I will never forgive consoles for what they did to Ghost Recon and Deux Ex and I loved the demo.  It's the same tactical combat that was in DA:O.  Other than a few headscratching animation choices and a slightly lower than bird's eye camera, it's fully intact.

Dragon Age 2 Demo Review

Length: A little short off hand. but it told enough of the story to satisfy my thirst for new content.

Presentation: Phenominal, Bioware as always does an outstanding job (Once you get a correct installer). even on a older system like my own it performed at 42 fps average. 2.2 ghz chip with a GTX 260 XFX black edetion vid card. 3 gigs of ram and 2 gigs of vid ram on tested on high settings only Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit. There were a few issues with the interface I'll explain later.

Story, The fact that they picked Flemmeth to start with again says something. I always wondered why she never did go after Duncan and Cailan Directly instead of the Hero of Denerim and Allistair But the new flemmeth well. Just when you compare her to the old one. It really threw me off there for a second.

Technical Glitches: I noticed a few, even in the short time I toyed with the demo. Ill admit it's a lot better then just the charachter creation demo they had for DA:O but still. First off when i got to downloading the PC version she was a very slow download averaged 200 kb/s took a couple of hours. that's to be expected everyones loading onto the server. Then, upon installing the Executable fails on a NSIS Integrity check (whatever that is). So I say hrm, this isn't boding well for Bioware. So I take a look round sure enough it's allready torrentable. And decent speed too. within the hour It was up and running.

Internally I noticed a pink screen when I zoomed out of my charachter screen too fast as well. Beyond that ....
I really didn't notice much else out of the ordinary.

Skill Rebalancing: All this aside it still is the same old Dragon Age we've come to love. The biggest difference I noticed. was that they took a page from the book of World of Warcraft and made every stat, responsible for it's static sister if you well. Beyond that, It's now bias on how you play the game cause you won't just come in button mashing after you get squashed by the ogre the first time around. That I can garuntee.

FYI the 360 version controls are a little awkward this time round. Recommend PC to most players.

Overall, I think it's the story that people come to see. And that is what bioware does best. Kudos to you guys
can't wait to see it on the 8th.

7.5 Score: on  a scale from total crap to WTF?!!!?!! this gets an awesome.

Console: PS3

First Impression: The strategic feel of the first game with an almost greater emphasis on strategy since the game is moving in almost real-time, with the fluid, almost frantic action of a good round one fighter.

I can't say why, but it honestly reminds me of the PS1 game Threads of Fate. I mean this in the most complimentory sense as I love rpgs, but most of them feel as if you can walk away in the middle of a fight and still win. The pacing on the combat keeps you involved.

Many people are complaining that the sibling death lacks a sincere emotional response because we don't know the character as of yet. Unfortunately I have to agree on this. I realize that there may be more to the opening in the actual game that removes this problem, but if not I would sincerely suggest watching the opening to Death Sentence before working on a death this early in the game.

As a final note, I wish more of the abilities had been selectable when leveling. I say this because my first impression of the warrior was that of boredom when compared to the other two classes. This could merely be a lack of options at this time, or that early on the combat seems to fall to basic button mashing. All told though, I greatly enjoy the feel of the game so far, and am sincerely glad I decided to pre-order back in december.

uhhhhh...just a question, will the music be separated (like in ME1) in the final game? I mean now if I turn the music off in the demo it turns it off during both gameplay and cutscenes. In ME1 for instance if I turned the music off it would still be on durng cutscenes...sadly this feature was removed in ME 2

so will DA2 be like DA2 in this regard? or was it just an issue with the Demo?

I'm sorry, but I didn't like the characters. They were either clones of previous BioWare characters or they were just incredibly irritating. That's my feedback, take it for what it is. :/

Hawke, on the other hand, was great.  I love his voice.

Once again, weapons are huge.  Too huge.

...You've only known the characters for like, five seconds. I can understand if you were hating on some other aspect of the demo, but we haven't even had a proper conversation with anybody yet. Don't write them off so quickly.

* I'm not a conservative, I like change. But the universe dark, visceral, made of gray . I feel like I'm not going to find it with this episode. I loved the atmosphere that emanated dao.

* I do not like cartoon animations, and much preferred the realistic models of faces from the first. If he had only made more efficient, it would have been great. But graphic issue aside, I do not care. Dao was ugly, it was the RPG that interested me.

* My biggest fear is that we end up with something of morality, good / bad as in Mass Effect. The biggest point of dao was the freedom to choose my options, not to be compelled to be in the camps of good or evil. Playing the demo, I felt it was like mass effect, and worse. Only three options, and sometimes none match what I wanted to serve.

By cons fortunately, Dragon age 2 did not make points of morality, this horrible system, which requires optimization and that is anti-rp. A delist for M3, but it will never happen.

* Finally, I would say that the demo is really not the best showcase to get an idea of the potential of rpg

PC version here....

I'll say right now that this review will be negative overall. With that said, let's begin.

User Interface

Throughout the demo, I found myself thinking that the UI looked like a temporary thing and a better-looking one was going to be put in place at release. It wasn't until I learned at the end of the demo that this would be released in a couple weeks that I went back on that. Honestly, this looks like a couple of guys scrapped this together in a week or two. Icons were reused and the few that were new, looked half-assed and thrown together in a rush. There were no unique or new skins for any of it. Just colored text in a semi-transparent field.

Spells and Abilities

Overall, I found the new spells to be old and boring. It seems like almost no new spells were added and the ones that were changed seemed like rehashes of the old ones (i.e. Firestorm vs. Inferno). The new progression of spells also seemed limited as to what spells you can choose. By that, I mean I found the old multiple single- lined spell progression (made up this term, lol) much more versatile then this single tree system that limits access to certain spells early on. Also, it seemed that the variety of spells shrunk dramaticly.

Dialogue

This has been one complaint that I not only had with ME, but now with DA2. In the current wheel system, there are four types of dialogue: "The Good Guy", "The Bad Guy", "The Sarcastic Guy", and the "Investigation". The only exception of this would be the decision making options which still tend to follow the good vs. bad scenario. In my opinion, this style of dialogue limits the player as to how they want their story to progress. TIn this situation, I feel like I'm being yanked around with whatever BioWare decides to pull me through. Now, I suppose the same could be said about Origins and how it somewhat did the same thing and admittedly, this could even have been improved then. But in this system, it is far more apparent which option was which. This is because it always follows the same pattern. Good on top, bad on bottom, sarcastic in middle. This is far too pridictable and I fiund myself always picking the same options based on which type of person I aspire to be rather than which option I find best personally.

Voice Acting and "Shepard" Style of Character

Most of the problem I had with the voice acting refers back to what I mentioned about a los of personalization. This was one of the things I loved about Origins. Your own race, and no voice overlay to dictate what my character is going to be like. The voice acting and Hawke name requirement was another loss to me in terms of creating my own story. Once again, it seems like BioWare is pulling me around in their story instead of leting me venture through my own.

Overall Appearance

Here is the only true silver lining I found within the demo, but only marginally. I had noticed immediately the improvement on the overall graphics of the game and character movement. This was one of the few cons I found with Origins. The textures have been greatly improved and the npc's dont move roboticly anymore. However, I felt that some of the model and skin changes were a step backwars from this game predecessor. For example, the ogres and hurlocks looked strange with a more fleshy color of kin and, as a result, much less menacing, in my opinion. Another fault I found was that the various spells looked mush less visually appealing than in Origins.

The Story Thus Far

From what little I have gathered from the story right now, I predict that the story will be somewhat lacking in this game. With my character already being declared a "champion" (even though it is in the future), it loses that sort of underdog feeling. With the Wardens in Ferelden being completely wiped out at Ostagar and being labeled a criminal by a traitorous General, the story was much more compelling. Taking refuge from an invasion of darkspawn seems like a rather lame excuse for a story. However, I will not make a full judgement based on what little I have yet seen.

Combat Mechanics

This is where I met the most friction in the demo. I get that the changes were made to make the combat more fluid and action-oriented. But I think that this is precicely what is wrong with it! By centering the combat around action, they lost a key element that made the previous game great: Strategy! The loss of the tactical view was devistating for me. It would always be there to sid me when it came to planning moves over a lage area and getting an overall idea of the scenario I was in so that I could strategize for that fight. Now I find myself simply charging in hoping that nothing unexpected runs around a corner leaving me ill-prepared. You would think that the loss of this would make the game more challenging, right? Wrong. The encounters were so basically layed out and my party and enemies ran around so quickly, that all I used the pause button for was to cut down time on casting spells and targeting enemies. The combat in this game seems to be deteriorating from intense strategy, to simple reaction and response time.

Overall, the theme of my opinion of this game would be, "If it isn't broken, why fix it?". I felt that Origins was a very great game but where improvements were made, there were also detrimental changes. If I would rate this game, I would give it a 5 out of 10. This game may seem decent on its own, but compared to its predecessor, it pales in comparison. And, as of right now, I will not be buying this game when it is released.

If you just skimmed over this entire review because you were intimidated by the long post, I strongly encourage you read through it carefully. (Especially if you are a BioWare employee!) But, right now, I'm feeling like I just wrote a term paper for school and appreciate those who took the time to read through it carefully.

/end rant

I played on the 360.

I've never had so much fun playing as a Rogue as I did in the demo. The attacks were fast and I loved being able to run out of the way of projectiles that the Ogre would throw. (Because no matter where you ran in DA:O, it would always hit you, even if you went behind the damn thing.

I'm not usually a mage player, but the shift between spells and attacking was fast and smooth, which I appreciated. I didn't have to wait around for a big spell to charge up every time, and then wait another large chunk of battle time for it to be usable again.

What I had problems with was the font size of the game text. Now, I don't have a tiny TV screen or anything, but I couldn't read anything that was written in the game without having to get up, squint, and stand right in front of my screen.

Actually I forgot to mention the fact that darkspawn are apparently made of jell-o now.  Did anyone else find the lightsaber-like characteristics of sharpened steel incongruous with even fantasy physics?

Other people have said a lot about gameplay and whatnot already, so I'll just make one point.

I miss the old font used in DA:O. I really don't like the Times New Roman-looking font used in DA2. Yeah, it seems like such a minor neurotic point, but font does a lot for atmosphere/flavor.

Other than that, I thought the demo was great and I have to say I'm more excited for DA2 than I was before.

If it makes you feel better, I got it on my xbox and I am displeased. Although when I tend to think of it console users tend to be the type to like that kind of stuff, look at it market, all shooters fast pace and such, no great games like
Xcom or balders gate, not just cod halo and BF BC
Last thing that irks me is level design it seemed so, linear, I liked in origins how it was at least someways open and left small sections to explore, it was fun.

Thanks for locking my thread and forcing me to post my opinions in an 80 page thread that no one will ever read simply because I'm not singing your praises.

LOL, because your (rather sparse and unconstructive) opinion is so much more important than everyone elses, or what?

What the hell are you doing playing CrPGs at all then? Play tabletop as that's the only place you can venture through 'your own story.'

PS3

Game crashed twice, so not too happy about that.

Pros:

-Combat was more 'alive'

-Webbed talent tree's was a good idea

-Great voice casting

Cons:

-I got bored of button mashing, where's my promised strategy?

-Fights were too easy, just masses of enemies with loads of health, big whoop...

-Didn't feel like I was a part of the game, just along for the ride. The enemies knew where I would be, but never bothered to set up a trap or something like in DA:O (Yes, I know wolves aren't meant to set traps, but the signs answered that conundrum!)

-Graphics are good in cut scenes, but too jolty in combat. My 2h warrior darts around like a Dynasty warrior's nutjob

-Environments looked plastered on, no real depth or aesthetic appeal. Hell I enjoyed looking around the Kocari wilds a bit in DA:O

All in all, I think I'll hold onto DA:O and DA:A a little while longer :/

Just did a FHawke rogue playthrough and had a blast. I found rogue combat to be much improved compared to origins. Combat in general seemed to be much more fluid.

It's already been mentioned, but Flemeth was great.

Siblings(Carver for me) death scene was a little underwhelming, Wesley's was much better imo.

Music was good and I noticed that some origins music was reused(kokari wilds theme?)

It was already mentioned in other posts, but there was no option to set up drink potions in tactics.

Is that just a demo thing?

To summarize: Had a blast, can't wait until March 8.

Time for my feedback, since I've finished the demo with a mage Hawke.

Version: PC, with graphics detail on High. Played with a male hawke mage.

1) I was worried with the isometric view elimination, but I can still play with my mage in DAO, but the camera is still TOO CLOSE. Please, can we have a more futher away camera just like in origins, at least in PC?. It's a pain with the AOE spells like fireball. Maybe it goes well with melee characters but it's really awful with mages, or (I guess) archers.

2) I like the attack moves, they are spectacular, even with my mage.

3) The spell tree seems a bit limited compared to origins.

4) The graphics and interface are just plain HORRIBLE!! seriously, this seem a step back from the first DAO.

5) I have a problem with Hawke's voice, if I choose a "neutral" choice followed with a "bad" response it seems that my hawke have a multiple personality disorder...is not like..for example, male shepard, wich neautral options get along well with the paragon OR renegade choices.

Fortunately my game didn't crashed, so I was able to play the entire demo on my first try, (well, after battling with the dreaded "d3dx9_43.dll is missing" error ), so no complaints on that aspect.

So, that's it. I don't know if I buy it at launch, probably not, I'll get it later in the year if I find it at lower price.

fable! dragon age omfg! I will play it. Its not has fun has the old one. I loved it when you felt the sword hit your opponent and see their reaction in there face. Its way to fast now. I do like the story line and the mage can use there staff now to fight. I am sad throw it feels so much like fable and the looks of some charters. Flemth and Isabella look great now just that everyone else look like fable charters , come on people. I want more English humor! What the hell happened gezzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz. Now between my mother and I its call Fable 4 in the age of the dragon! We both now want to tell bioware DONT TOUCH ! Masseffect PLEASE!

First time I played on normal wasn't sure I would be able to do it, but I did! The fighting is a little fast, but I think I can live with that. Today is my birthday so what a great birthday present to myself!!!!!!!

PC user.

Loved DAO, didn't want it changed...but the demo was really fun. It feels unnecessarily different, but I did like it. I'm just not sure that I'm going to care for a narrative style. Either way, I went ahead and preordered when I had very little intention of even buying the game after reading about all of the changes previously.

I would give it an 8/10, based on the demo.

I feel a bit better about the game after watching this:

http://www.gamespot....itialclk;series

Seems like the whole game is much better, with regions with more details. I think that the choice region for the demo was wrong because it only showed environments that lacked details and the demo was too linear.

I must say, the DA2 demo has me truly disappointed. The combat is very Diablo, and it's falling short as an ARPG. It feels almost like one of those mindless console action button mashers. As a mage, it feels awful. The Skill Tree is interesting, but it feels far too watered down compared to Origins, from top to bottom.

Without saying, voice acting, models and the world are fantastic, but Bioware has almost all but abandoned what made the first game so great. This demo didn't feel like a PC game like Origins felt like. As a PC and Console gamer, PC is still king for me personally, especially for RPG's, and I was really hoping to get a comparable game in DA2.

Obviously, Bioware has made this game with Consoles in mind, taking out the strategy and deeper RPG elements of the first on in place of an action game.

I think most old school Bioware fans will be disappointed with this one, especially those of us who loved and still love Neverwinter Nights. I love Bioware, probably my fav dev along with Valve, but this has me seriously bummed out. I just went back and played through Dragon Age and The Awakening, and this feels like a shell of the first one....

Anyone else feeling underwhelmed?

I just played through all three demos, and I got to hand it to Bioware. They really strove to make the game identical through all three platforms (for the demo at least). Exact same textures (PC demo doesn't support modes higher than medium without crashes and framerate issues), exact same cutscene pauses, exact same cutscene slowdowns (though on PC it isn't exactly noticeable) and exact same FMV.
