Might be better if I stayed locked-on to the enemy I'm trying to attack but there was no button for doing it manually

Push your left thumbstick in. It'll lock target or unlock if you have one locked. Same on PS3.

Aha! Thank you.

...Please don't tell me this was an option for DA:O and that I just never knew it.

My biggest complaint was having to repeatedly mash A to do basic attacks. Is this a toggle?

I briefly noticed bows do a lot of damage. Not a complaint, but interesting to note.

   * framed narrative with Cass and Varric is awesome, can't wait for more

* the combat was a bit too fast paced and frenzied at times although, at the same time, quite alot more exciting than in Origins.

*  it's refreshing to finally be able to enjoy archery so early in the game and so nifty to have that quick switch to melee combat for close up enemies

*  enjoyed the mage staff being used for close up melee if necessary

*  the death of either Bethany or Carver scene was uninspiring and I thought it lacked the usual care/attention by Bioware that it seemingly deserved. The Cousland PC showed more emotion in Origins when losing family members.

* Flemeth's scene was superb - she looks and sounds incredible in DA2

* I don't mind the dialogue wheel, although it was quite laggylicious at times

* tactics screen was a pain to set although that is probably a matter of getting used to the new layout

* although the combat talent trees look awesome, I found them hard to set as well as it wouldn't let me select what I thought was available....something to get used to again or the demo was lagging...

*found it difficult to level up party companions at times, clicking on their avatar did not work, so had to go to their tactics screen in order to reach their attributes and combat talent spec pages...

* I don't like the position of the health/mana/stamina status bars - it feels unnatural to look at the bottom left hand of the screen while playing so it felt very strange to do so, but I guess  that's something else to get used to as well

* the armor textures of the enemies in the final demo fight (in the Chantry with Isabela) looked incredibly bad...

All in all, I look forward to the complete game and enjoyed this sneak peak demo :wizard: thanks Bioware!

Just got done with the demo as a male warrior. Combat is freakin' awesome, holy crap. It loses nothing in tactical quality, but is much more responsive and intense, and basically just all around more awesome. The characters look great, the voices are great, and frankly I don't see how anybody can be disappointed with the graphics, especially compared to DAO. I mean jeezus, look at this.

The game looks and feels awesome. Great test drive, can't wait to take 'er home!

I'm ready to start bringin' down the Chantry! >:D

I thought it was great. I'd seen all of it on youtube already, but it was another thing playing it myself. I'm preferential towards mages, and I like what I've seen so far. I was (slightly) worried that mages might have been left a bit behind with all the warrior and rogue revamping, but both Bethany and myself felt powerful right out of the gates (after the 'real' story began...). Beyond that I'm now a big fan of the new skill trees. It seems like a huge improvement over the original game (which I loved - something doesn't have to be broken to be improved upon...)

As far as warriors go, both Aveline and Carver seemed very strong in their respective roles. I like that on one hand that skill crossover is still possible, but on the other that a 2h warrior not only feels completely different from a sword and board warrior, but that it seems powerful and useful.

Tactically speaking, it was still dragon age. I paused and issued orders as I did in the original game, had characters working their roles - i.e. me dishing out punishment, aveline tanking and carver working as an aoe weed-whacker. It clearly hasn't been stripped down to console-style easy mode speed combat (although obviously it was easy, since we're locked on normal...)

All in all, what I saw made me think of the change from Mass Effect to Mass Effect 2. I loved the original, was afraid the sequel couldn't match, and ended up being blown away. I love what I've played so far. The combat was terrific, was still very much Dragon Age, but I thought a good deal more fun than origins. The spoken dialogue to me was a welcome change, it feels more immersive than reading text.

The only things that left me wondering were storytelling choices, and things I knew about coming in. Having your sibling die before you really get to know them really I think inhibits the impact of their death. Sort of a "sayonara, I hardly knew ya". Ditto for Aveline's beau.

But those are minor piques since I've only seen the bare beginning of the story. I'm sure there's ample emotional impact to come.

So to BioWare, I guess I'd say so far so good.

Not that I'd really had any doubt.

I keep seeing one issue pop up concerning 'Friendly Fire'...

By default, the "normal' level of difficulty does not enforce friendly fire, that is limited to 'Nightmare' difficulty, I believe.

I will admit, I'm going to sound a bit fanboyish but I need to take a cold shower after finishing the PC Demo.  It was everything I hoped for and more!  Had similar feel to the PC version but different enough to mix it up.  Downright superfun!  Can't wait!

OK... I don't see this being addressed in any of the official responses, so here goes:

This demo is a VERY heavily edited version of the start of the game, with lots of content missing... right?

I mean, that's why everything is so abrupt, there is no backstory, the actions jumps awkwardly forward, some of the dialogue comes across as if things were missing, and the level progression is so incredibly fast - yes?

Maybe I totally missed it and this was made clear, but if not - it's kind of a weird way to demo a Bioware RPG. I get that it was probably intended to get people excited about the "New, vastly improved... but still sort of the same, really, would we lie?" combat, but as a demo for an RPG... it kind of falls flat.

On the plus side, the combat is better, though still way too slow for my taste - the enemies don't die as slowly as in DAO, but there's still a lot of wood-chopping goodness in there. Easy difficulty, here I come, I guess...

Also, if the conversation with Flemeth is a taste of what the storytelling and dialogue will deliver when it's not so butchered, then things are looking pretty good.

You skip ahead plenty of time in the story when you help Isabela. Who knows what could have gone on during that? They had to keep it linear to make it simple and accessable to everyone.

Here are my impressions of the PC demo.

Liked:

-Faster pace of combat

-Nicer graphics

-Greatly improved animations (both in combat and cutscenes)

-Hawke's voice (greatly helps liven-up the cutscenes)

Disliked:

-New camera (much more constrained and harder to manipulate)

-Loading pauses with some custscenes (not sure if that's just me)

-Issues with tactics menu (I couldn't figure out how to select potions in tactics, and my mouse was having difficulty selecting some of the buttons)

-Wonky AI behaviour (ex Bethany sending a fireball spell that misses almost all the enemies, Hawke using Mind Blast when there are no enemies around him/her, Carver being unable to use quick health again after using it once already in the same fight)

Demo verdict: Looks very promising. Most of the grips I mentioned can/are probably be fixed in the final version of the game, and the second time I played the demo the camera changes were less annoying, so I'm hopeful I can get used to it. Can't wait to play the game in two weeks.

If SW:TOR was like this, man o man. It would take the CAKE for MMO's. That said, the combat was responsive, exciting..and very fast paced...Switching toons and setting up actions was amazing. Makes me want to play DA:O again.

Eh, has it been explained in this thread or anywhere else, what all the dialog icons mean? Some are obvious (like the sarcastic mask), but there was a diamond that left me wondering for instance...

PC Demo:

Nothing good about this demo. Honestly, I can't believe I pre-ordered this garbage. The art style is cartoony and the animations are repetitive and too over the top (I felt like I was watching bad anime). Oh and all the women have HUGE breasts.... not all women have DD cup size.
Seriously stop catering to the casual xbox player.

them releasing the demo is like slaping you in the face.. and then taking your lunch money.. and laughing about it.
i feel sorry for any of the pc gamers who pre ordered this mess

What a poigant allegory! Why yes, it's exactly like being physically robbed, struck and bellittled! Yours and others dissatisfaction aside surely there is a point where these silly melodramatic statements could be thought about a little before posted?

Reading this thread makes me think "You know what they SHOULD cater more to the casual X-Box crowd". Perhaps then they can avoid scarcely informed histrionics by cynical people who gather a feeling of intellectual superiority from video games they percieve as more complex becuase it involves simple math and the ability to read. Not have the work they have poured their hearts into, facetiously degraded based the tiniest shreds of information and completely dismissed as 'rubbish'.

Also, just because I am a console player doesn't mean I'm not smart enough to resent being generalised as a drooling idiot.

I wasn't one hundred percent satisfied with the demo, I saw no "synch kills" which was disappointing and slightly concerning, and the combat can feel a little tiring. Still that is the case with many games in the early stages when before you get used to the systems and your character develops enough variety of abilites to deaql with certain situations.

The voice acting on the whole seemed a bit hollow during the demo (with the exception of Mulgrew who is still exceptional) and while the skill tree's have been re-arranged, they still seem to force you down a very specific path.

Nonetheless, I will play the game Bioware has delivered for the most part some of the best entertainment in the industry and continues to strive to achieve emotional and exciting games. Perhaps if they do start catering to a more casual crowd they might at least get a little respect for the effort they do put in.

Just wanted to note that everyone's entitled to their opinion, whether positive or negative. Having said that, personal attacks, platform wars and off-topic discussions are not something for this thread.

Thanks for the feedback, everyone, and keep it coming.

I've played it once through as a female mage, since that's what I had planned to play first.  PC version

Good:
- Eee, I love the mage animations!  Feels like the battle mage I always wanted with arcane warrior.  Excellent work.  Definitely playing a mage my first run.

- Not easy, at least in parts.  My mage was pulling a lot of aggro spitting fire at everyone, and the long cooldown on Heal will be a challenge.  In the ogre battle I only got to Heal once.  Everyone went down the first time.  Had to reload and be more liberal with the fireballs.  Gonna go with everyone having a mystical heat shield.  Yeah, that's it.

Eh:
- There was some stutter on commands- maybe I was just doing something wrong, but I'd tell a follower to take a potion and it would come up next to their name but they wouldn't take it.  Or I'd set up an attack but my PC wouldn't do it.  Not sure what was going on there but I had uncomfortable reminders of Golems of Amgarrak when my followers wouldn't do what they were supposed to be doing.

All in all, good fun.  Going to do a rogue archer next.

PS3 Demo

I love the new combat!  I played as a mage.  I like that you actually have to think and strategize.  Graphics look great and the voice acting and music is awesome.

Thanks for the sneak peek!  Can't wait to get the full version.:wizard:

Just finished a mage playthrough of the demo

I liked the intro and the story telling. I think having varric telling the story is going to be interesting. I liked the dialogue wheel and meeting Flemeth was a lot of fun. Despite the new look, she has the same personality.

The combat seemed really quick at first, but I used pause a lot to better gain control of what was going on.

THe only thing I didn't like was trouble with the setting up tactic on the pc. I had the same problems as other have voiced: difficulty in highlighting the options. Also I could not see an option to set up tactic for drinking potions when low on health. Perhaps, I missed it or its something that will be available in the main game. Also, I miss the overhead camera.

Otherwise, its a great demo and thanks so much for letting us have a glimpse of DA2. Now off to try a warrior and rogue:)

??
It seemed to me that each tree had approximately the same number of talents that DAO had, in many cases more, and the order you pick them up in is not completely linear.

I went with extremely low expectations especially after reading all the negativity on the board.

And what I got was a fun experience that entertained me for a hour. Was it perfect? No. I miss the tactical camera and feel slightly trolled by Bioware's promise of 'hot graphics'

That said, the facial animation was amazing and that's coming from a guy that thinks ME2's facial expression were dull. O_o Graphically, it's definitely not super hot but it's serviceable and runs well. That gets an B+ on my list.

The combat was fun. The second fight against the ogre was intense and I loved it. In all honesty, fans have been given a choice. You can play EITHER like an action rpg or as a more tactical rpg. Giving the extra option in the game does not equate stripping down the tactical experience.

This leads my to my biggest gripe. Where's the option for a tactical camera? I don't understand why that will be stripped out when it was a signature feature in the original. Pity... Otherwise, this demo would have been perfect.

Longtime Bioware player since KoToR.

Eh. Gonna be frank here not going to buy this game. Could go on a diatribe why I didn't like it, but it seems rather futile and childish at this point.

Really disappointed with the recent direction of your company (ME2 and this). But I guess I'm just part of your target audience anymore. Ohwells. Witcher 2s coming out in May and I honestly don't even have that much time to game anyway.

(The Problem isn't the combat mechanics btw....thats the least important part of any RPG tbh...its you guys overfocusing on combat and oversimplifying dialogue and plot. Which an especially odd decision because its not like you guys made an awesome action game with genuinely fun combat. And no mod tools wtf.)

I just finished up playing all 3 classes on both PC and PS3, here are my thoughts...

I know its a demo, so I wont give it too much grief here, but the PS3 version in between scenes was a bit choppy and it hiccup'd a few times. I'm sure this is resolved in the retail version (ME2 demo was also bad in this way, but was fine for retail).

After playing on both platforms...I think i'll be getting the PS3 version to be honest. It felt so much easier to move around, use my skills, support the other members, and all around navigate the games mechanics vs the PC. This is not to say it made the game much easier or anything, I still almost lost a fight here and there on the various class run throughs, but the PS3 version certainly enabled me to avoid stumbling over myself with the combat mechanics. PC version felt a little clunky to me. To be fair, it could have just been that the control scheme is pretty different than most games I play, so I may just not have adapted well. My wife will prefer me to play it on PS3 so she can watch easier though, so I'm very pleased that the PS3 version works to near perfection for me.

To be perfectly honest, I really did not like DA:O at all. I managed to force my way through hoping it would get better as I went, but it just fell short for me in almost every way. It's really good to see that BioWare has pulled a 180 and created a rather compelling and entertaining game that felt frantic, strategic, action packed, and loaded with re-playability.

-Mike

This may be the first game I buy in a long time instead of rent through GameFly.

I have to say I enjoyed the demo, it left me wondering what the witch of the wild will be like in one of my imports. I know the hero n dragon age 2 will meet up with her late has wellr, get the feeling that amulet is what safe guards her life.

Who does the voice for the witch of the wild in both games, could have sworn I know that voice but not sure from where besides the two games..
