This is simply a bare bones review of a few things that jumped out at me after my first playthrough as a Rogue Lady Hawke.

- The combat looks and feels wonderful, it's so fluid and fast paced. Just let me say thank the Maker my Spacebar is still functional. Seriously, my rogue is behaving like a master of the craft (that she ought to be ;)), so fluid in her movements and it's pretty amazing to see her use her dexterity to its full advantage. Man, I love watching those backstabs!

- One hiccup during combat I experienced was the health potion not actually being used when my Lady Hawke's health was dangerously low, despite me clicking the button three separate times. By the fourth time she finally conceded and drank the darn thing... one more second and she would have been eating dirt.  Was that due to some invisible reuse timer on the HP potion? If so, then perhaps a clearer way of letting the player know that the HP potion is not available yet would be fabulous (like a faded out heart in the botton right) - but since it wasn't faded out (like with my abilities reheating after being used) I gathered I could hit the button and my characted would drink the potion. Good thing I realized her HP wasn't replenished.

- The graphics, visuals, art style, etc. etc. are mind-blowing. Also, absolutely ADORE Flemeth's new outfit/look. Uhm, where can I get me some?

- One thing I can't quite understand is why all of a sudden Lothering (or the Wilds or the outskirts of both, whatever that place is that we find outselves in) turned into the Capital Wasteland of Thedas? I understand the concept of darkspawn raveging the land, but methinks if it was supposed to be Lothering, we ought to see ruined building, etc. and if it's supposed to be the Wilds, even some burned out tree trunks would be better than this desert.  All we get is the Imperial Highway waaaaaay in the distance (and located MUCH higher up than I remember it from DA:O)

- I did notice the transitions between scenes, etc. were really jerky and the first time I wanted to get past the character customization screen, I got a CTD. So then I turned off V-Sync and the jerkiness was diminished (but not gone). Am hoping that can be addressed or further looked into for the full game.

- As someone has already mentioned, during the dialogue with Flemeth, at one point the audio tracks strumbled one over the other (i.e. not finishing one sentence while already starting a new one... and no, it wasn't me speeding the dialogue along, it was all part of her "performance" in one go).

- And yes please, if we could increase the font size or at the very least give the players the option of three or so different font sizes that everyone can adjust for themselves, that would be simply marvelous.

- *sigh* I do miss not being able to walk up to someone and start a conversation whenever I feel like it. We didn't get a whole lot of exposure to the dialogue system (apart from the dialogue option wheel) - but here I am reffering to the free form dialogue we know from DA:O. I am hoping that DA2 with contain a hybrid of the dialogue systems from DA:O and DA:A, instead of just one system, for as "evil" as the "laundry list" dialogue system from DA:O has been deemed, I really do enjoy the freedom of starting and carrying on conversations in the game when I choose and not necessarily ONLY when I find the right tree trunk or stone (though interactive environments has its advantages as well).

That's all that comes to mind at this moment. Might have more observations after testing out the other classes.

Just wanted to say how splendid the game is looking and that I am very excited to get my hands on the full product. So excited, in fact, that I have just pre-ordered by copy of DA2... when before I was on the fence and still debating. It's a different experience from DA:O, not a continuation of the journey (well, sort of) but a whole new adventure and it will take a little bit of getting used to all these differences, but overall, methinks it's going to be a wonderful experience. Amazing job guys, congratulations and can't wait for March 8th! :wizard:

PS. Oh, forgot to mention (think someone has already mentioned this before in this thread) the audio was all over the scale, with some normal and some really low. Could we get the audio volume looked into please? And no, I wasn't playing with the settings, had the music volume at 7, everything else at full, but while some characters were fine, others were kinda hard to hear.

I played on PS3, and only did a mage and a rogue so far but I am about to try warrior.

That said, I have a quick question first which may not be an issue as I simply may have missed it...but is there a way to see active effects (i.e. buffs, injuries) on the characters because I couldn't see any. I wanted to see, for example, what an injury icon looked like so I switched to Bethany after she revived from a fight but I didn't see any icon. Is it just me or is something glitchy w/ that on the PS3?

Otherwise, I really loved the demo. Combat was so fast, almost dizzying, but it was definitely impressive. I loved the abilities and the skill trees, and I look forward to seeing what is to come on the locked paths. Voices/faces were gorgeous...omg, especially Flemeth! I can't wait for more:)

Just finished the pc demo as a rogue character...... WOW very nicely done! THe movement was fluid, backstabs were amazing to see, an excellent experience. Can't wait until the game goes gold and ships out. The Demo was indeed very interesting; Flemeth's new look is fantastic and is very much more convincing as "The Witch of the Wilds". Now I have to try the other two clases. By the way, the lay out of the new skill trees are nicely done as well.

I absolutely loved every minute of it. Everything is better than I imagined. Combat is just wow. Thought the music in the credits sounded beautiful. Thank you so much for making every game you make. Only possible problem I had was that the dialogue audio sounds like it needs a bit more polish as I could hear it cut off after lines were said. A little distracting but nothing major.

Not impressed of the combat. I would prefer my hawke could be turned to script controlled so I would not have to "skill spam" (faceroll) on the keyboard.

This game appears clearly to be designed not for me, but since I have paid of sig edition I guess I have to get used to faceroll on the keyboard waves of trash mobs and stand stupid leet machoist comments "do u want me handle them all lol".

I hope the story more than makes the lack of grotesque chars and braindead combat, but I don't have high hopes in that regard if the story is all about saving some sucky chantry, which should be destroyed in the first place and all templars killed like any other darkspawn.

On the other hand, I take offers of DA2 Signature Edition.

Just finished 2 playthroughs on PC as a femaler rogue and warrior. Most likely will play with other styles to experiment a bit, but here are my impressions so far.

Positives:

- Love the art direction. The new visual style really does add more personality to the DA world. You guys really nailed it. Character designs are especially impressive, with Isabella being the only exception (I like boobies as much as the next guy, but those volleyballs are a joke).

- I like the faster, more action-oriented combat. It's a bit of an adjustment from DAO, but an easy one to make. By my second playthrough it felt completely natural.

- Love the greater variety of choices for abilities. Can't wait to experiment with them.

- Love the minimal UI. Very intuitive. Clean. Sexy.

Negatives:

- Animations look... awkward. I get that the faster animation is meant to compliment the new visual style, to make it look more exagerated, but it's a little TOO exagerated. Most of the time I couldn't see what, exactly, Hawke was doing. The "Hit a button, something awesome happens" philosophy only works when you can actually see the awesome something that is happening.

- I took my time and walked through some parts of the demo. I noticed my character would literally stick to the environment: Hawke's angle would tilt around (subtly, but still noticably) according to every little bump on the ground as she walked. It was kinda funny, but definitly not something that should be in the final product.

- Accessing character menus is pretty bugged: When trying to click on another character to level them up, the character menu would bump me back to the gameplay screen. It happened pretty sporadically, too, so there was no way to predict when it was going to happen. I only know that it was happening often.

Overall, I enjoyed it and I'm looking forward to the final release. I gotta admit my first playthrough was underwhelming, due to graphical and loading issues caused by DX11, but when I switched to DX9 for the second playthrough everything was peachy.

Bland environments. Bland UI. Bland cartoonish icons. If you want detail this game has none. Just seeing the inventory display makes me sad. Where are the little depictions of the loot? Just generic icons for everything now.

The check boxes are hard to see, the character portraits are too small and at the bottom where I don't want them and cannot see them quickly, the icons make no sense - health potions don't look like potions any more - the codex and journal are just blocks of type with no character, the map is gray on black (!) in the menu, the map onscreen is just a floating empty series of lines ...

The devs may have hated the cheese wheels but this world looks empty and too clean. There's no atmosphere in this world.

The combat is just ridiculous. It's like playing Dynasty Warriors and the teleporting backstab is just nonsensical. Are rogues magic now? They also have a charge attack like a warrior tank. Huh?

I poured over a 100 hours into DA and I preordered DA2 long ago expecting the game to be an improvement on an old school RPG with a detailed and realistic world. Again, playing to the consoles has short changed the PC users.

If Bioware don't want to make PC games specifically for PC gamers then really don't bother. I have a PS3 and 360 so I can just play console arcade action games on those. That way I can't be disappointed when the PC platform is shortchanged one more time.

Really not seeing it.
Other than the much cooler animations, the speed, and the fact that things happen when you press the button instead of 5 seconds afterwards (when you don't want it to happen anymore), tactically combat is the same.  In fact there is arguably more tactics since you can respond to battlefield changes immediately and set up combinations of powers more easily because there is less lag.  You can still pause and give orders, you still need to know when to use which power, and each power has situations for which it is most advantageous.  Not sure what you think is so different about it.

Truth be told I never had a problem with menus on my xbox, I push a button and tabs, I never had a problem with this it was nice, just like I never had a problem with me1 menus which they changed . . . . . :(

Also yes user above is correct it allows more tactics, now I can completely ignore my teamates have them all die and still win because since it is the way it is I can run hit run hit and never get hit, which seem to work with about everything.
I tried that once in DA:O
I ran, turned and was instantly slaughtered,
no they fix that in 2 <.< now I can speed tank everything.

There is a lot to like in the demo, but as a long time PC gamer, I definitely feel that Bioware swung the pendulum way too far to the console side of the equation. I've seen so many people say things like "Combat is great! It feels so frantic!". NO! Just no. Combat shouldn't feel frantic, it should feel tactical. It's just way too fast.

There are both pros and cons to the new conversation wheel dialogue option. I understand that it is probably necessary if you want a fully voiced main character, so I'm with that. But at least on PC we should be able to see what we're going to say and not a shortened pseudo-summary.

A lot of people have said the good things about the demo, and I agree with them. But for the love of all that is good in the world please shift at least a LITTLE back to the whole "spiritual successor to Baldur's Gate" and "old school RPG" side of the equation next time. Speed combat up a little from DAO if you must, but right now it's like combat is designed for a hyperactive ferret with a meth addiction.

Wonder if I can use a xbox 360 controller on the actual PC game? I realized you can't use it for the PC demo. I think the combat on pc is not as fluid as it is on xbox

Play through the Demo 6 times total. Both Genders of each class.
Gotta say, Bioware did a great job improving the combat system to be more fun and tactical. Don't mind all those haters, you can't pleases all the people in the world. No one can.
Bottom line, I LOVED IT !!

My thoughts on the demo.

Wish it was longer. But, it is a demo. Derp.

Love how Flemeth now kinda resembles Kate Muglrew

Love the new battle-system. Much more fast-paced and frenetic, but I can see the tactical system of DA:O is still retained, even with the new system and even on Normal difficulty.

This might be a tiny change, but I love it - I love how now when an enemy enters an attack animation, and you move out of the way, YOU DON'T GET HIT. In DA:O, you were SOL if you were in range when an enemy BEGAN an attack. Now moving out of the way actually MEANS something. Huzzah!

The new level-up system is very nice. Actually, I saw it coming from playing DA:L. The mid-maxing in this game is just as big a deal as it was in Origins.

I wish the Camera would zoom out a little further, but it was still easy to manipulate. However, I couldn't figure out how to place my peeps in parts of the battlefield where I wanted them without taking control of them. It's not like ME2 where you can press left or right on the d-pat and move them somewhere. Wish it was that simple.

The VA is for the most part, great so far. There were some characters I thought were a bit sub-par, but when compared to DA:O there are always some people that sound a bit hokey. Honestly, I think it's all the accents (I love accents, but when they're not done well it's cringe worthy) - but this is a period piece.

The characters were all very interesting. I heard that Hawke's family members will look like him. I like to make my characters black or minority characters, so I hope this is the case. Otherwise it'll be another case of the mother of the family having an affair, like it happened in DA:O with my human warrior. lol.

Overall, I'm super jazzed for this game. Glad I already pre-ordered it. Now I'm gonna play the demo until I either a) get bored or B) the full game comes out. Peace!

- The opening of Hawke's actual story sadly misses out on almost all its potential. We start with Varric telling an exaggerated version of the legend of... Hawke slaying a couple of the game's basic grunts in a featureless wasteland? I like the idea of an exaggerated opening, but I feel they could have done much more with this, like fighting some truly impressive demons in an outlandish environment, like a volcanic area or atop the highest tower of a massive citadel. As it stands, it doesn't feel very exaggerated or epic, just easy. And we later learn that the 'real' story is pretty much exactly the same, except with less Darkspawn, less abilities and a bigger party. So Varric wasn't even exaggerating that much.

- Similiarly, the escape from Lothering is as undramatic as it could possibly be. Here we are making our way through a preset mountain path with a family we don't care about, the threat of two or three Darkspawn constantly driving us forward... I wish they'd actually shown us some of the destruction of Lothering. Fighting your way out of the burning town, Darkspawn and dying people filling the streets, would have made for a much more dramatic opening and would actually have stirred some emotion.

Im amazed more people haven't spoken up on this. Totally agree and it's one of the biggest let downs for me, especially since they've hyped up the "storytelling" and "narrative" of the game so much.

There's absolutely NO emotional investment whatsoever.

Yea, I think that way would definitely have been more impactful.  I did not really good a good sense of urgency the way they did it or was emotionally invested in the characters when they died.  I can kind of see why they did it because if you think about it, it would have been odd if varric retold that part.  I think they made the wrong choice though since I think making the story more emotionally impactful in the beginning is more important than having the framed narrative make complete sense.

I'm not really commenting on the UI there (which I think is strictly superior, as an aside), but the use of "dumbed down" as a vague and entirely inappropriate pejorative.

Played on xbox~

Pros:

- Voiced dialogue is wonderful. Makes a huge difference to me to finally see my character and feel like I'm actually a part of the story. Not this mute god they drag around.

- Enjoying characters a lot. Particularly Aveline.

- Combat animations for mage are looking really spectacular.

- I may be the only one who enjoys mashing the 'a' button.

- Character details are very clear. I like the redesign on the ogre, and Isabella's jewelry looks very stylin.

Cons:

- UI is very clunky, and nigh unreadable on a non-HD tv. And I have a fair sized tv. Maybe my eyes are just bad... but, it does not translate well. In mass effect 1/2, the dialogue is much more easier to read.

- Not a lot of indication for what the dialogue symbols mean. This may be because I can't see it.

- Awkward body proportions. Not so much stylized as forced.

- Lighter hair colors appear unnatural, with the exception of Flemmeth's. [Which stood out nicely.] Background texturing is still not as crisp as I'd like.

- Bethany/Carver's death felt very random and rushed. If you're going to kill someone off, make it have weight. It didn't look so much like they sacrificed themselves, then they were Leeroying the boss.*

*Although it's possible some of this has been trimmed for the demo? Maybe?

- Background also gets HORRIBLY pixelated in some scenes. But I'm going to assume this is a bug and not really count it.

On the whole, however, I did enjoy it. I am very excited to see how the full game turns out.

This needs to be addressed as a day one patch for the full game.  On the PC version, you can not target through your character.  It was not like that in DA:O.  In WoW, there's an option to toggle between this, but I haven't noticed any other game that has this problem.  Every time I want to loot something, I have to change my camera angle just so I can loot bodies.  It's extremely fiddly and doesn't fit with the rest of the game design.

Other than that, I enjoyed everything immensely so, and the DW Rogue was one of the funnest RPG experiences I have had.  The mobility and damage is insane, and I love how they added "force jump" from KOTOR into DA2.  In DA:O all I would do is get behind the enemy and autoattack with 6 auras on (doing 600 DPS), and I had no stamina to do anything else.  I really love the new combat.

Well, I have played through the Demo twice now (PC). Once as a melee rogue and once as and archer. Both were fine. I don't find them any more entertaining than I did in DAO though, so I am unclear why the button=awesome campaign was such a big hit with Bioware (by the way, the game is for adults, and...well, the word...awesome reminds all of us of Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure...nothing good).

So, a couple of things. For me the graphics seem a bit retro somehow. I can't quite place it, but I have played games with similar graphics in the past. I haven't update my rig yet so I couldn't play at the high graphic levels but the game looked fine given the art style, which I am not overly fond of but can come to grips with if the story or gameplay are a good enough.

For those complaining about no auto-attack...what are you talking about? I right click on an enemy and go to town on it until it is dead, even if I don't use a special move. That's exactly the same as DAO.

I am not fond of how my weapons float 6 inches off my back...really, you can't fix this? Even modders in Oblivion were able to deal with that. Speaking of Oblivion...female Hawkes walk is pretty darn similar to Muir's Sexy Walk heh. Maybe someone used that...of course, that walk enabled bouncing boobs and butt in Oblivion, but for some reason Havok isn't supported here I suppose. I mean Isabela's earrings don't even move.

All in all, not bad though, better than I was expecting. I didn't run into any bugs once I reinstalled Direct X...speaking of, I really hope you fix that, you are just creating confusion for your demo group.

I am going to wait for a bit though and see how gamebanshee and others review the full game before I commit. There's a lot of RPG competition this year and with The Old Republic coming down the pipe I hesitate to jump into something that doesn't capture me the same way DAO did. I still remember rolling up a city elf and how immersive the game was right off the bat.

Targetting area of effect spells and whatnot was a little wonky, but maybe a more tactical camera angle will be in the full version.

Thanks for the Demo, it cleared up some of my uncertainty, but didn't tip me into the pool of buyers though.

As for the demo:

Combat: the button mashing was tedious, but if auto attack is on in the full game there will be no problems.

Companions: I liked being able to talk to my companions whenever. Sadly this is gone. :(

Technical: A lot of bugs, and odd occurances. I hope bioware is more on top of these then they were with Origins.

Finished playing the PC demo and really enjoyed it. I played a Two-Handed Warrior, Sword & Broad Warrior, Dual Wield Rogue, and Mage. I really enjoyed the Two-Hander and Mage, didn't care for the Rogue and quit right after the Ogre battle with the Sword & Broad character. I'll try out an Archer Rogue tomorrow.

The misleading dialogue wheel options are driving me nuts :o

Sometimes I get three options that are not appropriate with the conversation; Like when Bethany dies and the mother is crying over her corpse. I was looking for a compassionate, yet alarmed response, but all the response were pretty one sided; "It's okay" "She died bravely" "Lets get out of here". I mean, I wouldn't say that in her position...my sister just died! Why! Why!

Otherwise, I'm getting used to the combat and whatnot. There does seem to be a lack of options for abilities. Sometimes I want to go further in a combat tree, but all the silly level restrictions are preventing me. This means that all my characters will follow the same progression path (or almost) in terms of abilities.

Played the PC version. Various observations in no particular order:

Graphics are serviceable. Nothing to write home about, but they do what they are supposed to do.

Animations are pretty good. They are hilariously exaggerated to the point that I felt exhausted by just looking at the acrobatics Lady Hawke was performing, but they look alright.

Weapons are... big. I'll skip the obvious joke here about sizes, but what happened exactly? Someone typed in a wrong number and all weapon-like object got multiplied by 3? Unlike the animations which are hilariously exaggerated, weapons are just exaggerated.

I rather liked the combat. Initially looked really frantic and very chaotic, but I think that was just me getting used to the new speed and what not. On subsequent playthroughs it was fine. It's hard to say more without access to more skills/spells and without some hard battles.

Speaking of which, I really wish there was a way to up the difficulty level. I tried all three classes and the combat was pretty much a cakewalk. It'd be really nice to up the difficulty and see how the combat system works when you actually have to stop and think about what to do.

Voice acting was alright. I thought Lady Hawke was overdoing it a bit and there was couple of awkward moments in the family conversations, but nothing really bad.

Can't really say anything about the characters and the story as the demo was pretty short.
