Played PC Demo

The Cooldowns for many starting abilities seemed a bit too long for me, cause I wanted to keep using them more often.

I found myself dying on Normal difficulty quite a bit even before the ogre. This was my first time playing any Dragon Age game, and I am getting used to how it feels.

The click to move feature is annoying to me, and I would like to see an option to disable it. I looked and saw no option in the UI.

The story interested me, and the choices were okay. I think the cutscenes were well done and visually appealing as well.

I had a very hard time with the Ogre, so I never got passed that as of this posting. I tried using my mage as a support player who heals and buffs. I also tried using Beth (it think) to tank the ogre for awhile. At one time I came close to defeating him with less then 20% health. For me however this might be remedied by setting difficulty in your game to casual.

I didn't feel like I was doing enough damage with my weapon as a warrior or rogue when auto attacking. I used abilities when they were up, and tried dodging as well. But mostly I thought that I needed another ability early on that was perhaps more aoe based.

The mages fire blast aoe seemed too weak in my opinion.  In fact many aoe abilties seemed too weak or had no upgrade in the abilities list which upset me.  I wanted some characters to have good aoe options when surrounded to help me get through a zerg fest better.

The number of mobs racing to attack me and my group seemed a bit overwhelming at times and I had a hard time knowing how to control the situation. This was especially true during the Ogre encounter as I was surrounded by tons of mobs and the Ogre was hitting quite hard. If this Ogre had a set number of abilities, well I wasn't aware of what he was using so I could at least try to work out a counter to them.

Why is there no DX 10 support?

As a new player I had no idea what I was doing with the Tactics UI. I didn't know what each option did, and was very confused by the abilities priority list and how that works.  I just figured I would use support for my mage to heal me and the group, not sure it worked however.

The talents I could invest in with each class or character were perhaps too limiting. I wanted to have at least one option from each ability tree to choose from but many were locked until a later level.

Mobs were able to shoot arrows and their magical abilties through terrain or other objects at me.  I had a hard time getting away to recoup at times when this applied.

Would be nice if you let us equip items in the Demo, unless it would make little difference to our characters success.

Besides a tactical view, what exactly was watered down?

Oh yeah, and the lack of the tactical overhead (i.e. detachable) camera did end up being a real pain in the *** too.

This demo is awesome!  And by awesome, I mean it totally served it's purpose.  I see no need to spend money on this farce of a sequel.

You guys think fast paced frantic combat is awesome?  What's so frantic about selecting a target and waiting until it's dead (played on the PC so I didn't have to hit A repeatedly, which really sounds too much like whack-a-mole anyway).  The only time I felt like I needed to use any talents is when I wanted to make the incredibily dull combat end sooner.

Honestly, I had heard about some of the differences between DA1 and DA2 and I was very optimistic that it would just enhance an already great game.  So disappointed I can't even believe it.

Well other then the tini-tiny impossible to read text I loved the game. Don't believe the haters or the "the mages are over-powered" people, the faster faced combat is insanely awesome, this game rocks, and if Gamestop does a midnight launch for this beast I'll be first in line, but I'll still be griping about needing binoculars to read the screen... on a 32 inch tv... Fix that and you have a perfect game!

I was concerned about how the demo would be considering all the mixed reviews I've read today. My honest opinion is that I really like what the demo showed. There were some glitches along the way like clipping, trying to click on Carver to level him up but jumping back to main play screen, and a bit jerkish with the screen when characters run (unless that's intended). I really don't like the long cooldown on the first healing skill that can be selected under creation. I hope this doesn't mean all heals will take that long to replenish because it's too long for tough battles.

The variety of skills to specialize in are soooooo much better than DA:O options. Graphics are pleasing, some areas or character models were a bit bland but it was nice overall. Combat is much quicker, but I still felt the need to use tactics and pausing which I prefer at times. The cinematic feel of the game is nice, but it was kind of annoying to be in the middle of a fight and we couldn't finish it because it immediately jumps to a cut scene.

Overall, I was very pleased and feel good about keeping my pre-order. I look forward to March 8th! Oh one last thing, Cassandra's eyes are really creepy. =D

I really liked the Demo and I think I'll really like the game as well.

As far as an older game, I am one, in my 30s. I grew up with gaming all my life and played and still own most of the systems.

However as a gamer it makes me angry when people take a stance based on fond memory. The whole, "because its old it was better" opinion is a shallow one. Ive seen some good constructive negative feedback but far to much of what I read isn't.

Progression isn't always good, lots of things that have happened haven't always been for the best of reasons, but to make life "easier"; However stagnation is always bad.

EDIT *Just my 2 cents

Played on the Ps3.

I think I will warm up to pretty much all of the changes eventually, but it may take some time. The text gave me some trouble as it is teeny tiny, I frequently found myself leaning toward my tv trying to make out what it said. The combat is blazing fast, and I greatly enjoyed the rogues new found speed. Glad I pre-ordered

My impressions:

On a technical point of view, they are not good. But I have to think before I say anything to harsh, this is the Demo after-all, I am sure it is not an edited version of the retail, rather than pre release material.

Now to get to the game. The combat is now fun. I was one of the crowd when it came to Origin's combat, I didn't like it at all, that's why I only have 2 play-throughs believe it or not, areas with heavy combat like the Deep Roads spoilt it for me because of Origin's slow combat. The combat now is more responsive, and I actually feel that I am in a battle. So that's an A++ for you Bioware :D

The tactical view has it's pro's and cons. I say to my self "Why is having a overhead view more tactical when in a real battle, you have no such view, depending more on your fast responses and wits." Which is true in a way, the overhead view made things so much easier, but now that it's gone, tactics provide more of a challenge ;-)

The voice acting from Mother Hawke was weak during the death scenes, but I cannot slack any voice actor for that. It is hard to reach the emotional level of your child dying. Other than that Bioware has still remained the kings of Characters. I do not understand when people are saying 'force'? It's the demo, as far as I can see MANY things are cut out that we have yet to see, Varric's convo was cut out, and even alot of Isabella's stuff was cut out. Maybe that's why people feel forced, but as far as I can see it's only in the demo :-)

The death of your sibling is done greatly. Though people are complaining (rather obnoxiously in some cases) "do I have to like them?" it is never said that you do unless you pick certain dialogue options. So the whole character development thing between your family is done perfectly, a other cookie for you Bioware :-) But we must come to terms that it is not entirely our character, so Hawke does love them, but I see no problem in that Role Playing wise (were playing Dragon Age not D&D) ;-).

In terms of Role Playing I cannot make ANY sort of opinion, since alot of things were cut out from the Demo (there are scenes of Hawke in the ship that we did not see, scenes of interaction between Isabella and Hawke, Varric and Hawke, maybe another character like Fenris and Hawke, we have no idea. But it does lack (obviously) in character customization with the removal of the races, but only a little bit, I do not see it as a big down-grade in Role Playing. One example is Planescape, even without the option of races (and even character customization) it still manages to be one of (if not the) greatest RPGs of all time.

The graphical improvements can be seen, but every developer has their strong points, Bioware is story telling and character development, the key elements of a party based RPG. So they do look better overall but they are no concern to me. They could have made Dragon age II in the Baldur's gate II Infinity Engine and I would have still bought it :P

Overall Dragon Age II is looking to have a more original story than Origin's had, I think it's a great move from 'save the world.' The beginning totally had me thinking about certain things Flemeth said, like her debt with the Dalish.

I've found it hard to see any negatives other than the fact that old school Role Players will hate this like they hate most other Roleplaying games lol

How is it even possible to 'dumb down' dialouge in a Bioware game? It was all pretty much the same as DA:O other than the wheel. The emotions helped tremendously. But then people complain "It's telling me what to do". How more obnoxious and arsey can you get?

Console: PS3

Storyline: Definitely intriguing, as always.

Gameplay: F**KING BRILLIANT! I started off playing as a Rogue because, well... I like Rogues. It was just... amazing! Teleporting behind enemies, using poisons on the fly... hell, even ARCHERY felt fantastic. Melee combat with Archery was very nice (oddly enough), but the AoEs... oh my GOD, the AoEs. Gonna definitely try out Mage and Warrior, but Rogues... never change! Never ever change!

My thoughts from the X360 version:

Why is the font so small?  I have a 50" HDTV and had to squint to read the text.

The new dialogue options really, really suck.  One of the super awesome things about DA1 was the time and care that was obviously put into the backstory and the dialogue choices.  It feels like EA had a meeting and said, "no one cares about this, just make it a hack and slash."  That's too bad.

Why don't you move from enemy to enemy as you fight?  In the first one, after a mob went down, you naturally moved to the next, you didn't just stand there.  Not sure why this was removed.

What's with the quick heal?  You used to be able to stack potions as needed.  Seems like in the demo, they are on a timer now?

The combat is dreadful. The underlying mechanics are still there but the animation, sound and overall feel of the combat is absolutely atrocious. I don't want a Japanese action game, I want a western RPG.

Hell yes, this times 9000. The camera literaly hampers your tactics, i.e I can't aim a goddamn fireball to clear the grunts from the tanks while fight the boss because the mage is too far away and the camera dosen't go that far.

Also why the hell is the camera centered on the top of hawke's head and looking down?! You guys trying to make a Diablo II clone or something?

(This is for the PS3, since my 360 won't get it till next week and that is the system I will be playing the game on)

Constructive Criticism
- The text (and this is my biggest complaint) was so small and unreadable, I had to sit a few feet from the television just so I could read it
- Voice Acting in the beginning of the game (when you first meet Hawke) doesn't seem to flow, it seems choppy and pasted together, it does flow better later on
- The running animation is terrible
- I also had the Carver talks but has no voice problem when selecting him
- The Isabela mission had an enemy attacking me but they were holding no weapon, they were just swinging their arms around
- Cutscenes did not transition well
- Mother & Wesley were just standing in the battlefield during combat sequences. Seems odd, shouldn't they be standing else where?
- Why does Lothering look like the Darkspawn nuked it?
- I too am not a fan of the new Darkspawn design
- Do not like the new semi-transparent mini map, I liked it better in Origins
- Maybe this is a demo thing but I was disappointed that you don't start in pre-destruction Lothering. I would like to have met Leliana or maybe heard about Sten or my Grey Warden passing through, or even the little things my Warden did here and there in Lothering.
- Flemeth sounds evil instead of off her rocker like she did in Origins. Why is she wearing that stupid thing on her head?
- How does one pause the combat on the console versions? I had to do so by bringing up the menu wheel, if there is an actual way to pause so one can issue orders I missed it. (Consoles should have a button to pause the game like the PC version does)
- Why do the healing spells take so long to cooldown?
- The Text was unreadable (It was so bad I felt I had to mention it twice)

Positive Feedback
- Combat, even if for the most part was a button masher, is a lot faster, fluid and overall sweet
- Rogue class (dual wielding anyways, did not play an archer yet) got a much needed overhaul and was really fun to play
- I like the new staff attacks for the mages
 - Yay for leveling up in combat like in ME1, why you took this out in ME2 I don't know.
I know this list in short, but basically the new combat system intrigued me greatly and I had fun playing the demo and am looking very forward to the finished product.

Oh man, dat demo.

Fixed.

I just finished it for the PC and I absolutely LOVED it. I'll be honest with you: I have never said this before in my entire history of RPGs, but playing as a mage was fun. Not only that, but it was my favorite class to play as say whaaat pew pew fwooooosh explosions yay.

My only technical problem was that I got that silly message saying that my disc drive was open, but I fixed it. I'm a bit sad that I couldn't jack up the graphics level or fiddle around with the character creation/inventory screens, but alas. I'll just wait another two weeks or so for that.

I am so excited for the 8th. So. Excited.

PS FLEMETH IS SO COOL, I am her number one fan for life.

Overall the demo has re-kindled my excitement for DA2.  I'm off to facebook to earn some unlocks right after this and then to figure out my pre-order strategy.  As for my specific feedback.

Loading...

The Bad

-  I'm not sure how long I can listen to Liam Craig/Daniel Neeson's voice without switching to subtitles.  There may be something to be said for a silent protagonist.
-  There is no law that class balance is required for a single player RPG or that classes are even necessary.  A little cross pollenation would have been nice in the skill trees.
-  Am I wearing moon boots?  Why can I jump like 20 feet horizontally and 10 feet vertically?
-  Western Dark Fantasy = Wu Shu how?
-  Are you really going to DLC mine our wallets with content that should be in the shipping game like you did with ME2?
-  So far none of the characters are particularly memorable.  I know the demo was only about an hour long, but there's a reason nobody ever quotes characters from KOTOR II...similar vibe here.
-  What's the deal with Hawke's beard hair?
-  Hawke?  That's one notch below Cutter Slade.  Did you let a child's focus group pick that name?
-  Jesus, what exactly is loading?  Is the game processing SETI @ Home data in the background while I play?

Loading...

Luckily the good feedback way outweights the bad.  Every worry I had about the game is gone.  I'm a pureblooded PC gamer and I couldn't be happier with DA2.

Loading...

The Good

-  You made Dragon Age 2!!!  It feels like the Dragon Age universe.
-  The interface feels right.
-  The controls feel right.
-  The tactical combat is absolutely there, just as much as in DA:O.
-  I ran this on my Mac Mini (320M with 4GB) on medium at 1024x768 and it ran like a dream.

Thanks for the demo!

Well I played the PC demo and was firstly impressed by the sharp character textures during the first cut scenes. After this the combat started and I have to say that Hawke's animations are pretty amazing. Then I paused to check out what abilities were available and noticed the very limited zoom and also that I couldn't pan the camera to scan the battlefield, only rotate :(

A bit further in after some more combat and choppy conversation I levelled up which lead me deeper into the UI. My initial impression is that it's not in keeping with the games story / setting and it looks out of place. The attribute screen gives better info than DAO, but the special abilities screen is over worked. Just give me a grid layout any day.

Controlling Hawke felt very disconnected at times and lack of information on screen during battles meant I couldn't always tell if my special attacks had connected. Obvious when your enemy explodes into little pieces yes, but not so on tougher foes. While I'm on exploding, the blood and gore is pretty impressive :D Sadly the landscape initially was utterly dull and uninteresting to look at. I hope that linear boring stage never reapers in the full game. What turned the soil that colour anyway?

Update: Played through fully as mage and enjoyed it much more especially as it didn't crash this time. I don't like the conversation system, not the wheel as such, but it seems you have little option over what Hawke says. Might as well have 'Be Good', 'Neutral' or 'Mean' as options on the right. There's no thought or real involvement on the players part. You don't even have to read the right hand side as Hawke 'ad-libs' so much. I also can't figure out why after choosing investigate - then an option, why it reverts back to the main wheel after Hawke speaks. I want to keep talking!! Don't make me click investigate 6 times to get all the dialogue options!

The new play style will probably grow on me, but I feel it's really geared more towards the consoles with their controllers. The indoor levels probably aren't designed to crop the tops of caves and buildings for top down view, which I think is pretty sad. I did see that you can turn damage numbers back on in the options which will help with one of my gripes from the demo. Looking forward to seeing reviews of the full game before I decide whether to buy.
