I loved it! DA:O wasn't responsive enough on 360. This is super responsive and super fun.

- The game asks a lot of the player as far as "emotionally buying in" goes. When Carver or Bethany dies, I suppose I am supposed to care right? The Melodrama seems pretty forced upon the player as they have literraly JUST picked up the controller. Considering I am not playing MY character but playing "HAWKE" who is bioware's character, perhaps they should have built up to the drama a little more rather than expecting me to care that the "red shirt" dies. So what if they label him as my "brother".

I have no experience of him as my brother. It would have been more dramatic to not experience the death in the game but have a brief but poigniant sense of mourning portrayed through a flash back cut scene later in the game. They should have simply aluded to the recent death of my brother or sister early in the game.
See, because this is not my character I don't have the same level of emotional investment. I honestly cared more about the death of Aveline's husband than of hawke's (ie: "my") brother.

Have you played a Bioware game before? From Baldur's Gate (death of foster-father early on) to Jade Empire (kidnapping of mentor early on) to, er, Origins (deaths of parents in HN origin, followed by death of Duncan), this way of encouraging emotional investment in the story is a narrative device oft used by Bioware.  Amongst other game developers/authors/screenwriters. Whether this is a somewhat overused 'hook' is another argument, but it seems a little ... odd? to criticise DA2 specifically for it. Unless you haven't played a Bio game before, that is :?

Difference being in DAO I played MY character. In this I'm playing Hawke. Big difference. My first playthrough in DAO was as a male human warrior noble, about as bland as you can get, but because I made a choice to play as this and had a pre-defined personality I had created in my mind for the character, the death of my parents had actual emotional weight. In fact, I remember commenting to my wife after the human noble origin that "this is going to be an aweseome game" and being truly stoked! I can't say the same about the first act in this game. So the red shirt dies... big deal. Not my brother.

Technically you actually played as Cousland or Amell or whatever the other Origins names were. And your background in those stories (with the possible exception of Mage which maybe offered a little more 'room' for your imagination') was as well-defined as Hawke's. Given that you can still choose gender/appearance/class/first name (I do appreciate that some people are unhappy at not being able to choose race:(), I'm not sure how Hawke is so much less your character than the child of Bryce and Eleanor Cousland and sibling of Fergus. Hawke can still have a personality that you create for him.

Anyway, apologies for straying off-topic. I'm just jealous of everyone who's played it, since my download appears to have got stuck at 0.1 GB. Marvellous.

X360 demo was ****. Plain and simple. A dumbed-down buttonsmasher that can be only described as mediocre.
As for PC, I hope it's as much better than the X360 version, like it was with the first DA:O. If it's the same as the console version, I'll just leave the game on the shelf.

I'm afraid you just might be disappointed.

I don't know all about this rpg argument, there are no true rpg games left.  Who actually "role plays" in a computer game anymore.  I think Gorians and Furries do in Second Life but I haven't seen it for a long long time...but DA2 seems like it will be a lot of fun.  It's a linear, story and dialog driven game, much like Mass Effect, much like The Witcher, much like Dead Space....all fun game with their own merits.

Oh one thing I forgot to mention with my post, I did notice some memory load issues during the demo.

Thanks for the demo bioware. You saved me 40 pounds lmao. I feared the game would be like this I should never of preordered the sig edition but no matter it's cancelled now. The music is boring the voice acting is terrible and the animations are a joke. Disco Mage hawke ftw? I will wait till you guys make da3 with morrigan and the warden returning. Thanks.

Woooow.... that was a kick in the ballz of the devs,,,

Overall I was very pleased. Sure it was a little buggy and occasionally the framerate would drop and conversations jumped a little but for now I'll pass this off as being due to the fact that this is a demo we're playing not a game.

I'm really thrilled with the new art style and even more infinitely pleased by the fact that there are seprate rigs for male and female characters. When I played through as FemHawke it really felt as though I was playing a woman and not a man with massive breasts stuck to his front, which was really nice and as odd as this may sound helped me connect to my character. 'Hey I'm a woman and I can hand darkspawn their heads on a plate.' I don't think I'm the only one either. I also thought the graphics were nicely improved on the the 360 (I've never used PC so I can't make a comparison there, not that I really want to.)
Still, on that note, I did find it odd that Lothering looked like a wasteland, it didn't bother me enough to actually offset me from the game however.

I was a little iffy on the combat at first but once I figured it out I quite like it, and I have a feeling it will continue to grow on me as I play the game. As an original Dungeons&Dragons kind of girl it really felt... animated to me, like a good session come to life. Being able to dodge attacks was wonderful and I look forwards to playing more powerful characters as poking away at monsters did get a little frustrating, which didn't surprise me. Who, if presented with the choice, would play a level one character if the could play as level ten and deal out massive amounts of damage?

Overall I thought the demo was fantastic but I'll need to play the game before I pass judgement on how good it is, although I've come to trust and love Bioware so I have no fears. This felt like a belated birthday gift as my birthday was just two days ago and only 13 more days until the game comes out! I really can't wait, and that is my opinion.

 Xbox 360 demo.
Gameplay:Was awesome. It felt more real-time than it did in DA:O (Although it feels like I no longer need to open the radical menu as much than before which I do miss) but it felt paced and quicker than the first. Each class had a different feel to it but at the same time each felt awesome in their own way.I was disappointed by the locking of Inventory as it meant that picking up items was neglected and I wanted to see the improvements to that but at the same time the core functions from DA:O remained even if it was subtle at first.
Sound:Music was definitely awesome and better than DA:O and linked in well with the upgrade to combat pace and I liked the voice work for Hawke (both female and male) and the companions included.
Graphics:I was a bit iffy on the new art-style but after playing the demo on my HD TV any doubts have been cast away the improved effects of the blood on the models were a nice touch but the detail on the armour has much improved from DA:O (and armour looked low resolution back on DA:O) The running animations are a bit....awkawrd but in the end the game HAS improved in every aspect.
I have to question some of the events at the beginning though

When one of your family dies, I felt no connection to the greifing of the mother, the lack of proper conversation back in DA:O never gave me the chance to connect with the characters and so nor to the death of said character I felt emotionally that scene was lacking

Minor things:
Some of the description on the classes are different from the female and male versions (very minor but noticeable. such as a word spelt differently and a missing comma)
The subtitles for the ending video say the rise to power begins March 8th while the video says March 11th

All in all I can't wait for the full game to come out  ^_^

Oh where do I start.. I downloaded the xbox demo earlier and did a few playthroughs in the hopes that my opinions could be changed. I'm still just as apprehensive about the game as I was before playing it.

1. Voice-over

Remember all the complaining that a lot of us have done about Hawke being voiced? Yeah, I'm still complaining. I tried both male and female Hawke and don't care for either voice. FemHawke sounds prissy to me regardless of dialogue option. I expected her to stamp her foot in impatience at any moment. MaleHawke sounds like a jerk to me regardless of dialogue option. Maybe the voices will grow on me in the full game like FemShep's did (still don't like MaleShep's but I can deal with it on the rare occasion I play using him), but as of right now I'm hoping for a quickly made 'mute Hawke' mod.

2. Combat

Thank the gods for a toggle to turn auto-attack on. Granted I tried the demo on xbox when I will be playing the full game on pc, but the demo seemed like one big button mashing exercise to me. That doesn't make me "fight like a spartan" or "think like a general", it makes my thumb sore.. :?

As far as the classes go, I tried all three and my feelings are mixed. Was knocking Darkspawn down while Hawke appeared to be scratching his chin (mage) awesome? Sure. Did it make any sense that skills were so much more powerful that one or two skills could almost wipe out a targets health while a normal hit hardly hurt them at all? Not so much. In an earlier thread someone had compared the blood level to strawberry jam. I've come to the conclusion that's an apt description. More blood doesn't bother me, but the way it's done is honestly a bit comical. If Darkspawn can live after having a river of blood gush out of them, then to hell with it. They deserve to win.

3. Warrior Animations

My first run through the ogre killed everyone but Avaline. While playing as her I couldn't help but notice that warriors don't appear to be able to do anything but stab their target unless you use a skill. So basically you removed the 'shuffle, shuffle, swing' and replaced it with 'lean in, poke, lean back, lean in, poke, lean back'. I'd rather swing and miss than poke the target with a pointy stick a hundred times.

4. Darkspawn

The redesign doesn't bother me too much as far as they are concerned, other than the way they walk/run. What they heck did they do? Watch "Planet of the Apes" after taking over Ostagar? Did they have movie night to relax after the strenuous task of fighting off those pesky humans? When they came running out like apes I was first shocked and then amused. I can't take them seriously as a threat when they're bouncing around with their knuckles almost dragging the ground. I kept waiting for one of them to fling poo... :pinched: I'd watched some of the videos before of course, but I just never noticed their ape-like movements until it was on my tv screen. It's distracting is what it is.

5. Flemeth

Who is her plastic surgeon? I might need their number in about 30 years so I can go from looking like a 50-60 year old to looking like a 30 year old. :D It's not that I don't like her new look, I do, it's just that it's odd having her voice come out of a woman who looks no older than 35 if you ignore the hair color. I'll get used to it, I'm sure, it's just odd.

6. Momma Hawke

I kept waiting for her to tell me to get the dog out of the kitchen before Nan quit... Momma Cousland's role may have been tiny, but I'm not certain that casting her voice actor in a similar role for the sequel was the best choice. Not that I don't like her voice, quite the opposite in fact, it's just disconcerting. Especially when she (the character) is upset and says "Noooo!"

Now for a few good things.

I like the overall art direction of the game. I'm not really seeing how it's supposed to be so much different than DA:O (other than the Darkspawn and Flemeth), but I like it. What little of the story we got to see was good, as expected, and I want to see the rest of it now. After playing all three classes, they do seem a bit more balanced now. I wasn't left feeling handicapped while playing one class and overpowered with another once skills were taken into account. Also, being able to move out of the way is a vast improvement from the arrows that follow you around everything and the sword hits from 10 feet away.

Overall, it's not quite as horrible as I feared it would turn out but I'm still apprehensive about it. The demo didn't give us enough to be able to figure out if all the changes were truly for the better or if they just turned this into a completely different game that has little in common with it's predecessor. I certainly didn't hate it, and there were some good points to it. I just wish more of my concerns had been put to rest, and sadly they weren't.

I really enjoyed it, and have nothing to complain about. The graphic look good - particularly the buildings in High Town. The combat felt fun and more fluid, and the difficultly was just right for me. The cooldown on healing seems a little excessive, but I didn't have any problems so I suppose it might be fitting.

The mage's 'out of range' animation is a little long, which is my only annoyance, but I imagine I'll get used to adjusting the range of my spells.

But I'm even more excited now!

Demo was amazing. Everything I hoped it would be and more. Just played it for the 360 and now currenlty downloading it for the PC. This is gonna be one of the best games this year, if not THE best. Mass Effect 3, I think, will be the only one that will top it.

That's due to the sustained ability she has on. If you deactivate it or play as a s & s Hawke, they swing the sword around much like they did in Origins.

Tried it for the 360 while my PC was downloading the demo and all i can say is WOW!!! So much more responsive then the 1st one was on the 360 and much faster. Combat was fluid and the AOE circles were a nice tocuh, they seem to stick out more then origins.Graphics looked nicer then i thought they would on the 360 version as well.

The game consistently crashes for me after I've finished the exaggerated part of the game and hit 'Start Game' in the character creation screen. I'm on the PC, playing on a laptop that quite comfortably matches the reccomended specs for Dragon Age II.

You probably need to re-download it then, it sounds like the demo didn't quite download properly to your laptop.

It happens.

By and large, I enjoyed it. The combat is quick and fun. I think I'll be ok with the dialog wheel. Just playing an archer now. Enjoying it mostly, but I see in addition to firing without bowstrings we're also firing without arrows. I know arrows are unlimited, but having the quiver on my back really did add to it aesthetically. Why remove it?

Bioware what can I say without it sounding like a rant?

I'll begin with the visuals, they are a bit lack lusture when zoomed in during cutscenes clothing looks low to medium rez textures, things dissapear through objects i.e. sword goes through clothing sometimes. Character modelling is also a bit poor when zoomed in.

Environments look rather dull as well even though you guys have taken a new direction on the visuals itself it just feels rather empty and not well created as all looks rather flat.

The other thing about the visuals is that the clothing such as plated armour or any metal type of armour found on the characters looks like cloth whereas in the first game it looked more like metal.

Potion wise I don't like the fact that you have to wait to drink another health potion as in the demo you are taking heavy damage and then have to run around a bit and wait for the potion to charge up again.

I prefered the system in the first game where you could bring up the potions and abilities seperatly by holding the left or right triggers.

Lastly although this may be 'fun' for some I am not liking the 'Ninja' ability of flying across the screen to another enemy once I have downed one.

Overall it seems that you guys at Bioware are constantly looking at ways to degrade the 'RPG' experience I found this to be the case in Mass Effect 2 which although was very good it seriously lacked the RPG element that was found in the first game.

Overall to me Dragon Age was and still is an amazing game, the whole world felt right along with the combat system and the length.

It seems that Dragon Age 2 is watered down and not only has lost that RPG appeal but the visuals as well have been watered down.

Overall I was expecting a much bigger and better experience both gameplay and visuals wise in Dragon Age 2, it seems that for this generation no effort is being made to better previous games but to go either backwards or to make only little improvements.

I guess it is too late to make any major alterations but I am hoping for Dragon Age 3 vast improvements are made to both the visuals and gameplay along with improved AI and something a little different at the same time

Ok, I played on the XBox 360.

For the most part, it looks good. There have been obvious improvements, but the menu, inventory, and level up screens seem to be more stepping backwards. The original inventory and interface was actually well done. It was all there, without being over-bearing. It seems over simplified.
