA2 before buying.

If there will be any possibility of modding this, I'm sure we'll get TONS of facemods, just like in the first game, so I wouldn't worry too muchBrawne wrote...
Too bad that they cant switch Isabel's face with Cassandra's face.
Cassandra is just adorable while main LI Isabel badly needs new promotional item - "Paper Bag".
You register with your EA account from the demo's main menu, I assume you can do that with the Steam demo as well.Krimson_Wolf wrote...

I completely agree. Playing the demo on the PC was a terrible experience and paled in comparison to my experiences with DA: O on the PC. Playing it on the console, on the other hand, was fun. The reason for this is the fact that the PC version is indeed a console port. The terrible UI design on the PC works quite well on the consoles. There is no clutter of the PC UI present in the console UI. The awkward attack animations are also gone from the console version as there is no auto attack. Everything wrong in the PC version is due to laziness when translating console elements to the PC.Zanderat wrote...
Bad console port is bad.
This is a very sad day for me. My worst fears for DA have been realized.
It's a shame Bioware neglected the PC version this time around, but IF mod support is indeed present, then maybe all is not lost.

I loved origins and maybe that is why I am undecided. Combat seems very rushed ( dynasty warriorsish) whilst I didnt hate the combat style, it may take some getting used to. Playing as a rogue, that second ogre was a pain in the butt, but as the warrior, piece of cake. At certain points characters would face the rocks and not engage in combat, ticking me off to no end. Had a play with the with the mage and did enjoy the use of the staff as a weapon. I fully expect the finished version to be more polished and crisp. I suppose it was a bit like Warhammer when it was in beta, when it launched it was exceptional.
One thing I did find distracting was that a few of the voices seemed earily familiar and it was a bit off putting as the voices didn't fit "the old faces" based on what I saw, I will give it 7.5/10

Demo has left me feeling a little conflicted.
GOOD
--Combat felt fluid and responsive.
--Mage, Warrior, and Archery animations were good. Flashy but didn’t clutter the screen with effects.
--Personality tracking worked as expected.
--Overall art style distinctive and expressive. (Set the mood, as it were.)
--GUI is very nice. Sound effects were spiffy.
--Talent streamlining –every talent felt worthwhile/distinct.
BAD
--Some textures were very blurry. Seemed even less consistent than DA:O in that regard.
--Dagger Rogue animations didn’t have real weight behind them and/or made combat visually disorienting.
--FemHawke’s run animation is choppy.
--Cutscene animations felt off – bugg-eyed, distorted eyebrows, fingers bending unnaturally, clipping etc.
--Some of the Voice Acting felt stilted, dialogue didn’t flow very well.
--Locked inventory. ‘Nuff said.
WTF?!
--Isabela’s tunic bottom magically shrunk during a cutscene.
--Wesley dying had more emotional impact than your sibling dying. Really…?
--Flemmeth is damn sexy. Grrow!
--Archers are BAMF.
--I like cheese.
I'm sure I'll think of more when I've had time to process.

Good: Music
Okayish: Combat, the skillsystem. storytelling.
Not good: Voice acting, graphics/animations, the dialogue system.
Also, what about backstory? my village was destroyed, why do I care? My brother who I just met 2 minutes ago died, am I supposed to care? Why am I suddenly here helping Isabella?

Why does the game only have Directx 11 and 9. Usually a game with 11 has 10 and 9, but 10 seems to not missing, just straight up not included. The visual configuration needs to be fixed because it is incredibly hard to navigate even for a seasoned PC gamer. This probably partly due to the lack of a directx 10 and 10.1 option as well as some other flaws. Fraps doesn''t seem to want to overlay the game right now, so until then I will not comment on the performance, but it seems stuttery.
Before anyone bad mouths my machine being a pentium 4 gateway here are the specs I'm using:
Intel Core i7 920 OCed to 3.8ghz H20 Cooled.
6 gigs of ram OCed to 1600mhz 3x2gb sticks.
Quad SLi 295 GTX's (I get that this can't handle tesselation technology, but it has the architecture to handle every other feature of DX11)
The gameplay is matched my expectations, and the presentation is awesome, but I was hoping for some sharper textures, but if that will never get fixed, I'm sure the community will create high-def ones.
Nevermind this answers my question.

My primary criticism is Graphical, regarding the characters' blackened lower incisors, their teeth.
I'm running an ATI-5970, latest approved drivers, and getting good performance with DirectX-11 selected (whether it is true or not that DX-11 is enabled in the demo)...1280 X 960 with X2 AA, high detail... but all the characters lower front teeth are mostly black, with one or two stubs of gold sticking up from the gumline. Possibly a settings issue but I didn't try and play with the settings overmuch since it was otherwise everything I could have wanted.
Secondary, and rather minor criticism is that some of the two handers are too massive, especially the double-bitted battleaxe slung from the shoulders of the woman who took the thrown dagger in the chest.

I was surprised to hear that the casual 360/PS3 players were actually having a negative reaction.
One guy posted; "I expected bad. I got even worse".
A few comments said the health bars looked cheap, others that it was boring (which I was really shocked to hear tbh).
I thought they'd be all over the new style.
Then again, there were comments on Youtube that said it was awesome (Like this comment if you thought demo was kewl!!!).
I thought I might dislike parts of the demo, but I'm shocked to hear the mainstream crowd agrees
Moreover, they're complaining about it being boring "like the last one".

Right. Because two very different writing teams for two very different games will somehow maliciously team up and ruin your expectations AGAIN.
