Anyone notice how much Flemeth resembles Katie Mulgrew now? Hehe

I played the rogue first on the PC demo.

I'll discuss more later maybe after trying another class.

I do agree with many, the new camera is just horrible. Bioware doesn't owe us any answers, but I'd like to know why an existing part of the game engine that no one complained about(or had to use anyway), was removed from the game.

It isn't a game killer, but it will be annoying, I will be reminded of its removal during most combats. I'm baffled at its removal, and even more baffled that a Bioware dev said that the camera can be pulled back "plenty far", just not as far as in DA:O. This is bad, and gives you so little view of the combat, that I feel almost blind if not constantly moving from character to character during combat(not to give orders, just see what the hell is happening).

I pray this is the first mod made, if it is possible to do anything about it.

BioWare

Why did you "dumb" down the game in every way?

???  I really don't see where it has been "dumbed down".
I see a game with a character improvement system that is more flexible and with more depth, and combat that is 500% more responsive, faster, and more exciting, without any real change to the tactics involved.

totally awesome!  I really felt drawn into the story.  The combat was very fast paced and the effects were gloriously bloody.  You have outdone yourself Bioware!  I cannot wait till release date!

Played it for the PC.

As far as difficulty I'd say the mark is pretty well set for normal from what I've seen, although I would of liked if it still had friendly fire.

Don't really understand the whole "dumbed" down complaints for combat, you could roflstomp your way through Origins as any class with a decent build on Nightmare difficulty... solo if you could manage health and had a little patience.

But the animations are a bit over the top, nothing that makes me irritated, just makes me wonder why Hawke must be so extreme in his/her killing.

I find the new combat approach as enjoyable as Origins for different reasons, Origins was more of a walking pace with plenty of tactical options available at your disposal (although they could be ignored if you wanted) whereas DA2 is at a running pace, but still retains a good amount of the tactical effort to make me pause after killing each enemy to choose which next one/set is most vulnerable to what attack.

Probably my biggest issues are female running animation and the landscape design. Running animation has a broken spine and (albeit only from two areas) the terrain and background seem inferior to that of Origins to me.

The new dialogue I don't care for, but it doesn't really bother me (although that may change with the full game one way or another)

Overall, looking to enjoy the game thoroughly on launch day.

I really enjoyed the combat.

I felt powerful in regards to hitting things, but I didn't feel like a super heroin. I played all three classes, and the warrior and rogue felt SO MUCH BETTER in strength compared to the mage. They looked a lot better in combat like they had actually been in combat before.
I felt that the comments that Hawke made right when his/her brother/sister died were...well more then uncaring. My character didn't sound sad or depressed or anything. No emotional attachment. You could really hear Bethanys sadness when Carv died.
The graphics were better in most places, but some of the ground/walls/mage armor in Kirkwall for hawk were very VERY low res. Can't wait to see Dx11 though and Very High.

I would have loved to use the inventory system and have character creation up so you could save if you wished.

Oh, and if people are complaining about things in the demo (Helping Isa and having the dwarf in your party), good lord, learn to read.

I keep seeing one issue pop up concerning 'Friendly Fire'...

By default, the "normal' level of difficulty does not enforce friendly fire, that is limited to 'Nightmare' difficulty, I believe.

Please tell me Bioware is going to change this and have friendly fire activated on Normal difficulty and beyond before the game is out? Leave it off on Easy difficulty for newbies. Otherwise the main tactic for players is going to be, have their tank draw the enemies then spam with AOE spells and abilities. Rinse and repeat, fight over.

Just played through the PC demo, and while I did enjoy it overall, it feels like there were some basic flaws that could have easily been fixed. Let me know if there are in-game options for these or if I was just doing something wrong...

- Looting seems to require that you click on the loot pile, approach it, and then click on it again once your character is blocking 75% of the hitbox. This got old pretty fast.

- When clicking on character portraits to select a teammate in battle, if they have the "Level Up" arrow, I often times am brought into the ability menu for whoever is the currently selected teammate. This is just strange; at the least it should go to the ability menu for whoever's profile picture was clicked.

- Holding down the shift key to see area markers.. a lot of the time the markers would flicker or sometimes not show when they should.

- When moving around the targeting circle for spells, if you get to a part where the circle can't go it just freezes. This feels pretty awkward and should just have the circle turn a red color or something.

- Not having numbers next to the dialogue options means I pretty much have to use my mouse to go around the dialogue wheel. :/ I suppose the numbers would ruin their super simple approach.

- The ability upgrade menu has menu diving; having to press "Back" to see other trees gets tiring. I know it's nitpicky, for but how many times I'm going to be looking at what skills do what, I'm going to have to be navigating back and forth a lot.

- I can't tell if the game is auto-attack or not; sometimes my character keeps attacking, and other time I have to keep clicking. Grrrr.

- The potion interface element (the heart on the right), doesn't seem to account for cooldowns, or show them. So, I realize this as I need a potion and get no visual or audio feedback, and have no idea why my queued up ability is Potion of Healing, but my character keeps switching over to attack.

I was dissappointed, and glad I did not pre order such a game as this, when I found out the demo was released I jumped on my 360 to get it, and what  I got was some hack and slash game that beared the name of a game I cherished, I even hoped that when that first cutscene of fighting was over, that it was a cruel joke and you were going to go back to the nice view and combat I found in DA:O but no you insisted on this new "dynamic" combat system, which is a hack and slash system but instead of me pushhing X Y X up down left to do some cool move, I now just press A untill my finger is tired and then press either x y or b for a special move or get this, HOLD RT FOR AN ENTIRE NEW LIST OF MOVES, nice to know at least in this hack and slash game I will no longer have to memorize the long list of combos.

I decided to play as a warrior, and so dissappointed that I do not think I will go back and play again, I seriously let my party members died and then killed everything using hit and run tactics, I run in hit run out and repeat killed everything even the damn orge doing that,
combat 2/10
just because you made hack and slash easier to play now that I dont got to remember pointless and long combos

Graphics seemed unimpressive even for a demo
6/10
Story also seemed eh, SO here I am hero WOO KIll orge wait that not what happens so here I am slightly less coolish hero, kill waves of things die die die OH wait a new person well this would be fun oh wait, you hate mages how nice ok , die die die, oh noes orge, die die die , oh no brother, oh well, at this point I was crying and quit the demo
6/10 just because I hoping the lore and stuff that draws me to the game will not be mangled
I walked away with hope and left in tears, this was just pathetic, I was more let down then when i realized Mass effect 2 didn't offer the customization as in ME1, seriously no grenade launcher sniper rifle shame.
I think my money is better spent on something like ff14, it seems to be going better, or that new kick ass elder scroll game.

Unplayable for me.  On PC the graphic studder so much I can't really do anything on any graphics setting.  I have a PC that can  pretty much max everything in 1920x1080 Res. Without problems in all my games.

Hopefully when this game comes out it will be less of a problem... :(  Dunno if I want to preorder it if I can't play.

I had the same problems as well, but the devs have stated that the final build does not have this problem.  Hopefully that is true for me because it was really quite jarring

I had this problem as well, quick trip to nvidia.com to update my drivers fixed the problem neatly. running flawlessly on high settings with 8xAA.

Played the PC version as a male warrior and a female rogue, twice each. A few niggles with the demo itself (tactics screen not working properly if you try to select custom settings being particularly annoying), but then it is just a demo.

Quite a change stylistically from DA:O, but I really enjoyed it once I'd adjusted to the faster combat and graphics changes. I didn't think the combat gameplay was that different from DA:O, just a bit faster and flashier, and the ability trees look like they'll give you plenty of tactical options to explore. Really like the cross-class combos, only problem for me was that I had a bit of trouble handling my rogue character in combat and ended up letting her run on "automatic pilot" while I operated Bethany. Probably because I mainly play warriors, I'm sure I'll get used to it. Not sold on the new camera, it needs to zoom out more or detach IMO, but to be fair I was much better at judging AOE attacks as I went on. Not a deal-breaker by any means.

I thought the graphics were a step up from DA:O, don't mind the slightly "graphic novel" look one bit (on high using DX11, SSAO turned off as it was corrupting the ground and killing the frame rate on my system. Known problem with the demo it seems.). Skin, hair and weapon textures are particularly improved IMO.

Quite impressed with the dialogue and VO work we heard, both PC voices are perfectly fine as far as I'm concerned and the supporting cast present in the demo were all pretty good. Very impressed with Kate Mulgrew's Flemeth BTW, even better than her take on her in DA:O.

All in all, pretty damned good. Looking forward to the full game even more now.

Finished playing 360 again, and wanted to share my more in depth opinion this time.

Graphics:

Overall - *drool* Enough said.

Style - I love the new slightly stylized look to the characters, and I think the models are top notch. From the few characters shown I like that they are a bit more detailed than Origins and feel a little more unique. Can't say much more than how incredibly drool worthy everything is. The large bosoms seem slightly gratuitous but, to each their own.

Performance - I had no problems at all, in any of my numerous playthroughs, no glitches, bugs, or slow downs. Everything was perfect in my opinion.

FX - Pretty good, I love some of the new spell effects, everyone exploding in blood was kind of funny and...odd. Also noticed when slashing a human enemy enough it pretty much just looked like they turned into molten rock for whatever reason. Still, very very pretty.

Animation - So awesome, this kind of product is the reason I became an animator. There was some weirdness, like the walks in some spots, and this weird fail that an archer would do if they were out of range and you pressed A. Very fluid though, very immersive with the facial acting too, I thought it looked like an improvement from Origins.

Audio:

Voice acting - I love it, especially Kate Mulgrew as Flemeth, comes across beautifully. Having Hawke speak is different, and not a bad thing, which also partly explains the implementation of the ME conversation wheel mechanic. The acting feels real, and believable, as you always manage to do.

Music - Epic as always, not much to say there.

FX - Very engaging, makes for a fun experience, although the sword slash sound did get a bit grating after hearing it so much.

Gameplay:

Controls - I'm glad much of it was kept the same as in Origins, made for an easy transition, and the improvements feel seemless. Being given the option of actively attacking, even through button mashing, is a wonderful addition for me.

Experience - Very engaging, and so very fun, well worth the wait I say. It all flows very nicely together and I must say that I enjoy the combat much more than Origins. The 'waddling' up to an enemy while in combat mode in Origins, or shuffling about to get to in position, will not be missed.

Interface - A little dark, but I can get used to that. I very much like how the attributes now display what they result in right there beside them, comes in handy. Having a separate 'quick potions' for the mana/stamina was something I like too. Looks clean, and I'm glad those rings around the party members are gone, adds to immersion. I rather liked the spell icons in origins more but some of the new ones are cool.

Just a few personal notes: Making Flemeth hot and sultry, meh. I rather liked her as the crazy old lady in the forest. Bethany dying if you play as a mage, sucks, but I understand the design behind it. Why the large bosoms? I guess I just like them smaller. Party AI was kind of lacking, I know its a demo, but it would have been nice if they actually used their skills.

The final word: Wicked! Thank you so much for your hard work on this, I look forward to the 8th with bated breath.

Demo done on the PC

Pro's

-Mage was definately cooler this time around with battle animations, rogue was fun I loved the acrobatics in it.

-Voice acting is good

-Graphics are decent

-Thought I would hate the wheel o' choices for chatting, but I actually liked it.

Con's

-Playing a healer is horrible to target you click on portrait and it directs you to the character screen I am sure there is a different way to do so but that was knee jerk reaction as in most of the other games.

-Auto attack is not there I am not a fan of button mashing but its something to get used to.

-Not sure if it was me or the demo, but every time the game needed to load there was a pause before hand, in the first fight with the ogre my game was paused and loaded into the story cutscene before the ogre died.

-Female Hawk walks really akward when she is not running with weapons.

-The animations of some of the characters are more cartoonish than others hopefully that is just because its a demo.

not really pro or con:

-In the scene with Isabela at the end of the demo she made a move on my female hawk which was kinda akward too almost like the demo was made for the male hawk, and I noticed in the last few parts of the ending the narrator reffered to my toon as "him" lol

PC demo

Likes:
-Combat pacing is great. Feels fast and explosive.
-Combat animations are awesome.
-The spells effects look superb.
-Story looks promising.

Dislikes:
-Graphics look good on Direct x11 but some of the textures look bland compared to the high level of detail DA:O had even on high setting.
-Voice acting is Iffy compared to Origins but Ive heard worse.
-UI is terrible looking and unorganized, this is one of the things I disliked most.

Overall I liked what I played I just hope there is time and room for Improvement even if the game gets pushed back a couple of months more.

Honestly I felt ill after playing the demo. I don't think I've ever had my expectations crushed as brutally as they were by this demo. I'm a huge fan of almost everything bioware has made - I'm not the guy who normally complains about console ports but damned if the pc version doesn't feel like one.

The lack of an overhead view is a game killer for me, either make this a pseudo fps like mass effect or make it a rpg like dragon age. Last time I felt this way was when I saw the final Indiana Jones - simply crushing.

This has a cheesy arcade feel to it and the graphics are....crappy....I might just be spoiled by the awesome mods and morphs I have for DAO. I really hope the cheesy button mashing gameplay is a symptom of this being a cross platform demo. The game play was smooth but I still get a feeling I should be feeding my PC with quarters.

I really enjoyed the dragon age 2 demo, combat was alot better than in the first and I really like the new art direction. It was kind of bs how one of your siblings died based on what class you picked (played as mage first) but other than that I enjoy everything about the game. Although the very simple, morally defined, dialogue wheel is somewhat disappointing compared to the dialogue tree in origins.

I'm sure this has all been said before, but I'm not reading through 70+ pages...
Just played as LadyHawke Rogue on the PC.

The graphics themselves are great.  I feel like the character designs/details have surpassed even those in DAO and I was pretty impressed when that originally came out.  I really like Flemeth.  Not sure how Isabella became a different ethnicity and her breasts grew 3 sizes since the Warden met her in The Pearl, but it's a decent enough redesign (if you're into fanservice).  Only exception would be the Hurlock redesign.  I liked them better when it looked like their flesh was just falling off, rather then this new skeletal thing they're going for.

As much as I like the improved designs, I hate the new animations.  HATE!  I feel like I'm about to have a seizure at any minute.  It's TOO fast and TOO exaggerated.  I can't keep up with or appreciate what I'm sure would be some pretty cool abilities if they were just slowed down to a speed that is actually humanly possible.  I still don't know why people thought the combat in Origins was too slow.  I thought that was much more realistic.  And speaking of slow, while exploring could Hawke possibly run any slower and any more like a sissy?  It's like she's just out for her morning jog around the neighborhood rather than fleeing for her life.  If anything needed to be faster that would be it!  I actually had to check to make sure I hadn't toggled to Walk.

As far as actual mechanics go, why doesn't Hawke auto-select the next closest target when the current target dies?  And is there a way to turn on the feature that displays everyone's health above their head when you hold TAB, instead of only the target you're fighting or hoving your mouse over?  That's how I pick my next target and it will get very annoying if I have to pause everytime I kill something so I can stop and manually check out everyone on the battlefield (esp. since I often found it hard to distinguish my companions from enemies just by sight).  I also think they need to bring back the top-down strategy camera.  I don't like not being able to pan over the battlefield esp. when my companions get spread out.

Although I do like that the attribute screen translates your stats into percentages that actually tell you how your PC's performance is affected, I'm not sold on the level up system yet.  I'd prefer if I could get info on everything across all the different trees without zooming into them.  At the moment it seems more complicated than is necessary.  And I don't really like the new icon designs.  The ones in DAO seemed more intuitive, but maybe that's just because I'm not familiar with the new abilities yet.  As far as the UI goes, I'm not a fan.  Hopefully someone will be able to mod it to be more similar to the DAO version.  Same goes for the codex/journal screens.  I find them harder to read.  I think DAO's was cleaner and brighter/higher contrast.  Over all the UI reads more Sci-Fi than High/Dark Fantasy to me.

Judging from the brief sample, the framed narrative format is pretty cool.  I also liked that starting out as Varric's exaggerated version of Hawke gives you an idea of the different abilities available.  I'm still undecided on the voiced PC.  The voice actor is alright, if a bit bland in her deliver at times, but I don't like not knowing exactly what she's going to say.  I'm too much of a control freak for that.  Also it feels less like my own custom character and more cookie-cutter video game hero.  Couple that with not being able to choose elf or dwarf and I think the replayability decreases quite a bit, at least for me (esp. since I prefer elves).

So overall, I'm sure it will be a decent game, and I obviously can't comment on the story itself, but judging by game play mechanics alone, I'm not expecting it to top DAO.

So far the demo to me looks very good, although there's one thing I could have use during the demo and couldn't find it.

In the tactics, I like setting the characters health <75 to take a health potion automatically as it was in origins to take a lesser health potion, however, I couldn't find the health potions in the menu to set them.

Will it continue in the game or just because of the Demo?

I agree with this.
I like the dialogue system -- they pretty much HAVE to paraphrase because the cinematic dialogue is far too long to display.  Furthermore, the "mood ring" is very helpful, because I often found that the DAO characters reacted to my lines in ways that indicate that they were not said in the way that I thought they were meant.  It breaks immersion much more, IMO, to have the attitude of a response be completely wrong as opposed to the words simply not being exactly the same as written on screen.  Not as if there were any words in DAO anyway -- one-voiced conversations are also pretty odd.

In any case, I am a fan of the dialogue ring.

I really feel like it does. Even if I would try to ignore it, I know that the top is the nice guy, the middle is the weird one, and in the low is for the cool evil badass characters. And than "my" character is even saying something completely else? I'm not playing myself, I'm just there thumbs up or down giving instructions to someone else playing. Yes, for me this takes away a big piece of immersion.

Just curious, but did you actually select any of the red options that you're calling evil?  Genuine interest, not an attack. :)

Because my general observation from selecting the 'red' options wasn't that they were evil.  They're aggressive and defensive, most often in a positive way.

Example, if you play as a rogue or warrior, you have an option to defend your sister against Wesley's hostilities if you select the red dialogue branch.  I believe Hawke says something along the lines of, "Just so you know, I stand with Bethany, Templar."

This hardly seemslike an 'evil' dialogue choice to me.

Again, when Flemeth shows up, if you select the read dialogue branch, Hawke doesn't threaten to kill Flemeth dead, he tells her to back off because he will not have her harm the group.

Just saying. xD

This. I don't get what the fuss is about on this whole "it's no longer tactical or strategic" either.

News Flash: DAO was never strategic or tactical. If you can go from start to finish of the game, on Nightmare difficulty, doing nothing but mercilessly slaughtering your foes while your Tank draws aggro, thus removing any and all need to think and adapt to new situations, then something is very, very wrong.

Distilled wrote...

Yeah, I have to agree with this too. The animations of DA:O were nice, but I always felt were way too slow (unless your party had Haste cast on them). Every one swung their weapons with such calm, I always felt that, if I myself were to enter the game, I could defeat every single member of my party by just calmly dodging out of the way of their strokes and then slap them in the face until they fell down.

But this is just ridiculous! We went from a realistic-looking (albeit incredibly slow) fighting style to freaking anime-styled backflips and inhumanly fast attacks. Don't get me wrong, I love anime, but this isn't really the sort of place I would like to see its influences.
